My first video on this channel was a comparison of the first season of FX's shows Dave and Atlanta. Now that both season of each show are out I'm adding another volume to the collection.

Idk I feel like Atlanta has hiro murai and that’s why its more cinematographic but Dave is cool because we get to see the present day of rap and how rap is used as a skill whereas in Atlanta we only have paperboys perspective

Atlanta is a deeper show but you expect to be deep. It's a better show, has less flaws. Dave seems to be another silly comedy but suddenly hits you hard. And also, I didn't like Lil Dicky as a rapper, but after the last episode of season 1...He's flow and STORYTELLING skills are unmatched. The end of season 2 had me in tears TBH.

Watched the first episode of this then the second one immediately after, and was shocked when I saw your subscriber count, both very well made and you have such a good way of portraying your opinions and analyses of both series. You deserve a far wider reach than you’re getting, but I have a feeling it’s only a matter of time until it finds it’s way here. Looking forward to all the videos you make going forward!!

Honestly I think it’s just because Atlanta isn’t that popular of a show right now. It’s crazy how underrated the show is. You’d think with the cast it has alone it would be way more popular.

In my opinion Gata is the star of Dave. His story touched me more than Dave's plot I've only ever seen snippets of Atlanta but I'm gonna do a full dive soon

Dave is obviously inspired by Atlanta, as a fan of both shows I will say that the Similarities are obvious and I enjoy both shows but Atlanta is the superior show

Dave is a comedy, Atlanta is not. Donald Glover was very direct when saying he wanted to make a rappers version of Twin Peaks. The two just shouldn't be compared.

Excellent parallels. I am especially fascinated by your (accurate) characterization of Atlanta as a character, and an important one at that. With the new season being set in Europe, I am interested to see how they are going to handle that shift.

Definitely seems like Atlanta is a state of mind. Seems like wherever they go they bring that Atlanta energy with them. Also despite finding themselves in similar situations like: needing money, going to jail, being at boogie parties, getting robbed, and being around black face for weird holiday traditions, they’re handling it better. They’re thriving in a way because they’re more seasoned and less stressed. The core cast is more relaxed while the side episodes seem to hold most of the drama.

I agree with the tone of the first ep of Dave being cringe. It sets the tone for the season and I quite honestly lost respect for the character. I finished the season a year later feeling like i should give it another chance. It still feels like a guilty pleasure as there is something about lil dicky that ain't right. Can't help but feel like he uses big names to justify his characters behavior.

Do you think you could ever see yourself doing episode breakdowns for Atlanta Season 3 and Dave season 3. I'm a great episode into Atlanta season 3 and ea h episode is hitting so hard and is so chilling. Making the type of commentary that isn't dated but more like a dark twisted fairytale. It reminds me of bojack horseman where you never know if the main cast is actually going to win ultimately at the end of the series. Compared to Dave where we know he's sad but he still gets his success story. Edit, Shit I just saw the episode recap videos. Watching now.

I like Dave a lot but Atlanta is on a different level. Atlanta has much better writing and directing. if anything Atlanta reminds me more of Louie than dave imo

I'm really not feeling Atlanta season 3 so far, I understand everything it's saying but I feel that in dropping the character and comedy focus of the show it's lost what made it relatable and enjoyable.

Tried watching the first episode of Dave, just didn't feel it. From the cinematography, comedy approach and even the title shot hip hop music cuts are the main stylistic similarities but content wise Atlanta >>>> all the way for me. Granted I only watched an episode.

I respect that. Apples to oranges for sure. Atlanta is heavy. You're definitely leaving money on the table by not watching DAVE though, very surprisingly deep moments.

I honestly didn’t like Dave until the 4th episode. I’d give it another try since it’s so easy to binge. If you don’t like it after the 4th episode, it’s probably not for you.

I’m a year late but fuck it lmao. I was a huge Dave fan when it first came out, it was probably my favorite show. Now that I’ve seen all of Atlanta it’s so mediocre to me. The best episodes are the ones that focus on his hype man or his girlfriend.

Dave s1 was cool because it was funny, s2 was kinda mid/boring, and lacks flow. You can't copy something/idea and then not know where to take it (I feel like this is Dave's problem musically as well, he doesn't really have a "reason" to rap, and that's why despite how talented he his; he doesn't drop or make music consistently). He can only be talk about generic and/or weird & funny topics because what else is there to him and his story? But jokes get old 🤷🏾‍♂️ Gambino learned to stop always trying to make things funny/joke, and his show isn't just about him more so compared to Dave (which gives ppl other reasons to get invested in the show).

Dave season 2 took more risks, every episode felt unique and artistic, whereas season 1 was a more traditional comedy

@@porkeywings true, I just don't think it payed off (or ever was going to) given the story and character. Dave's story isn't that deep, and characters aren't complexed enough to do anything more than a generic Romance and/or comedy sitcom. I feel like the show was at its best when it focused on Dave, his relationship and becoming a superstar (that's all relatable, and they did it in a cool way). Sadly the characters don't have enough setup for more than. They tried to shift and make it serious, but there wasn't much set up for the others' story in s1 so s2 just feels off. Compared to Atlanta, where everything and everybody is constantly evolving/changing, so the story can as well and it doesn't feel out of place. Just my opinion tho lol

When you realized Dave is kinda a spoiled asshole (in the show lol), I feel less attracted to watch s2 because most of the problems are of his own creation.. he also doesn't seem to be growing as a person throughout the show (outside of being a rapper), so it makes it even worse to watch imo.
