The DC Extended Universe has had some trouble getting off the ground with their movies receiving harsh criticism. Owen from Owen Likes Comics takes a look at what he believes is the biggest problem with the DCEU and films like Batman v Superman, Man of Steel, and Suicide Squad. Is the DC cinematic universe simply playing catch up with the Marvel? Should they take their time with future movies like Wonder Woman and Justice League? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

One could make the argument that DC is focusing too much on the quantity of Marvel films and less on the quality of their own films.

I'd agree with this.

Danny Malzahn and you don't think DC will do the same thing. this year and last year released two movies, and at the rate of which they are announcing movies from deatshot to Nightwing. there is a very high chance that DC is going to release 2 movies every year or even three. especially if they want the majority of box office sales and to keep fans interested. you have to see it through a business way. Yes DC is being careful, but they have to slow down, all those marvel movies through 2028 don't have directors, and DC probably does have movies planned all the way to 2028 too. It's all about business, and how fact DC can make money, same goes with marvel, and ever movie studio trying to make a universe

Danny Malzahn You don't call the films DC has been producing "rushed out" or "painfully mideocre"? I can tell you that they aren't filming any game-changing masterpieces.
@zettovii1367
@zettovii1367 7 лет назад
+Danny Malzahn They are focusing too much on quantity, in the sense that they are already thinking of the sequel of the sequel before they have even finished the development of the first movie. Its one thing to think ahead and already have a plan for different sequels and develop stories/movies based on it. But its another thing to skim over different story points just so you can move on to the next sequel. Not saying that each movie needs to be a master piece, but they should put more priority on the development on the movies of the present rather than focusing on moving on to the next plot.
@fanatic8316
@fanatic8316 7 лет назад
Danny Malzahn then why should WB announce more movies when clearly people are complaining that their favorite superheroes or villains such as doomsday, and Superman aren't being well developed, what difference does it make. it's only going to hurt DC as a brand

Exactly, The idea behind BvS or the actual movie that didn't get to shine was pretty epic... however, let down by the fact that they were doing so much in that one movie (Dawn of Justice, Flashpoint Paradox, Man of Steel Sequel, Batman Origin, Death of Superman, Trinity, Doomsday, Lex Luthor) that's like 8 movies crammed into 1. When all they had to do was make just BvS (something like The Dark Knight Returns). P.S. I loved Man of Steel take (despite some flows) and also liked BvS (watched the Ultimate Edition which does improve on the theatrical version), maybe because of the story it was trying to tell at the very core.

Harambe's Herald- A better writer would have had Batman do it or anything to not be so useless in that fight. Bro, nothing in that damn movie makes sense. Why did Batman make a fucking speartip instead the tips of the bullets he's so fond of? Why make non-lethal gas grenades instead of fregs for his grenade launcher? They just had to come up with dumb shitty ways for Superman to survive the fight with Batman and get himself killed to stop Doomsday, so they needed a melee weapon and some near useless Kryptonite tear gas. Hell, Supes could have surely thrown the spear through Doomsday even if he could fly with it

A lot of things factor in to what's wrong with the DCEU.. -WB doesn't understand DC and are TOO involved -This universe was NOT planned. Man of Steel was supposed to be the start of a Superman trilogy similar to TDK trilogy. -Announcing too many unnecessary movies without focusing on what's important -Not giving filmmakers enough freedom -Rushing the movies (only gave Ayer 6 weeks to write a summer blockbuster..)

