...which Scott would write about in one of his most highly regarded songs, "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive," recorded by country superstars Brad Paisley and Patty Loveless, as well as by Scott himself. In 2010, Brad Paisley's cover of the song "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" was the closing song played on the TV drama Justified during the final scene of the final episode of the first season. It was used again in the final episodes of the second and fourth seasons.

Great song, great cover of Darrell Scott classic, done real, real good! Justified and Dave Alvin, Boyd Crowder is happy despite Ava's trouble with the law - the sound tract is the reason.

Thanks! I've heard some incredible versions since I started looking. It seems it's not an easy song to sing - but if you can, it may be great! I hope they keep rotating them... not that I EVER want to see a season end.
Then, Don, you should try listening to the far better versions by Patty Loveless, Nick Page & Ruby Friedman, Red Molly, Kappa Danielson, Kathy Mattea, and any performance ever by Darrell Scott.

Yet their are people in the southern states who still want to mine saying they would take pride to die of black lung bc its been their way for generations
Do they always close with this version, or has it been alternated with Brad Paisley and Darrell Scott? Brad's is the most 'professional', but Darrell wrote it, and gives it a rootsy, gritty feel. And Dave strips it down to the bone! WOW.
I listened to this version and thought it was a pretty blatant copy of House of the Rising Sun. Then I listened to the others and realized that it's just that Dave makes it sound that way.
hey there.. Just letting you know that you are well enjoyed around the camp fires up in the Victorian High Country with a few bourbons. First heard you on Boot Liquor Radio and then got some tunes off ITunes. If you ever want to escape to Australia and see the high country the invite is there but make sure you have a guitar. Check my page out to see what the high country looks like and what we do. Again well done and keep the music coming...
I have to ask, where did you Alvin boys get your axes over the years. Just watched a video of you playing a pretty little Martin and watched three videos where your brother was playing a big Blonde 400 and a BLACK (BLACK...) 335 dot neck Gibson and a 54-56 Gibson Es-175. Your guitars weren't to be sneezed at either, but I'm sure you know what you've played. Even that little Kay your brother's been playing the last few years isn't just sitting in every pawn shop. You cats collect or are you trading out over time?
Darrell said Catrons Mountain...and though technically part of the Cumberland Mountain range...we here in Harlan County like that little nuance that made the song seem more Harlan County. I think Brad Paisely does the same. Patty Loveless version would be a lot better if she has followed suit with that little part.. This guy I don't care for much.
