Our review of the Entertainment Series "ES" 1203, with 8 x 4" MF/HF drivers and dual 12" LF drivers in a 1200WRMS system with OLED display and adjustment. This is the newest in the ES series and really sound fantastic ! Great system for live, DJ, Corporate...clean lines and no logos to distract for great aesthetics

Yet another great, comprehensive equipment review video John. Thank you for putting these together. Geeks like me love seeing the disassembly and the Smaart data on these videos.

Freq. response according to ES1203 manual starts at 35Hz but at 48:58 is clear that nothing happened at 40Hz. The real freq. response is up to 45Hz. Thanks for your detailed review! Cheers from Chile! :D

Hi there, I noticed you had one and hopefully you love it? I have just ordered one, and have never seen one or know of anyone that has one other than the RU-vid vids I’ve seen. Please tell me this is a fantastic system? I play solo, acoustic guitar, vocals, and drumbeats from a stompbox type set up. Would greatly appreciate any type of feedback. Thanks in advance!

I had a chance to play with it. One thing I didn't like is that you cannot tell if you are clipping the INPUT on any of the channels. You have different gain settings (0db, 10db, 20db) and fader level adjustment, but neither shows if you are clipping or peaking--just a level bar that goes up and down. The little red light that lights when peaking corresponds to the master output, but nothing for the input. Trying to set proper gain structure is tricky.

First of all, thanks for the video. It was really helpfull and well done. I´ve got a pair of 1203s for doing shows in open air enviroments. Never wanted to buy a line array system and besides Im pretty happy with the 1203s, I think I would need a bit more of energy in the center as frontill, and perhaps another extra sub for the low end. Wich model you recommend for this extra energy I need?. Than you very very much.
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 5 лет назад
Look at the 18H, i don't think a 15" will do what you want. There are many great 18" subs from db, RCF and FBT that will compliment low end of the ES1203 and get a system down to 40-50hz.

Thanks for another great video, John. How's the quality of bass compared to FBT CS1000? Is the bass as tight and punchy as the CS1000? Which system is more ideal for vocal/singing? Thanks a lot. Hesitate to pull the trigger on CS1000
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 6 лет назад
The low end is better with the ES1203 than the CS1000....the response is amazing in the vocal range. Lots of sound. You would have to double up the CS1000 to get the same response IMO.

Hi John, again a great video and I like all the content on your channel. Question: Is it possible to add an 18" sub to the ES 1203 for additional low end and use the ES 1203 as a bass + top configuration? Would then a single SUB 18H enough or do I need two of them or a double 18" subwoofer. What is in your opinion the best way to go and what brand and type of subwoofer would you add. Greetz, Marc
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 6 лет назад
Yes, you can use the 18H or similar and use the xover outputs to feed the ES1203 from 90hz and above. To keep up a 18" per unit would be recommended. 18H is good, SUB8004 from RCF is better or SUBLINE118SA from FBT

What is a better sounding system for a small party of 75 people in a medium sized room...a pair of rcf evox 8's or one DB ES 1203 run in stereo mode? What's your opinion? Thanks!! (Also, are there reverb settings for the mic inputs in the es 1203?)

Hey man, love your videos! Just looking for some advice from Scotland, how would you compare the rcf evox 12 v the es1203, using them for a full band and looking to upgrade from the evox 8 as it simply doesn’t have enough low end oomph for most gigs and the evox 12 and es1203 look to be the best two options but just wondering what you would recommend out of those? Thanks again! Keep up the videos they are an excellent source of info

I would have to say the ES1203 wins for power and low end in my opinion...with the EVOX12 or ES1203 you could do up to around 300 with decent levels indoors and have good low end. just remember the systems are 2 way with the floor unit doing double duty of LF driver and some sub woofer , but it is not a dedicated subwoofer. the dual 12's of the ES1203 have more get up and go and the system does have more power

If you need to add low end to the ES1203, you are using the system for the wrong application. You would want to go to the IG series and dedicated subs at that point.

Hi. Would it be possible to swap out the 12" drivers for neodymium drivers to reduce the weight of the sub? Any thoughts on this and what drivers would be a good fit?
@trinityprosound

No there is not a NEO replacement as the drivers are OEM custom for this system. Your results in attempting to swap out would affect the sound quality and output of the unit.

