My uncle was a big name engine builder and tuner in our area from the 70s through the 2000s. He built many winning setups in heads up, index, and bracket racing. When turbos, superchargers, and fuel injection started getting big he always said a good old carburetor with nitrous setup would last forever. He's passed away now and everytime I see someone explaining things a carburetor is good for or can do that fuel injection can't it makes me smile. Sure, big turbos with a big motor and EFI are what everyone wants, but a damn good carburetor and nitrous setup can still compete. He was a carburetor and engine guru, something you don't see near as much of. Love the content and tech talk!!

Hmmm 🤔🤔🤔 As for the trust bearing issue. Im DEFINITELY on the same page with the possibility of a ground issue. Ive seen ground issues in semi trucks (Diesel Engines) do some crazy things that you wouldn't ever think could happen. However I also go back to where you pointed out previously that the right side ladder bar mount looks as if its been repaired. Instantly with a Corvette (very low ground clearance) I think someone may have run it up over a curb or into a ditch and snagged a rock or a culvert and something is bent from mild to significantly. And that can throw the geometry off just enough over time (you said it looked like a previous long term issue with the seal) to eat away at the thrust bearing. Yet not enough to Instantly gernade the bottom end of this engine. Obviously there's a few things that could be causing this. Sir... You have me hooked to this series. And your carb knowledge is STRONG. You and Mr Bill Sr. @OldMansGarage could do a carb build off series.And teach us all a thing or 5. Btw, I absolutely RESPECT the hell out of you for the "Have a Fire Extinguisher with you" And a way to get to the car quickly (Your dirt bike) if needed to be with said Extinguisher. Safety is something a lot of people forget about as this testing takes place. Sir, You have gained a lifetime of my RESPECT for this safety common sense. 🙏🙏🙏. Worked in a trans shop and it’s very possible! (common on Ford 6.0 diesels with the 5r110 trans)and it usually wipes the pump bushing in the trans and converter hub into the pump(hint check that too!) we usually ground the starter bolt, the block, the trans, frame, at different points to the bare metal on the frame and “ls” stuff on the heads like you said. Keep the content rolling.

Very common on the 6.0 ford a lot of people don’t realize how important grounds are
@standonit20
@standonit20 2 года назад
As a transmission guy myself, if you think the converter is balooning, drop the trans pan and look for metal. If the converter pushed the pump gears into the pump housing when balooning, you'll play machine shop in the pump, see it in the pan, and the trans wont be making too many more passes. Thats not something a pump can take time and time again. Clearances will change and pressures will drop which will slip and burn clutches

Bad grounds can cause thrust bearing failure. Because everytime you start the car. The starter is going to hunt for a ground, and find the easiest path to travel. Since the starters bolted to the block. Every time the bendix engages the flexplate. That's bolted to the back of the crack. Ground will always travel the path of least resistance, and that's through the crank, through the thrust bearing, flexplate and finally the starter. Evey time the car gets fired off.

If the 1st engine builder would have just checked the crank end play they would have realized it was a problem. Couple grand down the drain. Good luck figuring it out guys....

Yass. Thank you for this! Made my midsummer weekend and then some. :) Now, to the problem: Chassis flex. Even if the car sits fully balanced, when the old ladder bar chassis gets loaded, it twists and unloads the right tire. It can be adjusted to a point, but it will only get worse due to fatique of the metal. Only plating the motor won't fix it, it just moves more torque to the chassis and crooks it further. If there is no ground leads, the spark jumps inside the engine where is enough gap to create spark. But, the thrust bearing issue is not completely spark related, the flexing chassis squeezes the running gear together, and thrust bearings are there to even the load. A full funny car cage/chassis is not just a safety thing. it is also a tuning thing, to make the car more stable and responsive to shock adjustments. You can also use square tubing for main rails to keep it "stock", if that is still a thing.

