Dave Mustaine talks about the censorship surrounding Megadeth's music videos, MTV's hypocrisy, and the emerging "cyberarmy" of Megadeth fans on the Internet (1995).
Dave was a man ahead of his time. I remember e-mailing him AND getting a response way back in the early 90's when I was in college. Very cool and very appreciative of his fans.
Really shows how much Dave really cares for fans, to see him get really personal and really try to communicate with fans despite a language barrier is really outstanding on his part.
wow!! dave knew that the Internet would be ubiquitous. some say he's an asshole. i say, we need strong thinkers like him on our team. i don't agree with him 100% (im an atheist ), but this man is a true legend!!
@ANDYB1478 yeah because Kurt Cobain never did drugs. He's a real role model. Honestly I admire mustaine 100000 times more than Kobain. He had a freaking tough life and he never gave up, Cobain had some problems that weren't as near as bad as the ones that Dave had and he commits suicide. Mustaine is a role model, he could create a sucessful band and he's one of the best rhytm guitarrist ever (as a guitar player is much better than Kurt) when he grew up in shitty conditions .
i have a new found respect after watching this video. esp. the part where he interacts with the fans. he doesn't treat them or act like he's this big rock star or celebrity. just like people that love his music and he appreciates it obviously. awesome guy. rock on megadeth.
I had the opportunity to show I was involved with the internet, by calling out I was part of Dave's megadeth fourms. He signed my endgame booklet with my fourm username. I have my upmost respect for him and I wont forget his kindness.
I still think it's silly how people that kill themselves seem to get more credit than people who fought and won over their demons, like Dave did. Lots of people still think he's an asshole, I think he's one of the strongest men I've ever heard of.
@xXhanson900Xx I love Dave I think he's brilliant and has fronted one of the most important bands in the world for almost 30 years but he went to rehab fifteen times before he was clean. I am just pointing out that he didn't recover fast. If anything this shows his perseverance and ability to follow his goals until they are completely accomplished.
@ANDYB1478 Yes, he should have the right because he actually took the effort to dig his way out of the hole instead of whining about his life and offing himself. Suicide is one of the weakest things you could do when faced with a great challenge and Dave is rightfully pointing that out.
Keyword being EX-junkie and EX-alchoholic. A guy beats his demons that he have been struggling with his entire life and turns his life around... yes that is a good role model. Maybe not to non-users, but to people that are trying to stop using, he would be a fine rolemodel.
Wow, Dave was on the ball in '95! Here we are 16 years later, and wouldn't you know it, the internet is where people discover music, share their own creations, and now the movement of popular music has shattered into sub-sets. There is no more universal superstar, just giants of their genres. As for MTV, they feed off of the stupidity of the average teenager's sense of humor now. They no longer have Music Television in their name. Good. They haven't been Music Television for eons....

And he's making a good example on Germany: we have the GEMA, an official organisation to make them and musicians and producers richer by getting money from people that play trademarked music in public (bars, taxis or concerts), also from youtube. but yt won't pay them their damn money, so almost every protected content on yt is not available in germany. e.g.: you have to 'cheat' a little bit to watch videos like the music video of Trust
He speaks his mind. He didn't say that to disrespect Cobain. But are you going to look someone right in the eye and tell them Dave DOESN'T have a point with that? It's called speaking your mind and being blunt. When you do that you're bound to offend some people, there's no getting around that.
lol shit, i didn't even know there was internet back then. He's definitely right about the internet. If it wasn't for youtube, and various forums on the net, I would never have been introduced to metal.

Dave Sure knew his stuff back then. on top of that, he was extremely polite to the fans from the internet. and like the other guy said (Sorry i forgot whom but he said what needed to be said.) Other musicians would've just gotten into their ferrari and gone home to rap out lyrics someone wrote for them.
This is amazing. Dave said this in 1995 when the interent for most Americans was very new. Unfortunately, the whole MTV hipocracy thing didn't work. Still about 1:53-2:59 really applies to today's world (or from around 1998 to today) and to think this was said 3 years earlier is amazing and the fact that bubble gum pop really wasn't what it was back in 1998 or so.

@DreamFactory91 For me it was also difficult learning to listen to Megadeth. His voice is unlike anything (best to compare it with a 90 year old man who drunk too much alcohol with a strap around his balls), the sound is not that heavy, rather sharp, and there are quite some tempo changes so you wont understand all songs at one listen. But really, I started liking all those things and I love the fact that its so original. Is there any band like Megadeth? No. Its one of my fav bands now :).
Actually I didn't know that, I don't know and I can't know that (if he was murdered) so I can't say anything about that. But I still prefer Mustaine over Cobain every day of the year
True hip-hop artists don't solely talk about how much sex they have or how much money they have, that's known as commercial music. Metal isn't the only genre that has posers is what I mean.

