The answer is Yes. When you’re 30 and looking to get out of retail or restaurant you’ll regret that you aren’t getting paid $60/hr to $100/hr and should’ve become an apprentice sooner. Learn a trade work 5-10 years then go work for yourself. That’s what I did and many others do as well.
i started my electrician apprenticeship at 24 only regret is not doing sooner. i did security from 18 - 24 all those years wasted smh. im 28 now making 6 figures on a slow year lol
I'm at $125/hr for hvac/ maintenance tech. I was offered a 1099 job and if I would cross train to work on plumbing and electrian work so trades apprintenceship works really well
Awesome! I went through an Electrical Apprenticeship from 1981-1985. I worked as an Apprentice, Journeyman, City Inspector, City Code Investigator an Apprentice Instructor and finally I was the Training Director of an Apprenticeship school. There are so many things you can do as a licensed Electrician!!! Be patient, listen and work hard! The sky is the limit!!! BE SAFE,GOD BLESS!🇺🇸🙏❤
hey man, you seem experienced. im 16 and im thinking of becoming an electrician. i wanna know what it's like being one (difficulty, pay, etc...) it'd be great if you gave me some insight to it man. thanks!
If you went through an electrical apprenticeship in 1981 you should be a "master electrician" by now not a journeyman. You should have a master's card.
@@robd1859 you dont just get your masters when you hit the required time... obtaining your masters license has different requirements for different places.
I'm an electrician. I like the mix of using my mind and my body. The variety of different job locations and different work keeps from getting monotonous. At about the 10 year I was confident enough to go on my own and be my own boss. I stay plenty busy. I turn down a lot of work.
Jesus Loves you Matthew 11:28 come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. As well as Romans 6:23 for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God (Jesus who died on the cross for our sins) is eternal life. As long as you put your faith and trust in Him.😊!!
I’m an apprentice and it was interesting watching this, felt lonely when I picked sparking because none of my mates did it, but I released that I’m not the only one, all the best in the future big man
@@louislevine3028 A person in my class was working for a company in Belfast and got me in and I’ve been working for them for over a year and a half. With COVID it has affected a lot of trades but if dig deep enough u will find an employer. Ask friends, family or anyone who is doing a trade to see if they know anyone who’s looking an apprentice
I literally have 0 experience or knowledge in electrical work and I’m thinking about joining a electrical apprenticeship. Your videos have been really helpful so far.
Im 23 and Im a technician/electrician in a surveillance company and Im still apprentice. If you like working outside and you want a dynamic work, this job is for you. The biggest tip that I can give to you is you need A LOT of patience in everything.Dont worry if you are new if your coworkers are willing to teach you. Making mistakes is natural and it is the best way to learn. Dont hesistate to call someone better than you if you dont understand something espacially when it's wiring. Best of luck for everyone.
@@jasondoblado9202 I'm in school doing a CERTII in a span of 2 years and will be looking for one after it, this my first year, so in 2 years or so I will be in his position, don't stress if you don't know alot of it, a lot of electricians tell me you learn more on site when doing your apprenticeship, but it's also good to do some research to get a lil bit of an understanding
Great to hear from you Ben man 👌 You're a trojan for the work horse, - Home workouts after the average day's work? Tight going. All the best for the next few months when things loosen up a bit man! 👍
One of the most authentic and unvarnished videos I have ever seen. Simple yet interesting. Oh, and very pleasing to the eye. Thanks man. Continue to do what you do. 👊
Hey Ben, new to your channel... It's outstanding you are seeking a career as an Electrician. What an outstanding career. My father was an electrician for 36 years. He started when he was 19, and retired at age 55 with a great retirement. It will be fun to watch your journey. And make sure safety glasses are a priority for you every day... Great job on the vlog!
To answer your question with in the title, if you want to be able to earn extra money and have a higher basic wage than the average office worker teacher and many more then yes this is the route to take. You’ll thank god that you did this apprenticeship when you go for a Morgage application
@@brayanswalletz5931 electricians have the capacity and capability to demonstrate an above average income with continuity, which is what banks like to see.
