Great picture of Mackay threatening Billy Bremner. Sadly Dave is not looking after the Spurs players anymore.

Remember him from early sixties. One of those players who could run the show seemingly effortlessly, and without perhaps receiving the accolades he was due. Great player though, full of grit and guile, and glued the team together with his nous and passing and movement. Clough knew a talented player, when he saw one. Just look at all the clubs he was with, winning cups and leagues. He would fit in perfectly as a deep midfielder for Man Utd right now, and take them to winning titles and cups!!!

A great footballer who was known for being a tough nut but he was definitely capable of holding his own on the ball. Reminds me a lot of Roy Keane in that regard. Also agreed that he'd fit in seamlessly in the modern era.

Hearts would have won more if he`s stayed For instance that League in 64/ 65 season and League Cup Final of 1961 and Sc Final of 1968 when he was supposed to be coming back till Cloughie stepped in .

Not quite as mobile as Keane, but better passer and link player. I would be tempted to have him in an all-time great team on left midfield, Bobby Moore behind him, then Keane and Duncan Edwards on right of midfield and central defence, although I like Ferdinand, so maybe 3 at the back. Probably Scholes in front of them to ping passes to forwards. Just an idea! Mackay was great though, especially in a passing team, like Clough's, Leeds of 70's, Liverpool a bit later, and Man Utd too with Fergie. He spoke at his funeral I noted earlier. Both Scots, but they used to turn out lots of really good players at one time. All the best!

That would a brilliant midfield. If I were to have a crack at an all time British-Irish XI it'll look something like this. Banks, A. Cole, Moore, McGrath, Armfield, Robson, Keane, Charlton, Giggs, Best, Law Fair to say, it's easy to see where my allegiance lies and it I'd be the first to admit that it's biased. The likes of Souness, Bremner, Giles, D.Edwards, Scholes, Mackay, Greaves, Rio, Gazza, Dalglish etc could easily replace some of the players in the XI, so it's a matter of personal preferences too.

@@footballsgreatest2645 Funnily enough, I thought of Robson as my first reserve for left mid, and Ince for right, McGrath would have been unbelievable if it wasn't for the knees. I would have your left back as reserve too, with Terry Cooper just nicking it, right back, either Madeley for athleticism, or Irwin who was better on ball, and could score from distance. Up front has to be Cantona, Shearer reserve, with Giggs and Best on wings, with reserves probably Matthews and other winger from those days, names gone, although Barnes and Waddle were decent, and Kanchelskis too, as the latter was my style of playing. Charlton for Scholes in some games. Manager...SAF, Director of Football...Sir Matt, assistant coach, Docherty. Banks in goal, Shilton reserve. Few extra support cast in squad...Giles, Hunter, Tommy Taylor, Law, Greaves, Lofthouse, Keegan, Franny Lee and definitely Colin Bell. Man Utd should have signed him before City, but that's coming from an old Man Utd fan!.
