Esther is completely irredeemably monstrous. She's fabulous, and steals every moment onscreen, but she's terrible. And she's the main villain of the season.

I agree, like the main villains of this season are women. And also, the things those boys did are things that happen in real life ALL the TIME. The fact that it’s mostly men doing that particular horrible thing says more about gender socialization than it does about “____ hates men”. Also, the sea monster was a female seamonster, the serial killer, is a woman, etc.

One thing I love is how this show portrays Charles' anger. Mostly, and how that is not necessarily a bad thing and the narrative does not condemn him for it. Unlike David the demon, who's anger comes from being rejected by Crystal, Charles' anger comes from the terrible wrongs that were done to him. It is justified, understandable, and sympathetic. And, once he's able to address it properly by giving names to his fears, pains, and angers and expressing them, Charles is able to move on with support and reassurance from Edwin.

There are a lot of toxic relationships running through the show: Charles and his father, Edwin and his schoolmates, David and Crystal, the Dandelion Sprites and Niko, The Cat King and Edwin, the Father in the haunted house, Esther and Monty, Jenny and the librarian, as well as the Football Jocks. (so far) I read it as good/bad relationships are the central theme of the show. It's not that all the male characters are awful and the female characters are nice.

I wouldn’t necessarily classify the relationship between the Cat King and Edwin as toxic. I can understand why it could be, but it’s not as toxic as David and Crystal’s relationship. It’s more like a spectrum of toxicity. You have incredibly healthy relationships between Edwin, Charles, Niko, and Crystal, you have incredibly toxic relationships, and then you have those sort of ambiguous relationships. I think that’s what I would classify the Cat King and Edwin as. I’m not an expert, you can agree or disagree, but that’s just my thought. But yes, I appreciate how they are showing the importance of healthy relationships in one’s life.

@@duffyheitmann4311 If the cat king was a real person he'd be 100% a terrible toxic person. His initial scenes with Edwin are VERY coersive, he's holding him hostage and said he free him if edwin "made him happy." This is a fantasy show with a lot of fairytale and myth elements and he plays into that very well, so dubious morality is to be expected. Edwin committed a crime against a cat, so his punishment was thematically relevant.

@@mayaenglish5424 he literally says it’s his punishment but he’s a fair and consensual cat king. Yeah, he’s toxic, but nowhere near as toxic as some of the other relationships we’ve seen.

I'm just saying that if it was a real human interaction with zero weird magic fey creatures involved that would be time to call the cops lol. Getting trapped until you make them happy irl would be super sketchy, putting it mildly lol. Obviously in the story this is a device to teach Ewdin a lesson about using magic on people/cats, he enticed and trapped the cat, the cat king enticed and trapped him.

I also think a lot of people aren't picking up on Crystal's motivations in this episode. She is so sick and tired of dealing with David and his crap. I think it leaves her with very little empathy for any F#^kboy bull$hit. Obviously Death is a high price for their crimes, they should have gone to jail. But is Crystal going to waste time feeling bad for them? Nah.

I think the villains are pretty balanced, but I do think there are a few villains whose crimes are rooted in toxic masculinity and I think that's why they're standing out. But also, the toxicity is set up too force our main characters, particularly Charles, to face and conquer this toxicity. It's not that our guys are "the good ones". It's that toxicity is a choice, not something innate. Edwin is finally embracing his sexuality, despite all the pain it's brought him, and Charles is fighting to keep his anger under control, despite the trauma of his past. It's their choices that define them, not their gender. Crystal is going through a similar arc, but you haven't reached a lot of that yet, so I won't go into it.

30:16 If you think about it, Maren turning herself in makes perfect sense. She didn't mean to kill them, she just wanted to knock them out and steal their phones to delete the pictures before they could send them to anyone else. Then they died and she panicked. She's been living with the guilt of that this whole time, thinking she got away with murder (Manslaughter?) and trying to live her life. Clearly it's taken a toll, she's implied to have a drinking problem (She could have offered Crystal water or juice, she jumped straight to Gin!), And then suddenly this strange girl shows up asking questions about the two boys she accidentally killed, and she's panicking again. Murder solved the problem the first time right? Screw it lets do it again, what's one more death? Except it IS different and she's horrified by herself and what she has become, what she did and what she almost did.

Because they knew some guys might feel a little sensitive about that storyline and they were like, ok, now we need to immediately have the Crazy abusive woman go at Jenny with a meat cleaver to reassure men we don't hate them lmfao.

Don't forget about Esther the witch. She's definitely one of the biggest toxic characters in the whole show and definitely a female. I think there might be a little bit of projection going on from Syntell's side? I think one of the main themes of the show is abusive relationships, whether they are love or not. And looking to find something true and real among suffering and trauma

i absolutely love your reactions to the show!❤ as for the topic of almost-all-the-bad-guys-are-men, i think it would be a fair point if not for the two main characters, who are both men, and have the greatest morals and personalities in the show (maybe alongside with niko ofc) - i feel like that balances it out, plus a lot of the cases they deal with also happen in real life all the time, most often by men

Tragic Mike the walrus is one of the good guys. I think Monty does have genuine feelings for Edwin. The Cat King is a cat - he's not interested in a good/bad dichotomy, he's just going to live his life. So I don't think there is a message that male = bad. I find the sprites tiresome so I really don't want to see much more of them.

This eoisode was very interesting and well done! There are really guys out here that are this terrible! I remember a young lady sent nude pics to her boyfriend and he sent the pics to thousands of people! The school said they cannot do anything because the girl had just turned 18 before her graduation saying that she was an adult now! The young lady was getting harassed, threatened as the pics were put on the internet she later decided to commit suicide! Her parents decided to sue the school and the district but this young lady life is gone! This episode made me think about that girl and her parents!

The actress who plays the librarian stalker was also in a couple of episodes of another series made of a Sandman spin-off, Lucifer. She played a very different character in Lucifer, though.
