The fact that the lighting was brighter and zombies being dressed in brighter clothing made it feel like the events of the game were very unexpected and it was still a new outbreak. People out to shop for a day wear a multitude of colors and the sunlight will still look like normal day sunlight.

I don't think I agree with you 100% on the final game being 'only funny'. I think that while the comedy was turned up a lot, the zombies in general were still quite scary. I don't know if you were trying to say that the 'gore' involved in the original zombies was what made them scary, but I don't think it was a huge factor. The zombies of DR1 and DR2 were quite similar in terms of the amount of gore on their models, but the DR1 zombies looked much scarier. Their animations and sounds were scary as shit sometimes, like the rasping sound that one of the female zombies made and especially the freaky male 'running' zombies that barely made any sound.

I agree. Even after turning up the comedy aspect, it still feels like an afterthought at most. I feel like the changes were mainly, as he said in the video, to make the ESRB rating look better.

I disagree that the horror element was lost. I feel the overall feeling of being alone in this mall looking for survivors made for a great horror experience and balanced the humor perfectly. Much like Shaun of the dead.

the shotgun animation was replaced so frank could still hold his camera which is more realistic. that and theres an awkward jump in animation when you switch weapons and the camera goes from his hand to around his neck

As a photographer, I can relate to Frank a lot lol. Even if he did have a strap, running with a DSLR on a strap around your neck is an absolute pain in the ass. Swinging all around, bumping into stuff, you'd honestly have to do a weird kinda holding the camera between the shotgun and your body. The camera in one hand is definitely how you'd have to run.

I really don't like the old looking security room with the reflective walls, it's far too garish and it looks like the entire place is wrapped in plastic. I think the final version, whilst not as impressive looking actually nails the aesthetic of a white brick office lit by cheap flourescent lights a lot better than the beta build does. I understand that it looks a lot more bright in contrast but it's a lot more subtle and subdued and I think it looks more appealing. I lived in a shitty apartment block that had walls exactly like the ones in the security room and it looked just like that, the walls didn't reflect light, they were coated in a layer of thin white paint to save money, I feel like the security room in the final version works because of that. They still retained the lighting on the floor, which works a lot better than on the walls and doors. Also as much as I would love to keep the shotgun animation it's often common that small details like that are cut from games because they either don't function consistently or remove functionality in other areas, small animations like that have huge potential for bugs, glitches and exploits because not only do they need to switch on the fly but they also have to work with other animations like picking stuff up, jumping, aiming etc. it's plausible that they removed this detail to make something else work.

They were likely testing the reflections which is why the effect was overblown, I think it could look fine for the brick walls but since it was everywhere and over the top it didn't look right. The effect could've been harvested to give it a realistic dull sheen effect you get when a wall gets a bright light shining directly onto it.

Great video man. I'm actually glad that the final product was goofy and happy, that's what makes me love it. It would go from 0-100 real quick, when 7pm hit and the psycopaths outside. Then they cuts the lights and there were spec ops everywhere. The shift from DR2 to DR3 was a real let down, it became too serious. Cool games on their own, but not Dead Rising anymore.

Ironically, Dead Rising 4 is completely opposite on the spectrum. It tried so hard to be funny and forced it's humor so far down your throat it was unbearable to play.

Really interesting bit on the zombies and how much they changed. While some gore is still present, it still boils down to red spongecake inside them. The beta having things like jaws, teeth, and brain particles come out is very jarring. Have you considered implementing some of these missing features to a mod for the PC version? Sorry if this has been asked before, just curious.

I can't disgree more when you say the beta looked scarier, as a kid playing this game the bright colors made the horror elements that much scarier, I remember finding this game genuinely scary specifically because of the bright environment and happy music, and when those lights went out at night it made the night time feel that much scarier. Also not sure what he means when he says the lighting in the saferoom looked amazing. Everything looked wet and way too refelctive.

I actually like Frank's finality shotgun/gun run animation than the beta one. Why? Because with the version we got it shows me that he's an amateur as he never fired a weapon. THAT'S what I love about Frank as well as others saying the same thing. I have no issue with the finality zombies since it seems to me the beta versions are Hollywood types and the finality ones are more realistic to me.

