What a very pleasant surprise this was to find on yt. Was not expecting to see this wad unprompted on yt. You pretty much hit every "remark" and "comment" right on the target. Blatantly inspired by my house.wad. Originally, the plan was to make this wad as a parody and a joke. But i quickly realized how hard writing comedy is. So i just said eh, frick it. Ill throw my own life experiences, mixed with whatever chubzdoomer can make yt tutorial about into as much as i can. And show off my ability to learn a random skill in a short amount of time. At the beginning of the video, you notice how terrible the furniture looks. Because at that time, i had never even heard of 3D floors. Then you get to the submarine part, with the diner tables and chairs, and those ovens in the kitchen... IVE NEVER BEEN MORE PROUD OF MY CREATION THAN THE OVEN. And yes, its not anywhere near done. I expect It'll be fone some time in the next 10 months, maybe. I hope. Thank u all in doomworld for support, and blah blah blah ive been talking for too damn long.
I absolutely can relate to your mapping abilities not being able to match your lofty ambitions. Still a very enjoyable creation, your sense of humor isn't lost on me.
@@danem2215thanx for seeing the humor. I didn't think anyone would like the slim humor aspects. I should get back to the roots and actually try and make it funnier
I definitely laughed at the "stop looking for secrets" message in the map. You did a pretty good job and learned quite a bit pretty quickly. Those ovens are definitely something to be proud of!
3:48 Can currently relate - as soon as I noticed the book in my library's catalogue, I immediately reserved a copy.. only to find I'm third in my county in the queue for it. Whether or not it's _because_ of MyHouse is anyone's guess. As for the map, even if this is a "first map" (let's face it: Thanks to MyHouse, you never know these days), this very much feels like the creator had their tongue firmly in their cheek, and I can vibe with that. Though obvious inspiration aside, I can't help but think that 6:10 takes cues from "-And He Built a Crooked House-" by Robert Heinlein... now there's a Doom WAD someone should adapt.
@@zardoz8023 💀 did I forget to mention its not anywhere near done? Your judging this map, when it's only my second ever doom wad. Chill bro. The wad will improve over time
I slightly miss the clacky keyboard, although only once its absence was pointed out. Good luck on finding House of Leaves. The full colour version is far too expensive/hard to find for me so I just got the cheap b&w version. Aside from the red text, I don't know how much I'm missing out on...
a friend linked me to your myhouse video (not even knowing I had already did my own vid on it) and I really like your vibe while checking out a map! Being able to share you appreciation of different aspects of creativity that goes into a map is wonderful to get to hear
Definitely looks like a next-to first map, but there's some really interesting usage of line defs and tricks for such a "beginner made" level. Considering my house came first, and this is clearly biting off of the same pie, I'm not sure how I feel about it. It looks half-way decent but maybe a little try-hard/trying to recapture the same lightning in a bottle as my-house, which the novelty for that map came from the fact that the map materialized out of nowhere one day. My house felt like it always had a direction it was going in while twisting the world around you and this just seems like a mish-mash of neat tricks with no real direction. Curious to see how it changes over time, and it's not a terrible effort, but it's borrowing a little too hard/blatantly from my house, imho. Still pretty cool, and towards the end of this video it feels like the author is either outright lying about it being an early map effort, or they're learning a lot of stuff really quickly and implementing it. (tables, beds, floor portals, etc.)
Well, ngl, i agree with you on many aspects, but tbh i dont see anything wrong with borrowing the idea. It does indeed look a bit try hard but was most likely a proof of concept that may be developed further. Lets also not forget that myhouse.wad is still something that was inspired by house of leaves
Thing is, My House' central "trick" is one that could easily be implemented in any other context. It's basically just setting the player up with a simple and mundane task (by Doom standards), and only veering into madness if the player strays off the path and starts exploring. If the player focused solely on finding the keys needed to open the exit gate, they could "finish" the map in a few minutes, and come away thinking the map was nothing special. But it's the player's greed for more items, or their curiosity/suspicion about what else the house might have going on, that leads them to explore further. Which is what causes them to trip the triggers that lock them into the crazy part of the map. It's actually a really fun and simple way to mess with player psychology. The weirdest parts of the map would never be found by an incurious player. But the weirdest parts are also the most interesting, so once a curious player stumbles across them, they're naturally going to keep digging, and the map just keeps rewarding their curiosity with an ever-deepening mystery. And within the map's horror theming, it presents the player as their own worst enemy. If they hadn't been so curious, none of the wild shit they went through would have happened. In a sense, all the horror is their own fault.
If you’re still looking for a decent small keyboard, you should try an original GMMK compact. Modding it yourself might be the best option for your needs, and the Wuque Studio silent linear and silent tactile switches are both great options. The Redragon Diti might also be right up your alley since it’s hot swap too, that’d be great with the Wuque silent switches.
My hovel My cabin My castle My palace My dorm My tent My spire My lair ~~I've been working on a mansion-themed wad for a short few months. Not much non-euclidean nonsense in it tho. Dunno if I'll ever finish it.~~
So this is like 50th time watching this now, and im thinking of what to put into another wad im working on that takes itself more seriously than this one does. The idea that the main character talks in their head, or rather, to know what they're thinking you'd have to look in udb to read their thoughts
I've settled on a name and concept. Troxler.wad. You work in a hotel... that's all you get to know though as literally saying anything else would be giving away too much
4:19 You're not a fan of text being used for the character talking to themselves? There are times where it doesn't work, but Disco Elysium does an amazing job looking into the psychology and the different parts of your character's mind saying different things and reacting in different ways. In fact, if certain stats are too high, they can backfire (eg. empathy too high can make your character mentally break down and lose morale for seeing a plastic bag on the ground). Granted, it is also voice acted - which helps with delivery.
even though they're part of your character, they act as their own characters. that's a crucial distinction. what david is criticising is the idea that the player should never be Told How To Feel by the character 'thinking' something: you don't need to have the character react FOR a player.
It was a Dell Quietkey, the world’s most inaccurately named keyboard! Part of it is that I also put some time into new microphone positioning and treating the audio to dampen the keystrokes.
@@DavidXNewton yeah! I have one of those somewhere :) I really like Vortex keyboards since they're modern but not "gamer" and if you want to build one KBDFans is a great place to look for a DIY kit.
let me give you an idea for a my house like wad: do the descent to madness already established stuff and killing daemons but add a twist in the end realizing that the daemons from hell you had killed was actually your family and neighbors...
I swear one of these days we will get a myhouse or myroom.wad and it'll literally just be someone's house or room recreated in Doom without any House of Leaves influence at all XD
