One of my fave scenes from this movie starring Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth ...gotta love the sigh at the end =) courtesy of Columbia Pictures. I claim no rights.
I can see why Rita Hayworth became such a great star. She literally dominates the screen. And all she did was dance, flash her eyes and smile seductively.
Hey, people: Her actual name was Margarita Carmen Cansino (as far as I know). And as for the flamenco dance, that's in her roots, too. Her father was a flamenco dancer.
She was a true dancer. In all Hollywood history this is one of the rarest moments we can see a true flamenco dance. Observe when she dances with her real master uncle she goes to the top of her dancing skills. The same occurs with Fred Astaire. She was not just as beautiful as Heaven, she was a true genius in arts.
She is really charming and a good dancer in general but this is not true flamenco dance, it is a shocking interpretation of what flamenco is with some little things being remotely accurate. I would not consider myself as an expert but I have been listening flamenco since childhood and dancing flamenco for several years now.
It was always a treat to see Rita dance, because when she danced she came alive on film. Dancing was her real passion (and her earliest training), more so than being sexy or dramatic- and it showed. She even commented how the films she enjoyed the most were the musicals she did with Astaire and Kelly. And in this brief flamenco, you can see the joy again- the Cansino roots. Marvelous.
Beautiful Rita Hayworth. What a pleasure to watch her dancing! Glenn Ford was a lucky man---he played five times opposite Rita. Yes, Rita had Spanish blood too. Passion, class, beauty and flamenco---who would ask for more?
The irony of her appearing in "The Many Loves Of Carmen" is that Carmen is her middle name. Her real name was Margarita Carmen Cansino. Her father was born in Spain. When she started appearing in movies, she tried shortening her name to Rita Cansino, but the big Hollywood executives thought the name was still too Latino for American audiences, who were used to actors and actresses with Anglo-Saxon names, so they decided to replace Cansino with her Irish mother's maiden name, Haworth. It was pronounced "HAY-worth," but the same Hollywood big shots were worried that audiences would think Rita's name was "HA-worth," so they added the letter "y" so everyone would know how it really sounded. In other words, Rita Hayworth was a Hispanic pretending to be an Anglo-Saxon pretending to be a Hispanic! Incidentally, the original spelling of the name Hayworth, without the "y," was still used by British actress Jill Haworth, who's best remembered as the first one to play Sally Bowles in the original 1966 Broadway musical version of "Cabaret," the same role that was played by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film adaptation of the play. Ironically, more people remember Miss Minnelli's version of Sally (who's an American) than they do Miss Haworth's take on the character (who's English).
Rita Hayworth was most of the reason shaping my becoming a romantic man as I watched few of her movies in late 1940's as a teenager. She was oozing with sensuality and sexuality... and I was completely charmed and attracted by her! What a woman... she was! Thank you
She had this ability to mesmerize. It was a combination of qualities that combined was like lightning in a bottle. Glenn manages to hold his own, but she's on another level.
It was always a treat to see Rita Dance on screen. She imo is the best dancer in Hollywood. I loved her energy, her beauty and how seductive she was. She always looked she enjoyed herself when dancing here or alongside Fred. She really was a woman of many talents
I remember when my beloved Mother told me that Rita Hayworth danced flamenco with the castanets, I never knew who she was? I'm so astonished by watching Rita dances. She has a seductive smile, as she dances around Glen Ford with her castanets.
What a woman... Beautiful, good actress and also a great dancer Perfect mix of Irish (mother was Irish-English) and Spanish (father was Spanish Gitano (Romani))
Her mother was the daughter of an Irishwoman and a Englishman with noble ancestry. Her father was a Spaniard from Andalusia, so he did have Arabian blood in his veins. Unlike Rita's haters usually state, she took great pride in her Spanish origin - she also took pride of the Anadalusian people's Moorish roots.
She was not only a professional dancer it was in her spirit. I have never seen such a beautiful dancer with so much beautiful natural sex appeal. It was all natural 😊
He didn't use the term incorrectly. A Spaniard is defined as "a native or inhabitant of Spain, or a person of Spanish descent." Obviously, Spanish is correct too.
@Jessie W Not in real life. She had Spanish blood and some drops of Arabian blood in her veins, for her father was born in Andalusia, but she wasn't exactly aa gypsy. I would say she had a gypsy soul.
