Thanks so much for this reaction! I have been wanting to unveil them to you both for so long! Had a marathon lined out for 5 months but it just never worked out! And i wanted it to be both of you! DMB will Always be a top 5 band for me! I am a huge fan and i knew you would both enjoy them. Carter Beauford , the drummer in this band is my third favorite drummer behind Danny Carrey and Gavin Harrison. You need to deep dive into this band. Dave is a great songwriter and the musicians surrounding him or so talented. They have many different type of songs , styles! They also are influenced by “the Dan”.. thanks for being such amazing people and for the friendship! I am thankful everyday, that i clicked on your channel a couple years back! Love you! Nick , you really need to do a full album!😊
Thanks, Eric. I was working up a DMB request also. And Yes, I was in a few of those concert crowds too. Always delivered the extended versions live - could last all night. Props to Carter Beauford … and the memory of that balloon truck outside the concert gate. Lol 😎. Great reaction, Nick & Lex ! ❤️🔥😽
Thanks for the reply , you are legend here! Glad you are part of this community. I am excited for the concert . Its been 7 years since i saw them last. I know the new lineup is different. Miss Boyd Tinsley on violen and LeRio more on flute/sax. But they still sound great live to this day! Take care Michele!!❤
Eric, I saw them in London on 12 March 2019 on their last tour here. They were brilliant, didn't really miss Boyd's violin too much, and they played 'All Along The Watchtower' as an encore. Absolutely spellbinding. Along with Elbow, my favourite live band.
One thing about DMB is their live versions almost always sound better than their studio recordings. Being a jam band their improvisation and musicianship comes out better live. They play different sets every night.
One of my favorites since their first album. I would say try "Ants Marching", "Blood in the Water", "Bartender", or "The Song that Jane Likes". I just saw them in concert a few months ago. They have had some personel changes over the years and have a more rock sound now without the violin and permanent addition of Tim Reynolds as a guitarist.
Right now there are 7 members. 3 are still there from the original crew (Dave, drummer, bassist). They started out with 5. Saxophonist passed in 08 and the violinist was released from the band in 2018. They have added another sax player, trumpet player, electric guitarist and keyboardist since the original crew.
Eric, you have made my day. I have been curating a DMB marathon in my mind for quite a while, and you have blown everything open! I haven’t listened to the reaction yet as I'm away for the weekend, but will do tomorrow. A great choice for NicknLex to hear first off. Dave and the guys don't come to the UK often, but I'm there every time they do. Thanks!!
I took my son and daughter to see DMB over 12 years ago. They have now seen him over 20 times (yes, I’m jealous). Their live sets are amazing! Completely agree with the other recommendations! I would also add “ Bartender”, “Spaceman” and “Funny the Way it is”! Be careful with this rabbit hole! Love your channel!!!
The Original band was five members, Dave on Acoustic guitar, a bass player, a sax player, who died in a snowmobile accident, the Drummer, and a violin player, who is no longer in the band, I think now the band has extended to 8 or 9 players adding another guitar, Trumpet, and keyboards. "Ants Marching" from their debut album is still my favorite piece.
I remember DMB back when they were a local band and played a mile from my house! This track was a deep one... next time try "Ant's Marching" or "What Would You Say". Funny that you mentioned Grunge... I was working in radio in the 90s and Grunge was everywhere. When DMB finally got their major label deal and released "Under The Table And Dreaming", I remember the phone lines LIT up when we started playing "What What You Say" because it sounded so much different and was like a breath of fresh air compared to all the doom and gloom. Great reaction!
Thanks for bringing back the "Woo!". I missed it on a previous show, and my day was off kilter thereafter. When I think of Dave Matthews, I always remember when Jen Harris asked me to a party where Dave Matthews was going to be. Since I didn't know Dave, I declined. A shame because I know he would have loved meeting me. ;) This is probably the coolest I've heard from Dave. Thanks y'all! Keep up the good woo!
Also , the doing a tour this year to support their new album coming in May. I am going to see them at the Gorge Amphitheater in George , Washington. Amazing venue , i have seen them 6 times there throughout many different stages of my life! Peace to everyone here! Hope people that love this channel tune in! This band is special!!
So excited to see you finally check out DMB! One of my favorite bands, Ive seen them 10 or 11 times since their first tour. Even now they are regularly one of the top 5 or 10 highest grossing live acts pretty much every time they tour, over the last 30 years. Their shows are a musical celebration, and his fans are devoted the same way the Dead's fans are. Their drummer Carter Beauford for me is 2nd only to Neil Peart as the best drummer of the last 40 years. He plays live exactly what you hear on the album and its hard to believe one guy can play drums like that at all, let alone for 2 and a half hours a night! His jazz and progressive rock influence are obvious.
@@michelfroggy56 As a DMB show veteran, this is true! LOL. You always get your money's worth, and best of all...a different setlist every night! It's always a pot luck surprise, unlike 90% of bands now that do the exact same setlist, in the exact same order at every show. Yuck!
I wondered when you guys would react to some DMB! Definitely has a 90s sound but I find it more infused with elements of progressive and jazz than their contemporaries. Musically I think they are near the top of the talent pool of other music from the time. I always love sharing in your experience of a new and fantastic artist! SMASHED! ( And long time subscriber of course)
You guys should check out anything from Dave Matthews Band (DMB) first 4 albums, their early stuff, especially their albums Remember Two Things, Under The Table and Dreaming, Crash, and Before These Crowded Streets are their best period imo, and what they are known for. Good songs for reactions...Crush, Jimi Thing, Lie In Our Graves, Dont Drink The Water.
