My take on Jeff Gordon through the years: 1998 - Man, this guy wins all the time! I hate him! 2008 - Well, he's Dale Jr's teammate now so I can't hate him anymore. 2018 - Man, I miss Jeff Gordon on the track.
Jason Heavner My take on this is this- Back in the day we diehard Earnhardt fans DID NOT pull for Gordon whatsoever, Zero. It was us against them. That’s it. Hendricks Motorsports was your arch enemy!! And after Dales Death we kind of took up with Jr somewhat. Not with the same intensity but somewhat. And to be honest I never could really accept his decision to drive for Hendrick, never. I put up with it yes, but just didn’t feel right wearing hats , shirts with Hendrick on it.
I used to hate Gordon with a passion. Hearing how Dale took him under his wing and taught him the business end of the sport has changed how I’ve viewed him over the years. I miss 1990s NASCAR.
I wish they would make it OLD school again Make them "STOCKcars" not heavy Formula one cars. In my opinion the word STOCK CAR needs to be remembered. Nascar in my opinion has went backwards since the car of tomorrow, in race quality. Due to costs a guy like Dale Sr. today may not exist or ever get a chance to race at all, a guy who busted his tail and through hard work and persistence became a legend from the efforts of his own 2 hands working and his driving skills. If the cars had more in common to a car i can buy and drive I think nascar would get back what it is losing. But at the same time i understand, how can you go backwards, tough situation. When a championship winning team has to close shop there is a problem. Nascar should not be F1 in costs.
@@scottthatcher9086 well said and speaking of Dale and old Nascar, watch thr pass Dale makes on Bodine ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qGgAMRS_1ug.html
@@MormonMustang_ Same. I haven't watched NASCAR in years now and I was a guy who went to five or six cup races a year for 20+ years and tons of modified and truck races, too. I miss it dearly but NASCAR is dead.
Dude had 47 wins in 5 years. Never been a more dominant stretch in modern era of NASCAR. People forget how crazy good they were. Even Jimmie Johnson's best 5 year stretch is 34 wins.
If they went back to real points championships instead of the bullshit they have now, that ruined the sport, JJ, at best, would have won 2 championships.
Add Ken Schrader (who is a hysterical SOB if you've never heard him tell stories) and a couple cases of beer to this setup and you'd have a month's worth.
I could watch/listen to this all day long, I love hearing these stories because they are unedited and never before been told for the public to hear which makes them that much more interesting.
Every story you hear about Earnhardt sr just grows his legend more. I really wish younger people could have experienced the intimidator and understand how damn legendary he was. NASCAR will never get back to where it was with him
Not a day goes by where i don’t think about him at least once a day. Especially if I’m watching something nascar related. It was still cool in 2000 seeing jr and sr racing together
Listening to Dale Jr's podcast has really given a different perspective of Sr. Hearing about him coming up and how he became "The Intimidator" has given me even more respect for the man and I was never a NASCAR fan but I always liked Sr. Understanding that he drove how he drove because it meant he wasn't gonna eat if he didn't, you start to understand. He did whatever he could to win in those days. And that became Dale Sr. The Intimidator.
As someone who left the sport when Jeff Gordon did, I love that these two guys are friends. There aren't many genuine charasmatic people like Dale Jr and Jeff Gordon. It's why Nascar is dead, playoffs cost Jeff at least 2 titles, he should be a 6 time champ. The sport needs more personalities where drivers are beholden to sponsors and seem like robots.
Jeff used to be considered the polished media guy. Now he's a personality. I guess when you have Jimmie the media robot Johnson out there it changes things.
@JTeam45 the more NASCAR goes after that buck, the fewer people are in the seats. I got a load of Stock Car Racing magazines from the late 90's into 2000 (one profiling Joey Logano as a kart driver) where the salt of the earth people that New York and Los Angeles look down upon were smart enough to predict every step of this collapse.
AMERICAN KID, Dale Sr could ruin another driver's race without even touching their race car. He was the first NASCAR race car driver to use airflow as an advantage.
There was a post race interview with Dale where he said, they call me the Intimidator? Have you seen all of the red paint on the back bumper of my black car? He was smiling, he seemed proud that Jeff was learning to race like he did.
The flip side is that June Bug had a tough time growing up with dad always at the shop and sending workers over to do things with junior that Dale said he would do himself.
