Honestly I don't know why they couldn't just find a way to tie ending S to Case West since we don't see them actually get out. I'm guessing they genuinely never intended for Case West to be truly canon so they didn't think about that but it became so popular it was adopted as canon despite it not coming from the canon ending. There's not really much that would change by having Chuck get stuck in the elevator trying to get out after ending S. It would certainly clear up the confusion with the endings of DR2 connecting to Case West.