Hi John, thanks for your really nice videos about the ES1203, I am doubting either I need to go for double ES1002 or go for double ES1203. I do weddings for max 175 people. I have now 2 EV ZXA1 12inch subs paired with Yamaha DBR10's tops. This sounds great for 100 people, but if I have more I need to push it and it sets it's limits. Would 2 ES1002 or ES1203 do a better job? Also portability is a big thing for me. Also missing some bass with just a 12 inch sub. Thanks in advance for your advice. Keep up the good work :)
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 5 лет назад
The ES1203 will give you more options for smaller gigs. 2 of those will amaze you , and the added power over the 1002 is worth it for the "stereo" ability for smaller events. the low end from these is simply awesome.

yes but not next to each other as the combining of the audio would produce massive comb filtering. you can use as delays, but that brings up the use of a processor or mixer board that has delay parameters built in to adjust.

@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 6 лет назад
It won't be as harsh at the K10's HF drivers, being all paper cone. IMO the dual 12's of the ES1203 do a great job for LF and SUB type duty. We use to be QSC dealers, but they lied too much on their spec sheets and IMO there is more available now that sounds better for the $$$$ invested. AND the ES1203 is easier to setup and transport.

I bought 2 of these for DJ'ing purposes but I find them pretty underwhelming, tbh. I think my setup procedure was correct but the sound seems a tad bit "muffled" coming from my Pioneer controller. Are there specific settings I should try out? I reall would love to like the system but so far not so, tbh. Friend of mine works at a local music store and told me the DB's aren't actually really suited for DJ purposes and more for live band performance. Is this correct? I have had a HK Audio LUCAS 2K18 as a swapping device while one of the ES' was already in repair due to a broken speaker and those sound much, much better. Any advice?
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 5 лет назад
This sounds like not enough rig for your gig and that you are over driving the systems with excessive bass or low tonal control. We have sold quite a few of the ES1203 for DJ work as well as live sound and have yet to have someone blow them up or damage them. If you have the limiter lights coming on you are in danger of damaging the speakers, continued operation in limiting is certain death for them. Run your system flat no boost of low or highs. I can run the ES503's for a live band or music and cover 200 people with no issues and those are ½ the system of a ES1203.
@TheFunkloft
@TheFunkloft 5 лет назад
@@trinityprosound Is it possible I chose an incorrect setting? I never ever play into the reds on my mixer and the sound wasn't that loud, tbh. I fiddled a bit with the +db settings on the small screen. Could this have been an issue? I find it strange that you claim this. The sound out of this device is horrible compared to standard multi purpose 15 inch tops for example. I really want to like my devices but it's hard. :'(

do not use input #1 as that is set for mic level out of the box, use input 2 or 3 on it as those should be set for line level. you can see what each channel is in the menu settings and also the manual goes over that as well. make sure you are operating in mono mode when both speakers are stacked on the LF unti.

A rock band for 200 could be done with a single unit, but would be at the limit for sound levels with the system , we have used a pair of ES503's in the past for that size of event and worked very well with good levels, a pair of ES802 or the ES1203 would work, a pair of ES1203 would be killer...

Great work! I have been highly considering a new column array system. EV is the front winner for the overall package, although the EVOX12 sounded a tiny better. Is this the new king of the column arrays? How do you think it compares to the EVOX 12. I think you have some experience with that system.
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 5 лет назад
We have demo'd the EV system, DB 503, RCF JMIX8 recently as well as the EVOX12 and ES1203. For an all in one, the ES1203 is the winner. With the power and triple amps in it and portability it wins. The Evolve 50 is more in line with the EVOX8 and does OK against the others mentioned above. EV tunes different than DB , than RCF, so listening becomes subjective, but all have similar drivers in size and power, there is only so much you can do with small speakers and a 12" LF driver. The ES1203 will not disappoint.

