Darth Maul deleted scenes are TERRIFYING

How it makes sense is going to be something about movie production, like they had a film that was too long and had too much going on so they had to cut it down and reduce screen time for characters that weren't absolutely essential. Darth Maul is the "muscle" in this film and he dies at the end, so that's a natural choice when it comes to cutting lines. "acts all quiet, cool and cocky" What? That's not even how "cocky" works! Cocky would be more lines, like insulting the Jedi about how all they're all cowards and he'll take them both on at once and they don't understand the real way to use the Force. He'd be saying how disappointed he is that these weaklings are the best fight the pathetic Jedi order can put up. That's how you do cocky. Constantly running his mouth and showboating. You ever see Rocky? Look how Apollo Creed acts. That's a cocky character. Or just Muhammad Ali in real life. "Getting chopped in half, living years in rage and insanity" I know this is canon, but before somebody calls me on it, I just want to address that in TPM, in the context of just that one movie, Darth Maul clearly dies by being cut in half, and it happens on screen. And then thrown down a giant pit. Inside a power generation facility. I know canonically they brought him back as a spider cyborg or some crap, and that's...fine...but in this movie, taken on its own without any of the other media that came out after it, the "muscle" bad guy gets killed after killing the "mentor" good guy.

I loved his exchange with Obi-Wan on Tattooine. I don't think any villain has started so low in my interest, and climbed to a tragic legend. Vader was always cool, but looking at it objectively, his redemption was guaranteed by plot. Maul, on the other hand, went from cardboard to wrath incarnate, to a savage wild animal, up to a savvy crime lord, and finally to an exhausted lost soul who always had to find... KENOBI!!!

Exar Kun is the original weirder of a double-bladed lightsaber.

@@YoshiCookie Yep, came here to say the same thing. Maul may have been the first to use it in live-action, but Kun actually INVENTED it in the comics nearly 4000 years before Maul, and even in real life that comic came out years before The Phantom Menace was made.

Yep. Of all the new characters introduced in the prequels, Darth Maul is still my favorite. He just looks dangerous.

To be fair, him being mute would have been amazing. I love his depiction in Clone Wars but I sometimes wonder if it wouldn't be cooler if he were more quiet, at least not always talking lol.

Yeah, but that was all part of his growth as a character. Losing your legs, being left to die, dumped in a junkyard, and left to fend for yourself for 10+ years in that kind of environment will change anyone. His more vocal personality later on developed alongside his madness. And even though I'd say half of that madness was soon "Forced" out of his mind, he clearly was still never quite sane after that, or silent. But in The Phantom Menace, he wasn't there to give orders or keep his allies in line, he was there to track and capture the Queen, and kill the Jedi. He didn't have to say anything then. In the Clone Wars he was forced to work with allies, and Maul needed them to answer to him - not someone above him.

Yeah, although I'm glad we got Dooku and Grievous as well. The more the merrier. I remember thinking Dooku would last until at least the latter half of Episode 3, and look where that went.

Excellent point, and I agree completely...that would truly have gotten a collective gasp from audiences. On a side note, I hated how you could derive the entire plot to all 3 prequels from the trailers...that's one thing Disney did get right.

Yes. Those spots are extras on the original DVD release. Always found it slightly funny he had more lines in that teaser than in the movie itself. I think the decision to leave him mostly silent worked, though. And Maul still has one of the most iconic, important lines. "At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge."
