Dark Souls Lore - Dark Sun Gwyndolin, Darkmoon Master
Been a while since I made any Dark Souls lore videos, but this felt like a good time to touch on this particular character! Note: I actually made this a long time ago but never finished and uploaded it until now, because of Elden Ring and other things happening! But next lore video will be back to Elden Ring... with another moon-character!

I’m pretty sure when Yorshka is performing the ritual to make you a Blade of the Darkmoon she is saying the rite that Gwyndolin would normally say. She isn’t saying that her father is Gwyn and sister is Gwynevere she is saying the speech that Gwyndolin would say if he was making you a Blade of the Darkmoon.

Setting aside it seems other responses here didn’t entirely understand what you were getting at: agreed! I think considering the themes of the series, Gwyndolin’s death is maybe the closest we get to seeing some kind of “justice” done to an actual character in the drama. Gwyndolin is probably the most compelling character in the series. The last born, the last survivor of the gods, clinging to his father’s kingdom for who knows how many generations, stanning a hallowed past he might even have been born too late to really see, tricking countless “chosen” ones into helping him maintain his power. And you can tell that he doesn’t even like humans. He thinks so little of them that he makes an illusion of a princess to flatter their egos in order to get what he wants out of them. The tragedy of him having to steadily rely on and interact with them more and more despite this, until one day a few of them realize he’s given them too much leverage and they use it to destroy him is just beautiful. For a series that is fundamentally *about* the ways that power corrupts us, and the dangers of clinging to a system that has stagnated and is hurting more than it helps, it’s just such a perfect moment to see the chief proponent of this broken system be devoured by a monster of his own making, literally puppeted the way he’s done to so many of us. It’s fantastic.

I dont think a video game has caused that level of horror in me before I saw Aldrich and it *all* sunk in, sulyvahn, everything. I died the first time cuz I was too busy going holy fuk wtf! to concentrate. Best part of the game imho. Id like to imagine somehow someway the ashen one managed to save Gwyndolin from Aldrich. Wooo! I missed your vids. Here's some thoughts on Gwyndolin and the Darkmoon; The word half-rhymes with dwindling and Kindling, apt to his role in the fire-linking prophecy. Darkmoon is a inversion of the word Sunlight: SunLight -> MoonDark -> DarkMoon The role of Darkmoon is implied to have been formerly held by Velka, as can be inferred from the statues in Oolacile, Irithyll and the Ringed City, as well as the illustration of Gwyn and the Darkmoon Goddess on each Miracle. The Darkmoon Tomb is used by the Sable Church of Velka to stage the wedding of the True Monarch, the final ritual to legitimise the usurper. The Darkmoon Knightess uses the same fighting style as the Pardoner - thrusting sword, talisman, parrying dagger. Gwyndolin and the Pardoner both T-pose (reference to Crucifixion, also seen in the Painted World and Farron). "Roster of Knights" states "Elite Knights" were allied to the Darkmoon. The Blue Sentinels of Lindelt were a recreation-in-spirit of the Darkmoon Knights (we receive the Way of Blue banner from Emma, a former Lindelt Firekeeper, and the Blue Sentinels banner from Anri's Horace). The knights of Mirrah (Lindelt) in Eleum Loyce also wear the Elite set.

Gwyndolin survives ds1 in his normal state. He then recruits Gods to Anor London is Ds3. What happens is that he becomes gravelly ill during DS3, and Pontiff seizes control of Anoe London from him and imprisons here in the Gwynevere room. He went down for some reason and then Aldrich starts eating him as he arrived at that moment. Note: there is a Canon. The flame endings are canon in DS1 and DS2 while the Age of Fire is over is the canon of DS3 (letting the fire die but not usurping it)

@SilverMont

Perhaps being attuned to the sun is just the "standard" so to speak, so nobody really thinks too much on it. Gwyn's the lord of sunlight, so all his children being sunlight-attuned is whatever. But then one is born more attuned to the moon, so that's noteworthy?