@lebensraummetal No, but being able to play the guitar WITH emotion, is better than being able to wank the guitar without emotion. And by the way, Hendrix was 100 times more technical than Dave Mustaine, just in a different genre. I like Dave Mustaine's playing, but I don't like Herman Li. Why? Because it might be fucking technical, but emotionally it's completely dead. So yeah, emotion makes the guitar sound better.
@lebensraummetal You're wrong, emotion make good guitarplaying, technique is only good if you can use it with emotion. Since Hendrix is the guitarist who has been able to control his emotion and ideas through his ability to play guitar he is the greatest guitarist of all time. Music is emotion and idea, not motor control. Every idiot can train himself to play ridiculously fast by training, but making music out of it, that's the art.
I dont really believe that its really MTVs fault. I mean. People started to listen to hip hop more. And today. It seems that thats what mosty everyone listens too. MTV just wanted to stay as modern as everyone else. And I think its great that metal isnt played on that channel anymore. Then you will have little punk ass kids wearing Megadeth or Iron Maiden shirts. MTV is dead to all of us. Its for people that care too much about themselves with those stupid reality shows.
I got to agree with Dave Mustaine MTV doesnt show music it shows popular music and nothing more. Invictus if u think that just because someone on TV that some people admire say Hip hop sucks the others listen ur dead wrong however when some celebrities or people who are on the TV launch a stereotype about metal fans and metal artists everyone believes. I take for example Marilyn Manson everyone thinks hes a freak but he isnt hes a normal guy who shocks people with his music.
yea man i didnt mean to generalise but the majority of rappers ARE stupid. u hav the handful that are gifted at what they do. as for the black metal thing, i think of them as rappers, same reasons, that being majority of them are stupid. not a fan of that type of music either but thats a diff story. well theres guna be idiots everywhere, whether it be in every genre of music or every country or watever but this video really touched on the stupidity of mtv an mainstream hip hop etc

@ANDYB1478 At least for what I've read he was depressed because his parents divorced and because people miss understood his music and I don't think that is a life that bad that you have to commit suicide. I didn't know him and I've never suffered a depression. I've never read mustaines autobiography but I will read it then I 'll if it is that bad

the only reason rap is so big is because idiots go and watch TV or listen to the radio and see/hear rap and think everyone likes it so they go out and listen to it too.....it just shows how big of an impact the media has over everyone....its like no one has a mind of their own they just go and follow what everyone else does
It's true, the underground and "true" metalheads took the internet as their home in the early 90's...it's kind of like the tape-trading I used to make back in the day! of course though...the internet is a huge place/network so there's many awesome bands you can get to know as there are many fake horrible bands you can get to know...

@pm2595 How do you know how bad Kurt Cobain's problems were? Did you know him? Have you ever suffered with depression? I've read Mustaine's autobiography and all he talks about is drugs, drugs and more drugs. His book is a waste of paper.
yeah, thats not widely accessible though. Dave came up with a good point that it metal is pretty censored... the whole "if you dont like it, just dont listen to it " comes up. There should be stations, but the pop mass doesnt want them

this was '95. there probably was only one way of talking on the internet then. windows '95 was the new amazing operating system, 64mb ram was considered good. internet was on 56k if u were lucky.

Hendrix wrote several dozen songs, is best known for a cover of someone else's song, and overdosed on a toilet. End of fucking story. You're comparing Michaelangelo with Jackson Pollock. I should have remembered sooner the futility of discussing hendrix with someone who says he's the best, because they will never even consider otherwise, no matter what.
@snakeweirdo A super-emotional amateur who can barely play the guitar is not at all better than someone with minimal emotions and incredible playing skill. Even at lesser extremes, jimi hendrix, a minimally technical player who wrote a few catchy songs can never be as good as an superior skilled player who writes lots of catchy songs. He's dead. He cant improve. He didnt even write many songs. There's no way a 27 year old knew all there is to know about playing the guitar.
@snakeweirdo wow so being completely unimpressive at playing the guitar but having very strong emotions (about who knows what the fuck, just the fact that you have them is all that matters) is all it takes to be a great guitar player. Not devoting hundreds of hours to mastering the instrument and pushing yourself to the edge of human limitations. Maybe hendrix was just better than everyone else because of magical emotion power that made his guitar sound better or something?
@snakeweirdo Only people who know jack shit about playing the guitar call hendrix the best. People who are too modest to badmouth him wont argue it. All hendrix was good for was showmanship and parlor tricks. Emotion alone doesnt make guitar work good, but superhuman motor control and conditioning do. Even Hendrix himself admitted in interviews that there were plenty of guitarists in his day that were better than him. Plus, there were classical guitarists who blew him out of the water.
IMO MTV should be forced to removed the M(usic) and replace that RS (Reality Show), because that's all they play and they haven't played music in years!