I have never heard of it causing such an issue personally, but electricity even in lower amperages can be very destructive over time. Not just because some salesman at Jeggs or Summit tried to sell you something you where not sure you needed. This is PROVEN information from a guy thats been HUGELY SUCCESSFUL in what he does. If you try to buy this knowledge, you'd go broke fast. And he's willing to share it for FREE with us. You don't see this in all industries and with all people. Chief, thank you for this video. I knew the gist of carbs and how they function, but I won't pretend that I could fix, work or tune them to save my life. I learned more in this video, the greatest description of why and how, no cap, of carbs than every video I've ever watched. You're a phenomenal teacher!! That statement doesn't even justify how good you are at explaining sh!t. I'm pretty sure if you started a teaching channel explaining different parts, their use, what works, what doesn't, etc it would probably be the #1 learning channel for car guys. These vlogs are great. Probably the most informative out there. Getting into all the details is great. After tuning both carb and fuel injection, I'll still go to FI all day. A carb is a controlled toilet flush. The toilet uses vacuum to work properly also. Tourqe converter is the issue in my opinion. Probably time for a new one.
@Headsup9550
@Headsup9550 2 года назад
A carb is far from a controlled toilet flush. That's just what people say who can't tune a carb. If there was as much effort put into efi as there has been carbs throughout the years, it would be even better than it is. There is a lot of room for improvement even on race efi systems. They're awesome but could be better. Still, there is no denying that a carburetor is a testament to far the human mind has evolved, they're amazing!
@2001camaro10
@2001camaro10 2 года назад
I would say efi is a testament to how far innovation has taken us. Show me a carb that you can tune individual cylinders? I don't believe it exists. I have had success with carb and efi but going eithether nitrous or boost, I'll stick with efi.
@Headsup9550
@Headsup9550 2 года назад
@@2001camaro10 you're comparing an analog device from the 1920's to modern electronics. I'm an efi guy myself, I didn't say carbs are superior, I said that carbs work great. This idea that they are a "controlled vacuum leak" or whatever else that someone heard someone else say 20 years ago that they think makes them look smart. For that matter, the IAC of an efi system is the same, but usually the real vacuum leaks are present on the guy's car who sucks at carb tuning! Obviously electronic spark control is light years ahead of a vacuum advance too, but it doesn't mean you can't make simple stuff work. A carb is way further advanced than a distributor will ever be, so maybe a bad analogy..

Killer video, they just keep getting better. I had a bone stock c4 corvette at the dealer back in the day that killed all the bearings and the car was almost new, when I replaced the engine under warranty the ground wire wasn't connected to the block, it was laying against it and no bolt there. Most likely during being assembled it was missed. That was the theory in the shop that the engine was trying to ground itself through the engine and that the bearings where the fuse since their so much thinner compared to anything else. Obviously we couldn't verify that but it seemed plausible. I also knocked the thrust out of my turbo LS mustang after 3 passes from a converter that was ballooning out because it was not correct for my combo. Swapped out the crank and bearings, put a Ptc turbo ls specific converter in it and 100s of passes later no problems at all. I love that you put theories out there and get us thinking because it's not always black and white. 💪

Instead of drilling the plates, I tried the set screw in the bottom of the base plate that allowed me to crack the secondary blades. I then was able to close up the primary blades and get my idle mixture screws to do something.

Like most of these comments, the technical aspects and presentation format that you guys provide is stellar. I have a very similar, but different, situation and would like to compare notes and strategies/goals. For the past 3 or 4 years my project has been a C3, 68 Vette. Mine is a bit more of a street car - powered by a 632 on E 85 with a Holly EFI (sorry), 4L80E with lock up. Ridetech front A arms and coil over shocks, Redetech coil overs in rear with Tom’s Vette center section, inboard/outboard spindles and 1/2 shafts, weighs 3,400# full of fuel and with driver. Car runs very consistent 6.0’s with a MT Street ET drag radial. We have nitrous plumbed in the intake, but have not have not dedicated to tuning the nitrous, due to all the reasons that you have defined in past videos.

It could absolutely be a possibility from a past experience with a 90s Ford explorer it had no engine grounds and welded the pilot bushing to the pilot shaft and trans pump which inturn caused catastrophic trans failure the first time it happened I didn't look at anything figured just a coincidence the second time doing all the work made me question why it was happening and bingo no engine ground grounded it sold it 3yrs latter still running good

Generally no grounds on the motor lead to premature radiator failure, ground is found through water then radiator and into core support. Wouldn’t say its “common” but I see it with customer cars that were built by the owners or shops that didn’t have the knowledge.
