Six years ago, I contacted their management to ask whether I could get a friend backstage to meet the Wilson sisters. He was going through cancer therapy, and needed a "pick me up". They generously allowed us to meet the ladies, who were two of the friendliest, down-to-earth entertainers you could ask for. An experience to remember. And, by the way, my friend's been cancer-free for over five years!
Gisselle ST is it possible that Justin likes their music a tremendous amount but has a different standard for beauty than others? Are we at a point where you can bully people to have the same likes and dislikes as you? I don’t want to live in your world full of bullies. Each to his or her own
Ann and Nancy are fantastic entertainers , very talented. Both are drop dead beautiful. Both are kindred spirits. I thank them for all they have given us.
I’m a Zeppelin fan going all the way back to the first time I saw them on stage in about 1970. The Kennedy Honors performance of Stairway To Heaven in my opinion was better than the original, and it’s hard for me to say that. Every single time I see it,it brings tears to my eyes. I LOVE this version.❤️
Now that's what a REAL journalist looks like. Damn near perfect interview. Starts off with gushing praise and softball questions and gradually dials it up. We have 3 national treasures on camera here. Thank you Mr. Rather. It's always good to see "is" after the name in Wikipedia. Still plugging along at 92!
The way Nancy talks about her Ann's vulnerability and how she would want to protect her all life, and everything she says about their relationship, is so beautiful. I think she has a heart so full of love and tenderness for her older sister that I'm not sure Ann understands.
Totally understand the feeling singing, “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You”. First time I heard it I was like this is just not right. You don’t just pick up someone in the middle of the night and not even know them then proceed to have a child with them. Just a very non logical thing to do as a woman or really anyone.
@@adelinogama9277 ok, well if one feels that way, that "this is just not right," basically that this type of a relationship is immoral, then one should feel the same about many issues that are moral issues.
Going to see them next Friday in Atlantic City at the hard rock for my 70th birthday with my daughter. Mom turned her on to them at a very early age.We cant wait!!❤
I love the respect these sisters have for each other. They took turns answering questions and didn't talk over each other. No divas in the Wilson family.
I had a brother he's passed away now he was so ashamed of me that he wouldn't allow me to look at him to talk to him when we were in school together and he didn't want anybody to know that I was his sister. Just because I was overweight. I love my brother very much but what he did to me when I was young still hurts today. I hope all of you appreciate your family and your friends that stick by you because they'll love you no matter what you look like.
@@AletaFlores I can feel the pain in the words you wrote. Thank you for sharing that. I can only hope that you have been able to move on and live the life YOU want to live, without others dragging you down. There is no one you can depend on more than yourself. At least that has been my lifelong philosophy. Best of life to you.
@@riverraisin1 thank you. I really appreciate what you said to me and how wonderful you put it thank you so much you made me feel so much better today when my little brother and I had our morning conversation over the phone by the way he is a great brother we did a little memory Lane talking and it actually helps a lot when you're able to talk out your feelings and because I love you so much and I know he loves me we can talk about things that happen in our childhood that are painful and it really helps to work through them but I want to thank you so much for everything that you said I truly appreciate it. Have a beautiful week no scratch that have a beautiful life 🧬
I honestly think the musicians of today really need to take a good hard look at these two incredible musicians, and realise this is what real music is. This is what real musicians are. These two are just so iconic.
Right? It doesn't seem that so many of the musicians today know anything about writing, playing, or performance in general. So happy listening to classic rock for the past 10 years (Thanks Heart!)
@@llarcher4558 exactly. Today's music is just auto tune and electronic crap. No real talent at all. You can't beat music from years gone by, when musicians had actual talent.
Too bad they can’t get Howard Leese, Fossen, Derosier & Roger Fisher back in the band. The new lineup just doesn’t cut it live. Fortunately I got to see them in 1980. THAT was Heart!
I've been a fan of (and had a crush on) the Wilson sisters since I was a kid in the late 70's. So much so, that as an 18-year-old Marine crossing the Kuwait border during Desert Storm, all the convoy could hear was Barracuda blasting out of my CUCV. The way I figured it, if I were to die that day, I wanted Ann's voice and Nancy's guitar to be the last sounds I'd ever hear.
