Buy Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Downey to Lubbock lnk.to/downeylubbock Directed and Edited by Susan Vinci Director of Photography: Joe Murray Produced by David Barnblatt
Saw these two at Shank Hall in Milwaukee. Tickets were $ 35.00 and the stage was 30 feet from the men's room door. Joe Bonamassa is playing the Riverside Theater in March. $350.00 for a seat about the same distance from the stage. And I think Dave is the more talented of the two. Love that he plays these smaller venues so guys like me can afford to see his shows.

Every once in a long while, at age 60 you run into something new, different, built on the shoulders of the giants that came before... and yet, this newness came at a lifetime of experiences, outside of the ones that walked before... Alvin and Gilmore build on that rich heritage and make it theirs, an amazing treat. Thanks guys, the whole band!
This song is in my head always & forever! This video is so fabulous! That’s me & my magical friends! (Black hair, red lips, cheetah print, red rose, smilin’ dancin’ lovin’ fool) Thank you Nancy, Dave & Jimmy & cast & crew! So honored to be a part of this rock ‘n roll history! Ukulena hits the screen with the legends! How cool!
I say this from the point of view of someone who has been in a couple three music videos himself (with my band back in South Africa): You were magnificent.
The groove just shreds. Two of my faves. 30 years ago, I used to see the Blasters and Los Lobos at the Warfield in San Francisco. Every 4 or 5 months they would come back, and the bands would flip the top spot!! Must have seen them 10-12 times in those days. Dave is still one of my favorite guitar players and singers. Great to see the same strat you've been playing for so many years!! Sound is like cutting steel! Amazing!! And Jimmie...may God shine his love down on you and continue to bless you. You continue to break my heart with your amazing voice!!
Funny...I grew up in & lived in the next town South of Downey, Norwalk. When Dave and Phil first started showing up on the circuit for the rockabillies as "the Blaster's", we waited for the free paper to hit the stands telling us where the action would be for the weekend. My daughter's middle name is marie.everytime that song came on, I told her "the boys" wrote that for her! What's the harm?! Made a kid feel awesome! Man! Memories! I had a great time in those days! Thanks, Dave!

This is the first song I'm aware of that mentions my old home town (at least for 6 years), Downey. (I think Lubbock might be mentioned in a few songs by the Flatlanders guys.) I went to Downey High, whereas the Alvin brothers went to our crosstown rival, Warren, but I was a few years ahead of them anyway. On the other hand, I was in the same grade level as Karen Carpenter, although I didn't know her. She was in the marching band. I was on the drill team.

I challenge anyone to sit still during this video. Dave Alvin on the Stratocaster and Jimmie Dale Gilmore on the harp with the strong beats laid down by the drums and bass makes it impossible to keep from moving. All this and topped off with Ukulena and friends bringing the video to life!🤩
I love you BOTH so much! Great Album Collaboration, Jimmie Dale Gilmore with Dave Alvin. Loved seeing you when this album was a "secret" at the Old Church in Portland - and now from Athens, leaving tomorrow for Atlanta to see you perform at The City Winery. YEAH. Congratulations! Love this VIDEO. Happy Birthday 11-11-18 to DAVE. XO

I've worked the Zoo Bar years in my college days, and both of these voices were formative. When they stopped by for a mid tour pop up show, and at only $15 cover, it was a steal. Hard to believe it was pre COVID
Two legendary singers..great album..great guitar work...rock on boys!!!!I have been to the "Ashgrove" !! Just saw them in Solana Beach, Ca. Epic performance..If you get a chance catch them you will not be disappointed.

This was a match made in heaven, two very individualistic iconoclasts, who have each charted their own very unique paths, and have not given a shit about mass commercial appeal, and have won the love & devotion of very passionate music lovers….. “May the Lord bless the doin’ of it”, as the great Irish playwrite Sean O’Casey put it….🙏🎶☘️🎭😎
Dave is back. We heard Dave, Jimmie Dale & Co. at the Roadhouse n Nicasio, CA. This is all you want in de luxe blues based, country strong, rock and roll.
I love, love, love Dave Alvin's music. And I love this song. I've seen Dave over a dozen times. But I wished the rest of the album was as good as this song is. More of a Dave backing Jimmie Dale Gilmore kind of record.
Sooo glad Dave & Jimmie Dale are coming to Baton Rouge Manship Theater November 16th. Can't wait, Guys. Always loved the music & lyrics of the Flatlanders. Your young & "old" fans know great music when we hear it. Keep on playing.

Experienced both Dave and Jimmie at HSB, and Dave with brother Phil at both HSB and Strawberry Music Festival . They continue to provide outstanding genre fusionised southern roadhouse bluesy rock n soul. Amen.
Hell yeah! There was a number of years that I saw Dave at least once per year. The first time was at the Star Bar with Fred Eaglesmith opening. What a show. The only time I saw Jimmy Dale was in Chattanooga with the Flatlanders. I REALLY need to get out to see them again.

@@flyingpaperwings I was, and am a huge Dave Alvin fan, I was there to see Dave. By the end of the opening set I was a huge Fred Eaglesmith fan as well. To make it even better it was in a room that held MAYBE 70-80 people if it was packed. I bought the Drive-in Movie CD from Fred that night and it was the only thing he had to offer. So I'm guessing that was 1998 or 1999. FWIW: The other best show I saw in that room was the first time I saw Alejandro Escovedo. He was traveling with his big band, I think he called it an orchestra. I had no idea who he was but a friend called me up on about an hours notice and said he would pay my way in if I drove him to and from in his car using his gas. How could I refuse? So, an hour later we were off on a 150 mile round trip for the show. The icing on the cake was Kelly Hogan standing in with him for several songs.
Since his tour in Vietnam, my big brother Dennis, has introduced me to great music and amazing bands. To have a brother with similar tastes in music, movies and books is remarkable and has made life a fun journey. I am Tully blessed. Texas blues hits my heart and my southern roots. Dave wrings every note he can from his well loved and well worn axe. He puts together amazing artists showcasing their talent and sharing that talent with us. I don't want to to stick Dave in "Texas Blues" I think instead Southern Blues at its best and brightest wraps Dave and his band up nicely. Hard driving. Growling. Sexy. Rocking Blues and thank you God for it and Dave Alvin!

Thanks, I'll look into them! I've been watching a lot of his live performances and they're great, most of the time I like them better than the original recordings. His interaction with the audience is always fun too.

I live in Palo Alto but drove an hour to HSB to see this group sing this song, especially whenJimmie says "i'm an old flat lander" 1:08 then went home. Not sure i finished the set. just wanted to hear that one song, one phrase. (There were about 100 other bands to see but I had me a JDG jones...)
