Most Musicians specifically song writers have incredible vocabularies because like people who write books for a living a large part of their job is playing with words I had a great uncle who was a musician he never made it huge but he wrote for people who did and really he was just a ole school country good ole boy smoking weed and drinking in his trailer most of the time doing shows to barley keep the lights on ... But that man was extremely intelligent when it came to his knowledge and understanding of the English language ... He taught me to never assume shit about anyone because I probably wouldn't know any of what I just told you if I didn't know him
Would have loved to hear all of Dave's thoughts on the matter, unfortunately the rest of the panel was too busy looking like idiots. Who the hell ever uses the term niggardly? Why dig so deep for a descriptive word? And, of all the words you could use, that's the one you pick? Dave is 100% right. He's a stupid idiot.
I'm surprised Dave didn't use his heat vision even once. He kept his Adamantium claws hidden and as far as I can see wasn't even wearing his power ring
Haha. Thanks. It may, indeed, be spitting into the wind to fight it, but I think it behooves all of us not to lower the bar, but to try to keep it raised and to elevate people to it.
I don't agree with Wyndorf totally, but I do agree that when you're in a position in the spotlight and you use a word like "niggardly," you're going to get flack, even if it's undeserved. It's in your best interest not to use to word if it saves you grief from morons.
Human beings are so stupid --- I love when Dave was 'called out' on the meaning of 'niggardly'.... that proved the point more than anything else that was said.... I mean, who on this panel could be called out more than Dave - his lyrics, etc. soooo could be called into question, and yet, he was intelligent and diplomatic about the whole issue.... Good gawd, how I could go on and on....
Dave had a very relevant point. Bill Mahr, well on his way to fully embracing his Hefner/sub-Carlin blended character and the other three being caught off guard made way for a hilariously panicked recovery before quickly switching to commercial, but hey...interesting points all around.
He has become ones of the ugliest faces of pc and censorship since then, more or less a clown who will say anything for attention, e.g money. Claims freedom of speech yet is radically opinionated and "knows" he is CORRECT on every issue
I understand the whole point about pronunciation, dialects, etc. I also understand the whole point about teaching to your audience. I'm an Australian teaching English in Taiwan, if that helps to explain where I'm coming from.
i think both points have merrit people sould be educated enough to know its not a racial slur but at the sametime if your intellgent and in the public eye you use clear concise language so you do not have public backlash. good clip
Remember when Tony Romo started saying a work that started with N, stopped and people wanted him canceled for a word he did not say, and in no way was going to say.
0:42 Don't I know it. I slurred my words when saying "I went to a tapas bar" in front of women and got shocked reactions. Oh, and I make sure to say "I like FOREIGN films" (it could sound like "porn films"
The onus is indeed upon the speaker not to be misunderstood in the sense of speaking correctly. However, the onus is upon the listener to ask someone who knows about such things or to use a dictionary to find out. I still look up words all the time, and I'd consider myself better educated than most. Jumping instantly to offence (especially by journalists who should know) when someone else uses an English word correctly does show ignorance (often willing) or some sort of political mischief.
I'm spanish so I didn't understand a 100% of what they said, but did they say that a man was fired for using a word wich's pronunciation is similar to "niga" but has an absolutly diferent meaning, and Dave is against this guy?
He's against the lack of common sense this guy had ... It's no secret America is overly politically correct and this guy was either a idiot for not realizing the amount of trouble that word was going to get him in or was a idiot for knowing this and using the word anyway I'm not saying it's right because truthfully it's a load of BS but we have to learn to survive in the world were given even if it is full of crap
I think people in the states would feel just as passionate about the last election if Hilary Clinton was the democratic nominee and not Obama. Or if said nominee was Chinese,Mexican or Eskimo origin. People where happy(across the world) to see that the American dream isn't exclusive to someone who's straight, white and male for a change
There are other rafined or sophisticated word that you could use instead of " niggardly ", you know what I mean. If you're doing a speech or whatever that is exposed to the mass media, then you have to choose your word carefully, i mean, iggardly is not the only refined word to express the stingy idea. Using the word niggardly is good on some circonstances, it relfects your culture or whatever, but it's really silly to use it in front of the media.
DAVE is right here and still relevant today. I wonder how Bill Maher thinks today on these old subjects. Did anyone catch Mahers sick and twisted ending. Watch his eyes when he says it.
While I admit that i would have probably perceived the word the way most of the people did (having never heard the word niggardly in my life) I fully object to firing a man because of a lack of knowledge on everybody elses part. His career has been set back 10 years because other people interpreted a word incorrectly? That's a fucking joke.
English has well over 100,000 words. Some of us who weren't educated in the American public system have larger vocabularies than 10,000 words, thank you! Anyway, there are two things to say. Firstly, (at least in American English) they don't sound the same. Note the "ar" and "er" sounds. Secondly, if one doesn't know something, then guessing is at best a guess, and at worst, something that will lead to a bad mistake. Why make excuses for someone who is ignorant over someone who isn't?
