Love it! This is why we love the ashes. Mitchell Johnson tearing through the English is one of the best things I have seen. And when Anderson is swinging the ball through the air it's great to watch too.
Got a lot of respect for Clarkey. As a Brit, it hurts saying it but he is a top, top player and a top, top pro. Heat of the moment stuff such as this is fine by me. You need that aggression to be successful in professional sport. Good on him. Everything he said in this interview is spot on.
This sort of stuff gets said regularly on a cricket field. When you have a really aggressive fast bowler intimidation and getting in the batman's head is the number one tactic to get someone out. To say he's a bad captain for sticking to the plan is laughable. As far as field placings and bowler changes go, Michael Clarke is the best captain I've seen in 25 years of watching cricket. Some of the things that I've heard and had said to me during a game of cricket make this sound like a verse from the Bible. And James Anderson is known to be one of the worst sledgers in international cricket, he's been having a running battle with Australia for a decade

I get what you are saying but trash talking isn't always bad. In UFC they always do that. Even the greatest strikers like Connor McGregor etc trash talk a lot.
He was the worst Aussie captain in living memory, way worse than Kim Hughes. His blubbering and complaining that the pitches weren't to his liking during his last series in England was the most embarrassing thing I think I've ever seen from an Australian cricketer.
I don't think he was an effective captain or leader, but during the end of the video he makes some good points. Players should be assessed by their overall performance, not moments or individual innings.
So what do you base being "respectable and legendary" on? Do you know of the community work done by many cricketers / sporting people that rarely gets reported on or do you react to what you observe on TV?
A1r80rn3 Australians are famous in terms of sledging. I respect Brett Lee, Gilchrist. Look at these players. No matter they score or not their manner their sportsmanship and respecting opposition will never be forget. Thats why they will always be a legend a classy player and once u start scoring runs.. u r certainly a legend having all those qualities. Australians shud learn these etiquettes from their former players n follow them. Ponting Clarke n Now Smith.. no matter they play well but u will never be remembered then wts the benefit of representing your country and then shaming it coz of sledging. They will always be remembered+ Ponting, Clarke, Smith) as a captain who can go on any level to make a batsman out, ready to argue with umpires and fighting if 3rd umpire gives a correct decision against them. In the current Australian team i find no sportsmanship to respect their opposition, n if a batsman is not out, n umpire gives out.. u can set an example of calling that batsman again. These things wud always be remembered bt i find no one. Just hungry for sledging. No calmness only looking ways for wickets n if not getting.. then using their sledging as their last weapon.
I grew to like Clarke over the years. Didn't like him when he came onto the scene as pup but he proved me wrong with some exceptional summer performances. He admits he shouldn't have used that language (and he shouldn't have). He was a deserving Test Captain.
I was like woah Michael clarke and I get that he was defending debutant George Bailey at the time. He was just standing up for his players and I don't really blame him for using his language but accidently said near the stump mic
I think the ACB and Australian media tend to put too much pressure on their teams and players. Not balancing it out with actually building them up. Resulting in some dodgy behaviour sometimes or general fallouts. I also think the pressure and captaincy broke guys like Ponting, Clarke, and even Smith. Guys like Steve Waugh thrived on it though. But guys like Waugh, with that strong mental toughness is rare. Most guys need to know you stand behind them, especially in the tough periods. I dont think they get that in Australia. Btw: I am not Australian.
After reading autobiographies from the great Cricket players along with following their interviews and stories etc. This sledging from Clarke is relatively minor compared to in the past.
Clarke has had to show contrition on many occasions, certainly as captain. Having someone like Ponting as a leader didn't really offer many examples of humility and sportsmanship, but it taught him how to be ruthless and a world class batsman. I personally think like a lot of word class sportsmen, he has a different side to him on and off the field. He speaks well and often says the right things when it's time to be contrite. But he'll always cross the line on the field.

Bailey is a lovely bloke. Comes from that honest, fair and high morals and values cricketing family that also gave us Warner, Smith and the Chappell brothers 😂😂 Wonderful role models

There is a thing called individuality and personal behaviour of every player that has to be taken into account, regardless of which team they play for. The great Jimmy Anderson was dishing it out in that series to a bloke like Bailey, knowing pretty well that he is probably the only guy in that Australian team he is not going to get anything back from in return.
Well Josh Hanson Anderson has a reputaion of f'ing a blinding on the pitch. I'm not knocking his bowling, just he's silly the way he gets involved in stuff in the middle.
James Anderson deserved it, he sledges so much but as soon as someone sledges back to him, he cries about and complains. He said he was going to punch Bailey in the face, Clarke had every right to defend Bailey and sledge back to Anderson.

The good thing about the Australian media is that they ask tough questions of their players, and aren't afraid to call them out on their behaviour. Credit to Clarke for doing the interview as well. Way different to NZ where the media are just sycophants and totally biased.
I am an Indian but Ashes to me is THE series to watch. Australia have been my favourite team for a very long time now (along with South Africa) and obviously I was cheering for Aussies but this incident kinda hurt me. Aussies are so good at the sport so I never understood the need for sledging to begin with.
Year 2000: Australian players sledge, Australia wins matches Year 2010: Australian players sledge, Australia sometimes wins matches Year 2020: Australian players sledge, Australia doesn't win any match. Atleast they've managed to keep the sledging a constant.
Johnson was one of those Aussie players you really loved to hate along with the likes of Haddin etc but Micheal Clarke certainly went down in my estimation after that .

Clarke doesn't understand that Cricket is not only about being a good player, and that the attitudes towards opposition players also matter. Anyone can be just a good cricketer or a captain, but you need manners, good conduct and humility to be defined as being a truly classy cricketer. Clarke will never be classy because he's so immature that he'd say anything to defend his pride over truly petty issues
If you think that's poor conduct you haven't seen much cricket, especially club cricket you should hear the stuff coming from silly point. Furthermore, it's okay for Andersen to start incidents but not okay for Clarke to finish them? If you aren't aggressive and passionate about the game, you probably don't have what it takes to be an international player.

So, Clarke's ONLY regret was telling Anderson what Johnson's plan was! No doubt he would have put this down to 'banter' if Johnson HAD actually broken his arm. The man's a disgrace, still when you have crime in your genes, what do you expect?

Clarke is a strong character who sticks to his principles. Nothing wrong with what he said. I hated him when he was playing and that was because I felt he was was one of the toughest nuts to crack in the opposition. And that's the greatest compliment I can give him.
It's setting a bad example. Especially as a captain. It's not what the sport is about. Maybe in football or you Australian football but not cricket. Australia is the tumour of this planet
