Everyone remembers Dean Jones' 210 at Madras, and Matthew Haydens 2001 tour of India, but nobody speaks about Damian Martyn's 2004 tour to India. 444 runs at 55. Most runs in the series from either team.
I remember this ,even in wc 2003 final and 2006 ICC CT also he delivered similar performance . At many occasions he always deliver his best . He is champion cricketer anytime . But I don’t know why he retired so early . I felt very bad because I missed his batting .
@@rasl2300 do some research , its all because Aussie selectors & team management want to replace him with THE Watson, an average batter & bowler (probably he has a big daddy with $$$x). Anyway, due to corruption, Aussie has no reputation in todays cricket. Winning a World Cup in home ground is childish as well as rabbish.
The players of 90 from all team had a different aura. Sachin, Azhar, Wasim, Jayasuriya, lara, Walsh, Waugh brothers, flower bros, Donald list is endless. Era of beautiful cricket.Still remembers the quaterfinal of 96. Cricket just lost its charm. Cricket was emotion now its just entertainment.
@@maheshtambe9535 bhai dil ki baat likh di tune. wo bhi kya din the. India vs Aus matlab India va AUSTRALIA... school se jaldi wapas aane ki koshish...raaste me kisi tv shop pe ruk ke score check karna. alag din they wo.
Players like Martyn, Bevan were clinical in what they did. Like a snipers go out and finish the job or set up a win and opposition can't even sense these guys took away game away from them. Class players!
One of the most underrated batsmen of all time. His test average should speak for itself. Perhaps just overshadowed by Langer, Hayden, Ponting, Gilchrist, S.Waugh. Tough to get remembered in amongst those guys.
+Josh Robinson i agree with u this is what i wanted to comment. He got overshadowed by other players. But he will be remembered as a greatest Australian Batsman of all time.
10 years later, he's one of the forgotten players of the game. An average of 46 shows he was no slouch. I'm sure our team now could do with someone like that.
Definitely. He's better than his average suggested since he averaged 46 away from home and did even better in tough conditions like India, SL and scored 2 centuries in SA. Almost completed 3 consecutive centuries in India with the 3rd one being a 97.
He's not forgotten just hidden in plain sight ! Damien was part of the mighty australian team and those who've watched him or even watched his clips of the shots he played still give chills and assert the dominance he had on the field !
Man I loved Damien Martyn. I remember I was 12 years old during the exotic 2006/2007 ashes, seeing Marto going through the form slump but I'd always betted he'd bounce back. I was stunned to see such a legend retire in the midst of that ashes. I think he had come of age but it would have been awesome to see him off with the rest of the stars at the end of the series.
He was the hardest of all Australian players for us Indians to get out. Almost scored 3 consecutive centuries against us. One of my all time fav players.
My all time favourite test batsman. Crisp timing in his shots and always appeared to play for the team, he did what needed to be done. I was heart broken after adelaide, i wanted him to come home and finish up at the WACA
in my mind, the most technically correct batsmen to have played the game. Guys like Ponting, Lara, Tendulkar and even Bradman had different styles with their batting technique, so if you're talking about the most technically correct batsmen to have played the game, it's Damien Martyn.
I understand your point of view. I would not say he was the most technically correct batsman to ever played. But i am sure of one thing that he was probably the best timer of the ball i have ever seen. Just effortless.
Timed his shots perfectly, the amount of times the ball hit the middle of the bat was amazing. Even within that Aussie line up, DM was my favourite. The mark Waugh of that team, had a certain elegance and nonchalance about his game…. Some of the shots he played in that 2003 finals!
Bevan, mike hussey and Damien Martyn one thing is common between them is they play in a difficult situation and score runs for their team and wins a match for Australia
Total class , his style has never been replicated by any player that ive seen in 50 years, the way he went out was also class the fact that he pulled up short before the Perth test was proof he is not a bigheaded money grabber like the lot we have now. People will have different opinions , but he did it his way , without withering and failing in the end as a batsmen. The quite achiever. Well done Marto
We witnessed many many coverdrives from his bat. no other bats man can execute cover drive like Demin Martin. One of the best technically bats men in the cricket playing countries I have ever witnessed. all d best Demin.
He was kinda emotional I guess. I heard that he made a mistake in his early career and because of that Australia lost a test match and he could not make his comeback in the side for 6 years. Well still a class batsman and underrated player. As he was playing with likes of Gilly, Ponting, Hayden, he didn't get that much limelight he should have.
Tanvir Ahmed Emon I think he got more supper from Steve Waugh and he always respect Waugh like anything . May be Australian management might have forget that who is Damien martin and Andrew Symonds . That’s why Australian team started to lose their dominance leaving these two .
He wasn't dropped because of that dismissal. He did score an impor5ant half century in the first innings. But Steve waugh was out injured and came back the next test. So Martin was dropped and a subsequent loss of form at state level meant that he didn't regain his spot 5 tests later against Pakistan when Border retired.
damien, youre the man in the subcontinent, saved australia many times there and will be the best number 4 in the current era. Too bad, damo, i never wanted to go out like this, at least a century before retirement but whatever it is, tke care.
