Not mentioned here, the smartest man on the field was the Phillies 3rd base coach. He sent Hoskins yelling at him to, "keep running, you're going to be out, keep running," because he saw how they called the play and how'd they'd allow the run immediately.

@@MrMurraypants this play alone shows that the obstruction rule is bs. Neither player are in the wrong here. Runner is where he should be, and fielder is where he should be able to make a play on the ball. It’s not like the fielder purposely ran into him, you can clearly tell when a fielder interferes, then it should definitely be called, but when it’s a bang bang play it should be incidental contact. Cant just say the fielder has to allow a ball to go past him because he might make contact with a runner while making a play on a ball off the bat.

The ump was telling the manager that cursing him out while they're having a conversation about the play is acceptable, but doing it while walking away is not. It is considered disrespectful. There is nothing unique about that viewpoint, it is normal baseball etiquette. When the ump said "say it to my face" the manager had *already* been tossed. The ump provoked nothing, he was just explaining the decision. Not even remotely like the palm molester. Growing up, my parents had a similar approach. Umpire accountability is the number one problem in baseball by a wide margin. Like Jomboy said, it's easy to see why they got it wrong in real time but there is no way you can look at that replay and stand by the ruling. Umps double down anyway because they are unimpeachable thanks to their union. Bad calls like this should be held against them as any mistake would be against any employee. After so many mistakes they should be demoted. Managers and players are held to the highest standard in this sport where anything less than a world class performance results in the loss of their jobs. Umpires need to be held to that same standard. Number two issue is the manfred runner. Its just a joke.

Be as profane as you want when you're pleading your case one on one, but it's really hard not to toss someone who is knowingly trashing you within earshot knowing you can't respond. If you notice that's when a lot of managers get tossed. Not saying it's right/wrong though. The alternative would be call his name, have him acknowledge you by turning around and walking toward you, then tossing him. That, while hilarious, would start an even bigger meltdown.

@richardpawl1664
@richardpawl1664 Год назад
Basically here's what happened, umps ruled interference against the fielder, interference is a judgement call, judgement calls can't be reviewed or reversed normally. After that the umps inferred that the fielder made two attempts on the ball when he clearly only made one, proving how bad of a call it really is. My opinion beyond that is that the runner interfered, the runner has the right to the baseline but the fielder has the right to attempt a play on the ball. Could have been an amazing play that stopped a run from scoring, but they collided so we will never know and it was close enough to where you can't say he had no chance at the ball if the runner wasn't there. This is why you either play in front of or behind the baseline, won't have this drama then.

It really couldn't have been, though. There is no way the SS gets to the ball. A perfectly timed full extension dive and he's still nowhere near it. The ball was on the other side of the bag even. His reflexes got the better of him and he did the hapless lunge that all players do. It just so happened he did it into a runner. Interference 100%.
@dissipatedtaint
@dissipatedtaint Год назад
I think you can (and the umpire rightfully did) say that the fielder had no chance at making a play on that ball...because it's true. The shortstop also knew that he in fact had no chance at fielding that ball, which is exactly why he tried to be sneaky/crafty and bait the umpire into calling making an interference call, which the SS knew was their only chance of recording an out on the play. Honestly it's a smart play by the SS at any level lower than the majors, but in this case, with the umpire having a full view of the SS trying to bait the interference, in my opinion it's cheap/busch league stuff. As Jomboy's lip-reading shows, the umpire even clearly explained to Martinez precisely what I've just explained, that the fielder had no shot at making that play (no shot at fielding the ball, it was already past him) and therefore, was interfering with the runners path around the bases. Idk why I feel like I'm the only one arguing this side of things cause to me it's pretty obvious the fielder is trying to flop his way into a cheap out. You can even see him start to fall to the ground before he even begins making contact with the runner. So he's either jumping the gun on "selling" the fact of being interfered with, or he's genuinely tripping over his own feet, which is even further evidence of the fact that he had absolutely zero chance of getting to that ball.

