Dark Souls 3 or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Game (Review...?) - Writing on Games

If you're a regular viewer of the show, stay tuned until the end for some announcements! Also, just a heads up - I go into the specifics of a mid-game boss battle from 8:30 - 12:38. It's not spoiler-y in nature or anything, and I only talk about mechanics as opposed to lore, but I know people are sensitive about that stuff.
So over the past couple of weeks, I've experienced some of the most intense emotional shifts a game has ever caused me. That game is Dark Souls 3, and it's a game I've fallen deeply in love with. That said, I believe this might be the worst game to play for the purposes of getting a review out that there could possibly be. I received code later than bigger sites and streamers, so only had six days before release to try and complete the game to meet my self-imposed deadline. This brought about unbelievable stress and even panic attacks - I worried I was going to fail as a critic for not completing the game.
This got me thinking though - the context of playing a game for review is almost entirely different from playing for entertainment, and the fundamental design of Dark Souls runs entirely contrary to the mindset one enters when playing for review and trying to finish a game so that one can write a piece and try and get it out as close to release date as possible.
It is this context that I want to focus on in this episode - if you're looking for a typical review then I'm sorry to disappoint, but rest assured this will definitely not be the last video I do on Dark Souls 3. I just thought it might be interesting to consider the fact that once I disregarded this self-imposed deadline that I not only became a better player, but a better critic - I was finally experiencing the game the way it was meant to experience. This caused me to question the reliability of other critiques of the game from bigger sites who did indeed pursue that embargo regardless of whether it meant rushing the game or not. With this in mind, how seriously can one take the earlier critiques of the game?
I'll also state that a lot of the footage in this video was taken from a current NG+ I'm going through, where I am playing with a late-game boss weapon which, fully upgraded and coupled with my ridiculous strength stat, has pretty much broken the game. It's utterly ridiculous how much damage that thing does, even to bosses, to the point where I would be taken aback if they didn't decide to patch it at some point. Just incase you were thinking 'this guy is a filthy casual' (which is true) or 'he doesn't seem to be having too many problems with this game'.

Yeah, the tension builds and you think to yourself: "this is it, I finally have this bastard this time", as you dodge through every smash, swing, and shockwave. Then... you die when the boss has 1 cm of health left. lolol.

Anyone played that new DLC? For me, there are some things I really like, some things I really hate. Looks like they're really banking on the PvP, which is not something I tend to focus on when playing DS (as much as I'm immensely glad it exists). Starts off feeling expansive and like you can get lost, but the fact there are bonfires EVERYWHERE (seriously, it's confusingly bad), combined with the fact you can warp in and out at any time, makes the whole thing feel prrrretty insubstantial. Was able to beat it in a couple of hours. What do you think?
@ikoyamamoto4217
@ikoyamamoto4217 7 лет назад
I found the dlc to be disappointingly short. Although from what I've heard, the big fight was supposedly incredibly difficult for most people, which depending on if you struggle with it or not could increase the time value of the dlc, as well as the overall enjoyment. That being said, I think the rest of the dlc is great. The world is stunning and immersive as i found myself moving slower than usual out of fear of some mutant fly throwing up on me or being overrun and mauled by legless crows. The weapons they introduced were all unique and neat, and the pvp arena is pretty cool too. But as a player who doesn't really get into the pvp, I also am a little disappointed. If you take out the pvp arena, its really only a 2 or so hour experience, which when compared to the other dlcs in the franchise just seems...lacking.
@navaato305
@navaato305 7 лет назад
Unfortunately I feel the same. I wrote a review for it on steam saying that I was super excited and loved what was in it, but there wasn't enough for souls fans and it left me feeling sort of bad afterwards. I feel like there were a few loose ends that weren't tied up or things i didn't understand. Although the enemies were cool and the bosses (the main one mostly) were solid I don't think it was necessarily worth a buy if you're not into PvP which I'm not.
@SeaToSkyImages
@SeaToSkyImages 7 лет назад
It was short, but I liked the area a lot. Probably the best area in the game actually. I'll mess around with the PvP arena a bit, but yeah, it's not a big deal to me. My internet connection in China is weird, so any PvP has the potential to be a giant lag-fest.

