I remember the first time I saw it. I left the game running on the main menu and went to do something else. And I was absolutely amazed to see fresh new content from a game I had beaten to death.
There's a theory that Cliff (the soldier with the machete) is Connie's husband and Dakota's father, as they resemble the people in the photo he shows Frank after you beat him. The theory states that Cliff arrived only moments after the cutscene ends and witnesses them being killed, which causes him to snap.
Seems far fetched, he would need to arrive to a fairly random spot on a road in a small time window, and then decide to go to a shopping mall of all places. Doesn't fit with Cliff's personality IMO
The prologue just shows how terrifying the outbreak was to a lot of people. It’s sad how so many people died in such a small amount of time. And even if anyone manages to get away from the zombies and reach the border of town, you’re not gonna survive the military blockades and helicopters.
Might be a stretch but honestly, the only time I've seen Dead Rising get genuinely this upsetting again (as far as I remember) is with the animated section in DR4 with the re-opening of Willamette Mall which leads to another outbreak. The idea of DR4 itself was upsetting in premise, a town that already went through so much trauma and misery only to end up going through it again is heartbreaking.
@@theheavenlyfb4071 Personally, I like this idea of hell happening all over again in the place it began but it doesn't work when the previous game has found the cure for the zombification and no, miss me with that bullshit about how the cure no longer works because of a new strain or whatever.
my thoughts exactly. a good concept that just didn't logically fit in the main story so it got carried over to the sequel. and Connie got warped into Chuck. can't be a Capcom zombie game without a type of Sherry Birkin
I always thought this cutscene was so jarring from the rest of the game. It has a completely different tone, as if Dead Rising was going to be purely a horror game without any campiness.
This cutscene always seriously disturbed me. The mother kind of reminded me of what would happened if me and my own mom had been in this situation. The fact that the little girls hat is tilted down to hide what's happening from her is sad. The fact they don't make it out really makes me sad.

That concept art with Dakota raises so many questions. I noticed that she has heterochromia (4:43) but in the 2005 trailer both her eyes are blue (4:24). So they felt like she was important enough to update her model at least once.
I think its because the 2005 videogame character they developed, Dakota, was a blatant ripoff of the then blooming child actress Dakota Fanning...... $.02
I think Connie and Dakota are Cliff's daughter and granddaughter. Because Cliff said that he heard his granddaughter scream and then he turned crazy with his flashbacks back to the Vietnam war. And the photo with his family in his wallet, looks KINDA similar to Connie and Dakota. Maybe Cliff managed to escape somehow out of Willamette, then he found Connie's car, and when he heard their screams, he returned back to Willamette, thinking that it was Vietman in a battle. But it's just my theory, who really knows who were exactly Connie and Dakota.
Surprisingly, I saw this cutscene when I first loaded the game. It was on the press start screen, and to my unexpected luck, I had to change my batteries. When I returned, I was graced with an awesome introduction to the next 5 years of my life. (I'm younger, so I didn't get it back when it debuted) .
I think what made Dead Rising so awesome for me is that it was one of the first truly serious zombie video games without an over exaggeration of Japanese culture (like RE games). The seriousness of the cutscenes and story are so wasted by the sequels, which always emphasized a lack of realism and sometimes humor. Though it's a pipe dream, Capcom Japan will hopefully return to DR, since Vancouver seems pretty eff'd at this point.
Maybe Dakota to Frank West was what Katey to Chuck Greene is where you'd have to take care of her. Perhaps the idea transitioned over to what we know now as Chuck having a daughter and having to keep her alive.
How about a video about the random guy that walks in with you to meet the gunshop owner? I always thought that was strange because he's just there randomly with you
A mother just trying to save her daughter only to fail. This scene does a really good job at setting a dark atmosphere and getting viewers interested in the game. It manipulates your emotions to make you wanna find out about these two characters and get you interested in playing the game. It's a great trailer.
Once, I left the game on and turned off my TV to go to the bathroom, and when I came back and turned my TV back on, it was playing and I was confused. 😂
I think originally Frank went into the town by road and found Dakota, and most likely saved her probably kept her in the security room but later dropped it for the current intro to show more of the town in disarray. Personally I think he should have went by road and then with Dakota find a way into the mall as the opening part of the game, actually being in the town.
This is one of the reasons I leave the game open every time I start a new game. Dead space, dead rising, and BO2 do it and its great every time. I cant count how many games in total do it

This cutscene alone used to give me nightmares about Deadrising. The game wasn't anything close to being scary, it wasn't even disturbing. But this cutscene alone amplified the horror in the game. Even i still have chills about this because how heavy it is.
I remember the first time booting this game up when I was 8 years old and seeing the cutscene, it terrified me seeing it and really creates the atmosphere of abandonment and a feeling of isolated. Regardless of why they left the cutscene in the game I feel like it’s a good little introduction.
I bought my 360 for this game. I first saw this cut scene as I was intrigued to see how many zombies were going to appear in the parking lot intro screen. The cut scene seems quite out of place and very separate from the main story. Stipo, your work is excellent and I encourage you to make more content please.
When I originally saw this when I was really young, I don’t think I had ever seen something scarier. The zombies, the burning buildings, the young girl, and it’s so different to the more comical tone of the rest of the game. It reminds me of the new RE2, especially the zombie that attacks them first and the truck. I also used to think that the little girl in DR2 was her lol
Amazing how you're still making videos on DR1, one of my most beloved games on the 360. Don't know how much longer you can keep making content on DR1 but keep em coming! 🤘
WOAH so the original story could've been like deadrising 2's story! That's why the zombie they run over is an asset in deadrising 2 right after you leave the elevator.