I’m not a sparky nor do I want to be, but am a Night Shift worker and did a similar video to this. Just came across this on my RU-vid homepage. Great video mate
Beginning my journey soon to become an Electrician. 26 years old, fully aware that if I did this sooner I’d be much more content than I am right now, but better late than never. Thanks for the video man
Hey, great video Ben. I just wanted to to ask you, as a very detailed oriented person and absolutely not criticizing your work, do you have to come back and fill in the gaps around the outlet/switch covers? Or do the painters take care of that? Just curious.
Im thinking of doing electric installation in college but im red/green colour blind, do you think I would struggle to get an apprenticeship or job with being colour blind or would I be fine but I’ll just need to ask for help? Thanks for any help
Good video! Would love to see some more videos on the electrician side of things if you could? Going for an apprenticeship soon and would like to see what it’s like hands on.
33, going on 34 looking to start but honestly partly embarassed that i know nothing about the field and starting so late. this video helped give a good insight. thanks for the upload!
Haha lol I’m 17. In my level 1 for electrical currently, there’s quite a few mid twenty year olds and a couple 30+. Never too late to learn and expand your capabilities. Get in now bud! could start full time by 37-38. My instructor lets some of the guys go only half days since they work and have other things yk.
First time visiting your channel Ben and searched for a more in depth review of electrical work but happened to get hooked and ended up watching the whole video really enjoyed it and this won’t be the only time a watch one of your vlogs
mate soon as I heard the accent I was hooked to the video! this is from a lad up in Northern Ireland ready to start his apprenticeship and seize the day, thanks for the insight bro 👊
I’m a pipefitter here in Austin and I done all the trade I like hvac the most but it’s bad ass how the work flow and routine is the same keep up the grind 👷🏼♂️💰
Nice video man, 2nd year apprentice electrician meself working down in Waterford. Can relate to your life with bringing in those bland lunches and finding motivation to workout/gaa training after work !
The true answer to this question actually depends of what you like to do in your daily basis. Being an electrician might seem interesting, but it can also be very tiring at times. When i started on the trade i hated it, but as i went on i started liking it. You really have to be ok with working in any conditions and walking a lot. You got to like waking up early as well. You ll get cuts on your hands and arms often so if you are not about that life then probably this is not for you. I like my work, but sometimes i do get tired and i wish i had studied something else. Other times i feel great and really enjoy it. The pay is fair, not every electrician makes more than 30$ an hour, thats a lie. It really depend where you live and how much experience and responsibility you are willing to take. Usually foremans in Texas make from 50k-80k so is a decent amount. More realistic than 100 $ an hour lol.
If your a journeyman in Texas not a forman but a journeyman making less than 32$ an hour your doing something wrong. I worked many different trades and was forman for some before settling on electrician now I make more than I ever made as a forman in other trades and just show up do my work enjoy it then go home
@@joseamaro6829 well buddy not all companies pay as much as you might be making in whatever company you work at. You would be surprised. I been working in multiple electrical companies and i know what the average electrician actually makes, even as a foreman. You would be surprised.
@@zeon_trl1326 not necessarily. I think we make decent money compared to what others do, but I find it annoying and dumb when some electricians try to exaggerate what they make (and even if they do make it) making seem like every electrician in the country can make that and thats just a lie. There are other careers that make if not the same probably much more like commercial pilot, truckers etc… it might require more study, but if thats something you like then its definitely a better option.
You’re going to do very well on here Ben. I’m a female coal miner from NSW, Australia and your video was recommended to me. Generally I would watch 20 secs and click exit. You are very easy and pleasant to watch, I watched the whole video & wanted to know what was next. All the best on your YT journey, and my Dad was a HV Sparky for 45 years. 🤟🏼
I’m 26, looking at getting into electrical, training for so many years..then becoming my own boss. Regret not doing it years ago but took the wrong path in life. Does anyone have any negatives or positives about doing this? Any answers welcome :)
I’m looking to do an apprenticeship but a little hesitant due to the apprentice pay, obviously i know in the long run you’ll get a decent salary; how was your pay in the first, second and third year if you don’t mind me asking? Also any tips, is it worth getting into one etc
I was a plumbing apprentice back in 2007. I would always talk to the electricians on the job site, and I would ask them if they've ever been 'shocked' or electrocuted (I had a dark sense of humor in my younger days 😆) They would tell me stories of accidents they've had, or about other electricians. I remember they use to call it getting "bit" instead of getting shocked, that would make me laugh. I always liked working around the electricians, they were cool. But, I can't stand the roofing, or insulation guys. Lol
@@piersonmcwayne1136 any electrician I’ve known and worked with would laugh at this and make a joke then tell a real experience or story they know. More than likely they would not be offended
Although not in a trade, I am starting at 18 as an apprentice at JP Morgan in a finance controller role, good starting wage and an obvious space for development and education. I think apprenticeships are amazing for so many reasons in any sector as it introduces and climates you and you end up having so much more knowledge than someone who went to uni
@@pedromorales8097 for finance an apprentice starts better then uni students catch up and then its about the same, I’m not sure for lower level banks but at the top that’s generally how it is as they prioritise experience over anything
If in us do research on if you want to join the union or not. Make your own decision, because both sides are going to say they’re better. And it’s a good idea to learn math and start studying code.
