DANGEROUS APPROACH!! - Landing the Global Express in San Diego

Welcome to San Diego airport, nominated as one of the US' most dangerous approach!
Honestly, if you asked me, it's all sensationalism. It all comes down to common sense, training and most of all, proper prep.
As you'll see in this video, the reason behind this approach being a bit trickier than most is simply this: a steeper approach gradient.
See, most typical approaches follow a 3 degree slope (300' descent per nautical mile traveled). San Diego, because of the slope and the buildings along said slope, demands a slightly steeper approach profile (3.5 degrees). That about sums it up.
Watch the video to learn about the process, the briefing, and the planning for this approach, which in turn mirrors most briefings and planning we do as a crew prior to any approach around the world.
Welcome back to the Global Life!

That world famous parking garage right in the approach path is what makes it so tricky... well done sir!

Great video. Although a view out left side of the aircraft of all the downtown and the high rise buildings is quite impressive.

What a great video! I’ve watched from the ground the approach into San Diego it’s superb! I appreciated you taking the time to explain all the inputs to the flight computer for your approach. Thanks again.

I came here just to watch that view over the 5 freeway. On the ground the plane looks so much closer than it does in the cockpit. Cool video

Maaaaan that was some float there on the landing but a beautiful touchdown. I fly the Sovereign - cool seeing the same avionics in your plane. Nice job!

I saw nothing dangerous about this approach other than the guy floating halfway down the runway before touchdown.

Honestly this has come up a few times and yes it was a dangerously long landing. As a crew we've matured much and realized this will not happen again

It's the parking structure you have to fly over on approach. Certain types and situations only clear that by 12 ft.

It's called a clickbait. People will do anything for views these days.

Exactly the reason it referred to as a “dangerous approach”The floating can be pilot induced by prolonged flare and late power retard but it is the nature of steep approaches to chew up runway due to forward momentum dissipation taking longer than normal glide path approaches. Check London City for the same if not more significant as it is a steeper approach still.
@lexroc45
@lexroc45 3 года назад
There are mountains east of KSAN that force a short approach, then you are forced to take a steep landing because of an obstacle in the form of a parking structure right at the foot of the runway. Not to mention a relatively short runway especially for “heavys” that frequent the airport. But as a passenger, one of the best scenic landings!

If you like these approaches you should come and enjoy Innsbruck (LOWI) for the mountains and the steep approach or Lugano (LSZA), London City (EGLC) is interesting too steep approach with often X-Wind and also a bit of fun if you go for a visual landing in Samedan (LSZS). I know there are a few fun one in the US and I have enjoyed them too 😉but San Diego not yet hopefully one day though…

We've done Innsbruck - even have a video ;) Sadly the XRS is not certified for London City . Who knows if I get on a newer model some day though ;)

As a passenger I've always considered the approach to Lindberg a pretty flat approach (but I wasn't flying the plane 😏).
@iain8837

Prob just feels like it due to the slope of the hill on approach, feels like you are always the same height until close to the runway.

Well documented tutorial! So you did the steep approach as LPV or LNAV/VNAV? Do you have a “STEEP” annunciation light alert when conducting the approach as we do on Legacy 650? Do you have a RAAS annunciation going orally the runway distance remaining.

It’s even more dangerous when you float out of the touchdown zone
@GlobalLife
@GlobalLife 2 года назад
That cannot be argued. We definitely discussed this as a crew afterwards and you can be sure it never happened again. The global with extra speed on the ref (required as per the Supplement) floats for ever
@gnnascarfan2410

I wouldn't say as a passenger it's dangerous, pilots just have to be mindful and careful of the parking garage and buildings at the end of 27.

Are you programming the FMC or is it called an FMS? Isn't the FMS the whole system and your glass panels and the FMC is the navigation computer?
@GlobalLife
@GlobalLife 5 лет назад
Great question! FMCs are typically a less capable version of full fledged FMS. A PC12NG for example is an extremely advanced aircraft and has an FMC, which does a lot but not all that an FMS can do. In our case we have 3 FMS, each a self contained unit receiving positional information from our IRS and GPS equipment

I loved the video but was concerned about the noise level with no hearing protection. Do you normally wear noise cancelation?
@GlobalLife
@GlobalLife 7 лет назад
Hey Jim! The video makes the noise sound a lot worse than it was. At FL430 the cockpit noise level is very comfortable and doesn't require noise cancellation equipment. We can have a normal conversation and hear ATC over the speaker no problem. As we start descending, the wind rushing by the windshield is what creates most of the noise as the engines themselves are very quiet.