Writing on Games I actually really like the dlc, and I'm not a pvp guy at all. Im a challenge runner really, so the bosses are the most important part to me. I think the "big boss" of the dlc is a pretty stellar boss, and due to that being my focus, I think it's well worth my money. I'm trying to beat it at SL1, and it's been a lot of fun. I've beaten all the other bosses in the series at SL1(or BL4) and I've really enjoyed fighting that boss. Hoping to take her down tonight. But I realize that this isn't going to be everyone's opinion. I can see why people would be disappointed, but as for me, it would only have been disappointing if the bosses were not challenging.
@litcrit1624

The DLC is a tight little world, at the service of a simple little story: one loopy path to one boss. I guess that is the good and bad of it. Spatially -- as a narrative and experiential area -- it felt unified, with a couple surprises (the wandering soldiers, the knight who meets you coming down the stairs, the big wolf who suddenly peers down on you from above). But most of all, it felt like "one small thing," an easy and by the end fairly empty path to the finish. But perhaps worst of all, the finish didn't even feel like a finish. The boss dies and... you stand there. Was that it? Not talking here about length -- which was short -- but narrative purpose, as well as the feeling of having completed something. (I even, at the suggestion of a message, sat in the pose of the dragon before that alcove statuary, wondering if something would happen.) I played the Bloodborne DLC for scores of hours, replaying and co-oping those bosses again and again, just to see them. After 100%-ing this area, there's little I want to see again (except, maybe for Phase 2 of the final boss). I'm not saying it's bad; it just wasn't much. I wanted epic expansion; I got tidy postscript.

+Writing on Games This is literally exactly what happened to me...I'm almost done with the game and I've enjoyed almost none of it to be honest. Probably spent 10 hours on different profiles randomly restarting it becuase i act ocd and restart whenever I do too bad. I really need to relearn how to view video games as the journey to the destination, and not worry about rushing to the destination itself. 35 hours wasted! Lol.

In attempting to finish Sekiro before a review deadline myself, this video resonated with me pretty well. Although I did finish the main story before seeing this video, the stress felt in rushing to see the game’s credits absolutely detracted from my enjoyment of the experience, pushing me to multiple points in which I was focused entirely on completing the game rather than absorbing and noting my experience. Unfortunately, many deadlines do have to be met, but when possible, I do agree that going at one’s own pace is far preferable to achieving timeliness. Great video, and as relevant as ever!

The way you reacted to Sullivan reminds me a bit of the way I approached Gwyn. I knew that you could parry him but it wasn't my play style. I tried to beat him in the "badass way" and I fail so many times. Then I realized that it wasn't my way of playing the game. I played most of the game with light armor and high dex weapons. So I took out my trusty winged spear, my ninja attire and I proceeded to beating the Lord of cinder in a surprisingly swift way.

To my shame I must admit I have never managed to parry Gwyn, though after hearing how that makes the fight ridiculously easy and almost boring I guess thats a fortunate thing.
@jakeinator21
@jakeinator21 7 лет назад
Gwyn is super easy to parry. It makes the fight a joke but gosh dang does it make you feel powerful. The only attack I couldn't manage to get the parry timing right for was the first lunge he makes at the beginning of the fight. On my last playthrough of ds1 I decided I was going to dedicate myself to parrying that attack, but I gave up after like twelve attempts and just killed him. Pontiff is harder to parry but equally if not more rewarding to pull off.

You're main point reminded me of why I loved games so strongly. The cocktail of emotions that washes over you when you experience honestly true triumph that at the least at feels real and somehow unreal to you. The immense relief, disbelief & pleasure all at once as you try to take it all in after overcoming an obstacle is something I have long forgotten was even a thing. I think it is something crucial that non-gamers miss when trying to see why game-enthusiasts are so passionate about games. Thank you for putting that experience into words tho.

I must say. You deserve many more subscribers and I hope you keep this up for as long as possible. I nearly teared up while listening. It reminded me so much of the first time Dark Souls in general finally clicked with me. I believe I was fighting in No-Mans Wharf I'm DS2 when it finally happened. I kept dying over, and over making little progress in the area. I finally realized, every time I was dying I would get a little further, learn the enemies moves a bit more. Now, up until that point, I was wearing heavy armor, using large weapons and was fat rolling, but as I came to the realization I threw all of my heavy useless armor to the item box, grabbed a simple long sword and fashion souled myself a decent light armor set. After I had finally did that, I got through the area and beat the boss my first time going back through, it felt so invigorating, and it made me go back to Dark Souls 1 and try playing it again. I can now say for certain I am going to be a life long Dark Souls fan, and I am glad I pushed myself to play it. Thank you for making me remember my own experience.