Ann singing and Nancy playing "immigration song" at Kennedy Center and "Stairway to heaven" seeing Robert Plant wipe away tears watching and hearing the beauty of her voice, she really did them justice, and to be chosen to do that, gives an idea of how respected and loved they are in their own right. It's been awesome having them as the background music of my life story. I love and admire them so much. I never heard scandal about them back in the day either which was refreshing.
Holy cow, I had forgotten what a professional interview was like! I could only wish others would take note: THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE. Fantastic interview with a couple of my favorite iconic Rock stars.
I didn't think I wanted to sit through a 50 minute interview, but after 45, I didn't want it to end! Every time I hear these two ladies it lifts my soul. And Dan Rather is the best! Bold, without being a prick about it.
My mother had met Dan rather back in the 70"s. She said he was a gentleman. Just very nice. The history of him ìs incredible . Now he interviews musicians. And he knows what he is talking about. Good job mr.rather
I’m a 69 year old boomer who has experienced seven decades of popular music. I grew up with the Beatles and the British Invasion, but I have enjoyed music from every era. When I heard Heart for the first time, I felt that they were something special, and I still do. In 2011, my oldest son and I (I have three sons) attended a Heart concert and they were and still are one of my all-time favourites. They are definitely icons who changed the face of rock music, and worked hard to achieve their well deserved success. Thanks Ann and Nancy. 👍
Saw them in the Kibi Dome in Moscow, Idaho in the late '70's... terrific show including the (then regular) power failure of the left side of the stage!! In the early '80's my (at the time) ex girlfriend and I were summer camp counselors in Oregon. I found out Heart was playing Oregon and promised her I'd get tickets for her and her counselor friend... well, I put it off until a week before the show and while in Portland I figured "Well, better be the hero and get those tickets! Whaaaaat? What does "Sold Out" mean??!!" I was in such deep doo doo! It's okay, she married me 10 years later and we're still married!! (whew!)
Ann Has been and always will be a jewel. She is as Gorgeous as Gorgeous gets, The kind of woman that men dream about.. Her vocals will give you goosebumps, Pure Perfection
Ann Wilson, may be one of the greatest singers ever to step on a stage. At that the top of any list. I mean, I don't think that there are any women or men that can hit "LED" the way she did. At the Kennedy Center, she caused them to cry. I was blown away by that performance.
I saw Heart when they toured with Starship. We showed up a bit late, and they were playing Magic Man while we looked for our seats. When I finally focused on the band, I noticed one of the guitarists was wearing a skirt. Nancy wore her hair in a fairly short shag then, and because I wasn't close enough to see her face clearly it took me awhile to realize there was a woman up there shredding as well if not better than the guy playing lead. I've been playing guitar since '65 and was constantly told "girls don't do" a lot of fun things, like play guitar on stage in a rock band, and I was always an oddity/freak of nature for being the only lady in whatever band I was playing with at the time. Women guitarists fought an uphill battle back in the day, and Nancy Wilson was one of the talented women who inspired me to keep working at it. She was the shining light at the end of the patriarchal rock n roll tunnel for me.
Yes Wow seen Ann and Nancy in there Vancouver Days playing the clubs best bar band ever . Always followed your music so proud of both of you I hope I can see you again before we run out of sand lots of love keep the music coming
I saw them play in Nanaimo before their first LP. Then opening for Brownsville Station after Dreamboat Annie was released, they blew them off the stage.
Ann still looks vulnerable. I think she had a couple of stutter parts. I love what they said about each other. I like that Nancy said she wanted to protect her. They both look amazing.
@@christinaalgate4899 I think that comes with being an artist. That's where the absolute depths of your soul that you're willing to share resides..in vulnerability. I believe that's why she talks so much about authenticity.
The Heart with Wilson Sisters one of my bands 70´s and they were great too in the 80´s. Nancy is a great guitarist some men could envy her performances. She´s a teacher of guitar! Ann´s voice is simply lovely to my ears, both in rock and soft songs. In this interview they still looked very pretty wow! women. Greatings from Havana, Cuba.