Hi...great videos you put up - thanks. I'm interested in this or the evox 12 and am wondering if you could describe the low end sound characteristics. I like tight and defined bass as opposed to "just a lot of bass" if you know what i mean. I would be using them to DJ in smaller venues like bars, or private parties with 125-150 people. I was able to listen to a pair of evox 8 and i liked the low end a lot (nice and tight), but i did not like the midrange (sort of too mid-rangey and i could not EQ it out). I did really like the high end frequency - very gentle on the ears. So i'd love for you to share your thoughts on the low end characteristics of the rcf evox 12 compared to a pair of evox 8 low end boxes...compared to the db tech 1203 low end box. I like that the 1203 can be run in stereo with separating the top box into left and right...but would it sound unbalanced that way? Can you describe the midrange characteristics of the evox 8 vs. evox 12 vs. db 1203... So many questions - i know you. But whatever you can share here I would soooo appreciate it. Thanks so much. DJ Noah Z in Boston. (I currently run a yorkville system - 12" tops (1400 watts rms) with double 12 subs (also 1400 watts rms. It's a killer system (though i know you don't like Yorkville much). I EQ to my liking with a driverack pa2. But this system is HEAVY! 60lb tops, 120 lb subs...It would be nice to have something that's easier to transport and that can work well in smaller venues)
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 4 года назад
The low end on all these types of systems from DB Tech, RCF and FBT, etc. are using the LF box as double duty, it is lets say a LF driver on steroids. The EVOX12 does a great job with the 15" LF driver, but I do like the dual 12's for punch. The tops all use similar drivers, most of these systems are crossed over around 160hz for the LF to HF transition. The drivers in the tops do really shine in the mid range level and can easily outrun the LF box at distance as we found with the ES 1203 and EVOX12. You can cut out the MID loading with proper 31 band EQ that you talk about on these, we typically don't to much as far as EQ with them and run them flat and no boost or cut anywhere. Both bottoms are a bit heavy around 60 pounds or so, but easy to transport. The feature to be able to split tops for smaller events is attractive for the ES1203, which most others can't do. With a pair of ES1203 you could do 300 peeps IMO easy.
@noahman27
@noahman27 4 года назад
@@trinityprosound Thanks for the super fast reply. I do know the low end driver is doing double duty and i would pair them with my subs if i needed more low end than they are capable of. If I were to DJ&Karaoke a small event (say 75 people), which would be best suited...the evox 12 or the 1203?

I have a doubt about the stability of the system on floors not stable or with dancers who could shake the system. We should be able to use the sub horizontally, too bad there is not a slot stand in this position !
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 6 лет назад
It is very stable due to the weight of the LF bottom unit, I would trust this over a speaker on a tripod stand any day vs. someone knocking it over. or tripping over a leg of a tripod stand. no issues or worries for us in that area with the ES1203.

Hi; how you compare it against EV KTX or ETX? The DB es1203 Kills both, just the KTX or none?
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 5 лет назад
Really can't compare these apples to apples as they are not the same type of speaker or system, more of a comparison to the EVOLVE 50...ES1203 kills the EVOLVE 50 twice over.

@@trinityprosound how can you compare these with the L1 M2 bose, kr 202, FTB Vertus or HK big base?
@aldiaz9068
@aldiaz9068 4 года назад
Hi there,,, I’ve seen from one of the comments either here, or part two, saying they had the Big Base Hk Elements speakers and these made he HK’s sound like toys. Well,, I don’t know if he has what I have.. The HK Elements are completely modular. They are comprised of a Active Double 10 subwoofer that powers another Passive Double 10 subwoofer, and (that same sub) powered 3 E835 arrays. Each E835 is comprised of 8 x 3.5” Neo speakers. So,, on either side of my system, I have 24 x 3.5” Neos in a column array and 2 x Double 10” subs. I’m not sure he had all that,, since it’s modular, he could of had 1 x Double 10 and only 2 E835’s which is about 1/2 of what I use per side. Anyway,, my question,, With you vast wealth of knowledge on this front,, do you think the ES1203’s would do the work, or even better, of my HK’s? The ES1203’s are “sort of modular” as you could use one side and split the tops for smaller shows. Having this system would definitely be less pieces of my HK but don’t want to downgrade. My stuff, sounds good but am always looking to make my life easier. Thanks for any input. Al
@aldiaz9068
@aldiaz9068 4 года назад
I keep saying “modular”, but another word would be scalable!
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 4 года назад
the ES1203 is a single package type system, not recommended to deploy them side by side, etc. The IG series speakers from db Technologies are scalable for 1 or 2 per side. We did a high school gym with 2 per side and a double 18 sub per side and rocked the entire gym.

@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 5 лет назад
you can, but I don't recommend anything QSC unfortunately as they lie about power and their speakers really don't sound that good compared to comparable DB and RCF equipment. any decent 18" sub will work , but the IG4T will out run a single QSC sub easily.