What you've said about critiques reminds me a lot about criticisms levied towards journalism. There are many times where a critically short time frame can hinder the fundamental understanding of the subject matter. More importantly, it can remove what is truly important to the reader and the writer: perspective and insight about the subject matter. Thank you for bringing these views up, by the way. Your insight and perspective on these games are worth the time you put into them, and I'll be glad to keep listening. Consider me subscribed. :)

Hi Hamish! I watched all of your Dark Souls reviews and it's really refreshing to hear someone really look at these games and see them for what they are and the deliberate design, instead of the usual "these games are so hard!" spiel I hear from others. I figured you'd be the one to ask, but there's something I always felt in the first Dark Souls (that was absent in Dark Souls II), and I haven't played Dark Souls III yet, so I don't know if they continued this theme. But the Chosen Undead (one of many tbh) is just a human, as repeated by many of the NPCs, an heir to THE dark soul (I've always had a theory that humanity is a piece of the original dark soul) due to humans being the descendants of the briefly mentioned Furtive Pygmy. I've always found that interesting! The Furtive Pygmy is mentioned in passing, seemingly unimportant, and even said to be easily forgettable even in his own mythos, which reminds me of your take of how the first game communicates to players that we are not so important in the greater scope of the world of Dark Souls. We are forgettable, just interlopers, but still dangerous. This point drives home even more when you consider that the player character, a human, is smaller than most other NPCs and enemies in the game, but we still interrupt or disrupt rituals that have been going on for ages before we ever got there. The only other time I've seen this theme emulated was back in Demon's Souls, where there is a transition with the player being just another doomed hero trapped in the Nexus to actually becoming a dangerous element (the Maiden Astraea fight illustrates this), Does Dark Souls III continue this theme?

This is why I really hate, when people shit on game reviewes, and say stuff like "you just play games and get payed for it". Do they realize that the reviewer has like, a week to review each game? And when some Dark Sould 3, or Fallout 4 comes out, that they need to COMPLETE the game in this week? That means skipping out on tons of things, rushin through the game, maybe ruining the enjoyment for yourself, and then write a coherent review about it! And in the end they don't even have time to play games they like, or games they skipped.

Wicked Minish And it's also understandable why everyone who plays and beats the game (usually a week to beat it blind effortlessly complete with optional areas.) hates it. No replay value, forced to replay it twice. PVP sucks, from making it worse in the DLC. It's horrible.
@Athalwolf13

*blinks* People hate Dark Souls 3? PVP sucks? DLC makes it worse? Oh sure, the PVP has problems (it always did, honestly, Dark Souls always had some game breaking things ) , POise is a point of contention for MANY people (although i suppose they wanted to avoid the strategy of people taking a greatsword and swinging it around giantdad style ) , i don't see a reason why you have to replay it twice, it does have replay value (harder game (some like it ) , better rings , more upgrade stones / titanite slabs for equipment upgrades, boss weapons and 3 endings )
@trutyatces8699
@trutyatces8699 7 лет назад
+Black Wolf 1- the lack of poise is what buggers the PVP 2-With the new hyper armor, EVERY HEAVY WEAPON DOES THAT! (It took actual skills to use them in the last dark souls game unlike this one) 3- In the last dark souls game, YOU COULD FARM TITANITE SLABS!!! what were you on about?
@trutyatces8699

You know, Pontiff never gave me trouble. When I found out that he was a roadblock I was surprised, and even felt good for having such an easy time with him. But then Champion Gundyr crushed my happiness and I did something I done only once before; I didn't defeated him. So he and Orphan of Kos are the only two bosses of the series I couldn't defeat. Such a good video. That fight was the best souls fight. As well as the Dragon Peak final boss to avoid spoliers. The tense moments and absolute sheer amount of times that It seems like bosses are actually players, timing attacks and chasing you whilst you're trying to heal was absolutely scary. This game is absolutely my favorite Souls game yet. It blends all aspects of all From Soft games into a masterpiece. The graphics, fluidity of movement and combat. And don't get me started on the references, they are all so well put and placed. Especially the Final Boss. Undoubtedly he was where I struggled. I sought to just end the game like you tried in your video. And then that same revelation came to me, and after a few more times I came to beat him. Undoubtedly the best moment of the game. Looking forward to more videos on DS3. Long may the sun shine my friend.

Thanks so much for watching man. Yeah, the references and how the game handles nostalgia is something I want to analyse at some point - had the potential to be really hokey and out of place, but instead just solidified and fleshed out things like relationships between characters really effectively.

Had a similar situation with my 9 year old yesterday. He is working through the OctoExpansion in Splatoon 2, which is challenging DLC. He was 1 sec away from finishing a mission and failed which led him to begin to cry. I told him to turn it off, breathe and take a moment to compose his frustration. After he calmed back down he beat it the very next attempt.

