This video easily took the most time out of any video I have ever made. I spent days and weeks writing, recording, and editing this thing, and thankfully I'm really satisfied with the results. I hope you were able to learn a lot from this video, and if you did be sure to leave the proper feedback. Thanks for watching, and have a nice day!

Great video Prez. The "Top Gun" series would be great...watching a RIO in action going through their workflow employing their best practices"

Prez, this is so helpful, thank you. I'm new to the Tomcat and new to the back seat, this series is the truth.

Love the series and I would be happy about a more advanced follow up on my favorite generation 4ish jet. The Tomcat is like steampunk, all the features are there, but have to be manually operated using dials and buttons and ray tubes. Not sure how I feel about the title, since TOPGUN is such an iconic term, you do you though. One small clarification, IFF targets without horizontal lines are not hostile, but non cooperative (usually the same in DCS though).

Yeah, I know neutral targets will also show up as non-friendly, but in DCS, unless you're doing legit mil-sim stuff it's always Red v Blue so it doesnt matter all that much. Also, I know the Top Gun thing is overdone, but it's the tomcat and it's suits the fact I'm calling this base series "for DUMMIES". I wont be making it for a little while. Heatblur needs to fix a lot of issues with the cat

Gave all your videos a good once over and repeat and found them very helpful for new to DCS user. Very interested in the TOMCAT for Topgun subject videos. Are you still considering? If so, will be on the lookout. Thanks for your work

At this point, the information in that kind of video would have to be more broad to apply to more aircraft. I had thought about it a lot back when I first made these videos, but now I see that it should be a much more general topic. I will be making stuff like that when I have the time, and most importantly the drive.

Great videos, all of them! But is the middle of the DDD really the breaking point for closing or opening rate? To me it appears to be down by the “0” on the right hand side.
@PrezDCS
@PrezDCS 9 месяцев назад
When I first made the tutorial there was no function to the aspect switch so by default the center of the DDD was the MLC filter which I incorrectly labeled as the ZDF. Now, that the aspect switch is functional and by default set to "NOSE" this is no longer the case, but you can still move it (which I typically do) to the "BEAM" position. The other two smaller dashed lines on the left would be your new MLC filter line in NOSE or TAIL ascpect. The "0" on the right is in reference to the closure when you are in STT. Doesn't do anything otherwise.

Okay, thank you for the clarification!

If you are currently jamming, does it impair or degrade your radar in any way? I know it does this in the Hornet and Mirage.
@PrezDCS

No, it doesn't.

Bit of a dangerous topic, but can the TIDs inability to display absolute vectors, explain the 1989 gulf of sidra incident? As far as I understand, there is no way of telling which way a bandit is moving, relative to the ground/carrier (not without subtracting your own velocity vector in your head). So even if a bandit is turning slightly cold, the vector on the TID would still point towards ownship, if you are flying significantly faster towards him.

It's a possibility, but RIOs were certainly held up to a higher knowledgable standard than the pilots given they had to operate the radar. It's not like the RIOs didn't know the vectors turned like that. Plus, in TWS you can actually see the target's magnetic course heading although that information may be tough to digest for new RIOs in DCS. Also, The vector direction matter more about the flight path of the target aircraft than your own. Yours will always point straight ahead, and in this head on situation with the Gulf of Sidra, the MiG-23 vectors wouldve been just about their true vectors. Sorry that was quite a long explenation.
@kilianortmann9979
@kilianortmann9979 3 года назад
@@PrezDCS No worries, thanks in fact for that extensive explanation. This is one of the first such incidents I heard about, and, maybe it's just me, but I could never quite wrap my head around it.

@@kilianortmann9979 Np, also, it should be a good thing to remember that the technology we have in game is going to behave differently from what there was in real life. the AWG-9 IRL could've been significantly more or less accurate than what DCS simulates. We just can't be entirely sure because of classified info and the fact that real life is not simulated lol

What's a good way to practice alone/offline? I'd love to practice some of this to get a better understanding of the back seat. Would be nice to have a sort of "If this --> do this" flow chart or "lesson plan" where one could go through certain situations to build a muscle memory. Also, who's got a texture fix for the cockpit to clean up some of those really nasty fonts? I know they went for the weathered look but IMO the fonts just look really cheap, especially in VR.
@PrezDCS
@PrezDCS 2 года назад
There's a few mods in the forums and the ED website to change the font on the buttons for VR users. And I don't have anything like that nor to my knowledge has anyone done something like that. I teach a lot of people this stuff, and even then I usually just give tips and tricks that I do to help them out, but you basically just have to learn all the basics and then start applying them to situations because not every intercept will be the exact same y'know

@PrezDCS

Hopefully soon. Been busy with school but I'm almost done. Plus, I kinda screwed myself thinking I could make one video with both the Pilot and RIO parts in, but I've finally decided to just make a dedicated vid for each pit. So, probably in a couple weeks. I know I've been slacking for a while

So from my understanding I do not have to deal with datalink? I have watched all your videos relating to RIO and nothing has popped up about datalink, so do I only have to turn it on and leave it alone?
@PrezDCS
@PrezDCS 2 года назад
You have to tune the DL panel to the DL source you wish to use whether it be ship-based or an AWACS. Once you have it tuned and turned on then you don't have to do anything with it, and it should just work as long as you are within range of the source.