Having Supes die in his second movie is rushed. In the comics he died after decades of stories, in which people could get attached to the characters. In the movies neither the audience nor the general public in he movie´s universe had any reason to feel sad about it.
@PumperKrickel
@PumperKrickel 7 лет назад
Well I felt nothing but disappointment over a great story wasted. I liked Man of Steel, but it set up character development for Supes that never happened. In the end he finally embraced his heroic persona, so I expected this to be more explored in the sequel. But what we got felt like being back to square one. Gone was all of his confidence and he seemed more insecure and inexperienced than ever. We never got to see the "real" Superman, which is why his death lacked meaning. He sacrificed himself to save the earth, but the danger was kryptonian again. Anyone in the movie universe who was skeptical of aliens with superpowers running around on earth has even more reason to remain skeptical. He didn´t prove his critics wrong, if anything he proved everybody right that said that the kryptonians are a threat. I also believe that Superman´s death in the comics was a much bigger deal, since nobody expected it. It was on the news around the world when it happened, because Superman was seen as immortal in the mainstream. In the movies he always seemed outclassed by his opponent, so his death was much less of a surprise. Your last sentence is both uncalled for and untrue. I liked MoS, loved the Nolan trilogy and absolutely adore some of the animated movies. Flashpoint is an absolute masterpiece for example. So don´t accuse me of blindly hating on DC and I won´t accuse you of being a rabid fanboy.
@PumperKrickel
@PumperKrickel 7 лет назад
Well, if that shit stops with JL I´m glad. I just don´t share your confidence. Him saving people was my favourite part, but I don´t think the montages were enough in that sector. You ultimately watch a Superman movie to see him help people, so I think it deserves a more prominent role. Luthor created Doomsday using kryptonian technology, that´s the difference in my opinion. He never could have done that without the ship and Zod´s body. It never mattered to Superman whether the world loved him or hated him. He still saved lives and protected the earth with every fiber of his body, because it´s the right thing to do. For this Superman that didn´t seem enough, since he was more than willing to give up Supermanning first chance he got. Batman´s change of heart was an even bigger problem for me, since it made no sense. During their fight he taunts him: "I bet your parents taught you that you mean something, that you're here for a reason..." Then he acts all shocked when he finds out Supes indeed does have parents he cares about. Nothing has changed, yet we´re to believe Batman changed his mind just because their moms share the same name and he feels reminded of his own loss? The world´s greatest detective shouldn´t need obvious hints like that to figure out killing is bad. I get Batman has been through a lot of shit we didn´t see. Then again, why weren´t we shown what made him this bitter and out of control? Robin´s death should have been a movie in itself, instead we only get vague hints. Why?
@ONECrewReacts
@ONECrewReacts 7 лет назад
In the comics Superman died because his sales had slipped and they planned on scrapping the character. He was brought back a few months later because many fans were upset because he died. That's it, no other reason. In the DCEU, he died sacrificing himself for a world that was still debating whether he was good or not. His death also forced Batman to form the Justice League to pick up the slack of defending the world from alien invasion that was left from Supes dying. And just like in the comics, Superman will return to save the day and restore hope in the world. His movie death was used to further the narrative. And my daughter (who was 7 at the time), cried her eyes out when Supes died. Most of the kids under 13 were crying during that scene in the theatre I was in, and more than a few adults too

I did, unfortunately, give up on the DCCU. After Justice League, I felt as though I'd given them plenty of opportunities to get their movies right. After Man of Steel, BVS, Suicide Squad I was surprised when Wonder Woman was a delightful watch. WW gave me hope for the DCCU and then Justice League proved they hadn't learned anything. They took fan suggestions and made a mess all over again. I won't give my money to a company who continues to make the same mistakes time and time again. I can't do that. I won't be taken advantage of. I just wonder if there is any way I'll go back to watching DC movies again. I can't foresee it happening. how bout you guys?

NerdSync great video. As I read before in an article about why Superman is the staple for strong man type characters and why nobody wants to admit he can ever lose. There's much to the article that goes into a lot of detail. The article ended with "DC focuses on the SUPER, while MARVEL focuses on the MAN". These tendencies of DC have spilled over into their films as well. In their comics it's easier to get away with such a thing. The stories can be told as long or as short as possible but on film the average time frame is an hour and a half to two. It's hard to convey such deep stories in one film which is why Marvel made a film for each character, "build up films" or BUFS. Each character has 3 films on average, so quality is what they bring to the table not quantity like DC. I love DC but their rush to pump out films lack in story due to their lack of quality. They make for good movies just not good COMIC BOOK movies.

@Fish4Man61
@Fish4Man61 7 лет назад
Yes, there should never be batman dependency syndrome. Marvel printed money on giving lights to characters we don't know first. Like Iron Man (well, I did, but talking mainstream here). Heck, Guardians of the Galaxy, one of the biggest hits in CBM history was pretty much the epitome of that. But they realize taking their time, not rushing anything - and letting the characters do it all themselves is key. There is no reason to rely heavily on Batman when you have awesome kick-ass characters like Constantine, Flash (and his humor is exactly the type that they so desperately need in the DCEU right now. Seriously, wtf), Zatanna, Supergirl, Doctor Fate, Jesus, not going to go through my list of good DC characters. To the execs at the DC movie department of WB, it seems to be 'batman did it for us in the past. So we will ride him hard damn it all. Why take risks that are actually pretty golden?' Which may work for monetary reasons - but it is only infuriating to everyone else, including myself. And I firmly believe they would make even MORE money if they stepped out of that shell the right way. Also, I am not a Marvel Fanboy making fun of DC decisions. I love many of the great characters and comics from both of them. The toxic dc vs marvel fanboyism the last 10 years is cancer. It lets people let down, put down, and under appreciate some awesome, great characters, regardless of who you are talking about. I just wish the DCEU execs would actually let people see them, by opening up them in such a way.

Problem with DCEU is not rushing. MoS and BvS (and JL) are one close story of first contact, consequences of absulute power and reaction of the world. (SS tried that too but failed horribly) The problem is WB being reactionary and so called 'fans' hating without thinking. BvS butchered because of greed, SS script wrote in 6 weeks and after BvS backlash they butchered the film and director's vision even more to add more jokes and action to be more like Marvel. What they need to do hear ideas from directors and let them do their work (of course in some limitation and generel world building) , and stop listening to critics or biased 'fans'. I am really hopefull about Nightwing movie beacuse of the director. I hated BvS thearical cut. But after watching Ultimate Edition it become my favorite comibok movie of 2016.