I know this video is old but im considering trying to go for it but im really really bad at math. Like its almost laughable how bad i am at it. Will this stop me?
I like honest and brave people, and strong people, and you run the channel in a great way and professional electric services, please accept my congratulations !!
I'm going to start an apprenticeship in September, not as an electrician, but in data analytics. Both give you a solid foundation for your career, good luck brother!👍🏽
All electrician jobs start at different times. My boyfriend gets up at 4am and has to be at 5. It's just depends on the project they are on and or the company they work for.
I am trying to installing two LED mirror in the washroom each consumes 468w total 936 Watt and 2 vanity light each takes 3 bulbs w and each of those led bulbs are 5 w total 30 Watt connecting all of these the single wire that was already there for washroom vanity light so just wondering is it safe to do that do not want that it cause fire or anything thanks
What is the best for new immigrant to usa and doesn't speak english well yet , to start construction apprenticship or find anywork like warehouse or restaurants .
I do the same thing with tea or coffee however ill add room temperature water to make it cool down quick and ill make sure to leave some space in the cup for that as well for the water. Glad you to see something similar.
Hi Ben, I am in my first year of college but have decided that it's not for me. I am thinking about going for an apprenticeship next year. What crowd would be the best for an electrician apprenticeship- ESB, Mercury....? Any advice is much appreciated
What is ur take on becoming an electrician trainee? Is there a difference between trainee and apprentice? Currently going to a trade school for electrician technician and soon getting the ET card.
My husband is getting ready to test to get in the apprenticeship program. He never took trig in high school, so a little worried about passing. I’m helping him right now watching RU-vid videos.
@@supercooldude824 If it's cnc machining you're on about, yes it's a great trade and something I'd like to move into in the future. Being a machinist as a toolmaker is cool but isn't the future anymore. You get to work with 1950s-2000s machinery like myself however it is not usually seen as much nowadays. As long as you're skilled it pays well, especially with more modern toolmaking.
The way we work, we work on new housing estates. These projects can go for multiple years - we are introduced and are familiarised to the schematics for the first couple of weeks or months and by then it’s second nature. Of there are any issues we have snag lists and make sure our houses are 100% before they’re available for the public to purchase
I was an apprentice back in 1989; but, I was such a numbskull back then, I didn't take things seriously or think about my future and ended up not applying myself and ultimately not finishing the apprenticeship. I even attempted going back in 1999, but by then I was too caught up with paying bills and couldn't afford time to study. I sometimes regret it, but I guess it was almost unavoidable given the kind of person I was in my early 20's. Interesting to see one of these day in the life things from an electrician's perspective.
Well man, nice video. I have a question for you? I’m an electrical apprentice too. I work in industrial and I am with a big company. The problem is I feel like I’m learning nothing. All I really do is “spot” the electricians up in lifts and Booms and run and fetch things for them. I’ve said it on multiple occasions that I don’t think I’m learning much but nothings changing. I’m halfway through my second year and basically have never wired anything. I really want to be a good electrician but the way I’m going I’ll be absolute shite. I want to change company’s but I’m afraid that I’d be a detriment to any other company now because of how little I know. What do you think I should do?
