That was my commute for 8 years - used to listen to Led Zeppelin's Kashmir on the train when the waves were like that - perfect! Wonderful piece of railway.
My family had a beach hut at Coryton Cove,Dawlish and that was washed away in a similar storm a few years previous. This video brings back memories. For more shots of Dawlish,in better weather conditions, with a little magic thrown in , log in to - Tony Everest - Kinetic Energy Magic
I was there this summer!.. the weather was nice and i even saw a pice of the red arrows on our last day there, and the vulcan bomber of course:þ miss it
Looks very similar to the storm or winter blizzard waves kicked-up on Lakes Superior and Ontario etc. Good video here. There are a large number of videos of storms on the Cornish and Suusex coasts, and on the Great Lakes. Search for 'Big Ass Waves', 'Lake Superior Storm', 'Lake Superior Winter Storm', Unsalted Outtake #3 - Whitefish Point Inspiration', 'Lake Ontario Wind Storm', etc. You will enjoy them. Thanx for the video.
Hi! I remember what it was like on Thursday 17th April 2008, as I was on a train on that day, but I must admit I was not in Dawlish then, but I was travelling on a 4:15pm "Cross Country" train between Paignton and Torquay that afternoon and I saw some waves, and also remember that even though Easter was very early that year, it was still during school holidays for many schools.
Go back to the mid 19th Century and tell an engineering genius by the name of Isambard Kingdom Brunel that he's mad! I'm sure he was told this many, many times, but it didn't sop him! He'd probably agree with you, laugh, puff on his cigar, and say "Watch this!" - build the impossible!!!
WOW!!! Now that's what I call a train wash!!....mmmm I bet that sea water can't be doing the trains much good.Didn't a Voyager once fail here because of the stormy sea conditions?? Any way thank you for sharing this with us all.Great video.Cheers
Luckily the line has been reopened, but summer 2014 is predicted to be very cold wet and stormy so how long the rest of the line will last is down to luck. I'm writing this on a cold wet dark miserable Easter Sunday :(
I took a journey from Dumaguete City Negros Philippines to Penzance once Dumaguete ferry to cebu 6hr bus trip to cebu city 5.5 hr flight to singapore 13hr flight from singapore to london train from paddington to penzance my journey was terminated at...St Erth! line closed waves on track! ONLY IN THE UK!!!!
Nice video but what the hell is the Voyager (220) doing there? I tough they are forbiden to cross in area with severe storms because sea water will cause there electronics to completely shut down. Weird, maybe they fixed the problem or they just try to be luky :)