Fatih Pehlivan Rushing still follows though. They tried to fit so much in BvS to rush straight to JL and when it was attacked for being "too dark" they rushed to change up SS instead of just keeping the original or going back and redoing the movie completely to feel more coherent. Rushing is what makes them seem so reactionary because they're trying to move so far ahead that they are reacting to issues as they come instead of taking their time to give their movies the proper treatment. MOS is the exception as while people may have issues, it was a proper starting ground for the DCEU due to them not rushing nor having anything yet to react to.

No its simply not 'my image of Superman' thinking. People criticized MoS for battle scenes and zod killing without considering the plot of movie and not even comics or Superman 2. Same applies Batman manslaughter in BvS and Martha scene. Critics bashed the theatrical cut(whic is understantable) and people started to hate and mock without thinking(also read some of those critics 'criticisms' its just laughable) I dont know what you mean by ' too dumb to understand' thing if you have any major problems about MoS and BvS i can aswer them.

I always thought that the problem of "martha" would be easily fix by some few more lines in the script, like having batman saying to alfred: "You know what were my father last words alfred?. He said my mothers name, he said martha. He knew he was dying, but instead he cared about the thing he loved most in this world. That is the essence of humanity alferd, an alien with infinte powers will never understand what that love is". And thats that, when the "martha" moment woud appear then we, the audience, would have got more invest in the moment and in batman desicion

Save superman isn't the symbol of hope you described, not as presented in the movie. In the movie he's presented as a moros character that's only reluctantly rescuing people. IN addition, Batman's hatred of Superman is built up on his power, not his lack of humanity. He says very clearly to alfrid that if there's even a 1% chance he could turn evil, he has to kill him. And as an older more evil batman, someone who has seen the worst of humanity in the form of criminals and the joker, Superman saying he has a mom isn't going to change Batman's opinion. It's a case of intent vs execution. The story in theory is good, with the 'iconic' superman and a better script. But we didn't have either. The story pushed batman's motivation for wanting to kill superman past the point where having a mom with the same name should have mattered. And it delivered a superman that was anything but the 'symbol of hope' he is in the comics. They tried, but they failed, and it's been very deservingly ridiculed and hated for that failure.

Marvel has a better excuse. Spider is theres again. They had to start the universe without their Batman. So of course they'll rush him a film out. I think your mostly right. Otherwise I can't find any reason why someone who claims to be a Batman fan, would be cool with Batman breaking the rule that is the backbone of his entire character. Or someone who is a Superman fan would be fine with a hopeless mope. Or a Lex that has mental issues. It's like Hack Snyder literally looked at the comics and said, "this is what people like? Okay. I'm honestly shocked. The Martha scene was maybe my least favorite scene in any film ever made, but the way you described it...I don't know, it's like it clicked for me. I still think the film's fundamentally broken largely because of the disconnect from the main characters, but looking at the scene as being more of a "you would rather save someone else's life than your own which makes you a good person and reminds me I'm a good person" rather than a "our mom's have the same name, let's team up!" helps tremendously

I hated the scene for a similar reason. Still kinda do. The problem is that it had everything in place to be EPIC, the ideas were sound, but the execution just fell flat. I mean, they made Batman a murderer... a freakin' MURDERER, JUST so this scene could work and bring him back into the light... and because it didn't, it taints the whole rest of the film.

I think we should stop referring to these films as "DC Films". DC Films would imply that the actual company of DC Comics has any significant creative control over what is happening when in truth, it's mainly Warner Bros. taking the DC Licence and rushing to the finish line to cash in on that shared universe money. Yeah, Geoff Johns is on board right now, but he can only salvage so much and you can bet your right arm that the studio is fighting him every step of the way. Now do I think WB is intentionally making bad films? No, but I do think that they have very clearly demonstrated that they simply don't know how to make good films with these characters, and good films like Batman (1989), The Dark Knight trilogy (and Watchmen to a lesser extent) proving to be a greater and greater fluke all the time (not on the part of creative teams of those films, but more the fact that Warner was able to find just the right team and didn't interfere to a great enough degree to ruin it). In order for the DCEU to have any chance of succeeding, they need to start over, form their own separate film branch that is a proper film studio like Marvel has and find a Kevin Feige equivalent that understands both these characters and good filmmaking.

Izamanaick I think that's part of it. The "movie by committee" is really the biggest part of the problem for the DCEU. Marvel movies excel when the directors are given (mostly) free reign to craft their vision. Favreau for Iron Man 1. Whedon for Avengers. Gunn for GotG. DC needs to let the creators create good stories and interesting characters.

