What I loved about Miss Ellie was that she had such a way of putting you in your place that you didn't even realize that you were being told off until "after" the fact.
I love how Miss Ellie put Sue Ellen in her place here!! She shut down that shit Fast!!! LOL Sue Ellen and Pam didn't like each other much at this point in the series. But as time went on they became friends and were a lot closer, for sure!
That's a brilliantly choreographed scene, starting from the very beginning when we see Sue Ellen surveying her dreams of grandeur to getting her comeuppance at the end. There is a constant twirling motion that goes on throughout the entire scene, a circularity that just gets smaller and smaller until it unravels in the end. Sue Ellen loops into the scene, and slinks into the house, then twirls around the foyer, gliding up and down the circular staircase, and then is caught by Miss Ellie in a beautifully staged shot of the real mistress of Southfork looking down on the poseur, both separated by the labyrinthine structure that symbolizes the entangled power struggles of the Ewing family. Whoever directed that scene is a genius. And Linda Gray never looked more beautiful in that opening shot, like some vengeful bird of prey ... or a cat who just caught the canary. Sue Ellen Ewing was this show's true chameleon.
kdwestbrooks, 100% Agreement. At times Miss Ellie could be a G. What I loved about her was that she had such a Classy way of putting you in your place and you didn't realize she was telling you off and it wasn't until much later that you realized she was putting you in your place where you needed to be put sometimes.
Jason Raczkowski I know. I watched it on TNT. It was out of character of her to just up and leave Southfork & just hand it over to Bobby. I know Barbara was written out of the last season, but for her to leave for good made as much sense as Pam abruptly leaving Bobby & Christopher permanently.
MMAFighter38 I hated both of those storylines so much. The last few seasons of DALLAS were so painful. Season 9 (DVD10) was the least really great season, IMO.
This was before we discovered the more vulnerable side of SueEllen who didn't have friends because her whole life was taken up by J.R. and his ideas of how things should be.
Right! Sue Ellen couldn't even think for herself for a long time. Remember the Episode where The Ewings were taken hostage and before the bandits came on the scene, Sue Ellen bought some food up to Miss Ellie who was suffering a Migraine. Miss Ellie said Pam should be more "involved" with things but Sue Ellen said "But Miss Ellie JR says!"
Actually, they filmed in a different house for the first 5 episodes as well. This is the second home they filmed in beginning in episode 6. The sets used for the rest of the series were modeled after this home, and were used midway in season 1 (DVD season 2).
this is from season 2. i like the episode where pam asks sue ellen to lunch and sue ellen is like "You asked me to lunch to talk to me about a PARTY!!?"
I wish someone would upload the entire series! I loved this show. Because of it original time slot I missed a lot of episodes. I was young and it was Friday night! Anyone know where I can watch it on line?
"I find it more honest than waiting for Jock to die to become the Lady of the Manor." lol. Pam was out of line there. Southfork was Ellie's in the first place, not Jock's.
One of the other things you can distinguish between the studio house and the real one is the wind always howls up there in Parker, Tx. Somebody should have taken that advantage and put up wind farms at Southfork.
Definitely can tell that this is not the studio set, because you can actually see the upstairs from the bottom of the stairwell. Once they re-created this set in the studio, you never saw this shot; the upstairs was a separate set, and much bigger. Victoria, with her long auburn hair, looks her best here. She's stunning. She never should have cut it, or gone with all that makeup, as she did later on.
When they did the Dallas Reunion I would have loved for the two of them to talk about their Relationships as Sisters In Law. I'm sure that Linda Gray may have felt awful for how "Sue Ellen" treated Pam.
Pam always felt secure who she was and never seemed to care about the status of being "Mrs Ewing" while Sue Ellen lived for it. This scene is great--Pam is working and Sue Ellen is acting like a golddigger.
This is the 3rd show of the series and the first 6 or so shows were filmed in the Calder home in dallas while the Producers in L.A. built a replica of the inside of this home. U can tell by the Crystal ornament on the bannister at the btm of the stairs. In the studio the crystal knob is gone and in DALLAS: JR RETURNS IN 1996 they filmed inside the calder home again and u see the same staircase.
The set was expanded after the Southfork fire in 1983, and it received a badly needed upgrade. The decor changed slightly in 1985 (darker wood trim around doorways, different fireplace, etc.). It was definitely a welcome change. Oh, and LMAO at Miss Ellie wanting to borrow Pam's whip!
Ellie laughs about how much ambition JR and Sue Ellen have without allowing Pam to comment-she follows up asking if she smells coffee-the service is next to Pam’s wing chair b
@myrabradwell40 This isn't the original Southfork. The original Southfork was "The Box Ranch," and was only used in the first 5 episodes. This is the second Southfork used for the rest of the series.
Yes, the owner of the house they used for the 5 episode miniseries said no, when they asked to keep using the house, after CBS ordered 13 episodes for the 1978-79 season. It was too disruptive to his horse breeding business, all the cameras, actors, etc.
Guess who had her back behind Sue Ellen? Miss Ellie! That's right, because Sue Ellen couldn't get what she want, which was taking over Jock's company, I must say & that's no lie.
Yes, classic, but an unfortunate depiction of Sue Ellen. The Sue Ellen of subsequent seasons would have cared more about Jock's well-being. I think this may be the episode where the writers introduce her drinking problem.
Sue Ellen's biggest problem is that she never had a life outside of being Mrs. JR Ewing. She only disliked Pam in the beginning because JR did. Also, unlike Pam, Sue Ellen never had a job, at least in the early days. Another thing was that Miss Ellie should have put Sue Ellen in her place about her drinking and not to prance around Southfork and being so damned bold.
This is season 1, one of the first episodes of the 1978-79 season, where Jock had a heart attack while arguing with JR. This was all filmed in the summer of 1978. This scene was actually filmed in a real home in Dallas, while the sets were being built in California to match. Notice how we see all the way up the stairs and the balcony ?? They built the set in Calif different, just made the staircase, and it was more curved.
I never liked the music in these scenes. sounds too cheesey but love how Pam catches her waltzing down the stairs and Miss ellie catching sue ellen talking about taking over.. LMAO
