As a black male, I love seeing other black men/women in the medical field! I will be attending dental school this Fall! I want to shadow hygienists to see how they are treated by dentists and how I can apply this to my own practice in the future.

Im just starting my last semester of dental hygiene school and thinking about and studying for boards is so overwhelming but this gives me motivation that when i graduate i will find the right office and love my job!

I’ve wanted to go to dental school my whole life. I just graduate college & got my first full-time dental assistant job. I love it!!!! Hey girl! I’m so glad your job search is going well. Just an FYI, it is legal to train a dental assistant on the job but they are NOT allowed to take X-rays or do anything like coronal polishing, sealants, etc. Just assisting. They can sit for the DANB exam after 2 years of on the job training :)

In Sweden we are not allowed to have long, polished nails while working at a dental clinic and we change working clothes every day( they have a washing machine at the clinic).

I recently moved to Atlanta and that's the first thing that stood out to me...the diversity! In the field I'm in, I never seen this many BLACK directors, VPs & etc...I love that.

And I love how you are going into these interviews and letting it be known that you are the offer and you are deciding who is good enough for you! That's so important and not to be on some exalted and higher than thou attitude but that you aren't going to accept something that doesn't match your value or worth. That first and second job sounds nice especially the first one. Can't wait to see what's next!

In New Zealand, to become a dental Asistant, you do train on the job just like you would to become a builder. It is the norm here, im currently a DA planning on going to uni to study OHT next year. I understand it may seem random but its not like you would go to uni just to learn to be a DA when it really is a train on the job type of job. im not sure what its like in the States but here in New Zealand we do just train on the job as DAs. :D x

You’re so right about providing quality over quantity. Before the pandemic, I worked at a non profit that would go to different school sites each day to provide services. It was a team of three: me(admin), the DA, and hygienist. I liked it until it became all about numbers. The hygienists would compete among themselves who could see the most patients. It sucked for me because I was the one having to go find patients throughout the school and running two schedules for two hygienists. When we did sealants it was even worse. Those days I had like 25 patients to manage myself.

The working interview is cool I wish more jobs offered it!! Loved the vlog!!👏🏾👏🏾

Just wanted to let you know you are my go to channel for interest in hygiene and just wanted to let you know after months and months of searching I had gotten hired as a dental assistant to mostly do the sterilization and breaking down rooms to get my foot in the door! im so excited and will be applying for dental hygiene this may! I don't know if seeing a Black female Dental Hygienist is uncommon in Atlanta but in NYC, it would b nice to see more African-Americans in that field! You are right, the majority of the Dental Hygienist that you will find are not Black!