A fine essay my friend. I'm glad that you realized and hope you can continue to "take your time" in your future pieces. In the end, youtubers like yourself have the liberty to do so. Keep up the good work! Btw, for some reason, some of the footage you have on here has freezes frames every half a second and became a bit nauseating after a while.

Thank you so much for your kind words and your support on the Patreon! it means the absolute world to me, seriously. As for the choppiness of the footage, I can only apologise - I'm still getting used to the whole capturing footage thing, and I think I need to upgrade my CPU soon anyway. Thanks for bearing with me as I figure this stuff out!

Pontiff Sullivan also was the hardest boss I faced in my playthrough, but it's not like you said, you don't have to have top notch reflexes, I just had to change my playstile from roling and attacking to circling with shield up. Playstyle changes are huge and hard to do, but I think it's far that you can't defeat all the bosses with the same mentality, so I appreciated it and even learned to parry, although just used it in this boss.

Hamish, I'm really grateful that you've made these videos. They've help me see Dark souls in a new light, in which I became more focussed on learning, rather than winning the game. I also suffer from depression, and really want life to end on some days; wondering what is the point of going on, or how my time would end (homelessness, suicide, mega depression). But in my more strong moments, I come back to Dark Souls and the lessons that you showed me the game was trying to teach me. I refer specifically to your Dark Souls and "suicidal depression" video. I could see myself in your position, and felt some sense of companionship. I honestly thought it was a shit game when I first started playing (probably cause I was getting my destroyed by everything, but also cause of the obscure story), but today reminded me the high of beating a boss after so many failures. This reminds me I can also take this same formula with life and treat it as a video game(haha). But that's not to say I won't relapse occasionally into the dark, which I know I can't avoid, but only work on (much like death in Dark Souls). And I hope others here, either with mental illness or not, can apply to the seemingly impossible (although some things probably are impossible). Anyhow, thank you for your intelligent, well spoken opinions. I love hearing from you and wouldn't mind further mental health videos in future (since they are close to my heart and my faulty nervous system). I'll be sure to help support your patreon, as a sign of my gratefulness and my attempts to be a more generous human being. Hope your depression fades out, and you live good happy life. Don't go suicide because that would make me sad (even though I don't even know you). Peace

I'm glad I saw this. I've kind of been racing through DkS3 to get it done before Ratchet and Clank comes out, and, as you say, that's not a particularly smart or pleasant experience. I think this demonstrates why accepting review copies is something that needs careful consideration. Obviously it's hugely tempting, especially if you've been wanting to play the game for months, but feeling like you have some sort of obligation is going to colour your experience (*not* feeling like you have an obligation will also colour your experience, but hopefully in a more positive way. And around and around we go)

I was SOOOOOOOOO lucky with the Pontiff Fight apparently because in my first play through of the game, I beat him in one try by somehow or another beating him down in a corner with Black Hand Gotthard. I had no idea it was such a tough fight until I watched some videos about the game, and truly realized it the second time I tried the boss in my next playthrough, probably the toughest fight for me was either the Dancer or the Abyss Watchers. I must have died at least thirty times each for them.

The reason you were struggling with Pontiff Sulyvahn was because you missed two or three undead bone shards and your estus was very underpowered.

hi :) watching that video was awesome, and i would love to read game reviews in future where the author took his/her time to experience the game. I think that would be very valuable to have and would be a big contrast to other game reviews. I personally always wait a few month and then read some reviews from users with a lot hours since i think those guys have a more profound story to tell, then Graphix 6.4, Story 5.6 and Sound 4. Take ur time :)

100 hours (with dlc) is usually the cut off I go with for the initial judgement for these games. I love the venting and how you mentioned changing your approach towards the death mechanic. Sulyvahn is a great choice for a first git gud boss imo. Practically my favorite boss. I didn't like the ability to parry him and didn't love the second phase choice, though. It feels like he could be a Nameless King type of optional boss (and he could've been harder and more developed if that were the case.), but putting it in the middle of the main game makes lots of sense. I want to be critical due to it being an overtly beautiful boss and having great potential.

Had a really similar experience with the game, probably because I haven't played bloodbourne either. Got wrecked by the Pontiff, summoned someone and they died pretty quick but something clicked, I focused put my sheild away and got him down to one hit before dying. Went back unembered, killed him and hardly got hit. What a feeling :-)

This personal anecdote about the game is not insubstantial... It's very personal. You learned to immerse yourself in the game, leaving aside the weight of your game-external personal agenda, thus lending yourself to discovering the secrets of the game and reveling in learning a lesson drawn from a designing element of the game. So it is that you were finally free to critique the game in a more fulfilling way, thus unearthing a wondrous gem I had not seen myself from other content-makers. I want this game so badly now, because I want games that leave you reflecting on oneself and his helping me become, in real life, a better person for it in the end.