@@renarga6886 Where do they get all this nonsense from?. Who the hell told you that Andalusians have Arabian blood? You are like the Latin Americans who are always talking rubbish about Spain and the Spaniards. ignorant. www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-41580-9 Published: 26 March 2019 Genetic structure in the paternal lineages of South East Spain revealed by the analysis of 17 Y-STRs " By AMOVA and STRUCTURE analysis, the populations of the 3 provinces could be treated genetically as a single population. The most frequent haplogroup was R1b1b2 (58.22%). By network analysis of all individuals, we observed a distribution according to haplogroup assignment. To improve the characterization of GMA population, it was compared with those of North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and southern Europe. In our analysis of allele frequencies and genetic distances, the GMA population lay within the Spanish population group. Further, in the STRUCTURE analysis, there was no African component in the GMA population, confirming that, based on our genetic markers, the GMA population does not reflect any male genetic influence of the North African people. The presence of African haplogroups in the GMA population is irrelevant when their frequency is compared with those in other European populations "
Que filme divino! Lindo né? Rita Hayword reproduziu a típica dança calon.
From the 1948 movie, based on the same short story that was the basis of the opera. Rita Hayworth's dance partner is Jose Cansino, her uncle. We might ask, How did she get castinets, and in both hands so quickly?
@twtape, Thanks. I would like to see Rita and her father dancing. None of her brothers become a dancer. It seems that only Rita inherited the dancing talent of Eduardo Cansino. They were a dancing team for a while because they looked brother and sister.
I'd like to start by talking about Rita. She does a great job on this film, she looks beautiful, but I particularly prefer the actress in the black and white films. It seems to me on the silver screen that she looks like a goddess of love. Watching her in the role of Carmen has a special flavor because both are of Spanish origin. Carmen's character was a pioneer (not official) in the struggle for the emancipation of women. She has strong personality and owns her nose. It is a pity that these qualities are seen as defects and that the girl is frequently beaten and victimized by verbal and physical violence. Overall, the story goes for fun, even though it's against the gypsies. They appear as villains, traitors and cowards.
Rita Hayworth herself was a pioneer, both in the struggle for the emancipation of women and in the fight against Censorship. Today's pseudo-divas have A LOT to learn from her work and her story.
Of all the Hollywood glamour actresses of the 20s ,30s ,40s and 50s, Rita hayworth was the epitome of star quality in every aspect! I'm gay,83yo,and have been in awe and in love with her since GILDA! Each time I see her film clips, I welup.
Feras!
No that was not her real last name. She ran away from Delray Michigan to become a movie star. She was Rom. (Gypsy). Her brothers name was Johnny. We called him Johnny flat nose. We all have nicknames and everyone forgets the real name. She was a Ballog and Favor. Her family came from Zempleaska Slovakia. She was promised to someone and didn't want him she wanted a carrier in acting. Her family is in Las Vegas now. I could go on from what I know of her and the family, because of Johnny. Very very nice carrying family..
The tragedy of Rita Hayworths final years is truly awful , her Alzheimer's diagnosis came far too late , Hollywood labelled her a drunk and plastered images of her looking scared and afraid experiencing bouts of confusion all over the press at the time .. its impossible not to see those images and your heart not just break for her. Truly a wonderful and exceptionally talented woman ❤️
The co-star in this movie was Glen Ford, who later said that this was the one movie where he made a point of NOT being Glen Ford but actually sank himself into the role .... yet the movie was considered a dreadful failure.
For people claiming she was Spanish. WRONG. The Flamingo dance was created by Roma or Gypsys as a f..k you dance because they was bricking us in our homes to die. They only gave very few a chance to get away. If we spoke the tounges would be cut out. That's why the Flamingo dance came out. It was a very dirty dance for the soilders killing and chopping us up.
She was a genuine American! She wasn't born in Spain and wouldn't have been seen as Spanish in Spain because she didn't speak the language and wasn't a Spanish citizen. I don't understand this obsession Americans have with race, it's absurd.
Unsexy ? !! I guess all depends on what "sexy "mean to you.I would say that in films they were a pretty good match like Katharine Hepburn with Spence Tracy."Sexy" or not we felt the chemistry between them .
