DAIWA SALTIGA Expedition Review. Worth it in 2021?

This could be the best saltwater spinning reel ever made. In today's video review, I cover whether or not the 2014 Daiwa Saltiga Expedition 5500H is still worth using in 2020. In this comprehensive review (which also applies to the Saltiga Expedition 8000H, The 2015 Saltiga, and the Saltiga Dogfight) I break down how the reel is performs, component by component, the pros, the cons, and how the reel fishes overall. I also touch on my opinion of the appearance, and I finish the video with my overall assessment and recommendations.
This Daiwa Saltiga is truly an awesome reel that falls into the realm of "super spinners." Competing with the likes of the Shimano Stella, Penn Torque, Okuma Makaira, and depending on who you ask: Van Staals and Zeebaas. This particular reel is a JDM Saltiga, meaning it is made in Japan, however, most of the components are exactly the same as on other Daiwa Saltiga models. Be on the lookout for a video where I compare the Daiwa Saltiga, Shimano Stella, and Van Staal VSX.
If you like this Daiwa Saltiga review video, be sure to leave a comment on what spinning reel you want me to review next! I'm definitely looking forward to getting my hands on the 2019 Shimano Stella and 2020 Daiwa Saltiga.

I have the Penn Torque 9 and the Diawa Dogfight 8000H and all tho they have their specific duties in my fishing arsenal, the Diawa is so much smoother and an all around better real. Stellas I never liked but it’s only my opinion. Awesome vid as always. Hope to see you out at the pier as soon as it’s safe to travel again. Be safe.. God bless.

Always great review. I've a 2012 Daiwa Catalina 3500 and I love it ... as you said mechanics and very high quality gears are on top. Handle got the same usual design, that I love too. Mine was serviced by French guru using Korean ferrofluid, but I may agree next time probably I should send it to Daiwa for service. For offshore I choose to buy a Saragosa SWA 8K that as from your review, seems one of the better sealed midrange SW reel (Alan Hows seems to confirm that), and probably pretty easy to overhaul. Thanks again for you video really interesting.

Saltiga reel do not need to be service as often as other class reels (internally) since they are sealed; if you considered one. Unless if you fish everyday in harsh condition day in day out for a whole year or you submerge the reel in salt water for a month. The magseal pretty much built to last very long along with the materials they are built with. Saltigas has been field tested to withstand saltwater. However, they need special lubricate specify for their drag system, which you could order online. For internal maintenence wise, I am certain there are Daiwa service centre that can provide that service in your country.

The Expedition in 5500 and 8K is the sexiest reel ever made for sure. Unfortunately the paint durability is terrible (chips on the foot after 2 trips), and parts are eventually going to become limited. I heard on the 2020 Saltiga the paint process has been improved however.

Since I'm primarily a land based fisherman I won't even consider a Shimano. After you've been spooled a couple times you want as much line capacity as possible. Shimano just does not deliver in that category. Plus I like the drag much better on the daiwas. If you do need to adjust your drag during the fight the daiwa doesn't require as many turns on the drag knob.

@zaidonlounh2113
@zaidonlounh2113 3 года назад
Taevon mahi'ai Totally agreed. I think the Stella is more of a Boat reel rather then A rock/shore reel. I use mine on the jetties here in Texas and they do work for the fish here. But everywhere else is a different experience.
@zaidonlounh2113
@zaidonlounh2113 3 года назад
Taevon mahi'ai I use my Stella 8k for big game fish, so jacks, Kings, Sharks, bullreds. Having that size allows me to put a bigger line and also the drag allows me to horse the fish in before it getting into the rocks. I haven’t been to Port A in awhile, normally go there for Poons and Kings. I live on the Uppercoast.

C'mon Ryan, 40-50lb is an absolutely realistic drag pressure IF you use the right technique and on a boat it really depends on the rod and where the fish is going. I've done similar tests with my buddies and I pulled them over the ground, even guys who had 50lb on me (the bigger guys on conventional) but even on big spinners I could literally move people and tested drag, I can hold onto over 100lb if the line angle is mild, effectively gain at 70lb, with a harness even more is possible. Now on a Spinner stand up with the fish pulling down 50lb is about the max, unless you hold the rod over the rail and point it straight down, then you can lock up and stop a fish if you have to, especially with fish like GT this can be a true life safer, once the fish is stopped you can fight it the normal way. Great job though for the video and I know you Americans fish a bit different and (with a couple exceptions) don't use the amount of drag people in Australia, the Mediterranean and most of the Indian ocean use which probably has a lot to do with the coast, here you can have a thousand feet or more of depth in casting distance and sometimes the shore directly drops off into the deep blue so especially from land where rocks are in the way and you can hook absolute monsters that you need to stop and you have the stability of solid ground and everywhere you need abrasion resistance and therefore heavier line you need to be able to put the brakes on big time to not get spooled or loose the fish to structure.
