here's a WRITTEN RULE: if a team wants to stop playing the game, they can forfeit at any time. more respectful than half-assing it and getting mad at those players who continue to put in an effort which is beyond asinine.

This is baseball at its worst. LaRussa- “Don’t swing 3-0 when we’re up by a bunch”. Players-“but we have incentives in our contracts that make us more money, and the game isn’t over”. Example…Mets were down by 6 going into their last at bat, scored 7 and won the game. A lot of times, divisions are won by 1 or 2 games. Every game is important, or they wouldn’t keep track.

“Respect the game,” means to give it 100% until the game is over. Also, these are professionals. They are grown adults. If they don’t like being scored on, they can do something about it. In fact, they are being paid millions of dollars to do something about it.

When MLB players sign contracts, their pay is largely based on their stats. So one home run can earn them thousands more even if it was in garbage time. Plus, some of the younger/lower paid players on the team's only chance to show what they've got is in garbage time, so to me this unwritten rule is nonsense.

The insane thing about this is that EVEN IF there's an unwritten rule and EVEN IF you agree with the unwritten rule, how do you just take the opponent's side as the manager? I'm not a baseball fan, but I get that baseball is a game of stats, so I get that some numbers can get really thrown off kilter if they just decided to make it a homerun derby, but as a ticket buying fan, I expect both teams to try all the way to the end. My son's hockey team got blown out a couple times last year, playing up a couple times. The other team smashed us, and kept smashing all three periods. My son was the goalie, and I was a bit concerned for his mind space. Even though it didn't wind up affecting him, it annoyed me a bit that they were still driving so hard, but we let it go on and they were fine for the experience afterwards. And that's little kids. These are professional athletes paid to play a child's game! If their feelings get hurt from a drubbing, they have bigger problems as an organization.

Tellin me dude really got in trouble for playing the game. Today, May, 3rd, 2022 is the day i have OFFICIALLY given up on baseball.

I'm a brit I play softball and I've been getting more and more into baseball. The "sportsmanship" is one of the things I find totally different from the sports I'm used to. In every sport I watched growing up you play to the final second its literally ingrained in me keep playing try and get something positive even in defeat. Giving up on the game before then would actually be considered unsporting. I find it bizarre that the unsporting person here is the one that keeps playing. I'm sure they've young pitchers itching for the chance to prove themselves who happily would have taken that game time as well. I do find it interesting that the fans and players seem to agree with that a lot of the time but the old guard enforce it.

As a Twins fan I was mad about that but not because of him swinging, I was more just mad at the Twins themselves being so trash
