So, my Danny Kaye story which I wrote somewhere. Anyway, in 1960, I was an army lieutenant, going from Fort Sill, Oklahoma to Korea. Stopped in Las Vegas, not to gamble because I knew statistics, but maybe see a show. Danny Kaye was there but I could not get in because I was too late, or I did not hand the guy a fin, or I was not on the list, whatever. I was not surprised. So I went to the First Cavalry division, on the DMZ, in Korea, and what to my wondering eyes should appear, on Christmas Eve, 1961, in the gym, but Danny Kaye. So we were all rounded up, and I could hardly believe it but, there he was, with his piano player, and no one else. No Bob Hope show. Just him and the piano player. And he did the crazy Russian, and all the routines, without any straight man, he did both parts, and here we were, on the DMZ, waiting for an alert, everybody loaded with rifles, machine guns and I was hoping nobody dropped one. They didn't, and Danny got a standing ovation (no guns dropped.) So to this day I think that maybe I was not supposed to see him in Las Vegas, but somewhere else, more important. The troops loved him and it made a memory for me, and I guess for them, that we would never have had. I stayed in, retired as a colonel, and like to think that he is up there, in the big USO in the sky, and before I get there I will hear the sounds of laughter.

VIEW ALSO Danny Kaye Pier Angeli Salud in Merry Andrew MisterScott99 Exhilarating musical number from the obscure but wonderful film, based on the Paul Gallico story "The Romance of Henry Menafee." Danny Kaye is accompanied by the beautiful Pier Angeli and the legitimate opera star Salvatore Baccaloni. Music by Saul Chaplin, arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle. Lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Choreography by Michael Kidd. Filmed in CinemaScope by Robert Surtees. Film is copyright by MGM and is excerpted here under the Fair Use section of US copyright law. /////// Trialk Angedint Whatever he does , it in his own way simply that unique , impossible to copy him , I simple have no bad memories at all, why is it quite hard to find his films is a complete riddle for me , so many people think likewise magnificent for example his five pennies or me and the colonel.( Curd Jurgens ) ////////////// kittkat42 I know that people thought this movie was bad, but I can remember watching it as a kid, and even now I still love it. I adore Danny Kaye.//////////// 57silverhawk I can't believe I found this on RU-vid! Thank you SO much for posting it! My mom had the soundtrack record album when I was a kid, and we always loved this song. Watching the performance is a real treat! /////////////// Andrew Weitzen Thanks so much for posting thins. Just saw it on TV and wanted to send a link to this incredible sequence to some friends. /////////// Russo Lewis We miss you Danny...very very much...you made sense of the human heart //////////// Brian Quinn I haven't seen Merry Andrews in years. Thank you for posting this! ////////////// penciltest2 Isn't this a great number?? -- I had forgotten this film had some good numbers. Unfortunately, the first time I saw it on commercial tv, they cut the numbers out of it. I grew up thinking that this would have been a good musical. -- And wouldn't it make a great stage musical now??? A little story re-write and a Danny Kaye type, it'd be fun. -- Wait there ain't no Danny Kayes of today. See America?? Stop encouraging American Idol! //////////// R Pollack Who wouldn't join the circus to be with Pier Angeli? What song can't Danny Kaye make at least interesting and fun? A favorite album of my distant youth./////////// Josh Freilich Yeah. He was an artist. Especially when it came to dialects.///////////// daniel benchu película entretenida. Danny como siempre espectacular. //////// problembaerli what a great song, what a nice performance. danny kaye was a real master of light feeted but high quality comedy. immortable! ////////////// warnerarchive Danny Kaye delights in this whimsical musical that celebrates the circus of life. Free from schoolmaster duties for the summer, amateur archeologist Andrew Larabee (Kaye) arrives at his prospective dig site only to find it inhabited by a circus. While pursuing his dusty dreams, Andrew discovers his true calling might just be more clownish than he had imagined. This musical's already abundant charm is further buoyed by the wonderful score by Saul Chaplin and Johnny Mercer, orchestrated by Nelson Riddle, and the directing debut of Michael Kidd. This CinemaScope charmer is making its home video premiere (with original StereoPhonic Sound intact!) and awaits a worthy rediscovery. 16x9 WIDESCREEN. ///////// RU-vid Movies Archaeologist Andrew Larabee tunnels below an English meadow, seeking a rare historical relic. His shoveling takes him back to the surface...and into the lions' cage during a circus act. Just like that, a star -- or at least a Joey -- is born. A Joey is circus-speak for clown and who better to play that clown ////////////// Jeff Clark This movie clip explains, through a song, the Pythagorean Formula, which is the square of the hypotenuse of any right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the two remaining sides. //////////// Leslie Best I love all of Danny Kaye movies. but Merry Andrew is by far my favorite. I simply adore him and always will. //////////// My Little Dog Shoppe South Park PA Tommy Rall (red shirt) amazing as ever and plays off of Kaye wonderfully! He is by far the best dancer there but Kaye never ceases to be a complete entertainer. Luv them both. ////////// Antonio Barreto Mais de 50 anos após ver este filme, continuo a ficar emocionado ao ouvir esta musica Salud interpretada por Dany Kay. ////////////// lark005 Thanks for this great vid. This has always been one of my favorite movies. Makes you want to get up and dance along with Danny! ///////////// Tee someone asked me how I was and the first thing that popped into my head was "everything is tickety-boo" ! i never use that phrase, but I will now. /////////// sunny chuang It's such a fine day for the townspeople to have great fun and to sing along with the English school teacher Mr Andrew Larabee (played by the ever-sprightly Danny Kaye) who was in the pleasant mood while riding in his bicycle. This was one of the most-memorable and very-entertaining musical numbers in 1958 MGM's Merry Andrew. Indeed the versatility, spontaneity, and credibility of Danny Kaye in his hilarious and musical scenes were/will always be momentous, unparalleled, and tickety-boo. //////////// Koeshey I think I have been in madly love with Danny for years. He died when I was just a few months old, but I've heard his voice more then any other mans. He is there when I need him, makes me laugh when I'm sad, and his smile is the most adorable thing. I saw an old record of his in a antique shop once, and I fainted, lol! I'm 26. /////////// PismoBeach I've been looking for this for decades. Thank you! ////////////// Sally Ann Loveday Danny Kaye always makes me smile... his singing and acting are simply wonderful... Love it, the tune is now well and truly stuck in my 'bonce', and still making me smile...58's Danny R.I.P. ///////////// Ian Brandsgaard Danny Kaye was such a good entertainer. dena if you are behind this your dad was a huge influence one by his movies and two by actually meeting him. in 1984 I was in a children's home for behavior problems. most other kids were orphans in there and those were the ones Kaye came to visit but, most were too damaged or timid to go to Kaye, but me as a behavior Fwit I didn't give an F! More over I was a fan! at 10 years old and I was ready to do what he wanted me to do and, that was the Inchworm song from the movie Hans Christian Anderson I knew it by heart so he pointed his attention completely to me also I was the only Dutch kid there that could speak English so I conducted my fellow inmates to sing the song by basically making it phonetic. kaye was a father of children I still feel his heartfelt hug when he left I kissed him on the cheek with power and he grabbed me hard in response I miss you, Daddy, Danny! I made a real friend those 2 days!