I believe Gwyndolin is Gwyn and Priscilla's son (well known theory, I won't expand on it here). That's perfectly possible even considering the existence of Yorshka herself. In DS3's DLC, we find Priscilla's boss arena in an area behind a fake wall. There, we are invaded by Livid Pyromancer Dunnel and also we find the pyromancer's parting flame, which description states: "When Dunnel lost his hideous spouse, he gave his own pyromancy flame as an offering, which transformed into a parting flame". Everyone surely remembers Priscilla is referred to as "an abomination" since DS1. So, finding an offering for a "hideous spouse" in Priscilla's place in DS3, basically tells us that she was the one who Dunnel made an offering to, also implying that she was his spouse and that she's dead by this point. That way, Yorshka (and probably the Painting woman too) are both daughters of Priscilla (crossbreed) and Dunnel (human), which would explain why they both got more human features. And also, in that case Gwyndolin could perfectly be Gwyn's last born, while still being Yorshka's older brother. In that case, that would be: - Gwyndolin is the son of Gwyn and Priscilla - Yorshka is the daugher of Priscilla and pyromancer Dunnel.
@girl1213
@girl1213 22 дня назад
Yorshka doesn't have to be Gwyn's blood to be Gwyndolin's sister. There's nothing about who Gwyn partnered with to have his children after all. Many believe there was more than one woman who gave Gwyn children. They just tended to take more from their father because he was a carrier of a Lord Soul. Gwyndolin is obviously an odd one out though since emphasis is on how not alike he is to his father. So I can get by the idea he and Yorshka are maternal half-siblings.

I always wondered if Throne Watcher was related to Gwyndolin in some way... The way of white and dark moon are closely tied together. One representing the Shield and Sword of the Throne. Throne Defender is ancient perhaps older than Vendrick. Perhaps the Throne of Want was overseered by agents of Caitha, even Velstdt was a way of white paladin akin to the likes of Garl Vinland . I always wondered where all these gods are chilling? Hiede was known as a Garden of the Gods. I wouldnt be surprised if they had a few gardens around the earth. With one central holy point. The ancient city Shulva seems to have had a connection to Caitha... just look at all the statues... Yet this holy place was abandomed by the way of white. My only question is how and why The way of white governed Lordran was usurped by Caitha, migrated to Drangleic(perhaps demon kind took over lordran before the kin of the gods returned to reclaim their holy land and established Lothric.) Even after all these years so many questions just have hard to find answers.

There is a mistranslation in Sulyvahns lore, he didn’t actually hand over Gwyndolin to Aldrich, he forced to. It would explain why all his soldiers are consumed by insects and why he had his beasts kill Aldrich’s covenant leader. Considering Aldrich wanted to get rid of the fire that would go against sulyvahns profanned flame. It’s most likely that Sulyvahn did truly believe in Gwyndolin until the profaned flame twisted his want to help continue Gwyndolins age of fire. So he trapped him and wanted Aldrich another member of the way of white to help bring it about, but he instead betrayed him. It would explain why Sulyvahn is gripping his swords in torn clothes most likely angry beyond belief he had to give up the god he was now using to stay in power.

It's possible that Gwyndolin is Gwyn's son by Priscilla, and that Yorshka is also Priscilla's daughter, either by another father or by Gwyn but kept a secret. Priscilla would be Seath's daughter by Velka because Velka's darkness affinity, along with that inherent to her female nature, would have been desirable to Seath to create scales of immortality, since it is through those elements that reproduction occurs (the child is formed in the darkness of the womb, and this is due to the Dark Soul's ability to grow and be split and reproduce - it is reasonable to believe that Velka's Lord Soul possessed some darkness, albeit not as pitch black as the dark soul). We certainly know that Priscilla has some small scales, lending some credence to this idea. I have heard it theorised that Velka and Fina are in fact two aspects of the same person: one name for her beauty and loving kindness, and another for her ladyship over sin and punishment and forgiveness. The whole idea of The Dark Sun is to create a fusion of opposite affinities: darkness and light, moon and sun, dragon and god, intelligence and faith. Such a pinnacle of creation would be able to maintain the Age of Fire in perpetuity and be truly immortal, but unfortunately this seems to have not gone to plan seeing both his frail stature and his serpent feet. I guess we'll never know all the details though, since no new information will ever come out about this.

Gwyndolin is a perfect dragon/human crossbreed hermaphrodite (Alchemically "Rebis") created by Seath the Alchemist from his piece of the lordsoul given to him by Gwyn after he betrayed his own kind (Priscilla was a too feminine creation, thus she was banished and locked away in a painting). Gwyndolin was created in an act of rebellion after realising that he (Seath) commited a grave mistake and in a selfish self-centred pursuit of immortality caused the downfall and almost extinction of his whole race. Seath and Gwyndolins plan was to slowly erode and finally usurp Gwyns legacy and dynasty, altering the undead curse to their benefit, we see the fruits of this in the Usurp fire ending in DS3. Basically any mention of Velka/Gwyndolin in DS1 is psyop info, used to insert themselves into the firelink prophecy. Miyazaki is a sociology student, recognising and distinguishing propaganda is a key trait in almost all his works.

