After our last review of the Spyder 5 Capture Pro system, the people over at Datacolor sent over the Spyder X Elite for us to try out. This brand new lens is years in the making, with a totally new lens, they claim it is the fastest and easiest to use Spyder ever. We check it out to see what we think. Having consistency in photo and video color workflows is really important to verify a consistent output, we test out this affordable consumer product to do just that.

Josh just got my Spyder Ex after watching your video. Thanks to your tutorial I now have my IMac calibrated. My brightness was way to bright. After calibrating I edited some photos and they now look so much better. They are brighter and colors are great. I’m going to ask a stupid question. The calibration called to lower the brightness so I got it on the mark. I assume I leave the brightness as the calibration suggested, correct ? Thank you so much for your tutorial as it has made a big difference to my portraits. You are the “man”. I’ve subscribed to your channel.

Yeah essentially leave brightness as is. If it feels too dark you can turn up your room light a bit before calibration to get a slightly higher number. Like 180 instead of 120 for instance. Then recalibrate to that brightness and leave it alone.

I am still using the Spyder 5 Elite, just over a min to finish the scan is impressive! What I tend to do is go and make myself a cuppa and come back :D Nice to see you Josh!

What color space does the SpyderX calibrate to? Rec709? sRGB? P3?

They recommend a gamma of 2.2, but you can choose gamma and kelvin options. According to the icc profile display on a mac, it shows it as RGB. If you go to advanced settings, you can choose a target of what color space you want to match closest to, but I think by default it bases on your monitor technology. Both my 5k iMac screen and BenQ PD2700U show as RGB if you look at the space under the ICC profile, but not sure if that is the whole story.

Quick question: how often do you really need to calibrate the screen? Im having a hard time to justify the cost/purchase if this is a one time thing. Thanks

Zach Fang they recommend once a month and it does make a difference

@@TheCameraProject How does the screen uncalibrate itself?

D B I don’t think it uncalibrates, but lighting changes from ambient to seasonal lighting

My brother (expert night photographer) says he needs to calibrate his screens at least once a week... I doubt I'll have the patience (I'm the one making RU-vid videos), but we'll see how it goes. I still haven't made the purchase tho, I'm waiting until the end of the week.

After the calibration is done, will the color settings be applied to the display, mac OS/Windows? Or will there be an application of Spyder be running in the background applying the correction all the time? If it is a startup application of Spyder, what happens if you turn that off? do the colors get reverted back to what it was before the calibration? Can I use this sensor on curved displays as well? or does it require a 100% flat screen surface to prevent ambient light coming in?

I can only speak to MacOSX, but it applies it at the OS level. So while the datacolor software is set to run at startup, I believe it is just so that it an remind you at user set intervals to check your calibration. Quitting it (I just verified) does not effect color of the monitors.

You skipped their question about display controls (1:05 into vid). I don't know about these controls on an iMac 2020.

So is that better than the X-rite iDisplay1 or not ? The X-rite has an option to measure the ambient light before it does the calibration, does the X Elite has the same kind of option ?
@TheCameraProject
@TheCameraProject 5 лет назад
Haven't compared to x-rite, but I've heard good things about both. The X Elite can measure ambient light as well.