Gheez where do I start 😊 me myself Born in Chicago in the early 60s moving 2 Washington State in August of 1970 ... so I was close 2 all there beautiful music ... literally they both Ann & Nancy would play local clubs in the early days so me being 2 young 2 enter the Clubs early on I would go Very early 2 set-up and talk my way into helping set-up & once in I would work my ass off and get asked 2 stay back stage and watch the Show ... I could go on forever I love 💘 the 2 from the bottom of my heart ... many parties many shows & lots of Rock & Roll ... I believe in my Heart these 2 Beautiful Souls are a true gift 🎁 from The Big Guy in the Sky, God !
Wow that's an awesome experience to have I'm so happy for you that you were able to see them from years ago I was born and raised partially in Tacoma Washington so I wasn't too far from Seattle but by the time the sisters were there I was somewhere else I mean we moved around a lot. I just glad that you were able to experience that.
I was thinking the same thing! She is so soft spoken when she speaks her voice is so gentle. But when she sings, look out!!! Truly remarkable (to say the least!!) I love them both, and admire them so much.
They seem like such sweet people. I can tell it was hard for them selling out in the 80s. Today all music artists are sell outside. But these two you can tell have heart and morals.
Dan Rather listens and develops their words, it so refreshing where he doesn’t compete but genuinely wants to listen and allow them to tell their story. Brilliant👍
Yeah but he was permanently disgraced as a newsman following the fabricated documents about George W's military record. He probably should've stayed with interviewing instead of news.
2 incredible artists. Anns voice has gotta be one of the most powerful, soulful voice there ever was. Nancy can sing as well but holy crap she can play that guitar. They were better than many many men which shuts up all those, women dont belong in rock jerks.
really? Nancy seemed to be just chording on all clips I've seen? there was some other guitarist "off camera" actually doing the lead playing? any examples? not to detract from the band, after all the performance is mostly the "show", but why exaggerate?
@@GypsyFairy85 OK, I'll grant her that, John Lennon was someone I admired, and he also was an excellent rhythm player, but I would say not a remarkable lead player.
@@juhanleemet Nancy never played lead in Heart. It was Roger Fisher, then Howard Leese, then more over the years who I haven't kept up with. Jerry Cantrell has said he has stayed up all night just jamming with Nancy. She is inventive with hands like steel.
Heart was, is and will forever be an iconic and legendary band with tremendous everlasting talent. I really hate when Ann is asked about her weight. She is gorgeous with a one of a kind voice that transcends the sky. Saw Heart in concert a few years ago and they sounded even better than in the late 70's. Heart, we love you and thank you so much for the songs and memories, Keep it coming!!!!
Yeah, what if they'd hassled Meat Loaf about HIS weight back in the day when he was so big? I bet nobody ever said, "Meat, you should lay off the tacos, doncha think?" BTW, I'm just using him as an example. I love Meat Loaf, fat or thin, singing or acting. Never really took himself too seriously, and that's a good thing in a pop star.
I could not look/hear away. Perfect interview by Dan Rather, but seeing these two 'demi-Godesses' speak with and about each other with genuine love, completely confirms how high I hold them in esteem. Their music is second to none and their credibility is incredible. I love Ann and Nancy Wilson. I am from Vancouver BC. I saw them at my High School (Sir Fredrick Banting Jr) in the 70's.
There exactly the way I thought they were, alot like my nieces, who are huge fans and have that sister love that Ann And Nancy have, it's a beautiful thing to see!
Two of the most wonderful, loving people in the world. I would love to have either or both of them as friends. BTW - Ann, I think you have every right to decline any song your heart does not embrace. Sincere thanks to all three of you for this touching interview.
I’ve been in love with Anne since I was 13 in the early 70s. These two are icons in the music world. What a treat that they also seem to be awesome humans on the inside as well. A fan for life
Love these two ladies and one of the best interviews I have ever watched. Just fantastic job by Mr. Rather. A high integrity discussion and insight into two rock legends.
Strong, beautiful and very talented women. Grew up in a "mans" driven profession and has out run most of them who were relevant back when they started. If anything, they are more powerful now than they were then. Ann Wilson has one the most powerful voices in all of music and she's in her 70's now and still hits all the notes.
