I was thinking about that too, and I think the distinction is "Great" Serpent vs "Base" Serpent.

I was in the same boat. Wanted a serious narrative and just didn't fit in with the Harmontown style other people were familiar with.

100%. D&D is always a little goofy, but a lot of groups can carry an actual narrative with actual stakes. It just depends on who you're playing with.