I always thought that Gwyndolin and Velka worked in tandem. When I was a teen playing through 3 I developed a theory that Gwyndolin had talked to Priscilla in the painting, learned more about her and found her company better than the eternal loneliness of that tomb. Eventually siring Yorshka and Aria (painter girl in painting) but not being able to get Priscilla or Aria out in time for the joint assault of Sullivan, Aldritch and Friede. everyone believe pris is seath's daughter, but I believe gwyndolin is the son of seath and gwyn's wife (probably velka) Pale skin Moon affinity Snake feet (snake = imperfect dragon) Same song as moonlight butterfly (seath's creation) Seath is obsessed with immortality, there are plenty form of immortality, one is having a genetic heir. He wants to breed. Hence he kidnapped plenty of women. But they didn't survive the transformation. so he insert his crystal halber to Gwyn's wife. Gwyndolin was born, Gwyn didn't suspect, then seath did it again, pris was born. Gwyn having none of it banish Pris and velka to the painting, and hide gwyndolin Eons passed, pris grew older and more draconic, she forgot her own name and got out of the painting, gwyndolin found her and named her yorshka (this is confirmed in dark moon ring DS3). Together they lead the dark moon Blade until sully came.
@GeneralTaco155555a
@GeneralTaco155555a 2 года назад
I don't buy that Gwyndolin is Seathe's offspring. Seathe isn't associated with snakes at all, Gwyndolin uses miracles even if they do resemble sorcery, and I highly doubt that Gwyn would lock Priscilla in the painting and just overlook Gwyndolin. Perhaps he was just close to Seathe/wanted to emulate him? Or maybe he was emulating Priscilla/Yorshka? Just theorizing here, I think this second option makes the most sense. Maybe Gwyndolin knew about his half sister and/or felt a strong connection to her and his entire appearance and femininity comes from her? That would also explain why he cares for Yorshka so much later on. Yorshka being Priscilla is interesting, and very plausible, with the difference in appearance possibly being either an illusion or maybe the difference between the real world and the dream-like world of the painting. The item you're referring to though is Yorshka's Chime, not the Darkmoon ring.

