There will never be another show or cast like in these first five years of "Dallas". The show continued to be good, but these early episodes were just so amazing.
Daniel Zanier I loved the smack. Although j r deserved allot more than a smack. Lucy’s mom did not take the money. She wanted to keep her self respect, and dignity.
Lucy went way down the San Antonio came up slow through Houston and up through Fort Worth and slap the hell out her uncle. She hits harder than any Ewing!
When I was little, we had a family friend who had a florist shop out of which she also sold pet fish. I was only 4 or 5, but I named all the goldfish after Dallas characters and the lone catfish after Jock. I still remember getting upset after learning that Sue Ellen had been sold! :-)
JR always looked at Gary as a weakling from Day One. JR was angry that Jock was so hard on him to be a successful Businessman, while Miss Ellie babied Gary. Also Gary never finished what he started. He had so many resources but he squandered them.
David Wicks: True, Gary wasn't technically a threat in terms of business, but having one more brother around, meant one more slice out of the Ewing cake that JR wouldn't have. JR was greedy.
Jock always had an "Issue" with Gary from Day One. He was too much like a Southworth and Jock never thought highly of Arthur (Miss Ellie's Father) and Garrison (Miss Ellie's Brother), he never thought much of either one of them because they couldn't hold on to the Land. Remember how angry he got when Garrison came back.
You're right. I always wished that in the "New" Dallas they would have both in Lucas Krebbs (Bobby's Bio Son) or even Gary's Kids (One of which was named after Bobby and Betsey) but they would have been treated like outsiders like Jamie Ewing (Jason's Daughter was).
I would've like to see JR slap Miss Piggy right back in the face. Miss Piggy, Pam, Bobby and Ellie were sickening, self righteous jackasses. Along with Donna, Ray and Clayton of course.
@@tombstone1111 She was a Little Girl who desperately wanted her Mama and Daddy to be with her at Southfork and it didn`t happen. The emotional ramifications were devastating. One bad relationship after another and sleeping with Men to get attention that she didn`t get from her Daddy. Remember her and Ray in The Pilot Episode.
JR always had this resentment with some justification because each parent favored a Son. Bobby was Jock's favorite while Gary was Miss Ellie's favorite. Also, when Gary was 18 he got Valene Pregnant, when she was only 15 and he couldn't handle the pressures of being a father and a husband. Although I don't condone JR for what he did to Gary, the more things change the more they stay the same. Gary still cracked under pressure and ran when things got rough.
Yeah, but Gary really got a slice of Humble Pie. Remember when Jock died, Gary got a percentage of the Ewing Fortune, while Bobby & JR, got their full inheritance.
He wanted Ewing Oil all to himself. Everyone was seen as threat; Gary, Val, Pam, even Bobby. He didn't want Bobby to have any children.. seen as threat to his offspring. Complete devil but people actually like him.
This was filmed in a real house in Dallas. They were at the same time, building sets to match it, in a Hollywood sound stage. They returned to this house in 1996, to film JR Returns.
Bobby: "And I Stood By And Let You Get Away With It And For That I'm Ashamed Of Being A Ewing!" Bobby, Gary's your brother but he's a grown @ss Man and it's not your place to fight his battles. Also look at The Outfits that Bobby & Jock wore. They were Light Colored to show they were the "good" Men in The Family while JR wore a "Dark" Suit like he was the "Devil". Sue Ellen knew what JR was going to do from The Get Go and she couldn't say anything.
I just had another thought. Wouldn't the Books be checked to see if Valene "did" take The Money. Valene did admit that she didn't take the Money from JR.
The character that we all loved to hate. Larry Hagman played the heck out of that role. I can't imagine anyone else who could've portrayed JR better than he did.
After a few years in Knots Landing, Val would have slapped the piss out of J.R. just like Lucy did. Better that than those scissors she went after Jill Bennett with. LOL!
Here['s a fun fact that I also discovered. Joan Van Ark made her bones guest starring on various TV Series in the 1970's including Wonder Woman (with Lynda Carter) and she worked with Ted Shackleford for the "First" Time. She like Jess Walton (Jill Foster Abbott #7) was on The Crime Drama Cannon multiple times starring William Conrad who also did the narration for Bullwinkle as well as the Documentary Of Moose & Men. Even if Gary & Valene had "Stayed" do you think they could handle her "Wildness" especially with Guys. They couldn't tell her anything because they would sternly remind her of what they did.
Yeah if you like Drama. I hated it sometimes. JR talking "Smack" about Pam's Real Parents, or Miss Ellie ruining The Takapa Deal etc. Also, Bobby meant well but he didn't know how to be "objective" but what does a 13 Year Old know about having a 18 Year Old Brother who gets a 15 Year Old Girl Pregnant, becomes a drunk, and runs out on his Family.
