Hearing Twinkle Twinkle little star again gives me nightmarish flashbacks to 2008 lmaoooo. I legit can't wait for this remake !!

Yeah but I wish it didn't sound like an Asian lady trying to sing Spiderman. The first thing that jumped out at me was the singer must be Chinese or something, took me out of it.

You dont see much devs previews goin THIS into the nit & grit of design, shows how much passion they're putting into this. Dead Space is a true horror classic and im glad to see it a sick coat of paint

This is fantastic. I think you should consider that the muffled audio through the obstructions should be mixed with the repositioned audio so that it sounds more natural. As it is now kind of just sounds like the source itself is moving, rather than being around a corner

100% agree. Right now it sounds like the sound is coming from the corner, instead of around the corner. They could simply move it a bit more away from the corner. There are ways to make it even more "realistic" like how sound would actually bounce off the walls and make you think it's coming from the opposite direction (which happens in real life often, ever heard the sound of a plane bounce off a tall building the opposite direction it's coming from?) but I don't think that's necessary

Exactly. Sound in this way is like light - the more bounces the more diffused it gets.

I doubt they can do that, they even established this tech is expensive and needs to be used sparely hence updating less often than the sound itself

So stoked for this! Original came out during my high school days. Such a great homage to other sci-fi/horror franchises. Dead Space introduced me to so much cool stuff. The echo of that feeling has officially come back watching the updates on this game. Can't express how amazing it is Dead Space is getting a fresh coat of paint while maintaining the structure of what made the Ishimura so haunting.

5:12 Call me picky. As the door is closing, I’d expect the singing to gradually transition from obstructed to occluded. But now it sounds like it changes suddenly from on to off. Hope to see that get improved in the final product.

You are not picky i think. And I felt bad when they show this as a new tech thing. I can see how game industry is very fell behind on sound design. They are underestimating audio

I agree; maybe they could add a portal close to the opposite side of the door that has audio play really low when the doors are closed, but is just about audible like you're putting your ear against the door. Much like how they did it with the windows, just more subtle.

@@jgsw563 My guy, the new tech wasn't about the Door closing and getting occluded, the new tech was mostly about the sound bouncing approximation. Its not hard to do a gradual transition from obstructed to occluded, when ever a door close event is initiated, I would play the timeline where the Obstructed to occluded volumes are animated.

When I first played Dead Space what most got me was the sound ambience, wich really put you in a claustrophobic and paranoic state of awareness. Now imagine how many times that sound experience will be multiplied with this kind of improvement!

The fact the developers show us an in depth view of their systems nearly a year before final release is a testament to how transparent and faithful they have been for this legendary gaming series. I've played the 1st Dead Space 3 times and all these audio upgrades are making me emotional!! The remake is gonna bring a whole new experience; from audio, environment, and enemy changes, I seriously cannot wait till the releases

Have you tried perhaps aggressively shelf filtering the mid to high end off sounds instead of disabling them entirely when a door closes? low frequency tends to travel through walls, and lowering a high shelf doesn't make that warpy sound that a low pass filter sweep would as it lerps in

You should add reverb wet/dry per distance to the sound also, the further away you are the more reverberation, it should sound clearer as you move closer.

I love all things dead space (even 3) and this makes me so happy. I remember playing Dead space 1 so long ago,and now it's getting a remake. I'm crying tears of joy.

We're truly spoiled to have these incredible devlogs showing all the hard work going into recreating one of the best horror games ever. Everyone at Motive should be proud of the work they're doing and know that we're grateful for all the transparency. I feel bad adding a critical note, but I'd like to add that I agree with the comments that fully silencing sounds behind a door seems like a bit too much. Getting an audio hint of something being behind the next door can be an amazing source of tension for the player. Without it, I fear the Ishimura might feel more like a collection of isolated rooms and corridors, rather than an interconnected ship. I think it might be worth playtesting a slightly less heavy-handed oclusion setup - say, having windows allow through a mix equivalent to about 20-30% of the source audio, and doors allowing 5-10%.

