Hi Phil, this was such beautiful countryside with some lovely historic buildings. What a fascinating discovery. So much history in that tunnel. Thank you for sharing it with us ❤
Nice intro Phil! The whole video was lovely. We enjoyed seeing the beautiful fall foliage beginning. Our favorite time of year! Also enjoyed seeing the old tunnel. Great idea for you to try to film by drone. Nice the gentleman let you and it sure beats rappelling down! Enjoyed seeing it from the overlook! Thanks for bringing us along.
Thank you 🙏🏻 Phil. That’s another awesome footage. Drone footage super stunning with this gorgeous quality. Feel little bit jealous 😉. Have a nice day. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪.
Hi Phil, this video started off brilliantly and carried on right the way through. Such a shame you couldn’t get to the tunnel. But you did so well to follow it. The drone footage showed the tunnel so well. Absolutely enjoyed this video. Take care x Julie and Tony x
Hi Tony and Julie. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. It was disappointing not to get through to the tunnel, but as I was on my own, I didn’t want to chance it. Glad the drone footage helped a bit. 👍❤️
Hi Phil, sorry I've not been on RU-vid much at all lately because of this eye still on medication, Alf caught it again and gave it back to me and its sore to watch screens but this looked amazing. We would love to walk there, the tunnel liked amazing. Like the new channel name. Will catch you properly when I can 👍~ Anna
I found it interesting that the Queen and King would used the tunnel during WWII as a safe place to keep the train while visiting Wales. Still a bit of a mystery, since you couldn't get to the other end. Loved the drone footage and the countryside looks so lovely. I hope you are having a great week! 😊👍
Very historic tunnel. Interesting how the Royals choose the tunnel as a hide out for safety during the WWll.Lush green fields and ruins have wonderful views from above. Thanks for sharing dear friend
I know that area well, back in the day you could slip through the fence on drope road and walk up the cutting, which had quite steep sides. In school, the cross country team had to run up that cutting as part of a training run, about 2 foot of very cold water where the track used to be. The original track ran north under drope road to a junction, the main track then went over the big red sandstone viaduct that stood where the link road bridge now stands. There was another branch line that went through a cutting across the fields and joined the main Paddington to Swansea line just on the other side of St George's.
Thanks. That brought back some memories! I went to Glan Ely High school and we used to bunk off school and go through the tunnel which didn't have the entrances blocked off then. We went in the dark with no torches! the air ventilation shaft in the middle came out in the caravan park in Culverhouse. The entrance at the Drope end was easy to get to and not overgrown like it is now. Those were the days when kids went out and had silly adventures with no health and safety about.
@@kevinmorgan7091 Hi Kevin. Sadly I have to agree that kids don’t have the adventures our generation did. I’d have loved to have walked right through and saw the air shaft. I drove up the top and found the brick building they’ve now built over the exit of it. Again apparently that used to be more open than it is now. Sadly when the exit at the drive is, it’s become a bit of a dumping ground for some of the units. Thanks for watching 🙏
That was amazing to watch, shame you couldn’t get to the other end. But it’s an even bigger shame they don’t open it up as a path, rather than leaving over grown. Would make for a beautiful walk 😊 wonderful video
Hi Cara Thank you so much for watching and commenting and coming to the Premier also. I agree it is such a shame as the tunnel is completely intact, that they haven’t used it as a cycle path et cetera 🤷♂️
Hi Phil hope you're well, great video with some interesting information. It's a great shame that the old railway line has not been turned into a footpath and cycleway. I would have been tempted to find a way into the tunne Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen 😊
That was a great little explanation Phil just makes a walk so exciting finding this and that (the tunnel was impressive) shame it’s not used or developed as you say into a path ATB Simon
That was very interesting. I'm actually into and interested in this kind of stuff. We have a lot of old railways around where I live. A pity you couldn't find a way down to the second tunnel but the drone footage captured where the railway line used to go with the trees reclaiming the line. You'll know by looking at Google Maps satellite where the line was from that very thing. Great share 👍
Hi, Phil, Fantastic discovery. Have you known about this tunnel for a long time? How did you learn about it? Wow, gorgeous Fall foliage started in the UK!!! 3:47 Lovely, Love Autumn.. Oh, the mountains in a distance is covered with clouds. Doesn't it make you happy to find charming houses as you hike?? I don't know much about architecture in the countryside in the UK, but you pointed out such a graceful farmhouse probably historic. Well, I am glad to know you are in satisfactory. Impressive work. See you next one.
Hi MsKayak Thank you so much for watching and commenting and as usual your lovely observations. I first heard about the tunnel on a national TV programme that was discussing hidden history. This tunnel was one of those that was featured in the program some years ago. Since then it has been something I have wanted to find .👍😁
@PhilipOlsen11 yes it was pretty cool. You weren't far from the old station in part of your video. Our friends used to live there and the garden still had the old platform init.
@PhilipOlsen11 where you took the drone up over the house with the swimming pool it's opposite that. It used to be called station house. Not sure who lives there now though. You may also be interested to know the Woodham Bros used to live in Wenvoe, not sure if you know of them but used to be big in the locomotives around Barry docks.
Well that would be an amazing hiking / biking route Phil Such a shame that the Beeching cuts took out a whole load of our history. Fascinating exploration mate and loved the drone footage that you got showing the overgrown route. I wonder if they will ever clear it? Have a good week mate.
Hi Dave, hope you’re both well? I agree it is such a shame that it isn’t opened up as there is not much to impede it. Welsh water as you see in the photo has a mains pipe going through, but that shouldn’t be an issue, as it would be great to be opened up as a cycling path. 🤷♂️😊
Back during the first lockdown and the scorching hot weather I walked the whole length of the tunnel as the mud was completely solid! Wasn't the only one either as there were a few footprints apart from mine. The other end is indeed overgrown and inaccessible any other way but with the pipe work going on that might change.
Hi Daniel. Thanks for watching and commenting. I’m gutted I didn’t get ti walk through there but as I was in my own I thought it best. Wish like yourself I’d gone right through there as it looked amazing 👍
We Used to go there during lunch break when i was in glan ely high school in the mid 80s which was just across the link road. Was alway eerily cold inside there.Never had the courage to go more than a few feet inside
Great video i grew up on the Michaelston estate and the North portal was 5 minutes from my back door. I walked through many times in the 70s and early 80s. Sorry to be pedantic but the date stone is 1888 not 81. And the line went to Barry dock not Penarth. It was built by Dave Davies who built Barry dock to export his coal as he was fed up of paying Cardiff docks extortionate rate. Sadly he died before all this came to fruition.
Thank you so much for your comment and I really appreciate you watching. Not at all I don’t think you’re being pedantic. I’m glad you cleared it up. I went back there two weeks ago but couldn’t get as close this time because of works but will check out that date next time. Also thank you for the info regarding the route of the railway. I’ve walked quite a bit of it where it goes through Saint Fagans so I was hoping to film that at sometime. 👍
@@PhilipOlsen11 I will be catching up on your vids. I had a filming trip and a little bit behind, but will be dropping off comments on your work of art.