When ladies were secretaries & waitresses, here comes the Wilson Sisters? They paved the ways of many? Full of raw talent & steel ball's? Yep, Ann's voice, one of the greatest of the 80's, with Nancy on 🎸, a combination that couldn't be beat? Plus first ballot Hall of Famers, that in itself speaks volumes? Talk about being at the right place in history they pulled it off admirably!
I saw Heart for the first time at the Fabulous Forum and was really excited to see them. I wasn’t aware of the fact that Ann had gained a lot of weight. Some idiots around me were saying really cruel things which really made me feel extremely sad. To think that someone can be THAT talented and still be judged harshly by others with absolutely NO talent. Ann came out and killed it which shut the morons up a bit but just to realize what a shallow society we live in, it’s pretty depressing.
Wow, what a pathetic couple idiots, why be there to see the two greatest woman to honor the Rock stage if you're only there to make fun, and of what? Ann and Nancy rock always I wish I'd been there with ya✌️💙🎄⛄
That was a stellar interview, Mr. Rather. And to the Wilson sisters: So talented, so accomplished, but yet so down-to-earth and, to echo Ann's word: Authentic. Thank you for all you have done for the world of music and in being just fine examples of humanity.
What a decent interview this was. Two Seattle sisters in a rock band. They love each other dearly and respectfully. What a memorable career for both. The led zep tribute was fantastic. I cried watching it because it was better than the original. Way to go gals. Thanks for the tunes and thanks utube.
Their flow. They're down to earth. They take things with a grain of salt. Notice, they are old school polite, and treat each other well. Thanks for all your years of music. God Bless. And keep playing your hearts out.
It pretty much does not get any better than these two ladies! They are off the charts talented, humble, true to themselves and a hell of a lot of fun to watch! Wish them the best of luck always! A total class act all the way around!
I agree. Great interview. I saw Ann in my hometown a few months ago and Nancy came on stage for encore of Barracuda. She lives in my town in N. cal. I the saw her at my local airport. I was traveling with my guitar. She was so nice and down to earth when I talked to her. I plan to see them 2 times current tour and can’t wait. These women are amazing! Also, the rest of tour group has amazing musicians.
I just love Nancy's giggles. They may have felt like "sell-outs" in the 80's . . . but I loved the big hair, shoulder pads, heavy eye shadow and especially their music during that era.
What a great interview of 2 beautiful, strong, trailblazing women in the world of rock n roll. I have always loved their music and have been intrigued by their journey through the world of rock in the 1970's and on. So much that I never knew, and am so happy that Dan Rather interviewed them. An iconic interviewer of 2 iconic women. I'm truly happy that I ran into this article. Thanks for the memories and letting me relive them. They are an influence in my life as I went through high school in the 70's. "Dreamboat Annie", "Little Queen" playing on an 8 track in my car, cruising on a Friday, Saturday night. Great memories!! Thanks.
Such a great interview. The Kennedy Center performance is nearly supernatural. Every time I watch it, I hear or see something new. It's always an emotional experience.
Great interview of two rock legends. Wished they were asked about their start in Vancouver-they played the local high schools around the city in the early/mid 70's and recorded their first album Dreamboat Annie at Mushroom Sound in Van.
Are people still talking about Ann’s weight? I know that the touch up on the subject in this interview, but this is 5 years old. As long as ann is happy and healthy, that’s all that matters. It’s a shame that she got so crucified by the media because she put on a few pounds here and there, which overshadowed her amazing voice that is now, was then and probably always will be completely unparalleled
Rather is the absolute Gold Standard in interviewing. His questions reach so far below the surface--and then he lets the guests speak. And these two women.... Simply amazing in every respect. So lovely to see long-lived success come to those with integrity. I wish I had a sister the way they do in each other.
First, please you journalist out there take notes on how to do an interview from Dan Rather. He is so masterful and like others have said before he ask the question and let’s the guest answer. Been a fan of Heart forever and this just reinforces my great admiration for these 2 beautiful women and not on the outside, more importantly on the inside. This is why they have prospered all these years and I wish them all the best. Keep on entertaining us please so that we can enjoy both of you.