@GeneralTaco155555a
@GeneralTaco155555a 2 года назад
@@Archontasil serpents have no association with crossbreeds. Yes serpents are imperfect dragons, but literally anything can be described as an imperfect dragon except a perfect dragon. Priscilla is a perfect dragon crossbreed and as such she is furry and has a tail like the real dragons. Yorshka is also a perfect crossbreed, but she resembles the imperfections of Seath: she's frail, has tendrils, and tail is more crystalline than furry. Lothric isn't a crossbreed, he's just cursed. Possibly undead. Oceiros is NOT a crossbreed, he's a king who became obsessed with Seath and twisted his form to resemble a dragon. Wretches and Piscana are failed attempts at crossbreeds/hybrids and they are all sick, gnarled, and similar pale grey or blueish purple like Oceiros. Gwyndolin has a ton of individual snakes, if it was just that he's part dragon or serpent, then he would just have a serpent lower half. It has to be something else.
@Archontasil
@Archontasil 2 года назад
@@GeneralTaco155555a wrong, ds1 specifically said snakes are imperfect dragon, not humans, not gods, not rats, not dogs. Just snakes. oceiros is obsessed of becoming a dragon he genetically experimented on himself and his children to be dragons. He even refers his baby as "Ocelotte, child of dragons". And ocelotte is invisible like Pris. Lothric lorian is paleskinned and have long limbs like other half breeds (of course this is speculation) but the only confirmed male half dragon is oceiros and he's not healthy at all. (ocelotte might be female due to her -ette suffix) Oceiros and probably lothric lorian might not be a descendant of dragon, but they definitely have dragon bloods in them, and they are all sick. @@Archontasil Not wrong. "The serpent is an imperfect dragon and symbol of the Undead" "ring depicting a snake that could have been, but never was, a dragon." Serpents are NOT dragons, or half dragon, or dragons that are kind of messed up: they are their own things. Snakes are imperfect dragons in that they kind of look like dragons, but aren't. Your logic is like saying monkeys are imperfect humans, and then saying something that looks like a monkey must be a half-breed of a human. That doesn't make any sense. AGAIN, Oceiros is *NOT* half dragon. He's a god/king who was so obsessed with Seath that he twisted his body and soul into resembling a dragon. Basically plastic surgery to made him look all fucked up, and then he just calls himself a dragon. You're also just taking him calling Ocelotte the "child of dragons" at face value when he's LITERALLY DESCRIBED AS INSANE. ("Oceiros went mad trying to harness his royal blood for a greater purpose") He's *NOT* a dragon, he just thinks he is because he's crazy and obsessed with Seath. Ocelotte is also NOT invisible, they are cut content. This is extremely well known, and its texture files as well as audio files for both Oceiros and Ocelotte are still in the game. Ocelotte is a little undead/corpse looking baby, and Oceiros crushes it in the second phase, but they cut it probably because depicting baby murder isn't allowed in many countries/would give the game an AO rating. The only other mention of Ocelotte in the entire game is Divine Blessing: "The Queen of Lothric, married to the former King Oceiros [.....] after giving birth to Ocelotte, her youngest, she quietly disappeared." This could be a lore explanation for why Ocelotte was cut: the Queen took Ocelotte and ran away, knowing the King would try to experiment on it, and could easily be tricked since he was insane and blind. Either way, Ocelotte lore is impossible to pin down exactly due to the messy late stage cut, but saying definitively that Ocelotte is invisible because of dragon heritage is just straight up false. Saying Lothric is a half breed is WILDLY speculative, if not blatantly contradicted by in-game evidence. There is literally 0 support for this theory besides him being frail and white; also, NONE of the other halfbreeds and failed experiments are disabled like that. Also also, his twin brother Lorian was not afflicted by the same frailty or disability at all in the past, he just took on his brother's curse to help him out ("Before Lorian embraced his brother's curse, he was a knight" "Lorian, raised as a knight, is said to have been left mute and crippled by his younger brother's curse. It is also said that Lorian, in fact, wished it so") There are multiple item descriptions that mention Lothric's being cursed, as well as his armor set being specifically resistant to curse, and yet nothing about dragons whatsoever. Dragons and "curse" are completely unrelated things, nothing draconic is ever described as being "a curse". Curses are a very specific thing, and often related to humanity and the undead. If he had any relation to dragons, the game would mention them in some way, but it doesn't at all. The pygmy lords are all pale, have white hair, frail, disabled, dress in black robes, and are cursed with undeath... why jump immediately to dragons, when this relation is way closer? I'm not saying this is a correct parallel to make, but it's 10x more supported by evidence than a relation to dragons.

I feel like Gwyndolin chooses to embrace their innate femininity while also accepting the masculine aspects aswell calling himself a "he" or "brother" Gwyndolin was born "small and frail" meaning feminine looking and even appears to act in a feminine manner, Maybe Gwyn or whomever raised them was supportive and thats why they were raised as a daughter. Perhaps I'm just projecting though. I myself am a man who was born and to this day looking very feminine to the point where people automatically asume I'm female. People usually don't believe me when I say I'm a guy. I'm gay and look like a girl but still identify as a man which I think is the case for Gwyndolin. I don't thin, Gwyndolin discarded the reverseal ring because they no longer wanted to be feminine, mainly because of their appearance and clothing still being extremely feminine while being eaten by Aldrich. As far as we know Gwyndolin never Married or had children. I *THINK* Gwyndolin likes being a femboy. As for them not using Miracles they do cast that Miracle that relocates them, the glyphs are clearly Miracle based. The Darkmoon Blade is also a Miracle created by Gwyndolin for their followers. Gwyndolin's picture is on every Miracle scroll standing just behind Gwyn if you look closely. Which leads me to believe that Gwyn did infact raise Gwyndolin. I have to say that because there are theories that Gwyn linked the fire right before or after Gwyndolin's birth and thus he was raised by Gwynavere or Velka. Gwyndolin is both male and female, Light and Dark, and depending on who you ask both Good and Evil, being very broodyband cold but also warm and soft. Which makes sense why Gwyndolin was the head God after Gwyn left because its an era of Twilight neither an Age of Light or Dark. I also believe Yorshka is his biological sister, they are both pale, frail, light haired, and have serpent/dragon aspects and we know that Gwyn lied or atleast the general knowledge about his children was untrue. Filianore is also said to be Gwyns Daughter that he gavevto Humanity. like Zeus Gwyn has many bastard children some of which we probably don't know about. Just because Gwyn went to war with the Dragons doesn't mean he hated all of them, Seath and Midir being prime examples I think Gwyn just wanted to be in charge, because why wouldn't he, he's the most powerful being of his age why shouldn't he be the Ruler of all?