Batman v Superman's main problem is its last half hour. Once Batman saved Martha Kent, the movie was over. The story had resolved itself. (If they needed a Big Dumb Final Fight afterward, they could've stuck Lex in his classic green and purple suit for a quick go-around, but even that wouldn't be necessary.) Imagine a BVS... 1) Without the Knightmare sequence; 2) Without the e-mail scene; 3) Without Doomsday or the death of Superman; 4) In which Bruce doesn't open Diana's file until right before the credits. There. The main problems are solved. People could still argue that the movie was too dour for them or whatever, but the film would be internally consistent. A Man of Steel 2 or a DCEU solo Batman film wouldn't have been necessary in that case, since it's Superman's death more than anything else that was rushed to its own detriment. Now imagine a direct sequel using the leftover material... 1) That opens with Bruce e-mailing Diana about her (and only her) identity; 2) That features Doomsday as a villain sent by Darkseid, not created by Lex; 3) That follows Bruce as he convinces Diana to become Wonder Woman again; 4) That loosely adapts the Death of Superman storyline over an entire film. We could call that movie Dawn of Justice, and we could still follow it up with Suicide Squad. Perhaps between the releases of BvS and DOJ, we could place in the Wonder Woman prequel. This approach would have delayed the DCEU by one film. Just one film! That's how close we were to a properly-paced cinematic universe.

True, but that was just one character. A majority of the DCEU characters have had little time to develop. Whether it's rushing out crossovers, interfering with the creative process, giving writers only weeks to write a final script, or butchering the film in the editing room, the studio and producers do not have their priorities straight.
@welcometothemetaverse2523
@welcometothemetaverse2523 7 лет назад
+Danny Malzahn It's not just the lack of solo films (though they do help) it's also the execution. If a new interpretation of a character is made, personality and character needs to be established. If a storyline tries to be complex and dramatic, motivations should be clear. I'm fine with a darker Superman as long as I can relate to him. I'm fine with a morally broken Batman, as long as I understand his emotional backbone. But rushing from story to story (unless you read every comic they reference so briefly) makes it harder to feel the importance of what they're trying to display. If the execution is off, people will remain divisive.
@welcometothemetaverse2523
@welcometothemetaverse2523 7 лет назад
+Danny Malzahn I agree, but not everything connect. Superman hardly gets enough time to speak for himself, yet more time is spent on other people talking about him. Batman seems to be developing well, but a lot of things are left in vague. Unless you read the screenplay, nobody would've been able tell that was Robin's suit. Sure, Marvel tends to phone in a lot of stories and characters, but a majority of them had time to build identities. DC has a lot of potential, but it short hands itself in several ways.

Your words at the end really hit the nail on the head. I think most of the "haters" of the DCEU are the TRUE DC fans who want nothing more than for them to succeed and are just disappointed with the product produced. We aren't being haters, we aren't being marvel fanboys. We're DC fans who want DC and WB to do these characters justice. btw: dont let my use of the "true DC fan" make it sound like anyone who likes the DCEU currently as not a true fan, thats not what im saying. just saying that o many times when bringing up a flaw in the films or how i dont like them, I and many others are dismissed as haters or fanboys of the opposing studio when, at least with me, that couldn't be further from the truth. 1) Captain Marvel/Shazam 2) Power Girl 3) Superman 4) Wally West Flash 5) Hal Jordan GL 6) Barry Allen Flash 7) Batman (honestly though, the entire bat family. placing them individually would make my list absurdly long) 8) Zatana 9) Spiderman 10) Wonder Woman That is my top 10 super heroes. I have to go down 9 places to find a marvel hero. And the only reason any appear as high as they do further down the list after 10 is purely because the movies made me like them...spiderman aside, i really dont give a crap about marvel heroes...OK that's overly mean, i like them and respect them and know about them, they just dont interest me as much and the majority of my interest is relatively newly sparked because of the MCU I realize these are just words and I could just be making this up for all you know, but that's my honest to goodness top 10. DC failing is the last thing I want. When I say i dislike a DC movie, its because i legitimately dislike it. Not because I'm being biased in favor of marvel and am slandering DC because i'm a "marvel fanboy". But because I dislike the lack of character development, lack of logical choices, lack of interesting dialogue, bad interpretations of characters, bad motivation for characters, pot devices that make no sense, terrible/lack of romantic chemistry, easter eggs for future movies that feel forced instead of organic, bad pacing, etc. I mean, do you think the people angry at dragonball evolution were people who hated dragon ball? no. it was people who loved DB to death. note, im not saying the DCEU is as bad as DB:E. I'm not that cruel. As much as i dislike most DCEU movies, they are freaking masterpeices that put citizen kane and the godfather to shame compared to DB:E lol. i'm just giving an example to show that people who dislike a movie that has source material very well might be as big/bigger fans of the source material as the ones who like it :)

First of all, I realized I wrote Their wrong, I'm sorry. Jazen Brandon That's included in the misrepresentation of characters. Superman isn't simply what he is to be shown in the movies. And although I may know other characters better, he simply isn't that. brandon baerga Zack is to blame for a lot of things. Visually, as a director, he's fucking amazing, really, and granted some of his ideas aren't half bad. It's his free reign on the movies along with other writers that is ultimatly their downfall. Because you can tell they are fans, but of the way THEY see the characters and not the characters in general. pfl95 Although that would be great, I think Fox has assumed that role already with Deadpool and Logan. Even if DC wanted to do that even out of passion, you can see that their goal is to catch up with Marvel and win a quick buck. Marvel on the other hand, they clearly have a financial plan and gain with all of this, but what they ultimatly are trying to do is to tell great stories with these characters and having lots of fun with it creating in the end this big epic that no one as ever done before and appeasing fans at the same time. DC did that in the past with 77's Superman or 89's Superman, but besides that, although there is a bit of passion in it, if they don't put their act togheter, I can't say the DCEU is nothing more than a Monopoly. A failing one at that.

