That David Crosby actually lived to the age of 81 was a Christmas miracle. The Grim Reaper came knocking for that man so many times that I imagine they were old mates by the time David finally decided to go with him.

Croz repeated his dislike for Morrison to me a few years before he passed. I suggested his true issue was he and Jim both had huge egos and needed to command the room. He laughed and said "You may be right".

I know there are a fair amount of negative comments about Mr. Crosby and his interview. One can't really argue (successfully) with somebody else's experience. Criticism, good or bad, is always more about the writer than the subject. For me, I just always come away from hearing him and feeling a realness to him. He says how he feels and what he thinks. And a lot of the time he comes across clear eyed about his own faults, foibles, and limitations. What a life. He was part of some GREAT music with multiple groupings. He may not have been the most talented of those groups but they sure seemed to want him in their band and (most of the time) their company. I am so glad he existed.

@@EdwardKrzynowek-fx5to I think it was’74 at Jeppesen Stadium in Houston. But come to think of it, Chicago didn’t play that show. Only The Beach Boys opened for CSN&Y. I saw Chicago at that same stadium, but it was for a different show. Excessive amounts of Mary Jane had made my brain insane. Timelines and players tended to get mixed up in my head.

What a joy to see Crosby in an interview...I saw him in the old Euphoria Tavern in Portland, Oregon. He had a voice so pure, I've never heard anything like it... he could sing making the tubes in the amp work to his whim... during 'page 43' he got to a point where his emotions got the best of him and he stopped, and apologised quietly.. he was great, a great voice..thanks David, you gave us a lot..

Great interview. Thank you to whoever posted. I have many takeaways. David Crosby is extraordinarily articulate at capsulating his era and its music. Kudos to Bob Costas for asking thoughtful well researched questions that gently guided Coz to reveal his observations and remembrances of his life to that point. It is amazing that this reminiscence took place over 30 years ago and that Coz was discussing the previous 25+ years from 65 to 91. IMHO Crosby's work with his son James Raymond the last decade or so of his life was among the best of his career. My only regret for him on a personal level is that the rift between him and Nash in the latter part of their lives was never resolved. But Coz was a realist. He did the best he could, though flawed as a human being like all of us. In his case though we have an extraordinary body of work to reflect and appreciate and now this interview to give us even more conrext. RIP. Thank you. ❤️.

Saw CSN in NY in about 81. Awesome show! Fat, balding, except for Nash, but man, did they nail it!!! Every note on the instruments, every harmony, just nailed it!!! Each did a bit solo. When Crosby's bit started, he spoke of the stupidity of hard drugs. My friend with me said: "See that, hard drugs!!" Thereby allowing him to pursue enjoying mucho "herb". 😂

I saw Bob Costas recently on Bill Maher, and a few days later on Michael Smerconish. He was so candid and correct. Remembered that he'd once hosted a show; started looking up old episodes. What a great interviewer. KNOWS HIS SUBJECT MATTER, asks smart questions and then sits back and shuts up, letting the interviewee answer in full. What a refreshing change from today's subject matter ignorant, attention challenged, constantly interrupting idiot "journalists."

What an incredible interview. A "blossoming ego" is a perfect description of David's early years. Friendship is a complicated thing as CSN&Y clearly illustrates. People now can't comprehend how 'young and brash' David Crosby was. "We are still here" because we did some things that were solid and important. Where are those critics now? LOL 'Woodstock' as an event was never equaled. Peace, love, and music. And then what a great song by someone not even there!. Crosby confirms my understanding......Joni Mitchell is a genius.

I always liked Crosby, really fascinated by him and his honesty.... I read his first book... I'm not a big fan of his politics but he had the right to speak how he feels, it is America..... He comes off arrogant at times but it is really pride, he had a lot of talent... As far as Morrison is concerned, I like the Doors (one of my favorite bands of my era) and read all their books, including Jim's book, written by his buddy but the truth is Jim was a real pain, he caused a lot of problems for that band but when he was sober he was a pretty good guy .... This was a great interview..! Love Costas.

my father, a WWII vet, faced with so much change in the mid 1960s, and with a year in the deracinated Southern California milieu, faced with his midlife crisis, and his own adultery, by 1967, did his best, which included joining a fundamendalist cult. But though he chose us, he was left bereft by his family. He actually was possessed once in a while...that is acreal phenomenon in cults. Intellectual and emotional disposession, , it might be better described. Which destroyed our family. Can you imagine the arch that took him? Took my mother who had to leave her religion for love of him? Took my helpless handicapped brother, which for a while, Dad abandoned because he was overwhelmed and could not ask for his parent's or relatives help (ego? Dogma?).? I cannot describe the damage that the "Derrida" intellectual revuolution took our culture to....The intellectual chaos it introduced, the corruption of intellect...i guess I am a Bill Maher sort, just, deeply disconcerted by the decline of intellect since I was 16. Always havevbeen interested in civilizational collapse and change.