DJ GREEDER, BULLCRAP. I worked at Daytona, Darlington, and Talladega NASCAR tracks 1996-2006 as part of the security/safety teams. Of camera, behind the scenes, "Wonder Boy" wasn't a humble nice guy at all. At least twice, at Daytona Speedway garage area, he told a few fans to F-off. Another time, a woman bought a #24 hat and asked him to autograph it. He said "GFY" to her. She got really angry and threw the hat at him. He called her a POS and started to approach her. Our team stopped him from doing that. I told him to look in a mirror for the real POS. I wish that he'd gotten physically aggressive with me.
Jr really respects Jeff. I’ve heard him talk in other interviews about his love for Hendrick MS and Rick too. It’s taken me a long time but man Jr is a good guy, good husband and good father. He never minded walking in his dad’s shadow. He had a pretty crappy childhood. Especially when you think Dale Earnhardt was his dad so it must have been great.
I had the fortunate opportunity to be around Dale long, long before he became a superstar. My dad was in the same hunting club with Dale and Neil Bonnet. Both Mr. Earnhardt and Mr. Bonnet were regular guys who loved to hunt.
68blarge Back when Moses wore short pants?? 😆 😂 😝 JKJK I just recently watched a video on here where Ken Squir interviewed Dale while he was on a bass boat fishing, I think it was from 1980 or 81 but it made me think of how cool it woulda been to just go fishing with Dale & hear his philosophy on things. Not just racing but life. I would always cherish the fact that you was in that circle of people. Not many peeps can say that.
I was stationed at Camp Zama, Japan and was at the race at Motegi, Japan and was able to sit in the pits right by Jr & Sr's pits. That was an amazing experience and I got to shake hands with both legends.
I 100% Believe the Sport Would be in a Different Place if Dale was Still Alive ......He Would Have Rejected a lot of the Nonsense Over the Past 10-12 Years ......
He could have rejected it all he wanted too. He'd just have to stop racing. You folks that think he held some God position over NASCAR are delusional. The only thing that has power over them is the almighty dollar. Sr. wasn't gonna change that. He'd have been retired anyway. I don't like comparing drivers across generations. Things change. Tracks, cars, technology, money. Heck, even within their own careers success becomes fleeting at some point. It all changes. There's no certainty any of the greats would have been so in other times. When Petty won 200 races, they raced a lot more and against lesser competition. He wouldn't get anywhere near 200 wins now. Earnhardt probably wouldn't have 7. Gordon may not have won anything in the 60s & 70s. We already know Gordon would have had more championships if the point system didn't change. JJ would have less. Beyond speculation and belief in our driver, we just don't know. One thing I do like when ranking a driver is success with different crew chiefs. Earnhardt and Gordon both had it. JJ hasn't.
Anyone remember an impromptu press conference with dale, sr, and dave marcus? They pretty much blamed the recent deaths, at the time, on the full face helmets. Something about the extra weight of the helmet. Drivers were getting their necks broken. The HANS device was optional at the time.
Dale Earnhardt Sr loved the sport so much, he pushed others after he won the Daytona 500. Gotta love when the competitor loves the sport more than the award.
That was absolutely the greatest time in Nascar. It was just so exciting and interesting to be a fan. I was a big Gordon fan and also Sterling Marlin fan because he is from Nashville. Those super speedway races were so freaking good. There was so many great drivers and story lines to follow. I don't think Nascar can ever get that magic back but I'm thankful I was around to see it happen.
I still want to know what the hell Runt Pittman's secret was behind those 1990s restrict or plate engines was. Those things sounded evil and ran like hell.
I still miss the Richard Petty vs David Pearson. Two completely different looking cars, yet as fast as each other. That's why they are 1 & 2 in the win dept.
Wow it would have been such a treat, to hear Dale Sr call races from the booth (post retirement). Hearing his views and secrets on each track. I still say his passing was the biggest blow to NASCAR.. or at least the first major blow. Poor Jimmy, his 7 championships, credit is due he earned them... but he'll never wear it like Earnhardt did. Really though, we shouldn't put people on such pedestals.. If Earnhardt could tell us anything now, he'd say find Jesus!
