I still think it’s far fetched to say that Olives had more grappling success against Islam. I think Islam controlled him got more effective takedowns, reversed olives attempted takedown. Had him squished against the cage in a bad position. Defended submissions. Eventually, got the submission easily and passed his guard altho olives stunned. I think olives’ submission attempts weren’t as threatening however the triangle was the main factor of success. But other than that I think Islam had more success and even had side control at one point.

I don’t think wrestling is necessarily charles weakness but i do believe wrestlers with above average bjj defense can keep him down & g&p him as long as they stay in his guard or pin him against the cage where he can’t go for subs if you try to stack or pass his guard thats when he can do work off his back

In regards to the Islam fight, it really was just fantastic game planning. If I remember correctly Islam never even shot a takedown, every TD came from the clinch because he knew Oliveira had a nasty guillotine. He wasn't afraid of going to the ground like alot of guys were he just made sure to mind his P's and Q's well he was down there. I still have no idea wtf that jump knee was Oliveria threw before getting cracked tho.

It all depends on your perspective of the fight. One perspective is that Kevin Lee had success on the ground in his ability to get out of submissions and eventually end up on top in a dominant fashion at the end of the round against one of the best submission artists the UFC has ever seen! The fact that Kevin Lee did not get submitted in the first round is incredible. It might be that Cormier's perspective is that Kevin Lee success was that he was able to defend all those submissions, and very few fighters could have defended them. I do think Cormier could have phrased it differently, but it is what it is. There is no doubt that Charles is a beast off of his back, and is considered the best submission artist off of his back that I have ever seen. Islam is a more well rounded fighter than Charles, and that is why Islam beat him. Charles and Islam will fight again, and we shall see if Charles was telling the truth or just full of excuses that he said he wasn't himself during that fight. BTW - I see Charles submitting Arman in the first round!