I recently moved companies too but I didn’t get a new job how you typically would by applying and getting hired. I put ads on 3-4 Facebook by and sell pages being open about my experience and what I was looking for in a new company and it proved VERY useful. Within minutes I was on the phone to a new employer who took me on after lockdown. The new fella I work with is much more hands on and very good for encouraging and demonstrating new things to me (and also over explaining things I know already ). But that’s be my advice. It’s what my dad told me to do when I was stuck in a similar situation with my old company
I know how you feel buddy, I felt like that at my last firm same with a lot of lads... Industrial is a hard one to get giving responsibility with straight away so most of the time when you got further on and paid more you would get put into house bashing or new builds because you could do more. I left that company whilst still an apprentice now. You’ve just got be honest with your new employer and make sure you move to a good one.
This seems to be an issue working for commercial/industrial companies which is why I’m so happy I done my apprenticeship with a domestic company because you literally learn everything doing EICRs, consumer unit changes, rewires, new builds etc. Within my first year I had the ability to do a full rewire without any help
@@connerwright1322 if you leave an apprenticeship even if you havent ceompleted it what does the employer say? What happens? For example leaving an apprenticeship after 2 years even though its 4 years long.
Just left an apprenticeship I hated , and have no idea what to do but I really like the idea of being an electrician, I’m 17. Any help would be appreciated:)
17/18 is very young, i’d say go onto the gov website and search for electrician apprenticeships near you or have a look on indeed or any jobs website...if you get into one now you’ll be fully qualified by the time you’re my age
I'm beginning my journey as in apprentice in my field, fun to watch its about the same but not exactly, thank you for the hard work and appreciate the share if your daily task.
Hi guy some one please tell me the different between home depot 2 gauge thhn copper wire and Lowes wire. They both made by southwire but why does lowe list it can only carry max 110 amp while home depot listed on their site 125 amp max. If I don't remember wrong, I think in store even said 130 amp. I plan to run 25-28 feet inside conduit over head inside garrage ceiling. 125 circuit breaker box. Thanks
I started as an electrician when I was 17 but by the time I got my apprenticeship done I wasn’t happy with my pay rate compared to a lot of other trades for what I was doing. I ended up getting into the oil industry and doing camp work and I like it.
Exact same as me, I left but rather than oil I went to work as an electrician fault finder on trains servicing them wiring break pedals safety doors ect, then I joined rolls Royce aerospace as an engine wireman on the euro fighter the money is double what I was getting on the install game
I have no idea why electrician apprentices make so little compared to other trades. Our trade needs more good hands, but with such a measly pay scale for apprentices, we end up with whoever we can get, ir we remain constantly shorthanded. If you do stick with the apprenticeship, it is worth the final result, but I realize it takes a lot of patience. Good luck
@@Southernguitar74 in my experience in the construction/install game electricians money is terrible compared to the terms and conditions working in any engineering sector as an electrician.
Im thinking of leaving school to do an apprenticeship. Im only 17 but school is really not for me i hate it. Im working on a farm nearly 24/7 and have done experience with an electrician. Has anyone left school and done similar?
Not really mate I mean I think fire security engineers are the most advanced ones out there in the sense that we’ll with the fire alarm we have to wire the panel every device and then depending on the system must spend what a good 2-3 hours on a computer programming it.
currently training to be an electrician at college, just about to finish the level 2 course hoping to get myself an apprenticeship soon. love the routine good content
I'm 40 and just now starting out with this. But with my house, car and everything already being payed off and no wife and kids, making the right money I can retire by 50.
You left when the sun was out and got back home when the sun was out , must be nice lol In America you work from sun up to sundown lol just to live in a box
Cool. I'm an electrical engineer, but is getting tired of the sitting down office work. Do you think I could get in with my degree or do you need some sort of experience to get in?
So I’ve decided to leave uni bc of how online uni failed me, would I still be able to get into a electrician apprenticeship at 20 years old? Would u still recommend it?
Just to add. As in an apprentice electricians aswell. I have a person on my course that's 46. Another apprentice in my work that's 45. It's never ever too late. Thr majority of people on my course are 18-25.
I did an apprenticeship worst thing I ever did. I got stuck working for old men that only would teach me to do the work they didn't want to do. I would have been better off going into the civil service.
Chose an electrical installation course at my college and then I’m going to get a part time job. I’m 16. Getting some experience before I go in the navy