Eric Gambrel because for 26 races another driver dominated (usually Jeff Gordon) and then the chase starts and resets everyone’s points and the guy who should of been down by 300 points has a better final 10 races and steals the championship. It gave Jimmie a fresh start when he would have been screwed in the better years of nascar. Nowadays it’s even worse. If you win one out of the first 26 races, you’re in the chase. So many irrelevant races. The chase ruined a lot imo
I guess i am getting old, I rather watch my two favorite drivers talk chit about the past than watch current races. I think I am losing interest in NASCAR since I do not play virtual racing anymore. Back in the day when you were still a teen, and I was in my early 20s, I remember racing with you on the Sierra / Papyrus NASCAR RACING simulator/game. Back when it was still BETA test on the TEN Network if I remember correctly. I was mainly a "Professional Quake Player" But when the TEN Hawaii Beta test came out that was my game for the next 10 years. We were in the same race club for some reason you Mr. Dale Jr. seem to give a chit about me or was in a good mood that day, and gave me 3 race setups, one for TEXAS, one for Bristol, and one for restrictor Plates. They made me go from a driver to a winner. I used that Texas setup until they removed that "bump" out of 4. The question I always wonder is it courage or Insanity that allows you race like that in real life? In the time I raced "on simulators" i must of died 30 times or more times a year just on the crazy wrecks I always ended up in trying to hard to compete. Even greater is the courage to get back in the car after a wreck. Dale and Jeff I miss you two racing but I am glad you got the help needed on your concussion.
@@ThisIsWilliamPhelps, I didn't have a fast connection back then, but even if I had I'd never have raced online, because I was too terrible at it, but man, I used to love their message board and the stories the guys would tell on it. Spent hours either practising by myself, racing against the AI or reading the board.
Can you imagine the relationship Dale Sr & Jeff G. would've had today as friends. My goodness the stories they could be telling us. Laughing & drinking a beer together, and loving looking back on it all. They're show would be number one, the highest anywhere on ratings. Featuring EVERY NASCAR driving star still alive that would grace the show with their appearances.. Like Hee Haw of Nascar. Or something like Jr could be heading to. Oh man I could imagine it.
I love hearing stories about Dale sr. Especially from drivers he raced with and guys who worked with him. It sucks that hes gone and I really wish that he was here to tell some stories about other drivers. Im sure that his stories would be just as good if not better than the ones we get to hear.
I know this is probably beating a dead horse but they took all the prestige out of the sport with the way the championship is decided. It used to mean so much more before the chase. The change alienated a lot of fans who appreciate the consistent grind of the old format. To me its a true motor sports season, not the randomness of a 10 race shootout. A top 5 during the season used to mean something. Now, not as much. It cheapens the whole experience at least for me. I still enjoy races but I grew up a Dale Sr. fan and I'm lucky to have got to see 90's Nascar. Golden age for the sport.
They're trying to be like the NFL, NBA with the "stages" being a quarter/period and the "Chase" and playoff bullshit. "Overtime" is absolute horseshit, the entire race means nothing if someone can run first all day and then lose on a green-white-checkered when it takes 2 laps to get up to speed. Absolute gimmick and not real racing.
@@lockandreload I'm with you. The "overtime" thing, I can admit it puts Nascar in a tough spot. You're dead on when it takes a couple laps to even really get up to speed, how can you let the race be decided by what's just essentially a short drag race? Same time you don't want the race to end under caution like it used to before overtime, that's even worse.
Last time I saw Earnhardt senior race at Atlanta . He lapped the field . Never seen anything like it at any race I’ve ever been to , to this day. That was once in a lifetime thing was to actually see him race. That guy was larger than life amazingly talented person.🤘😎🤘
I remember a story I heard years ago, in Daytona, for the 500, owners and drivers were bringing their boats in to dock, and I think it was Felix Sabatis said he was on his boat and all of a sudden a big shadow was cast over his boat. He went to the window, looked out and Dale's yacht had just pulled in next to him.
I saw a beautiful sight just about a month ago. I was rolling down I-89 towards White River Junction in my Honda Element. It was a little sloppy that day, wintry mix, so I was cruising along at the speed limit. I could see this large truck growing larger and larger in my rearview mirror. He was on the move! When he rolled by me, it was so awesome. The truck may have been a rig that once hauled Dale's cars from track to track. It was so awesome! Then we hit the junction of 89 and 91. He kept on rolling towards Concord, NH, and I headed South.
I was thinking Jr. had some thoughts he never got to finish. I guess I'm not the only one that noticed he got interrupted a couple of times. Good stories though. I just discovered this channel and subscribed. Looking forward to more of these
When I was a kid, I hated Jeff Gordon. For no other reason than he won a lot. Now I could listen to this guy tell racing stories all day long. Funny what time does.
The only other time I have seen anything as amazing as watching dale race was watching Dale Jr win Daytona not long after he passed. Dale Jr has brought honor to his dads memory and In my mine his looking down on him a very proud father. Been Dale Jr fan since he started Winston Cup.Dale Jr is a master at Daytona and Talledega like his dad was. Dale Sr,Dale Jr,Bill Elliot ,Rusty Wallace,Richard Petty,Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart,Mark Martin etc . That era of racing was just so amazing and I look forward to seeing these new guys get to that level of intensity and rivalry. And their are some great new talented guys . 🤘😎🤘
The rivalry between 'The Intimidator #3 Old School Badass' and Jeff Gordon - Rainbow Warrior, Ray Evernham, is the reason I am a NASCAR fan today. I lived in TN at the time and remember rejoicing and cheering when Gordon beat #3 - mainly just to piss off the natives.