Richard & James - to start -- Fielders do not commit interference - they commit obstruction. Offensive players interfere, Defensive players obstruct. Rule book terminology is important. As to the play, the explanation by the umpires sucked. Clearly the SS didn't already make a play as contact happened prior to the ball passing both of them. This is a very tough one, no doubt. IMO the SS wasn't going to get to the ball but he does have a right to attempt to do so and we as umpires cannot assume one way or another. The benefit always goes to the one being offended. Now, upon the hit, the runner started towards 3B, saw the fielder and shifted to his outside to avoid him - but was not successful. At the time the SS begins to move to his left, he is angling in rather than out, then begins to fall before contact - like he's trying to "sell" the INT. I'd be interested in hearing from middle infielders on this point - I would think you want to angle out since it gives you maybe 1/4 second add'l time to get to the ball deeper rather than closer to home. With all of that I believe that if there was any chance of the SS stopping or knocking the ball down, he should get the benefit of the INT call. Obviously I'm using 1/2 speed to watch this, after the fact, which is unfair to the umpires. But I do believe that this was INT and not OBS. Huge call because INT kills the play, R2 is out, R1 is awarded 1B and R3 goes back to 3B. Now it's 2 outs with runners on 1B & 3B vs 2 runs in & 1 out. Another point - umpires place the runners where they would have been had there been no OBS. In this case, even though R2 lost a couple of steps, he was out by probably 25-35 feet. No way he scores without OBS so why is he being awarded home?? Should've put him back on 3B. One last point - Davey asks Dan if he saw it. The reason is that this call was made by the 3B umpire, NOT the 2B umpire. It's not his call, he's too far away and doesn't have the best angle. He certainly can assist with information if the umpires get together but it is NOT his primary calling area. Notice Dan makes no call initially. Also the umpire pointing & awarding home is not Dan, it's not the plate umpire in gear and it certainly isn't the 1B umpire. That leaves 3B. And I believe that is why the umpire statement after the game and Dan's [it appears to me] lackluster discussion with Davey during the argument are trying to back up the incorrect call rather than getting together and getting it right. Not an easy call in real time. Hell - not an easy call watching 20 replays!! Jomboy - sorry for the long reply!

The umps can’t explain this one away. They screwed up the call and they should just be honest about it. You’ll never know if the shortstop could’ve fielded the ball, or not, because the runner ran into the guy! Incredible! In this situation, though, the shortstop should not be able to line up parallel with the runner. He should either be four or five feet back or four or five feet forward of the runner’s running path. The way he lined up just invites an interference call. They seem to be only five feet up away from each other at the start of the play. Plus, the runner did try to avoid the shortstop as much as he could. It was impossible because of the position the shortstop was in, before the play and he had to immediately go to his left to field the ball.

Tbh, I can understand how you’d get this call “wrong” since the defender is nowhere near the ball even after the dive so it kind of seems like obstruction, but he still has to try. He’s getting paid to at least try. He’s not getting paid to stand around. This makes me wonder (after understanding what the 3rd base coach was saying to the runner) if you can get around this issue somehow. Maybe if both people get in each other’s way, there could be a rule for that? Like the man isn’t safe at home but instead safe at third? Some final base -1 type of action upon reviewing the play?

I agree that he wasn't going to get his glove onto that ball, but talking about dubious judgment calls? "Fielders have an obligation to avoid runners unless they are certain they can field the ball" opens up a whole bigass can o' worms, if that's going to be the way we evaluate these things. You can't tell defenders that they're not allowed to make an honest effort to field the ball, and you have to tell them that they can't fuck with baserunners when the ball isn't anywhere near them. This was just a bad application of a correct rule. Sometimes umpires fuck up. It's the human error element of baseball, this is an example of it, and it's okay to say so.