As a big defender of the DCEU, I definitely agree with a lot of these points (and I'm so refreshed to hear someone give the Martha scene the praise it deserves). As much as I enjoyed most of BvS's pieces (choppy editing, a few bad decisions, and whatever the hell Jesse Eisenberg was doing hinder the whole) it definitely wasn't the next logical step. We should've seen a solo Superman sequel, in which we see a public divided over Superman's status as a hero or a threat. Lex Luthor would be introduced as the leading figure in the anti-Superman camp, someone who is trusted by the people of Metropolis and the world, the kind of guy who will go on CNN and late night talk shows to discuss what happened. We take the time to see Superman develop and explore his humanity. We see the Superman that stops bank robberies and saves cats from trees, but maybe with less gratitude than we're used to seeing. The argument ignites further when some sort of robot comes to pick a fight with the Man of Steel, and despite Clark having no problem defeating him, it asks the question "Does Superman invite more trouble than he prevents?". Clark and Lois follow the trail of breadcrumbs back to Lex, who has continued to advance his off-the-books research to create Metallo. Superman confronts Lex, who makes it clear that any attempt to sully the Luthor name would ruin any shred of trust the public has for Superman, backing Clark into a corner. As Lois works to uncover and report the truth, and Clark manages to defeat Metallo and earn back the trust of the public, Lex decides that he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands, converting his Kryptonite robot research into his famous warsuit and taking the fight to Superman, hoping to slay the dragon he's so certain Superman is. Clark spends most of the fight on the defensive, moving people out of the line of fire and keeping collateral damage to a minimum, but Lex has him on the ropes. As he beats Superman into submission as the world watches on, he's given in to is his own rage and hatred for him. He shouts about how power and respect is to be earned, that Clark had stolen his throne as Metropolis's favorite son. Clark says that he won't get away with killing him, to which Lex replies, "Manslaughter applies to men. All I'm doing is putting down a rabid dog. They'll look at me as the hero you claim to be." Clark chokes out, "They're looking at you now. Do you think they see a hero?" Lex stops to finally see the crowds of people staring on in horror, the ambulances, the firetrucks, the reporters and helicopters, the city that he laid to waste. With his remaining strength, Clark tears out the suit's Kryptonite heart and tosses it aside, and barely manages to speak: "It's time you look to them." Clark passes out as SWAT teams surround Luthor, who sits there helplessly. As they load him into the back of an armored truck, he yells out with a hoarse voice that he made him into a monster, his hatred for the Man of Steel as strong as ever. Lois rushes to Clark's side to find him still alive. Flash forward a month, and we see a bank robbery in progress. Superman swoops in to save the day again without much trouble, and takes a moment for a question from a reporter on the scene. He answers as humbly as ever, as we see from a wall of TVs in a shop window, watched by a young black man in a hoodie with a glowing red eye, and from the television of a man whose arm vibrates through his remote, and from a dark-haired woman, staring up at a jumbotron in a city square, and from a monitor in a dark, vast room, where a rugged man watches from a large chair. "Alfred," he says, "I think it's time we say hello." We cut to black, roll credits, and halfway through we see Lex sitting in an interrogation room. In walks Amanda Waller. "It appears we have a mutual interest," she says, dryly. "I've got sixteen countries with higher bids if you're looking for military contracts, ma'am." "We're not military. We're not anything. We're just looking for some insurance." "Get to the point." "We let you out, you get back to work, you keep your nose clean, and next time you've got something that might solve our alien problem, we take a look." Lex smiles. "Where do I sign?" Ok, so that slowly became a lot more detailed than I intended, but still. We establish this world as one where there are people out there with powers, but it's Superman who inspires them to really do something with them. We start to see aliens trickle in to take advantage of a primitive race fascinated by otherworldly affairs and to check out the last Kryptonian in existence, and with them comes new technologies that fasttrack our own by a good couple of decades at least. The newfound intergalactic attention also catches the interest of folks like Darkseid, Mongul, and Lobo, and predicting that impending the threat are the Guardians, who decide it's about time Earth gets its own Green Lantern. Lex rejoins society, claiming to have been reformed, and dedicates much of his time and resources to finding new means of killing Superman, which would open the door for clones like Bizarro, Superboy, Power Girl, and Match, more robotics research that could open the door for Steel, and the potential for Lex to create or facilitate any number of classic DC monsters. Basically, Lex would be responsible for most of Superman's earthly threats. Superman would inspire most of the big 7 to become heroes and join forces to stop Darkseid (or Starro??) and the Justice League would inspire a world of new heroes who would end up forming a sort of JLU-like network, and coming together to stop Brainiac or the Anti-Monitor. It's all a great big domino effect triggered by one man's selfless commitment to make the world a better place. That's what I would've done anyway. I'm interested to see what direction they go in, and hope that they can forge a DC Universe of hope and color and inspiration in the films to come.