To me, by far their best song musically. HUGELY underrated from a musician perspective. Anyone who doesn't think DMB has progressive tendencies needs to give this song a really good listen from the middle of the song and out. Absolutely unbelievable!
This one closed the encore at my first show, on 5.11.99. Seen them 33 times since then, with shows 35 and 36 on tap for next month. They're an experience unlike any other.
Great memories with this album. Solid all the way through. Really enjoy the acoustic versions of these songs where it is just Dave and Tim Reynolds playing lead and rhythm guitars. Pure gold. Cheers
The wife and I are taking the kids to their first DMB concert in a couple weeks. Carter Beauford is on another level...one of the best drummers to do it. The whole band is next level.
You're in for a treat Nick and Lex DMB is such a diverse band with Dave who has a quirky voice in a good way which is so pleasing to the ear.....this rabbit hole will take you on very enjoyable trip and you won't be disapointed....I know Lex has heard them so girl you have to be excited for Nick (as we who know DMB) as he discovers the enchanting music he's about to discover😁....love your reaction you two❤ and can't wait for more DMB!!!!
Hi guys, I've finally got to see/hear the reaction. Excellent! I am a huge Dave Matthews Band fan. Some trivia not mentioned anywhere below yet.... Dave's family moved to South Africa when he was very young, and he spent his formative school years in Johannesburg, returning to the US around the age of 18. As a consequence you will find some of his songs have an African influence which he incorporates wonderfully into his sound which is so hard to categorise. Certainly not grunge, but rock, jazzy sometimes perhaps, folky, bluesy, Americana. It's like a big old melting pot, which makes them so interesting and brilliant live. His first 4 albums in the 90's are probably his most popular, but every album since then has had wonderful tracks on them and I hear they are touring a new album shortly. Hopefully they will cross the pond for a show, they usually do, and I will be there. I've seen them about six times at venues of varying sizes but always the gig is amazing. Such a wonderful live show, all music for 3 hours at least. I'm so pleased you are discovering this marvellous, original band xx
I love that you somewhat ID'd this as grunge-ish in style.... Grunge (Seattle) was making it's debut at the same time this album was created (Charlottesville) on literally the opposite side of the USA map. The alternative music from the early 90's was definitely a product of a generation that was ready for more authentic/deeper meaning musicianship. It was "alternative" because folks weren't used to anything else that sounded like it being popularized before.
Dave Matthews voice is so different and so unique--Please do deep dive, go back to their earlier years, as some have mentioned in comments....Great react!
They have so many great songs. I definitely hope you explore more. If you do you’ll come to recognize their signature sound. I’ll be watching for more DMB
What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle? I violin hasn't had beer spilled on it! Try "Tripping Billies' or 'Ants Marching' next. Two complete bangers. Peace from San Francisco
As a huge fan of Dave Matthews and the entire band, this isn't one of the ones I'd think to suggest first. But it's an important piece of their catalog for sure. They're the kind of band you should really listen to an entire album at a time. Each track stands alone, but with no bad songs hearing, an entire album is much more of a beautiful journey.
They have a deep catalogue but some of my favorites are Ants Marching, Jimi Thing, Lie in Our graves, Save Me, What Would You Say, So Much to Say, Proudest Monkey
Drive In, Drive Out is an interesting choice as an entry point to DMB, though it was the first song of theirs that I vibed with as a grunge kid in the 90's, before going in this direction. There are so many more to suggest! Also, the drummer is a legend. Good on yall for trying to keep up!
I believe this is a later version of one of their earlier recordings, as amazing as This is, the original is on another level of real...this is like the original with a buzz....even if you do not react you owe it to yourself to hear the original
You two should really check out Dreaming Tree from DMB. Written in 7/4 it is probably one of their most progressive songs. The live versions at Piedmont Park or Summer Tour Warm up are killer. And Carter Beauford is a great drummer.
DMB son una gran banda. Grandes músicos todos ellos y muchas canciones fantásticas: #41, Ants Marching, Don’t drink the water o Grey Street por decir algunas. En directo son impresionantes.
Interesting song choice for your first listen. I'd commend Ants Marching, Grey Street, or Stay (Wasting Time)... got to listen to live tracks though! Huge difference. Check out the Central Park concert
Do yourselves a monster favor and watch some live DMB--I highly recommend their Neil Young cover of Cortez The Killer at the Central Park NY concert with Warren Haynes from Gov't Mule and Allman Brothers Band on guitar--ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! If you like the drumming watch DMB drummer Carter Beauford sometime. He just grins the whole time like he can't believe he gets to do that for a living, ripping up the drums and blowing bubbles with his gum. He's just wonderful as is the whole band.
Hey guys I'm kind of a jam band aficionado, there are so many other great bands out there especially live but please check out string cheese incident or moe.
This band has far too many styles to categorize. I'd suggest a few more of their earlier tunes, "Tripping Billies", "Too Much", or "Crush". The latter is a very smoky and sexy tune. You must do the album version, which was extended and contained a fantastic outro.
DMB is a great addition to your reaction jukebox. Fills a hole in the requests considering DMB is one of the best things in music in the last 30 years, imo. Peace out 👍👍
That's Dave's voice. He wasn’t trying to sound like anyone else. He has a very unique voice as he's from South Africa. His voice is still very much like this, but has aged like a fine wine. He still sounds incredible live. The whole band is incredible live.
Comparing DMB to Grunge is comically bad. “They’re the 90’s, so they must be grunge.” 😂😂 Ridiculous. Also, Carter Beauford is what Neil Peart wishes he was.
