This is the first in a series of videos featuring the Eurorack modules from Dannysound. I’ve been building these DIY kits one at the time over the past few months and now have the EN129 and Cali Osc oscillators, the Timbre wavefolder, the Multimode Ladder Filter, the MM VCA and the Looping VC-ADSR envelope, giving me a super-solid analogue core for my modular system.
In this video I’ll walk you through three patches focused on West Coast-style waveshaping and wavefolding in the Cali Osc and Timbre. These patches also make use of the other Dannysound modules mentioned above, as well as a selection of others including the Joranalogue Contour 1 and Filter 8, and the AI Synthesis LPG.
Next time I’ll take a deeper dive into the through-zero and logarithmic FM capabilities of the EN129, and I’ll explore some techniques for oscillator animation, from PWM and sawtooth modulation to audio-rate waveform switching. Stay tuned!
Chapters
00:00 Intro and preview
01:40 Overview of the modules
05:06 #1 Modulating wavefolder with an envelope
09:47 #2 Slow waveshaping and amplitude modulation
19:25 #3 Audio-rate waveshaping and low-pass gate
For in-depth, feature-by-feature guides to the individual Dannysound modules, I recommend the videos by Divkid ( / divkidvideo ) and Synth DIY Guy ( / synthdiyguy . The latter includes some build guides.
The kits are available from Thonk: www.thonk.co.uk/brand/dannyso...
Please note: this video is not sponsored by Thonk or Dannysound and I’m not affiliated with them; I’m just a fan of these modules!

This is utterly superb, and so usefully applicable to many modules. Thank you.

Thanks Tom. Really helpful, clear tutorials. These Dannysound modules seem like a great place to start for a West Coast system.

Cheers Alan! Yeah, if you enjoy the DIY thing they’re a great way to explore the West Coast side of things. We’re kind of spoilt for choice these days though with the new Tiptop Buchla stuff etc. I’ve really enjoyed trying things that are a bit different from the subtractive synths I’ve been playing with for 20-odd years. Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@TomChurchill Yes, I think this is the way I'd go if I was starting up today - despite my rudimentary soldering skills. The Tiptop Buchla are stiff competition though, at that price. My own West Coast journey began with Verbos Electronics, which can soon leave a big dent in the bank balance. ;-)

Tom another superb tutorial, love the Dannysound modules, first saw Ben Kiaty using the EN 129 to FM into Odessa VCO but alas I have not the eyesight or patience, skill to build kits so not cost effective to buy assembled even if available but awesome sounds , Green with envy In anticipation of your next episode cheers Martin👍🆒🎶🌟🌟

Cheers Martin, glad you enjoyed it! They do crop up on eBay/Reverb assembled occasionally, but as you say, you obviously do pay a bit of a premium for that. Hopefully some ideas you can use with other modules anyway!

Hi Tom Great video. I am fancying the Timbre… What case are you using?
@TomChurchill
@TomChurchill 2 года назад
Thanks James! The top case is a pair of Behringer 'Eurorack Rack' cases mounted in a 6U desktop rack enclosure from Nutshell Studio Furniture. Worth noting that the Timbre (and Filter) have three layers of PCB so they're a bit too deep to fit into a Palette or shallow skiff case - you'd need about 55mm I reckon. The Behringer racks are open-backed so depth isn't an issue if you stick them in a deep enclosure...

What do you mean by east coast and west coast synthesis? What is the difference and what does this mean?
@TomChurchill
@TomChurchill 2 года назад
In a nutshell, ‘east coast’ refers to the type of synthesis pioneered by Bob Moog in New York, which starts with harmonic-rich waveforms (saw, square etc) and uses a filter to remove frequencies. ‘West coast’ refers to the approach pioneered by Don Buchla in California, which starts with simple waveforms (sine, triangle) and adds harmonics using wavefolding, waveshaping, FM etc. Here’s a good article with a lot more detail: reverb.com/uk/news/the-basics-of-east-coast-and-west-coast-synthesis