I can totally relate to this! Instead of reviewing it, it was live streaming. I kept trying to speed through Souls games to make quick progress so I wouldn't bore my viewers. Things began to change when I decided to attempt Bloodborne for a third time (which I have never beaten) without streaming and play the game at a pace that works for me. Because of that, I began to enjoy Bloodborne way more than when I originally started. I'm the farthest I've ever been in that game. It's encouraged me to go back to the Souls games I've abandoned when I finish Bloodborne.

I never really struggled on a boss in any Souls game, but damn, Pontiff is definitely in the top 10 hardest imo. His range, speed, and damage was just devastating to mess up to, and I remember being severely underpowered for the area, so an ember was required to even have a chance. I didn't want to use a single summon in this game, because I feel I can improve more as a player if I beat a boss alone, and since I made that decision in Bloodborne, I've gotten a lot better. Anyways, I remember finishing Pontiff's whole first phase using only one estus, and when he got his wings I popped an ember for phase 2. Pontiff will be one of my most favorite bosses from DS3, because of how difficult and tense his boss fight is.

Coincidentally, the way I beat Pontiff is maybe the most "Dark Soulsy" of any of the bosses. He's the only boss that I use a shield on at this point. You just hold up a decent shield and then strafe around him to the left. Attack him when it seems safe; rinse and repeat. That doesn't work as well in the second phase, but I'd argue the second phase is easier than the first (at least without my strategy). This is coming from someone who only played Bloodborne prior to DS3. While they share many similarities, I still believe they feel very different in terms of gameplay. I wonder how many reviewers co-oped through most of the game. I'm pretty sure that functionality worked for them, and it really seems like a lot of game reviewers aren't great at video games, so I can see them falling back on easy mode. It definitely makes beating the game quicker. Co-op can be very fun, but I don't really think you've "played" or "beaten" these games if you can't finish them solo.

Pontiff Sulyvahn was a nightmare. I had to use a guide to find out that there are actually two summons outside of the boss fight. I just let them do most of the work.

I know you haven't played Bloodborne, but the Pontiff Sulyvahn boss fight, at least for me, was like fighting two Martyr Logarius in one. He doesn't clone himself, but instead he likes to the throw magic skulls at you, not to mention he likes to slam his magic sword down on the roof so it can clone itself and these clones basically track and hit you. Martyr's moves, though he was floating more, was eerily familiar to the Pontiff. Nevertheless, Bloodborne is another masterpiece you ought to try.

Came here from your dark souls 2 video, totally understand why the comments are disabled, most ppl on RU-vid are cancer. Just wanted to give you a few critiques about the video, but you can definitely ignore my comment if you feel like you've recieved enough hate on a 3 year old video. Regardless, I appreciate when someone takes the time to put out a video about something they feel passionate about. The main critique of DS2 was that the combat was unfairly harsh as oppposed to the other DS games (that was probably 12 minutes of the video). I'm going to say that's a matter of opinion, but being my first Dark Souls game I had little trouble picking up the Dark Souls style and the game didn't feel any more difficult or less telegraphed than any of the others. I'm not going to go into the specifics of your video's points, in my mind this applies to everything you covered. I'm going to guess that most of your opinions on the game sprouted from a pre-established feeling for the game, (maybe from what you had read in reviews that expressed similar opinions) because most of your critiques just don't hold up, or exaggerate what could be a fair point. You said that DS2 doesn't handle its narrative well, compared to DS1 whose narrative about depression was done well. Narrative is definitely subjective, and taking the idea of being "cursed" as a one to one representation of depression, I think is mislead, and is probably a big part of why you dislike the game so much. Lastly, your video was 18 minutes when it probably could've been 8, I think it needed to trim the fat a bit. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to discuss your passion about a game, I always like hearing others' opinions, and yours is just as valid as mine regardless of what anybody says.

I think your argument applies on most critics today. They are so worried for watching/playing so much content and letting their review out ratter than analyze and really get into the content. Movie critics for example getting a movie review a week before the release. And then a much better video when the bluray/dvd is out and they have had time for analyzing in depht the content

Damn, I felt so badass when I killed Pontiff on my third attempt, solo. I try to not use summons at all on my first playthrough (though I put my own sign down a lot) and I was worried this boss would break me, because I died almost INSTANTLY the first two times I went in. But when I went in again I was just like...in the zone. Still had to use a lot of estus but when he went down I felt proud in a way I don't think I have since...the first time killing Ornstein and Smough maybe?
