@@visearms5774 Compared to today it's not even close. Programmers make things and people sound good today. So you think Jimmy Page only stole his music and didn't create it? He didn't even write songs for commercial success. Zep songs were too long for radio. Listen to Physical Graffiti and tell me who today could make that album? Everyone is influenced by someone else. Led Zeppelin was no different. But your example is pathetic.
As a DJ in the 80's, I played this song at countless weddings and knew it well. One late evening, I was teaching my teenaged daughter some songs on the keyboard. My wife had gone to bed, and gets up for nothing once she's tucked in. As I played "If", I revealed to my daughter that when I played this song in college it was guaranteed to attract girls to the piano from nowhere, like magic! As if on cue, my wife walked sleepily into the living room in her pj's, because she had heard the song, and my daughter and I had a good-natured laugh at its enduring power, all these years later! lol :-)
I turn 78 in Aug and agree music of the 70's was and still is very special. In this crazy world of today we could surely use a huge serving of Bread. I loved the rock music of the 70's but beautiful songs have and always will have a place in my heart.
Saw him interviewed on "The Mike Douglas Show" way back when. He said he sat down at the kitchen table one night and this song came out of him in about 20 minutes. Skills like that are a true gift from God.
I'd worked on analog recording for a while and I can confirm that we can still tune a bit on the vocals on tape. But I can't deny the artists in those generations are something else.
This is why I don’t listen to today’s music. I don’t even care to watch the Grammys anymore. My radio is on the oldies station and god help whoever changes my station.
Ozzie Quinones ...I gave up pop music back in the mid seventies, but I was always aware of all the great music that was avaiable out in the big world - classical, jazz, world music. It's endless really. Anything but pop for me now, but I do revisit the past every so often like I did here. Cheers!
I was 9 years old when I first heard this song. Brings back a flood of memories. Every time I hear this song I see my 9 year old self sitting under a shady tree daydreaming of a future life with a love of my life. The dream came true and have been happily married for 3 decades and have 2 adult daughters. There were times when “my love for life would run dry” and yes every time it happens my love would “pour herself” on me. Soon we are going to reach the twilight but I’m ok with it knowing that we’re going to be hand in hand facing it while looking back at the 9 year old daydreamer under a shady tree, smiling at each other.
This beautiful song was played at my husband's Memorial service while pictures of us over the years was shown. What a wonderful way to send him off and still be able to show the love we shared.
For those who just know this song❤️ Lyrics: If a picture paints a thousand words, Then why can't I paint you? The words will never show the you I've come to know. If a face could launch a thousand ships, Then where am I to go? There's no one home but you, You're all that's left me too. And when my love for life is running dry, You come and pour yourself on me. If a man could be two places at one time, I'd be with you. Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way. If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die, I'd spend the end with you. And when the world was through, Then one by one the stars would all go out, Then you and I would simply fly away…
At 70 years old I grew up with this beautiful and soulful music . Modern music leaves me cold and confused.. music is really poetry put to song and that is where it should remain.
i've often wondered why i didn't like the songs today, im 21 and instead of listening to mainstream songs today which is mostly about sex, i listen to this.i love the old songs. they are timeless elegant and full of emotion.i dont care if they call me weird or anything. i wish the music industry today can write songs like this again.
That's great! I am 47 and grew up in the 70s and remember these songs well. There are great artists today, but the vocals of The Carpenters, Dan Fogelberg, and James Taylor can't be beat. Love the vocals of Robert Palmer, Phil Collins, and Sting on the flip side too!
Brack i definitely agree! i've listened to the carpenters and dan fogelberg and they are just simply phenomenal! im jotting down the artists you mentioned so i can listen to them! Thank you!
It's great that you appreciate this music. I saw James Taylor at the Nutter Center in Dayton back in July - phenomenal as always!! If you get a chance, check out "Par Avion" by Mike Rutherford from Genesis. Amazing...
"If" If a picture paints a thousand words Then why can't I paint you? The words will never show The you I've come to know If a face could launch a thousand ships Then where am I to go? There's no one home but you You're all that's left me too And when my love for life is running dry You come and pour yourself on me If a man could be two places at one time I'd be with you Tomorrow and today Beside you all the way If the world should stop revolving Spinning slowly down to die I'd spend the end with you And when the world was through Then one by one the stars would all go out Then you and I would simply fly away
i am born in 2005 but i really love listening to oldies songs, im thankful that i grew up with my uncle who is 76 yrs old now, i grew up with him, listening to old song every morning. I miss the feeling of listening to this kind of songs while im making a coffee for my uncle every 5 or 6 am in the morning:)
My best friend would sing this song before he passed from this life. This was almost hard for me to listen to for the flood of memories that came back. Thank you David Gates.
+Genesis Torres You can choose to listen to the good stuff, it's still here. Check out the group Steely Dan too, it's super classy - try "Can't Buy A Thrill" or "The Royal Scam".
Amazing live...when I 15 years old,my mp3 have this song in it,in faraway small city in China, everyday I step on step go to school, everytime,I will listen to if,sunny day or rainy day, forever wonderful memoris.
If theres a Time Machine, I am going back to the 70s and onto the 80s. Those were seriously very lovely and memorable times. Life was simple, People were simple, Music was simple. But everything was just SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL.
Hell yes. He's always been up there among my favorite male vocalists. There is something unique about the way he sings high notes, with no effort at all and with exactly the same color that he sings lower notes.

Music of 70's will really melt your heart: its full of meaning and sincerity and the choices of words or lyrics are just brilliant I love Bread forever. David didn't need to belt it out. His soothing voice and the soft plucking of the guitar and the melody always blended perfectly well
This has to be one of my favorite songs of all time. Its lyrics, melody, even the guitar playing can never be compared to songs that are written today. David Gates is an underrated guitarist and musician. He has contributed so much in the music industry and it makes me sad that not a lot of people know that.