For that rule, if he’s realistically got a shot at the play, then the fielder can go for the ball. In this case, I actually agree he probably wouldnt have caught it, but its still not obstruction per their own wording since he’s making an attempt. The crew chief just reworded their version to back up the bad call. The nonsense he was spinning about that he’d already made an attempt is blatant lying; since the replay clearly shows the fielder and runner colliding before the ball is out of the infield.
@lastdance2099

Ideally there would be no call either way. Clearly the fielder is in the act of attempting to field the ball *and* he a outside shot at it. But I don't think he makes the play even if there's no contact so it seem wrong to award the Nats an out in that situation. But declaring obstruction is even less justified, and Phils were awarded a run without earning it, it was essentially gifted by the umpires.
@Gtrips07

Umpire should have indicated some kind of call and did nothing. If it was obstruction he should have pointed to the contact and verbally said that's obstruction. If he felt there was incidental contact and no call warranted he should have indicated safe and said that's nothing. Poor mechanics. I'm a hockey guy so I'm still trying to figure out the boundaries of the refs in baseball. In hockey, the coaches and refs generally can't occupy the same ground: coaches on bench, refs on skates on the ice. Conversations are extremely short and to the point, generally. And if things are heated, the ref can just skate away. In baseball it seems like there's a lot of back and forth, and here, although I could be out of line saying this, it seems like the ump is provoking DM. What the hell is that? Like the ump is trying to make a power move when DM clearly has a legit beef. I also don't understand how after an ejection happens in baseball (in general) the ejected person has like several minutes to throw a tantrum, kick dirt on the mound, do somersaults all over the field, call their grandma, and eat avocado toast all before leaving the field. I realize the irony of saying that, and being a big fan of a sport where fighting "isn't allowed," yet totally is.
@garygemmell3488
@garygemmell3488 Год назад
There is a dynamic between umpires and managers, coaches, and players that most people do not understand when it comes to baseball. For example, you can scream at the top of your lungs "THAT CALL SUCKED!" right in an umpires face and usually get away with it. But if you yell "YOU SUCK!" in the umpires face, or even from the dugout, you are done. Also, many times managers go out to argue with an umpire with the express purpose of getting ejected. Sometimes it is done to try and fire up the team, other times it is done to show support for a player who was on the short end of a close call made by an umpire. Sometimes the manager is just plain pissed off. Most umpires have a simple rule of thumb when confronted by a manager with an axe to grind. They will allow the manager to blow off his steam and then tell the manager it's over and to return to the dugout. At that point, if the manager refuses to comply and continues to want to argue, he will be ejected. Also, managers will be given more latitude than players, and coaches often times get less latitude than players, but never more. The coach's job is to get players away from umpires before they get ejected for doing or saying something stupid and to stop managers from doing something stupid like physically accosting an umpire after being ejected. They are to be seen and not heard, especially a bench coach. By rule, an ejected manager, coach, or player has to leave the immediate playing area. At the youth levels it is referred to as "out of sight and sound". Failure to do so is supposed to result in forfeiture of the game. Rule 7.03(a)(2,5,and 6) give the home plate umpire that authority. I have never, ever heard of a game being forfeited in the Majors for that reason. I myself have forfeited 3 games at the youth level because of this rule. In each instance I gave the offending person several warnings to leave, in one instance even after I had restarted the game. The game was forfeited when it was clear they were not going to comply. The ironic thing is that in each instance his own fans were yelling at him to leave and were pissed at HIM and not me. Also, be aware that in baseball there are no penalty boxes to serve out penalties and there is only one penalty for arguing with an umpire. The only options an umpire have are to either let the manager, coach, or player remain in the game, or to eject him. There is no in between and the vast majority of umpires at all levels do not like ejecting people. As a result, the average umpire at all levels will take a lot more crap than a hockey referee will. We have no 2, 5, or 10 minute penalties to invoke.

@@bobbygetsbanned6049 a no call results in the runner being called out. In this instance that is fair, because he was never reaching home (i agree that the runner should be out). But that ruling is inconsistent cos what if he was just short by a foot or two? Is he still out? Surely the runner should be given the benefit of the doubt if he is running between the bases. The fielder just planting himself between the runner and third is asking for trouble, and the runner being punished by this means the fielder gets an unfair advantage. In soccer, when a foul is commited a good ref will allow for play to continue and this is called "playing the advantage", if no advantage occurs after the foul then the ref calls the game back to penalise the player. This helps to prevent teams from fouling to get an advantage (not perfect, but better than the binary alternative of calling it immediately or not calling it at all). Should state I am from the uk and I am just going by the rules shown in the video and common sense from what i am seeing on the field.