I wish they would have figured out better storylines for Lucy during the series. They really wasted her in the background a lot. Especially after she left and then came back for a few seasons, they'd just have her walk in a scene for a few minutes most episodes 😞
Jock obviously approved of what JR did, otherwise he would not have stayed silent. Bobby may not have been right all the time, but in this case I think he was.
I think I know why JR gave Gary those Business Papers, it was his way of showing that in The House Of Ewing everybody works hard to earn their keep (The Men in particular). After all, if Bobby could go from being a Roadsman/PR Man for Ewing Oil to an up and coming Executive, Gary could have tried too.
Yes, but Jock nor JR thought highly of Gary. For what it's worth, Gary was in luckier than Bobby, JR, or Ray, he didn't battle for Ewing Oil, he didn't have to deal with him sleeping with his Woman (Garnet McGee anyone), he didn't lose Ewing Oil and he made "Peace" with Jock where JR never felt he could have Daddy's love without bringing him a Multi Million Dollar Deal.

Around 1987 Pioneer Communications a New Defunct Publishing House had a Divsion called Soaps & Serials where they republished Stories From Another World, Guiding Light, Dallas, Knots Landing and As The World Turns. In The "Dallas" Book Lucy ran out into the Barn, broke down and sobbed and Ray Krebbs comforted her.
J.R. Drove them off on purpose being that he’s ruthless, evil,wicked,venal and most of all he hates his brothers Gary, Ray,Bobby,sister in laws Valene,Pam,& Donna. He also hates Cliff Barnes as well.
They were under so much anger, stress and tension they didn't think about doing that. Also, over the years sometimes when they walked into The Living Room, folks went in differently. Remember The Disco Episode, Miss Ellie & Pam were talking about Lucy, Jock had his Arm around Bobby, while JR & Sue Ellen walked behind them.
As much as I hate to say this, I think that Jock was glad that Gary was gone. I also wished that Gary, Miss Ellie, Jock, Valene & Lucy could have talked privately. In the Old School Book, Lucy ran out of Southfork into the Barn where she broke down and cried like a Baby and Ray comforted her feeling guilty knowing he played a small part in Gary's leaving.
@@lmdmn1645 That is true, even though she is a generation behind JR, she was well over 18, which is a legal adult, of course, by this point in the series. Despite the truth in my statement, this clip is not the best example for proving it.
Okay, here's what was really behind my comment. I'll try to explain without getting too far off the subject of this particular clip. Sebastian Maniscalco has a stand-up comedy video, and I'm not going to say the title of it, but it's available on RU-vid and on Facebook, and anyway the comments, mostly on the RU-vid share, are basically over-defending corporal punishment without much regard for keeping it reasonable, while at the same time saying how bad it would be, as a kid, to strike or slap an adult in any way, which, in my opinion, is hypocritical with a capital H. We all have our pet peeves, and one of mine is hypocrisy.
@@Newman-yo5xf He didn't know it at the time. He also got busy with Pam, as well as Sue Ellen, Donna & Jenna. Lucy in her own sad way went for "Older Men" because she wanted them to fill the void after Gary left.
You have that backwards. JR was a coward and a liar. He was weak. JR was the most conniving and manipulative of the brothers. And contrary to what's written presently in Wikipedia, it was Bobby who had the smarter head for business.
You mean Bobby, the guy who lost his temper at the drop of a hat and defaulted to his fists the moment words failed him? I don't equate beating people with smarts and real strength.
I mean like JR's temper tantrum when Bobby bought a refinery, something he couldn't do. Bobby got his temper from Jock. And like Jock, he never backed away from a fight.
Having a temper doesn't make one stupid. Bobby was certainly smart enough to beat JR in the battle over control of Ewing Oil, and he understood and believed as Jock did that both he and JR should run Ewing Oil as a team (at least he tried). And Jock wasn't stupid either - the whole point behind one brother working and keeping on eye on the other was to bring them together.
J.R. Deserved to be slapped in the face and later J.R. Gets a well deserved tast of his own medicine in Halleyville by Callys brothers, the sheriff there for being evil and trying to act like he owns everything there is. When his sister in law Kristen shot him he deserved it and had it coming to him.
You know what's so Ironic. At JR's Funeral Lucy talked about how bad JR was back in the day, but then she realized the fact that JR knew how to read a person better than anyone. I think that when she saw the Drama with Kit being Gay (which was taboo in the 1970's) not to mention Alan Beam, JR was so right on about them.