I definitely think that they were planning on having Frank save her and then decided to have him focus on reporting and the truth. Makes so much sense with the second one being about saving Chuck's daughter. Great video.
Connie and Dakota are mentioned actually, when u kill the hatchet man AKA cliff when the camera pans to his wallet and he explains what happened to his family there’s a pic of his family and it’s him Connie and dakota
These kind of videos are called attract mode videos and play after a set amount of idle time on a main menu, they are most commonly found in arcades as they are designed to attract players to put money in the machine, why Capcom did this with a home console game instead of having it play automatically when you start the game is unknown to me.
The same reason tons of other video games have openings/game sequences that play after a certain amount of time in the start menu. Games that come directly to mind for me are the Resident Evil games.
No, this is a cutscene, specifically a title loop cutscene. Attract mode is specifically showing gameplay. It already has auto-new-play like modern GTA, but just like those games you need to press start, so it already has what you're requesting.
As someone who has played the game on 3 platforms, got all achievements and accumulated i don't know how many hours in the game, i have not seen this cutscene even once. It's interesting that even to this day so many things are still found within the game. Some more obvious than others of course. Thanks for still making videos about Dead Rising.

I remember playing this after my dad got it when I was around 6 or 7. My dad wasn't in the room and the cutscene started up outta nowhere. I was scared shitless and had nightmares for weeks. Now I'm a proud Dead Rising fan binging videos on a channel purely dedicated to Dead Rising.
My theory is that It may have been produced as a reference for the tone they wanted the final game to have, something the dev team could look at during development to ensure they didnt deviate from it as gameplay and story was being added
I thought the cutscene was more depressing and sad rather than amazing, but it’s nice to see the amount of knowledge you were able to share with us from this cutscene alone.
I wanna thank my habit of leaving games on the menu screen while I do other stuff in the same room for helping me find this cutscene. Can't remember if this happened on the first day on not long after, but it was so early that your video is where I learned that this what somewhat hidden and that many people had not seen it. I love when games have that ability, your friend will tell you something like ''man, remember when such and such happened?'' and you're left confused cause you have no idea who the characters he's talking about are.
I’ve seen this many times, as I would always load the game up, but walk away and do something else. But I always saw it as a pre rendered trailer, never looked at it being a prologue. Cool theory

Maybe they were meant to meet up with cliff and cliff could have been in the military of some kind or could have had some type of rank or link to the military and was nearby. Incredible Video!❤

I only saw this cutscene for the first time a month ago when I booted up the remaster and went to get a drink while it loaded. Came back and was a little spooked since I’ve been playing Deadrising since 2009
This whole video I was waiting for you to mention Cliff’s death cutscene where he shows Frank a picture of his family because I’m pretty sure Connie and Dakota, or at least two people who looked very similar to them, were in that photo with Cliff. Then Cliff talks about seeing his daughter/granddaughter getting mauled by a horde of zombies? Much like in the prologue cutscene. Has this theory been officially debunked or did you just forget to include the one thing that does tie Connie and Dakota to the main game (outside of them appearing in Frank’s notebook)?

I've seen it since very beginning. I always assumed they're related to Chuck Green and little girl was Katie but they're not. They're just random characters and that's all I know.
It's weird hearing this as a hidden thing, I tought waiting on the title screen for a cutscene or 2 was common knowledge for games, at least this explains why I never saw those 2 again and I just "wrote it off" as an introduction meant to show the level of threat a horde of zombies can be for the defenseless
i remember in the LP of this game me and my friend did i discovered 2 things on that play through: there was a cutscene for beating Carlito in the tunnels which is essentially him crashing, but i never knew about it before as i never tried killing him before. then there is this cutscene, we saw it after finishing the LP and we were both surprised that we just never knew about it before.
I remember watching this many times as a kid. I remember trying to save every survivor and keeping inventory via the manual that came with the game Connie and Dakota are listed as survivors in the manual so I thought there was some way to save them. If only…
As a teen in middle school when this came out I looked everywhere for anything about dead rising. And man this was one of the first ones I saw. But hearing about the concept art and possible stories it amazes me. Cause of the fact I was drawn to this as a teen and by the time dead rising two came out I got my first xbox

this freaked me out when i first saw it when i played the game it still does and i now wonder if my dad (which use to play this game) even knows about this
Maybe the original story was that frank actually lived in willamete and that frank knew/was related to Dakota before everything happened. So that instead of waiting for the helicopter to return the original was that his old friend, who helped him to cover the wars, would be able to sneak into the city, with the mall being the original meetup for them.
Back in the 2000s it was common for every game to have some kind of cinematic or maybe a trailer that would play on the title screen if you left it for a minute or so. It was an evolution of the demos that games on 3rd - 5th gen consoles would play on the title screen, which were themselves derived from the demos that arcade cabinets would play to entice players to spend their money on them.

I never thought that much about them besides the fact that it's another intro tp what you're getting into. But this is always intresting to see things like this "The Thug" from "The Hood"