I'm English and in 2001 NASCAR hadn't reached a huge number of us over here still! I had become aware of the cult following of DE3 in the States and remember willing him over the winning line in 98' being a massive sport's fan I'm touched deeply by all such stories! So I'm from that moment a big fan of DE! never give up, rewards will come if you work hard and keep faith! Etc etc his story is a perfect example to follow and learn from! I lost my dad also age 49! A massive heart attack caused due to a congenital heart disease passed from female's to males down the family line! It had taken my nan nan (my dad's mum) in 1970! Knowledge of disease etc had not yet advanced to understand the particular heart defect or the genetics or whatever that will show congenital passing on of health issues! Outwardly my dad was quite the specimen! Lol didn't he know it too! I joined the military at 17 and still was some 7 years later! I was serving with fellow NATO forces in Bosnia, I was commanding a forward CP (Communication Post) actually a REBRO or rebroadcast station! Where in operational zones a requirement for the sending of radio communications between HQ's and deployment troops separated by high altitude terrain and the like! An armoured vehicle would be positioned on a high point that allows unobstructed radio signals to all area's of operation and a duty of 24hours relaying messages is where I was at when my squadron Sergeant Major received a call from our RHQ back in Germany a family member had tried to call me to give me news dad was critical! My Sgt major was also my friend and had no way to get anything done to have me underway back to England! Didn't find out til I returned to my squadron HQ following morning by which time another phone call meant I was finding out that I had now lost my dad! Please forgive me for taking this convoluted route in making my point known! I was only a few weeks passed my 24th birthday! My heartfelt emotions with DE3 are obvious! To Dale Jr', I will never be able to stop your hurting, unfortunately! But hopefully by reading my message your understanding that the acuteness of pain will ease, not cease! but lessen to a manageable level but always have our dull ache of absence and missing our dad's! I pray your stronger than I found myself in my abilities to deal with the loss! Think I'm sure you are! I'm thankful for the fact of being allowed to be aware of your father's achievements and witnessing his long awaited Daytona triumph in 98! Which albeit through heart breaking tragedy has brought your own inspiring story of dealing with losing a dad to my attention. And which in turn gave me strength to hold onto and not let courage fail me! Thankyou and hold fast! always.
It's AWESOME that you all can bring back memories that made you mad, at the time but, you can laugh about them now!! LOVE the stories about your Dad and you. Was ALWAYS an Earnhardt fan... the whole family!! ✌ Jr. Be safe and 🤙
I went to about 10 12 races a year. Big earnhardt fan, Jeff changed the sport more than most people will ever know. Before Jeff drivers would sort of ride for 400 miles and race the last 100. Jeff ran every lap like a qualifying lap, he could and flat wheeled his car wide open every lap, rather it was at Richmond Bristol Charlotte Darlington or Talladega. That got under all the drivers skin i know. They knew you had to go right from the start because he would be gone. Dale, rusty and the rest had to play head games because that boy came to race. He wasn't intimidated by nobody. This coming from a lifelong diehard still today earnhardt fan.
No one is a bigger JEFF GORDON fan than myself. I hated everything and anyone EARNHARDT but after all of them retired, DANG how bad do I miss these guys and see how much they truly love each other genuinely!!!
Earnhardt Sr. was a hard racer but fun person. You hear the stories of the funny times drivers had with him makes me wish I could have raced and laughed with him
Such a legend 😎 Dale Sr. was my racing inspiration 🙏🏽 Peaceful Journey Legend! 😎 Feb 18, 2001 was both the most Iconic race for me and the most gut punching reality slap! Love Dale Sr so very much! When he ran (#5) Terry off at the finish my brother didn’t talk to me for 3 months!!! He was so mad! 🤬
Well Jeff, I would've loved to hear Dale Sr talk about the times like you are now as well. Priceless. I wasn't your fan. But I've never hated ya. Thanks.
I could listen to this for hours and hours. I miss the way NASCAR was before Brian France Jr. decided to destroy it. I haven't watched a NASCAR race since Jeff Gordon retired and I wasn't even a big fan of his.
I love stories. I never cared about nascar when watching with my grandfather but he loved #3 ... now they’re both gone and I wished I knew that I needed to be more present.
