** TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW ** Here's the new analogue (or analog if not British) thru zero FM oscillator the 'EN129' from Dannysound. The module offers great, analogue, through zero frequency modulation with is musical and responsive offering for dynamic modulation without the wide ranging pitch drift in exp/log response analogue FM circuits. There is an additional LOG FM input and attenuator so you can exploit two flavours of FM and their responses. There's coarse and fine tune, LFO button to drop the range, sine, triangle, pulse, square and saw outputs. The pulse has PWM control and inputs and the saw has some rather unique onboard shaping too.

TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS
00:00 Welcome, hello, patch previews
01:15 Feature run down and walkthrough
02:36 The sound, the thru zero FM (an exploration of...) and the other waveforms and controls. There's a comparison of thru zero and log/exp FM, PWM, static and dynamic (modulated by an external VCA) frequency modulation and more.
06:52 The square and pulse waves ... the square sounds great (a little filter/delay sequenced patch). I then explore standard LFO modulation of PWM but also audio rate pulse modulation for a wide range of static and dynamic PWM overtones that gives us all sorts of phase distortion synth type tones imparting new and unique overtones compared to the standard analogue waves you'll be used to.
10:05 FM Interjection 1 ... a little thru zero sine on sine / sine on triangle FM interjection with no talking. A lovely little ear break :)
10:32 The saw wave output ... looking at wave shaping the saw with octave up like FX, tremolo style amplitude changes, adding voltages to add a square edge and set of harmonics to the saw and audio rate overtones for even further unique and new tones from otherwise simple waves.
14:08 A stereo generative patch making use of the pulse output and saw outputs with some FX and a pair of LPGs.
16:21 FM Interjection 2 ... thru zero sine on sine dynamic (envelope / VCA controlled modulation) FM for some quirky and classic FM tones.
16:34 Using the EN129 as an LFO. This offers some unique wave shape control using thru zero FM to control the LFO shape at various sub audio and audio rates. We create a new "diamond waveform" in this section too.
20:27 FM Interjection 3 ... tuneful yet warbly thru zero FM sequences with a little wonkiness as a palette cleanser before the final section on the video.
20:48 Creating a kick drum / percussion sound with the EN129 and using the thru zero FM to add noise based snare like overtones or FM like tones for added impact and creative tone control when synthesising your own drum sounds.

Great demo! I really like the way you did the FM Interjections; they showed up right as I wanted a quick, melodic break. And the kick patch sounded really fantastic. The only part I didn't like was the bit where I immediately went and ordered one for myself! :D

Really high quality oscillator. Really sharp, noise free and analytic waveforms out of it. Most of the triangles, sines and sawtooths I see on other oscillators, are very approximate and rounded. Sometimes sonically it doesn't matter, or actually helps, but it is nice to see an oscillator that is very pure and predictable in their shapes. The output isn't exactly -5V to +5V, there is slight positive bias, maybe -4.5V to +4.8V ?

Sounds amazing! Ok further into the clip...this thing sounds unlike anything and plan to add next to my A-110-4. Just brilliant...I also read that it is through hole...which adds to my personal opinion that non SMD stuff has a tone that I find above SMD stuff...I know it should not, but there you go.

Nice design and sounds great. The build looks like a “medium PITA”. Not a beginner build, but nothing like building an Easel. I haven’t looked into the calibration process. In the US, it’s around $250 for a full kit plus your build time. Compare with the $399 (and humongous) Rubicon II, which clearly has significant overlap with this module.

I've built a fair bit, but it wasn't hard at all. The calibration was easy too. You can do it with a stable voltage source and a rubbish computer oscilloscope. A couple of really good oscillators, these two.

While looking for a Thru Zero Oscillator I came across the Liivatera TZ VCO. It is in the same price range as this (comes assembled) and has some added CV + more FM and sync options, but I can´t find any good demos of it. Any experience with one?

DivKidVideo Yes that's the one at about 7:30. I went to a local hackspace to learn how to solder this week as I want to build one of these oscillators. It seemed to go pretty well. It's got a great sound and is a pretty cheap way into zero-through fm. It would be nice to play analogue fm sounds across the keyboard or sequence and get something musical. Do you really rate it over linear? How does it compare to the rubicon oscillator? I'm quite tempted by that and the dpo but the dpo doesn't do zero through.

@manne3d
@manne3d 5 лет назад
I'm glad i made you laugh Ben. :D Looks like a real nice and feature-rich VCO, as always the question...how good is the tracking? Wouldnt it be nice with some kind of a standard method for testing VCO's pitch-tracking (like the saw into a filter sweep with a few different resonance levels for the filter tests) I normally test a new VCO together with a stable source (like a sampler och DCO). Then i play both OSC's mixed together on midi keyboard, just going up the scale until the test VCO starts to drift from the reference too much and the beating kicks in. My good tracking VCO's track quite far (near dogwhistle territory :D), like the Dixie II and the Z3000mk2. But i guess it is a bit tricky coz if it is just a few cents off in the beginning it can have a big effect further up. I think we should have a number...like on the amplifiers signal to noise ratio, noise floor etc. Like at how many notes up does the tuning go before it goes out of a certain range (have to decide what amount of cents is reasonable value to use as max detuned) As it is now is guesswork even from manufacturers...like -"on a good day, in the sun you may get 5 octaves". Anyway, maybe this is to small ans niche to rant about this kinds of things, just some thoughts...laters.

@clusterchord1

all sounds great. i have one critique of the EN129 tho.. its sine wave does not sound like a pure sine wave at all. its full of harmonics, almost as if some of the triangle or square is bleeding in. on both demos (with instruo and with cali osc) ive compared to Doepfer 110-4, Stroh 258J and Endorphin FG and and they are much purer sines. in that order.
@GeorgeLocke
@GeorgeLocke 2 года назад
in fairness, the furthrrrr generator only does through-zero if you use a digital oscillator core, so that should be expected to be pure. I assume you're going from less to more pure there?
@clusterchord1
@clusterchord1 2 года назад
@@GeorgeLocke i commented on the quality of analog sine wave specifically i.e. not limiting that observation to thru zero products only. There are many analog osc that have purer sine than this, with or without tz capability, so this is not the expected norm. having a less than pure sine isnt the end of the world, but does affect the outcome in any fm context: regardless whether you choose expo, linear or linear tz. or phase modulation for that matter. PS the FG i mentioned is regular all analog version. the digital strong core tz is an option, which i don't like the sound of at all, to be honest.

Someone needs to put out a super simple, 4 or 6 hp, through-zero, Carrier-Operator sine VCO. Just v/o, a tuning knob, FM input, an FM attenuverter, and an output. Then you can just buy any number of them, chain them into each other with envelopes however you want, and have a patchable DX
@DivKid
@DivKid 3 года назад
Akemies Castle from ALM Busy Circuits and Humble Audios Quad Operator are fantastic patchable DX style FM units.
@JubileeGiggles
@JubileeGiggles 3 года назад
@@DivKid Totally, they both look awesome, especially excited about the quad's routing abilities and am seriously considering it. and definitely getting this EN129, probably 2. I would just love the flexibility of even smaller independent modules that could be used alone or together in any carrier/operator configuration. Am I also correct that both of those only have one v/o input for the whole unit? though I guess you're feeding external VCOs into them which you can tune however you want... I'm possibly seeing a deficiency where there isn't one. I'm pretty fresh to eurorack, somethimes I miss things when I'm trying to figure out the whole space/function/price equation
@DivKid

The Humble Audio Quad Operator can be used in a non ratio synced tuning mode for each of the 4 oscillators. That's then independent 4x v/oct.