It's interesting that you just can't win with an ultimatum argument for these films with regards to back story films. Comic fans often complain when they get a film that's a back story, yet most of the time they turn out good and provide background on the characters to set up the next film. This video was right in that we can't just assume that ALL Supermans and Batmans are the same cause they aren't. Deadpool, Ironman, Days of Future Past, Batman Begins, & Spider-Man we're all full of backstory yet good films. DC can just skip to full of team films but they still have to be good.

DC shouldn't take all the blame because the ones who are most at fault are those who work at Warner Bros. Plus I'm pretty sure DC would definitely put good content out there that's not rushed and the reason for that is that DC doesn't have any say so when making the movies because the directors/writers answer to WB and not taking any advice from comic book writers like Geoff Johns.

WB seems to be stuck in a 90's Hollywood mindset when it comes to making these films. Maybe these movies would have seemed par for the course back around when the first Blade and X-men movies were coming out but the game has changed and fans(at least some of us) expect much better now.

Glad I'm not the only one to have noticed that WB is making these DC movies as if it's still the 90s. You could have accepted movies to be like this at that time, but today it is unacceptable. There is a reason the last DC movie I've ever watched was Batman '89 (seriously). It was acceptable for the time, but releasing films like that today and calling them masterpieces just makes everyone involved look bad.

Cinematic Universe Checklist: 1. Hold a press conference with a “Price is Right” type crowd that will go crazy at the announcement of a lineup of upcoming movies completed long after their lifetime. 2. Encourage overpaid, glorified actors to self promote for a role through Social Media and gossip sites. 3. Court prestigious directors to give credibility to the cinematic universe only to fire them once they become insubordinate to studio executives. 4. In an effort to capitalize with the current cinematic universe bubble, hastily settle for mediocre, up-and-coming directors to produce the film and then have equally mediocre studio executives push them out and re-shoot 99% of the film. 5. Hijack a social/political cause as a marketing gimmick and unleash its fanatical base to condemn any one that voices their objective opinions towards the cinematic universe.

I'd rather not. I like the CW universe, but I'd also like a movie verse that had stronger ties to the comics, and used some of the relationships and dynamics from the comics. For example, the dynamic between the Flash and the Pied Piper is amazing in the comics, but in the CW show Hartley just kind of fell to the wayside, so I feel like the movie verse could be a chance to do things that the CW verse has already moved away from. That said, I think they need to slow down, ignore what Marvel is doing, and just focus on making good, solid movies until they build to a realistic culmination in forming a Justice League. As long as good superhero movies are made, people will watch superhero movies, so there really isn't a rush.

I've stopped watching the CW shows. The writing is childish on those shows. I haven't enjoyed any of them since season 1 of the flash. Every one of the shows feels the same and the characters all act like 12 year olds. It's so melodramatic and cheesy. I appreciate a lot of things about the DC shows, but they have a lot of problems. It's a shame that in this era where decades of superhero movies have shown what works and what doesn't, and Marvel has essentially written the handbook on how to make a superhero franchise, that in all actuality, there aren't really any GOOD DC adaptations happening. The last 2 years have been especially depressing.

DC's fundamental problem with their movies is there characters. It's almost like WB is ashamed of what they are, or afraid that audiences won't accept them as they are. If Captain America, Thor, and Guardians can work on screen, anyone can. That would be the first thing i'd tell WB, it's ok to modernize and change a few aspects of your properties, but at the end of the day, you have to be able to take them to a comic fan, not Snyder, who can verify that this is the real deal. Hell, Feige said so himself, if you can't please the die-hards, how can you expect to please everyone else? Next, WB needs a genuine plan, something to build towards. With Marvel, you can see what they were doing. {Phase 1: Assemble the Avengers. Phase 2: Further develop the characters, set up some new ones, and build to Infinity War. Phase 3: Develop the characters, introduce new ones, finish the stage, and bring on the Infinity War. DC needs to have that, because it's been three movies, and i've yet to feel like this is a universe that's going anywhere.

I'm hoping that the current films' sucess will show they need to set up each character and let them have their time before mixing everything together. The second Suicide Squad being the exception since the lower tier villains don't need to have movies focusing on them one on one. If anything a team of villains getting the focus of the whole movie works great. Something the original messed up by having time focused more on characters separate from this story.