IMO, I prefer the brightness of the zombies, rather than the generic dark colors of the beta. The bright colors of both the mall and zombies I think contrast well enough to add more horror because it looks like everyone was going on with their regular day, in this happy mall only to turn into zombies.

Some beta UI's look really nice. Also the unintegrated "wet" looking textures seemed to add a lot to the environment. I liked the points you made here dude nice video

In my opinion Dead Rising 1 is still the best of the series. I like both Dead Rising 2 & Dead Rising 3, but I cant decide If I have to chose one of these over the other, which is better Dead Rising 2 or 3?

The game has more serious tones than goofy, you perceiving the game as goofy is goofy in and of itself, the story and environment all lent itself to the serious tone, there's a good mixture but it's overall serious, that's how u do it right B)

there seems to be either a pattern or a coincidence going on when it comes to tone changes in horror media especially when it comes to horror-comedy like how the haunted mansion at disneyland was being fought over to be more scary than lighthearted, and the las vegas 2006 beta of dead rising's grim atmosphere versus the calm and vibrant one in the final game

Dead Rising Release was much better then the Beta. The changes to theme and design was much better - zombies are ridiculous in themselves, and they realized that there's next to no point to trying to make *another* grungey, dingey ass zombie game. Pretty much every revision in Dead Rising was due to the 360s limitation at the time - their desktop run builds preformed really well, but the throttled 360 tests obviously didn't come in well enough to warrant it.

Idk.... I liked the lighting in the final game more... The beta makes everything look just wet and oddly shiny... Also I like the way Frank holds a shotgun in the final game... It's pretty badass to hold a shotgun with one hand lol

Hey, did you somehow decrease the amount of zombies and move around the survivors during that opening Entrance Plaza sequence? Brian and Todd are always dead before I can reach them, and there are far more zombies.

I like to believe I have sensitivity to detail. And I honestly believe the final product was missing nothing but refined AI. Personally I was very happy with the final product. It was absolute gold. The vibrant colors and looping music created a whole other volume of awkwardness. Adding humor and creepiness. Aesthetically designed from animations to sound design. Its repulsive and attractive at the same time. Perfect example of entertainment. It was over the top and free but restricted and linear. It had this unique design of balance. Again the only thing that is missing is the pathfinding coding of the AI. And intuitive interface with the npc. To many icon bubbles cluttering one place for one button. They should make a interactive window list aka splinter cell chaos theory. When sam is in a cluster fuck of options you can hold down the button and it will list all available options that is with in reach. So you don't waste time angling yourself knocking everything and their mom over just for a dumb ass light switch option to pop up. Aka what almost makes me rage quit every damn time in Dead Rising. PS. There's methodical gameplay mechanics that were purposely chosen and placed for a particular experience from the game designer. And then there's broken suicidal triggering rage quitting chores that make you wanna go postal. Trust me. Those are entirely two different things. And Dead Rising 1 has some. If not more. Modding Community Please Patch the AI!!!! I BEG YOU!!!!!!!!

Do you think it would be possible at all to port those old zombie models into the pc build of the game? Because those models honestly looks 50 times better in my opinion than the final/default versions. Or would porting the models in the final PC build be impossible to mod back in?

The director wanted to stray as far away from horror as possible and it was meant to be a parody of zombie movies. The 360 also had some graphical limitations and I'm sure that influence zombies, textures and gore.

I love the look on the beta, I know that nobody likes Dead Rising 3 but I think that it has that ''grey'' look, it's more dark and gore. Let's hope this serie don't die with DR4 wich was so lame, although I complete every single game hehe. I think that 1&2 were the best, with that ''japanese'' feel and 3 was good, I like it technically, but the story and the characters didn't catch me. Thanks for this channel! I would like to know your opinion on DR3 and what do you think about the future of the serie, what do you want for DR5?

Capcom found that during play testing it was difficult to distinguish zombie from the enviromet, ok, I wish they had also figured that the survivor AI was broken.

I actually remember reading somewhere that Capcom deliberately dumbed down the survivors AI because they were too good at defending themselves and dodging zombies, and it made escorting them too easy.

I dont really think that capcom wanted the game to be all around scary i think they wanted it to be scary when you play it for the first time playing and finishing the game where you are low level you dont know what to do timer and all that...But beta is better