Sounds great. I am left wondering if this is the most efficient way to do sound and what is being leveraged to do this. The current implementation looks a lot less automated (and expensive) than expected. Would love to see more behind the scenes. Not sure if this is using any of the new 3d software Microsoft has developed for their console/systems, or if the PS5/Sony tempest engine implementation would create a much faster/easier process by offloading tasks/automating them. If this is PC design first then I could see the advantage in the process, but later iterations and improvements would be expected by moving to external items in mentioned platforms.

I'm hoping they will do that. There's no way this remake won't be successful. By remaking DS1 they have a solid foundation on which to remake 2 and 3, so it shouldn't take too much time, maybe 2 years each.

One thing that should definitely be added is recoil/aim sway. It would be neat if it was connected to his heart rate as any shooter will tell you that high heart rate will affect accuracy and cause tremors in hands when you’re aiming and it will definitely add to the survivor horror aspect of it

Your sound is blocked not immediately after the door is closed, but after the sound that it is locked. That is, in fact, the door is already closed, but the sound is still going on.

Audio is very important in horror games like Dead Space. With what you're doing with the audio, this remake will be a more horrifying experience. Also every time I hear that version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, I always get flashbacks of that E3 trailer back in 2008.

I love this but I have an unrelated criticism. Why are there so many warm colors? Ishimura had a very bleak, grey and cold aesthetic.

I'm reminded of creative's EAX sound where occlusion was also taken into account and was incredibly well implemented in their games even with EAX 2.0 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-it5AcT3BuTU.html Thanks for worrying about the sound!! Since the days of EAX 3.0, 4.0 or 5.0 the sound has not improved much in games! Gaming with EAX 5.0 has been the best thing I've ever heard. Now with Dolby Atmos the sound is supposed to outperform EAX 5. Will Dead Space Remake support DOLBY ATMOS? Thank you

I feel like this is slightly wrong. My experience with ships has shown me that heavy bangs on steel travels practically through it due to the reverberations making the sound itself carry. Depending on the size of the impact/bang, the sound can carry through dozens of meters away through closed bulkheads.

it's not a very physically accurate approach, but sound simulation is a very complex issue that games can't really afford to budget much performance to. The resonance of the metal is a great point though. Sound should probably bleed between rooms a little more. maybe they could do convolution reverb using a large piece of metal being struck as the impulse.

@@Rhodochrone I didn't even consider how complex it was, thanks for that view. I just had my immersion broken immediately in the remake, because like in the original game they showed the sound comes through the steel although it doesn't sound right, but you immediately know its not far beyond that direction in the bulkheads. It's like that in real life too and it is immensely helpful for solving problems before they become deadly problems.

It might even hurt me hearing that, yes. That's why it is not too easy for me to write comments like that. But on the other hand I just need to express my feelings and thoughts on this because in a way I am hurt myself seeing this here. The dead space remake is meant to be something special for me and it is just not exceeding my expectations yet. Be honest: Even if it only comes out in a year: The general graphics built stands. But is this really enough for a 2023 next gen only game? It partly looks almost exactly like the original...

Only thing I'm worried about is a talking Isaac for this. The rest, I'll hope a branch of EA doesn't botch. Battlefront 2 was a Goddamn joke. I really hope your team didn't mess this up. The original is a masterpiece. You guys are just sound and obviously know what you are doing. But that's not what I'm worried about. As sound, you have no decision of Pay to win tactics and narrative changes.

Dead Space should continue like the Resident Evil series. ​Dead Space 2 and 3 including DLC after this then Dead Space 4, also we want Dead Space Extraction, Dead Space Ignition, and mobile one remake for all platforms. Make John Carver's own story game. Make games out of those 5 novel books. You guys have lots of possibilities and potential. Make us Whole. I also want Dead Space animation movies, tv-series, and live-action movies just like Resident Evil. Please make Dead Space great again. Continue the journey.