I think have an alternative ending for Batman V Superman that I think would solve a lot of the issues people have with it. Imagine instead that when Bruce is standing over Clark about to kill him, he instead chooses to throw the spear away after scratching his face. And then he gives the speech from the Dark Knight returns, the ' I wanted you to know you could be beaten speech'. And it turns out he never really planned to kill him, he just wanted the most powerful person on the planet that he could still be beaten by a human. Not only would this solidify the connection between the Batman of the film and the comic and Tv versions but it would give better closure to supermans arc that he isn't invincible, he isn't totally superman, he can make mistakes and be beaten but he can still be the hero. Obviously some changes should be made like the setup to the fight and batman's killing earlier but I think this ending would have been better personally
@thecriticalgamer8462
@thecriticalgamer8462 7 лет назад
yh, I know that is the point. I'm saying it didn't work. That sort of story could work but not in this universe at this point. The point Batman kills anyone he's already become a villain, so him not killing superman is meaningless when he's already killed droves of henchmen. You could make a story about batman coming close to the edge like that but you have to establish that he has this code about not killing in the first place, but BvS never establishes this. On the superman having an invincibility complex as you put it, I'd say his input in BvS is so minimal honestly some simple re framing of certain aspects could easily give that impression. His interceding with what batman is doing despite the fact he does the exact same thing but it's ok cos he's superman would suggest he sees himself as better than him. He thinks only he can be a symbol of heroism because he's essentially a god. Him leaving can even be seen as him realising that the symbol he thought he was never truly existed but his defeat by Batman would demonstrate that the fact he isn't invincible is what makes him superman. He shows his true face to the public and some can and will hold him accountable if he ever crosses the line. I was proposing a hypothetical shift in focus that could leave most of the rest of the movie in tact, not the mess we actually got
@thecriticalgamer8462
@thecriticalgamer8462 7 лет назад
ok, him saying the symbol was meaningless was my point, I'm saying the ending would improve that arc, my entire contention was suggesting an ending which could re frame the most of the movie without having to change it, ergo that scene is still in the movie, like i said. I think you misunderstood my meaning with that. Ok, murder is murder, that excuse is nonsense, in this film batman is a murderer, there's no two ways about it. Now that in itself, is not necessarily bad, Keaton's batman kills plenty and it's fine, it's a different rendition, who gives a shit if in this adaptation he kills people. All i'm saying is I think the material would lend itself to some more interesting angles if that wasn't the case, and it lessens his point about wanting to get rid of superman when he spends all his time killing criminals on the street.

@charleynewman5057

You said, "The thing is Batman isn't murdering them. At worst it's 2nd degree murder." Last time I checked second degree MURDER was still murder. Batman has a no killing rule, not a no murder rule, he won't kill under any circumstances. If Batman killed in people in the comics as casually as he murdered people in this movie, he wouldn't have a rogues gallery at all, and there is now way commissioner Gordon would give him that extra slack. "To Batman he isn't murdering anyone" If Batman doesn't think ripping people apart with machine guns while he is safe in an BULLETPROOF car isn't murder than this Batman is a sociopath. At least the Joker is aware he's hurting people. If Superman wanted to help he should have immediately took Batman to prison when he first confronted him. Instead he lets the criminals that Batman was chasing get away, and after witnessing Batman MURDER people, he decides to give some stupid trailer line and then fly away.
@charleynewman5057
@charleynewman5057 7 лет назад
This is the definition of 2nd degree murder, "A killing caused by dangerous conduct and the offender's obvious lack of concern for human life." If you think it's okay to commit the worst crime imaginable, just because the guy is wearing a batsuit, I seriously question your sanity.

Unsure if I worded it wrong or if I phased something wrong. I am saying Marvel is taking all the right risk with the stories they are telling. However DC is taking little to no risk. Marvel has been doing stories on all kinds of different hero's and different styles. Where DC does like 80% superman and batman content only. The animated side is a lot better for DC but the live action film side seems to think people will not want to see movies focus on any other hero's. They slow seem to have a lot of trouble giving you the build up and time to get invested in story and just have lot of fight scenes and action.

Do you even read your own comments? Jeez. Also, calling BvS a political thriller is adorable, your literally the only person I've ever heard call a burning pile of dogshit a "political thriller dealing with real life issues." What real life issues? That time when a costumed alien went to the senate and it blew up? Or when Max Landis made a giant troll to destroy a city? Oh yeah I remember that on the news! Writing this before seeing all of the video: This is what I have been saying for the past two years. Man of Steel, while not for me, was kinda good, and we should have gotten a sequel to that movie to expand on it. Insted, DC decided to play catchup by smashing 4 movie plots into one movie (the after-math of MoS, the sequel to the (yet to be made) batman movie, the death of superman, and the BvS movie). As a result, the movie feels rushed. Suicide Squde was a step in the right derection (to the point that I liked it), it still had pacing issues. Another issue for me is that for being a big cinematic universe, it feels very small. Instead of having all these movies that show us different super heroes/villains over time, we have team up movies that throw names at us like we are suppose to know who they are. We learned who Ironman was, who Captain Amarica was, who Thor was, who Hulk was, and then we had a team-up and made it look like a big world. Meanwhile, over at DC, we learn about Superman, and then we throw in Batman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Doomsday, Cybog, Aquaman, and Flash into the mix and explain them all over time in separate movies and hope that everyone knows everything already. This makes me think that everything happens in one city. This not to say that the stories ain't good. They are, but the rushing makes them have less of a punch. I just want Wonder Woman and Justice League to take their time.

