cutback to grow a new leader heading towards an apex one day. repotted it into something smaller and started working the roots back. i plan on pinching the growing tips off the new shoots after they extended a little to try an shorten the internodes on the future branches before the new shoots even harden off all the way.

lol dude you are CERTAINLY NOT PLAYIN!! Holy crap man, I think I said "woooOOOAA!!" about three times watching this. Those things are beasts, eh? Looks great, can't wait to see the progress.

@@DarthMasiah I hope you snipped a bunch of cuttings from that massive branch...I tried it last year and it worked pretty well (check out my cuttings video if you have a sec). The one in my yard is almost identical in size to what yours was, and since i'm moving, well...that shit's coming with me! Good to see they can take a beating, because mine most certainly will!

@@BostonBonsaiIdiot i actually did take some cuttings. i don't know what I'm going to do with them yet. there's probably around 30 of them in a mug of water on a heat mat sitting on my desk still. the buds are slowly opening. i was kinda wondering if they'll just root in water. I'll throw them in some bonsai soil soon and put them in a plastic tote under the table outside. high humidity is good like you did in your video.

Nice man! I got a decent sized one from local nursery and deciding how much roots i can remove as theyre all twisted in curled around pot. Now lookn at yours n what time to do it, these can handle quite a prune. Thanks again for the vid.

@@DarthMasiah i have 3 year old about 4feet tall (1,2meter) D. redwood that is starting to wakeup from dormancy, i need to chop it but im wondering how low do i dare to cut it... First branch is about 4inch up in the trunk. Do you think these trees could survive as drastic chop as that?
@DarthMasiah
@DarthMasiah 2 года назад
@@janisalo1900 I've chopped this one down from 5' to 1' before and it didn't skip a beat. if it's healthy it should put out new shoots around the chop point at least. try chopping halfway to your goal and see how it responds, and next year do it again.

@@janisalo1900 oh yeah. i had clipped off a bunch of shoots for cuttings. i read they do good if taken before they wake up in spring, as I've failed to root may and june cuttings.