What do you think of this vs a pair of evolve 50’s? We are looking for a portable church setup, about 200-250
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 5 лет назад
They are just OK, i think you would have better results for this size of congregation with the FBT CS1000's, they can be adapted to "double up" as you grow and they have more power and sonically a better solution since you can somewhat aim the tops up and down.
@fredd2248
@fredd2248 5 лет назад
Thank you. I saw you review on this and will look at it again. That is one reason I thought of these, the ability to grow, I think I missed the CS1000 could do that. Of the 1203 and CS1000, you would recommend the CS1000? Which do you think has a bit “warmer” tone? Thanks again.
@trinityprosound
@trinityprosound 5 лет назад
Its a toss up, the systems have similar tops but the ES1203 you would have to split and use the sub on one side or the other if going with a single unit, we used the CS1000's (a pair) for over 2 years with no issues and same size of congregation. We augmented the low end with a 15" sub by the drums and sounded very full for a 5 piece band and vocals. If you do 2 ES1203's or a pair os ES1002's that would be an amazing system, but the CS1000's really do a very good job and sound fantastic. Easy on the ears and works great with pastors walking in front of them with a countryman over the ear mic, no issues.

@@trinityprosound Thank you for your help, I am still trying to narrow down, with our target the next 2 months. Barring anything new/amazing coming out at NAMM - some details hoping you can help narrow down. We will probably start with about 150 people, but quickly have events that do 250-300. The room is probably 60x60, lots of reflective surfaces. Stackable chairs where we can go up to about 350-400 in the room. priorities are fast setup, sound quality and portability - Want to target pieces that aren't much more than 60lbs each for easier load in and out. I want to run full band through house with wired in ears. Running electric drums, bass, keys, guitars, vocals etc. So I want to make sure we have a decent low end. For main speaker budget we could go 4-5k, but if we could start out cheaper and build that would be better. Also, would be nice to get something that we could build into a bigger setup. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to listen to any of these personally, but I am looking at these as options. ES1203 - could start with one and add a second as needed- Dual 12 low end seems like it would be better, based on reviews CS1000 - Would have to start with 2, but could still double system Evox12 - Start with 2 and can't increase size Evolve 50 - start with 2, budget friendly - can't increase size Any others you would suggest in our budget, priorities etc. Thanks again for all the help
@trinityprosound

The ES1203 by itself for 150 no issue, 300 or more for a single unit would be pushing it, 2 of them to do 300 no issues. out of all of them the ES1203 wins...next is EVOX 12, then CS1000, last is Evolve 50 .... if you are wanting to do a great system that can be expanded to 2 tops per side that you could do nearly 1000 with 2 of those per side would be the RCF NXL24's or Db Tech IG4T. But you will need subs..and that will blow your budget as well. The ES1203 has best portability and sound IMO out of all of them and the dual 12's really do a cut above all the rest. NAMM is in a month so you never know, but nothing leaked as of yet for new product.

The ES1203 packs a punch ... I like the punchy dual 12" drivers for the low end and the tops are similar to the EVOX12. The ES1203 would work for live band no issues. We have ES503 doing a full band in a church with V-Drums, Bass, Gtr, Keys, 4 vocals for 250 peeps in the congregation and it has more output than needed...the ES1203 would kill the room for sure. IMO the ES1203 would do 250-300 and very acceptable levels and quality of output with no issues.

I don’t remember over pushing it cos I used them alongside my Bose f1 and the Bose is still fine. Any advice??

sounds like you were trying to get more from the speaker than it is capable...you have to watch limiting and the SPL you are attempting to create for an event. the low end will limit the box way before any other content above 100hz will. if you are needing more low end you may have to use a dedicated subwoofer... but it you have 2 of them doing 200-250 peeps , you should not have any issues with SPL or coverage ... if you are trying to do 500 peeps, may need more rig for the gig

I hear the same problem with every system designed this way. The right question to ask is what application are you using it for. I think it's not the right system for most DJ setups only because the subs never can produce that low frequency. I'm waiting to see if one of the manufacturer's will come up with one that DJ's will like.

My friend. I just like you with the same situation. I pay 5k dollars for those speakers. My friend RCF-J8 for $800.00 sounds ten times better. I did a sound compares. The acoustic bass from RCF-J8 much better then DB ES1203. I will have to increase the bass level to get a dissent sound but then the speakers will red peak light will turn on

That will give you the low end you need and I would use the built in cross over of the SUB18H to go to the ES1203, and you would be able to push the ES1203 a bit more from the 90hz up and get more out prior to the amp clipping.

If you are experiencing issues with the ES1203 you are deploying them wrong. I have put the ES1203 up against a J8 and the low end is twice the output of the J8, something in the setup is not correct.