Umpiring for 10ish years, I'm calling that runner interference most times. By rule, the runner obstructed the fielder from making a play. Albeit a likely impossible play to make, there is still a slim chance shortstop fields the ball and 3rd runner holds or is out at home. In a HS/LittleLeague game, I'd be hesitant and rethink the instance before throwing hands up and calling runner interference. With the ability to review using cameras/others' opinions, that is such a hard call to make, either way a team ends up with the short stick. Its the runners job to know where he is, and where he needs to be if "x" happens or if "y" happens. He knows defense is playing-in to protect home. Ball-off-bat ,the fielder and runner are offset equidistant from the "base path" with vectors in almost opposite directions. Its a knee-jerk reaction for both fielder and runner to avoid that collision given the play at hand. In the mind of the Fielder, fielder has a HOT ball and knows that keeping runner on 3rd is his main priority. Fielder is going to make every effort to stop that ball and has less attention dedicated to the second runner's position....No party is really at fault on this collision. Both players are doing exactly what they should be doing. But by rule, that appears to be Runners Interference.

In my judgment, at normal speed and even more so in slow motion, ss did not have a chance, and therefore would not have the protection of "in the act of fielding". But if you're the umpire and you tell me, in your judgment, ss had a chance then I'm not arguing. It's all about judgment and what you (the umpire) sees.

The fielder was never going to be able to make the play, but the reason for the ruling was absolute BS.

I think one could (maybe) argue (if you squint hard enough) that by the time the fielder makes his first jump and a step or two, it's clear that he is not going to get to the ball, so that may be what they are picking up on as "he has already completed his attempt at the ball" moment. That said, obviously, I do think that a no call would have been a better outcome here.

Finally, someone else agrees with me. Yes, the fielder knew he had no shot at getting to the ball, and thus his only chance at getting at out was to bait the ump into calling interference on the runner. But in this instance the umpire saw exactly what he was trying to do (he even explains that to Martinez in the ip-reading when he says "he has no chance to make a play"). Nats infielder tried to get a cheap out by flopping and trying to deceive the umpire and it backfired. Not only was it the correct call, not only was it a good correct call, it was actually a great, correct call.

His attempt to get the ball is the dive for the ball that created contact when the runner moved in a few steps and kind of obstructed the defender who would’ve had a clear dive toward the ball had he not moved in a few steps.

Would love to see a stop watch on the time it took the ball to hit the bat to when contact was made by the players and how in that .4 seconds or whatever it is the defender had the time to make an attempt at the ball, realize he wasn't going to get it, and then get out of the way of the runner.

I guess they could argue that standing right between the runner and 3rd base was the real issue.
@kyleweir689

@@derfvcderfvc7317 where the runner chooses to stand can't determine where the fielder can set up. I'm sure you can see how that causes issues. The fielder gets "first dibs" on space while they are making a play on the ball, which includes where they set up pre-pitch
@kqatsi

@@kyleweir689 I understand what you're saying, but that's a bad rule. It makes no sense to give the fielder "first dibs" on where they stand pre-pitch, or else they could stand literally directly in front of the runner and block his path to the next base. That's more or less what happened here. I don't know that the fielder did it intentionally, but his positioning made the contact here inevitable.

@@kqatsi no, they can't. If the ball isn't hit at them in that instance the it's interference. And you'd very rarely see a shortstop this far in to begin with

There wasn't a reasonable amount of time between when the ball went in motion towards the defense and once the ball excited the outfield for the defender to know that it was a ball he couldn't have gotten and then somehow get out of the way of the runner. It was reasonable for him to attempt the play even if it meant he obstructed the runners path. Bad call.

So if a player starts playing like crap and doesn’t perform, they can get benched, sent down, dropped…a plethora of things can happen….. where a bad umpire is forever entrenched and can stay in the system. If there was umpire accountability, perhaps we’d have better umpiring and the whole robo ump stuff would be talked about.

MLB can fine umpires and/or punish them with reduced playoff appearances, but it doesn't happen very often. That's mostly thanks to the umpire's union