I guess I'm glad I don't know anything about Bob Costas's politics. When you absolutely positively have to interview it overnight, Bob Costas always gets the job done. I had the original Deja Vu album in the early 70s--the one with the hard to find brown paper jacket. It was destroyed in a flood. CSNY, or whichever version you call them, remind me of The Beatles in a way: they could shine with their individual talents. But, could also combine them, to make a whole that was bigger than the sum of its parts. It pains me to see so many once-great bands whose members no longer even speak to each other. People change--some more than others. It's an unavoidable fact. But, hats off to the ones who held it together long enough to leave us something great in our record storage cabinets.

It sounds like you are saying CSNY was boring. Could you clarify? If so, I had a similar experience seeing Chicago in concert in 1970. Grand Funk Railroad, who was one of the opening acts for Chicago who was the headliner, stole the show. GFR played with great energy and people started to nod off during Chicago. I was a fan of both bands, but I'll forget the lukewarm reaction for Chicago.

@@stevet7487 I don’t like Grand funk, but I really like Chicago. Saw them in 1970-71. One of my first dates. But yes, it was too much of a drop in intensity. I already liked both bands, and the other thing is the sound was not good enough to hear CSNY clearly enough to enjoy their set. Whoever booked Santana as the opener was really stupid. It should have been another acoustic act, not a high energy electric rock band. And I’m a little puzzled you ask if I was saying it was boring, as I used that exact word.

@@stevet7487 that does sound like a real possibility. And it was the drop in intensity/volume, along with terrible acoustics that made CSNY boring. We all know how intense Santana was. These interviews are so good - It's too bad Costas has become such a d-bag - He is now "woke" and those of us who happen to disagree with his political beliefs are the scourge of society - talk about being out of touch - I asked Bob how was it I , who picks up horse poop for a living , knew most baseball players were jacked on steroids but he didn't - He of course knew all about it - Now he is among the first to cancel them - He sure didn't mind cashing those checks - hilarious

What are you talking about? Costas is far from “woke”. He has always been a common sense guy. Is this because he doesn’t like Trump? Well he doesn’t like Biden much either. Not liking Trump does not make one “woke”.

There is a range of ways in which one can be liberal or woke. I don't know why so many conservatives assume that to be liberal, as I am, means you tick every box. But certainly to be anti-woke without defining what you think woke is, is worse. The US needs a lot more socialism. It is pathetic that that there are multibillionaires while people without their, luck, inheritance, or ruthlessness are on 7.25 minimum wage. You will find very few people here in partly socialist Canada who'd give up health care and we simply don;t have either the huge "bad areas of town" in any of our cities of several millions and nor have we the shocking number of impressioned, per capita or total. Same thing in Europe. They like their taxes because they like their safe cities, public transportation, civilized behaviour, and health care.

Delusional David. Always thought he was all that. He was a good harmony singer who hooked his star to good musicians.
@donniemoder1466
@donniemoder1466 4 месяца назад
Basically, that is true. And he hooked himself to good songwriters too. His harmony was essential but he was not much of a lead singer in those groups. Nor was he a brilliant guitar player. I admire his working hard in his last act and putting out some good music then and working on himself then too to be good to others.

Don't think much of him as a person. Read his two bios. Like a lot of stars the person is not as good as the act. But his vocals were amongst the best in the history of rock and roll. He doesn't have a lot of songs as maybe drugs and the struggle to perform limited quality production. But his voice on 4 Way Street live album started me on my love of rock at 10-12 years old. My sister left it around and it captivated me on my mother's Capehart stereo Lee Shore, Triad beautiful. I refuse to go to anymore over the hill rock acts but after hearing David's voice on you tube last few years, I made a mistake. I should of seen him sing he never lost his voice.