Some of us who WERE educated in the American public system have larger vocabularies than 10,000 words, thank you! Because, you know, some of us are capable of educating ourselves.
The human person is not the human body. Where they came from in relationship to where they were born on Earth or supposed heritage. The color or shape of their eyes, the color of their skin, their hair or hairdo, the clothing that covers the naked bodies, the shoes, the car, the yard, the fences that we build as supposed strengths. Only the human heart. The human race is family, all have the same heart. Angels are like cousins, in relationship to the human heart. Angels speak only GOD or LIES.
@TheBigMclargehuge - why, because he can correctly identify perception as a powerful sociological vehicle? Seems he's got a lot more sense than you genius.
Good on Dave for knowing the definition. With that said, an educator should have a bevy of adjectives that could describe "stingy" without having to resort to one that is so potentially incendiary, regardless of his audience's ability to percieve the intended meaning.
Dave is right he just didnt articulate why. One the perception of the word in question to the average listener would be that of dropping an N bomb. Two I've seen people use it in that context and as a dog whistle to those who dont know what it means. Three the the person who used it being a right winger speaking on budget in D.C. a predominantly black city at the time, kinda makes me believe he used it as a dogwhistle. Which in my book is just as good as saying the word straight out. Regardless if he used it correctly, the point being that he knew that the people being spoken to wouldnt completely understand its meaning. Those on his side taking it as a win cause he said the nigword. And those on the other being offended. The same way the chicken lady sitting next to dave assumes he and the rest of the audience/and panel dont understand what the word means.
I'm seeing whatyou're getting at here, and I have to agree that if you use a word that close to something very offensive you're on your own. It's not bright, it's not clever and it sure as shit isn't gonna win you any hearts. Like Dave said there are synonyms you coul duse instead, because, yes it stupifies those that do know the meaning of the word but then again in media if you say something that "sounds wrong" you get hanged. Like this guy was close to. It's just stupid and really pointless.
Regardless of how correctly he used the word, he should have anticipated the reaction. And it's not the phonetic proximity to the N word but poor judgement that justify the firing. Dumbing down is always bad, but when he could have said stingy, tight-fisted, miserly etc, niggardly was a poorly judged choice. He put his employer in a position of alienating the ignorant offended or firing him. He made himself a liability.
so he acteraly didnt use the "n" word it was a word that sounded like the "n" word? i mean ofcouse he should be fired if he used the "n" word and wasnt black but if it wasnt even that word whats everone going on about?
Both are correct about the word "niggardly" being uttered. Yeah, I wrote it, shoot me. Dave is correct because of the perception that gets applied to the word. Because it sounds like the word I can't write. Which bugs me. As a writer. It pisses me off. So I begrudgingly leave it alone. Because I also have friends who think I shouldn't say or write it. Even though that's a SLIPPERY SLOPE. People TRIED to ban Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer" over that word. ENOUGH WRITTEN. The perception CAN GET YOU KILLED (for Dave's point). As for Bill, though, I get his point, too. We are lowering the bar. We're instead of educating those who aren't privy we're acquiescing their ignorance for fear of an emotional response we're uncomfortable explaining. We give-in to those who need to be educated instead with pats on the head and phony apologies. And then every successive generation that comes down the line blames those before them, while my only question to those people is, "Who raised these kids?" Good stuff, though, to go back and rehash HOW WE GOT HERE TODAY.
Dave is right in some way. But I would stick to freedom of speech: if you said a word, that's close to forbidden word, but said word is not forbidden itseld - you're clean. I love MM, but this move is disappointing.
It's not a variation. One has its roots in northern Germanic languages, the other in the Romance languages. Completely unrelated origins, You're an idiot if you don't know the complete lack of relation in an etymological sense. Let's just dumb the language down though.
Love is Sacrificial. Sacred. Holy. Truth. Our Lord Christ Jesus showed LOVE on that Cross giving all away to show was never about the body. BUT the HEART only. Merit must be given to be gained. If it ain't Truth, why does it matter to you? Justifying hate based on hate, makes you their disciple. Following them.
Love MM, but Dave is reaching... You should never have to dumb yourself down to appease the ignorant. Yes, caution should be exercised with word usage, but noone should be penalized because of others' lack of education. Never.
OMG the was the beginning of the fake "woke" crowd lol and his is when i really liked Bill Maher. now hes the exact opposite of this. Cant stand him... Dave is completely wrong in this situation of course and i hate agreeing with Bill Maher now in 2021 but. if your unaware that 1. this isn't an English word and 2. aren't aware of its definition.. If your upset and don't know the word you'd ask "what do you mean by that?" or "what does that mean?" unless you yourself are a coward or a racist(or both) you wouldn't assume its racism.. assumption and fear "oh but it sounds close to a racist word" but yet it is in fact not ... You might get in trouble for using the word but you'd probably explain the word if your speaking to an american english crowd.. no?