Ali Mulk It wasn't Superman. It was a drunk man with Superman's power. Instead of trying to SAVE the world he is destroying it. Just take a look at how Batman reacted. Also he kills. THE FUCKING BOYSCOUT IS KILLING PEOPLE! YOU DONT DO THAT!

redhood 2266 I get what you mean, I know he's really different. But he's starting out yet, he's not meant to be the 'embodiment of hope' just yet. He will grow into that role, which is an interesting story to tell, and fits this cinematic universe perfectly.

In my opinion, MoS wasn't a bad movie by any means. It just wasn't the Superman that everyone expected. It's ok to humanize Batman since he's technically a human. But humanizing Superman? you can humanize his mask, Clark Kent, but you shouldn't humanize Superman.

I personally didn't like Man of Steel because it's basically Superman: Earth One Vol 1 without the soul of it. It just comes off as a bland adaptation to me. Everything I loved about Superman: Earth One was removed in Man of Steel and in some instances, replaced with a painfully obvious Jesus allegory which has been done to death.

I'd say Clark's reasoning for saving people is mentioned in MoS in that scene with his dad. He also talks about it with Lois in the graveyard about when his dad died.

Also I think doing death of superman in the second movie was not the wisest choice either, nor dark knight returns batman. Those are stories in comics that had to be built to, while it is not perfect, you can watch the movies of the MCU as reading a series of comics on the big screen. The DCEU feels like an argument between DC fans over coffee or beers. Honestly I am torn between scrapping it, or rather going on side characters instead of the big three to build up better then the current route. The thing is they had BVS in the animated universe years ago and it was a better iteration too...sorry for being a bit all over the place, coffee hasn't hit yet.

All three DCEU movies are total garbage and I hate them because I love DC comic books. BvS is a dreadful represantation of all of these great comic book characters, especially Superman, who in comics is the most human and gentle superhero, but in the movies is a sobbing, grim hypocrite. Comic book Batman is ingenious detective, dark but heroic, a man who changed his grieve to will to help people. In the movie he's sobbing, grim hypocrite. Pros for mentioning Morrison's Batman, it's a masterpiece.

In my experience, the people who say those kind of things tend not to be the type open to discussions. If people actually talked to each other as opposed to arguing like babies without any rhyme or reason, there'd be a lot less fighting among those who talk about these movies.

Danny Malzahn If there are people dying around him he should be helping them, that's what comic book Superman would do. When the courthouse blew up he should be helping injured people and then trying to find out who did this, not flying off to some mountains. And yes, he is a hypocrite, he wants to stop Batman for being outlaw vigilante beating people and doing lot of damage... when that's exactly what he did in those movies. And yeah, I know there was that little montage of scenes from Paul Dini's "Piece On Earth", but it was rather random. And Superman should be inspiring, movie version is not. Yes, Batman is broken, but that's my problem with him - I don't want to see him broken in his first DCEU movie, he should be at the peak of his skills. And that's my main problem with BvS and DCEU as a whole - when I look at these Superman and Batman I just don't see my favorite characters. What I see is a really dull movie treating itself too seriously. And that's just my opinion, everybody is allowed to have his own, you don't have to call anyone idiot to express yours.

Don't get Goyer. He hates comic book movies. Don't get directors who look down on Superman and what he stood for in the comics and cartoons and tv shows. Get rid of the executive producers who did the reshoots of Suicide Squad and JL. They never helped.

They aren't rushing it at all. They took 3 years to do BVS and even delayed it. Also, think about marvel vs DC. Avengers took 4 years to make after Iron Man. Justice League took 4 years to make after Man of Steel. Iron Man 2 is kinda the BvS of the MCU. It's also an Avengers prequel instead of a full on Iron Man movie. And before you comment that I'm a DC fanboy, I'm not. I know I'm gonna get so much hate for this anyways but whatever. I LOVED Man of Steel. BvS was good, but has a lot of flaws, the ultimate edition was better. Suicide Squad was fun but I don't "like" it. I didn't like the extended cut either. It added a lot of stuff we didn't need and the potential was ruined. I also love most of the MCU films besides Iron Man 2 and Thor The Dark World. So I'm just putting my opinion out there. I may be wrong but please don't be a dick about it if you correct me

MagmaAscending They're rushing it. Suicide Squad should've been in Phase 2 of The DCEU. BvS: DoJ should have stayed as a pure Batman vs Superman film without the Justice League shoehorns, Doomsday and Superman's death. A simple replacement for Doomsday would be Lex Luthor in his Mech-suit. Wonder Woman should've taken Suicide Squad's spot as the 3rd DCEU film. The 4th DCEU film should be Man of Steel 2. Then the 5th film should be Justice League. Superman's death would still happen, but it's in Man of Steel 3.

MagmaAscending it’s not about the amount of time passing, it’s about the content we receive in movies. Those three years between the first two DC movies, Man of Steel and BVS could’ve been spent building and establishing character arcs for these heroes, but instead they rushed it by releasing BVS next after man of steel
@trishahernz7809
@trishahernz7809 6 лет назад
You don't kill Superman in his second movie, you use Doomsday in Cavill's final contract. You don't introduce a grieving bitter Batman without an adaptation of Death in the Family. You don't introduce the other JL members and instead focus the two sides of Bats and Supes.