The first time I learned to play the so called broken chords in a guitar is all from the songs of the Bread way back in the mid 60's before I focus on the ingenuity of the Beatles musical creation.
I often wondered if Bread/Gates could pull this song off "live"... Got my answer. I always loved this song as a kid in high school yet would never admit it to my buddies (all hard rockers).
+HighwayPatrol3 Recently ? As far as I am aware he retired from the industry a decade ago and hasn't performed live since 2006. He now lives a private rural life up in Washington State...
My husband just tagged me on Facebook, with this video (he dedicated it to me). We met in the 7th grade, in 1982. We were friends, all throughout junior high school and high school. After H.S. graduation, we went our separate ways and made our own lives. 17 years later, I was looking through the White Pages, searching for the phone number of a restaurant, I wanted to place a take-out order with. I stumbled across his name... called him out of the blue. Ten months later, we were married and we're now going on our 15th wedding anniversary. We were blessed to find one another, at the perfect time. Thanks for the video. :)
Timeless....Im so glad that I grew up in this era..... I love music so much it brings tears to my eyes.... As I get older I see how much easier life was back in the day... People now days are so mean.....Make me sad...
...because today's culture has sunk into full worship of self, sex, money and fame, leaving today's contemporary generations fully out of touch with their humanity. Unable, or even afraid, to relate to what's real within.
@@take942 I love this song simply because I grew up with this song. It was part of my teenage life. Whenever I hear the song, it reminds me of my past. It's like an old photograph or a written diary that invokes nostalgia, a warm homesick feeling, and a good feeling we remembered with someone we missed. My daughter, who is 35 years younger, loved her old songs. Songs she used to listen to in her teen and early twenties. She said the same thing you said. Today's music is full of bullshit. There is nothing to relate to. Today's generation lacks the soul to appreciate fine music. Every generation could only enjoy their good old songs. Songs that they heard when they were young, especially in their teenage and college years. They grew up with those songs, and the songs became part of the past life. That old melody harmonizes well with their whole being. Anything else just doesn't jive. All the contemporary musics which you hated so much right now shall one day become the golden oldies for those who are now teenagers or college students. Have a good day, Sirs and Madams.
@@davidlow6539 Yours is a wonderful heartfelt comment that I appreciate and can relate to. I just wanted to respectfully address a point you made towards the end of your comment. My previously written critique of today's pop music does not mean that I hate it. It is just that I do not believe that today's pop music will be the great and timeless "golden oldies" in the distant future the way yesterday's pop music is. It has nothing to do with the idea that every generation feels their music is better than the previous generation's music. Generally, pop music today is a product of today's souless and superficial recording industry and a culture driven by the desire to make a quick buck combined with the immature need to become famous overnight without having to take the arduous "journey" to get there. The soulfulness in music, or any art form, comes from the singer, writer, artist, recording engineer, etc. having taken that arduous journey to get to the place of authentically expressing themselves through their own particular creative art form. That is why yesterday's music, from the Renaissance up through the 1980's or so, is generally timeless and resonates within our own souls. That is because deep inside us, we can relate to the music and lyrics on a soul level. So the music feels timeless because our souls are timeless. Back in the 1990's my wife's art teacher at the Art Students League of New York in NYC, and a renowned artist as well, once wisely stated about art and painting and how it affects the viewer, "Art is not about the surface of the canvas. It is about the depth of the artist." BTW, I have always loved the songs by Bread since they were first released. So very soulful.
When I was 18 l met a beautiful girl, and lt was love at first sight… but she had already a boyfriend, and it was their song. So as I was a guitar player, I studied this song to get into her heart…. But I failed. Years passed and now I am a lucky husband and she married another man, and she is mother of a beautiful boy, too, rising a wonderful family……but every time I hear this song a little tear of blood drop from my heart, because I will never ever forget that impossible love… …then you and I would simply fly away…
What a song, goes deep into my heart, my soul, and my body. Thank you Mr Gates for all your perfect melody. Yours for ever. Silvia. God bless... 🌹😘🙏🏻💋💋
❤Retro greetings from coastal Mississippi. This is my favourite song of Bread....hence David. His voice has such emotions , you want to smile, reflect and cry all at the same time. Have a slice of bread, you will enjoy the whole loaf😂🎉
Ive been using this song to get dirt out of my eyes for 45 years. The tears just spray out everytime! David is so good he must be from the Planet Heartfelt.
Definitely one of the ten best voices of all time. Talk about perfect pitch and clarity - and as close to the studio version as one could hope for. Don't hear songs like this any more....or a voice.
I would add to that - an underrated guitarist as well, those are difficult chords on a guitar - especially those barr chords on a steel sting and to be so articulate with the finger picking - he makes it look easy - its not.
Utterly! And one by one, the stars would all go out. And you and I would simply fly away! When have you heard such profound words in a song lately! So agree with you.
My Favourite Song, used to listen to this song on vinyl records, during My Teen years, Brings back many many tearful memories, This song will Forever remain in My Heart.❤❤❤
This is my all time favorite song. When I hear Mr. Gates sing this it makes me dream of one particular girl I would give anything to spend the rest of my life with, but, it will never happen. So, all I can do is dream in silent sorrow for something that will never be.... SAD!
I thought Bread's song "Everything I Own" was a weird love song until I heard David Gates explain that the song was written for his dad who passed away just before Gates made it big in music.
@J OneLife Is that supposed to be comforting? You don't know this man's story and what separated him from his girl. Unless she passed away, never rule out a second chance.
New rule: You can't end a statement with the word ....SAD! because people will think of Trump, or worse, that you LIKE Trump. Which, if you do, you honestly don't deserve happiness in your life.