When you are a legitimate star, but get overshadowed by superstars. West Aussie legend who is too often forgotten when remembering that great Aussie era
his retirement was shocking but it had do with team politics and inter squad rivalry. It was reported that he had spoken to Ponting about it and Ponting had asked him to continue playing but he chose to retire. In this way the Australian system is better. The never allowed these incidents to come out in public. For e.g. Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh did not like Gilchrist and they continued to prefer Healy but he came into the side at a late age and proved himself.
The way he got retired that made me agape cause at that point of time he was extremely good ,I've got just six all time best and favourites Martin is one of them
Martyn’s six off Kumble at 4:42 was at Chepauk/Chennai and I was there around long-off (the terrace - great view of the game!). And he brought up his hundred with that shot! Majestic rearguard innings. And I had Martyns sportsstar poster on my room at my childhood home (my only real home) ever since then! Also had posters of SehwagFlintoffLeeMcGrathTigerWoodsFederer on my real wall! Around 2004-2005! What a champ Marto!
damien martyn was my fave batsmen...great technique...good striker of the ball...made batting look so easy. but he was for the most part of his career highly underrated. and whenever he hit a bad patch his copped a lot of criticism where as batsmen like ponting or hayden can have huge slumps in form and the media hardly even takes note of it. very humble player which is what i admire most about him.
Ben Fordham what an imperious interview, looking for a story where there was none!!!! The truth is Damian Martyn one of Australia's most lissome stroke players, just got sick of playing and the scrutiny that goes with it, and he had the balls to go out on top and on his own terms, because he had a life outside cricket!!!!
He is my fav batsman, This video understands me a lot abt his ret. He can play for some more yrs, bt bad form discourages him n forced him to get back to home. WE WILL MISS U MARTO .. BE HAPPY
Beautiful to whatch I studied his technique His balance, and everything, about cricket To me he gave me strength balance a the love of BATTING CHEERS MART O LEGEND
Extraordinary cricketer bro🇮🇳 honesty is best policy 🇮🇳 you played cricket with your heart 🇮🇳 retirement decision is your personal life bro 🇮🇳 you should enjoy your life 🇮🇳 my wishes with you 🇮🇳 I was child when you playing cricket 🇮🇳
Would be handy to have him in the side now. With the exception of Smith has the opposite record when it comes to his overall average vs. average in SL and India. Played 8 tests there and averaged 54 with 4 hundreds. Current players from Australia seem to be averaging around 30 there.
Michael Clarke was playing in that team, maybe he said something he wasn't impressed with. Based on what happened with Clarke and Katich a few years later, I wouldn't bet against something along those lines.
@@shahezahmed9960 he shouldn’t have been there. He was kept on after Hughes terrible death for team cohesion which in retrospect wasn’t a bad move, given the circumstances. However it robbed George Bailey of his position as he well and truly outperformed Clarke in that team for the preceding 12 months.
he was my favourite batsman. i am not australian. in the world cup 2003 final in johannesburg, his slash hit 6 of a yorker length delivery from ashish nehra to the square of the wicket is the most amazing cricket shot i have ever seen. he was batting with and injured hand i remember. i shall miss him in cricket.
As an Indian even when our team lost i loved watching him bat .He was for Australia what Rahul Dravid for us.The wall.He once kept going it was difficult to get him out easily.I found him to be the hardest batsman to get out against India. Wideaway who dosen't wana retire when someone has got a hot wife at home with a horse :)hhahaha kidding
@Jason Bourne true, but while dravid was known for his style defensive technical perfection, Martyn was the most graceful offside player ever. Huge technical flaws in his game but utter beauty in his strokes.
Mark waugh was as stylish as Martyn, but for me Martyn was a better match winner + stylish combo than Mark waugh ( i mean in Australian team). I have seen him pull his team through tough sessions in Test match with elegance and hardwork.. Somehow mark gets more mention than Martyn just becos of more runs. I am sure Martyn, had he stayed, would have had more match winning innings than many in that team. Still remember him as the best player of spin from the aussie team, while touring tough home teams like Ind and SL!
And RU-vid recommended this masterpiece to me after 16 years. And yet they take surveys on "What do you want to be improved?" Just fix that fucking recommendation system mate. 😐😑
He was the opposite of Steve Smith now... he was the most elegant and beautiful batsman Australia ever produced! Lots of love from India.. Martyn's batting looked better than Ponting or Waugh... maybe in the top three of the most beautiful batsman of 90s and 2000s!!!
The underrated cricketer. As an Indian, still hate him for the runs in his 2004 India tour and in WC final. When India got all others out, Martyn would prop up all of a sudden and score as if it was easy. I respect Martyn more than Ponting since he played well in India.
An absolutely brilliant batsman, and a delight to watch... and, as good as his record is, can't help feeling he's probably underachieved. But, evidently, was never comfortable with the rigours and demands of being a modern-day professional cricketer. Several times, came across as arrogant, brusque, hostile and aloof and standoffish... But, yeah... a terrific bat.
