Hands down the best on-rail shooter ever made. Intense action with characters and plot to spice it up, with staple horror elements of Dead Space. That starting level as well, the twist was really good. Its amazing how they managed to build up atmosphere like that for an on-rail shooter, since it works its way to the action horror, not just toss you into it. As Ross from Accursed Farms put it; You don't need great graphics to create atmosphere, just good art direction.
My favorite part of this game was the Marker influence sections. You couldn't trust your characters eyes. Things would pop out of nowhere, then vanish just as quickly. But even though the creatures may not always be real, they could still hurt you.
I hope you do a retrospective on the comic and animated film(s) . There was an absolute plethora of background material for the first game. I'm enjoying this retrospective immensely as a big fan of Dead Space.
@@AvalancheReviews You should play the Dead Space 2 dlc as it wraps up the arc of the characters from extraction. It's very emotional and has a quite shocking ending.
If you are interested, you may want to check out the history of Dead Space by StopGame (the link is here: ru-vid.com/group/PLZfhqd1-Hl3Bf7C92EcT09itrLjY1xwX6 It covers all the games, books and so on. Although the videos are in Russian, you can use auto-generated subtitles.
The ironic note about your little finger twitch throwing off shooting is actually something true to actually shooting handguns, for example pulling too hard or not hanging the first part of your index finger lined up just right will cause your shots to land up, to the left, or to the right of where your aiming. Even the stiffness of your wrist affects your ability for follow up shots, and with ballistic blow back weapons (like semi auto handguns) limp wrists will actually cause your handgun to missfeed and jam
That's a pipe's dream, basically a miracle if that happaned. As long as EA handled this franchise, little to nothing ever gonna change for the better...
Yeah I really rather people making videos like this spend the first 30 or so % of the video talking about stuff in a non spoiler way, then at a certain point, go "go watch or play this" and then just go full out for those of us who already know.
I love that you're doing all of the spinoffs too. Dead Space 1&2 are two of my favorite action horror games of all time and I cant wait to see what you have to say about Dead Space 3. These Retrospectives are some of my favorite series on RU-vid, Keep up the good work man.
Its weird because your whole series of retrospectives started right after I first played the first game. I played through the first two and then most of 3 with my friend a few weeks ago. This just came out and I got my friend to come back around so we could finally finish DS3 earlier this morning.
I absolutely loved dead space extraction. It was my first and only dead space experience and I think it worked very well as a stand alone game. Also the Wii is awesome.
Playing this on wii was the best. Such a good different experience. Thanks for covering this! I am going to gladly help out you patreon. We have many similar likes and ideals towards horror games.
Yeah I'm confused on how adamant he was being on this issue. This issue if anything is that it's too precise. Like it moves where you point out and if your aim isn't steady that will be reflected in the position of the cursor. If it's jumping around that's an issue with interference in your set up but I never had that. Also the Wii motion plus literally has nothing to do with the IR aiming or improving it. That was all about rotation and yeah that was needed but not for this.
Seriously the wii had some of the best IR control I've ever used...I don't understand his issue...hes being ridiculously bias here and it shows badly...
Replaying this game made me realize how smart the storytelling was and I never appreciated it before. Certain characters act way more suspicious than I realized initially. The fact that every character starts to go nuts once they get out of Lex's general area isn't really pointed out to you. I always wondered if Nicole was a marker head oh, and she certainly takes way more of an interest in Lex than she should. I have got to figure out how to play the DLC in Dead Space 2 that clears up what happens afterward
This was a great watch as well. This is the only dead space game I haven't completed but you did it real justice. I know your review of three is coming but I look forward to it, you give the games you review their worth and your effort, and for that, whatever your view is I hope your dead space journey was a good one and well remembered.
Hey Jared, just gotta say thanks for keeping me entertained with your long form RE and SH videos. In the middle of redecorating my bedroom and your videos save me from boredom.
I adored this game. Surprisingly good for an on-rails shooter. Branching paths that actually matter (as opposed to something like Ghost Squad), etc Also, the main character's girlfriend, Lexine, was an absolute doll. Best girl.
Terrific video as always man! Loving the DS Retrospective. Extraction is a pretty awesome game, and probably my favorite on-rails shooter. Dead Space is an excellent series that I really wish had more entries. Looking forward to what other entries in the series you check out and how you’ll look back on a now dormant franchise.
What a brill little game, i had dead space 2 on ps3 and you got this included with some editions of the game, did you know dead space 2 has a dlc campaign called severed, adds an interesting pov to the game, great work my dude
then im a legend, because years of playing almost exclusively rail shooters in arcades when i was little gave me surgical precision on wii shooters. and using the wii zapper improved THAT. you said youve had wrist injuries before. then sucking at aiming is on you, not the game.
I just finished Dead Space 3 in response to your retrospective about two weeks ago after owning it for years and never touching it. Now I'm ready for the rest of your videos after seeing it all start to finish.
I remember playing this game back in the day on the Wii. Overall enjoyed it but ultimately moved on. This video was wonderful man and brought back old memories. Thanks and keep kicking ass :)
I remember thinking that this was one of the best looking games on the Wii at the time. I really enjoyed it alot more then I thought I would when I got it back then, but was really into Dead Space at that time, so more of it was amazing! Great video!
Damn, Lexine is now competing with Ellie for Deadspace waifu in my heart. I like her eyes a lot (just like Ellie's), probably because of how dark they are, framed by thick eyeleashes and how lively her face seems.
For a virtual character, she's pretty cute. Isaac's wife looks pretty good here too, just like she did in Dead Space 1. Too bad in DS2 she looked fugly for some reason.
Oh, it was. Characters and events match up pretty well. Explains things like why the batteries are removed and on the floor and why the Asteroid Defense Systems was offline.
@@557deadpool You people are confusing flagship spinoff with narrative spinoff. This IS a spinoff of the MAIN SERIES. Its not a numbered game, hence its a spinoff.
Played through this on wii with a buddy for the first time this past week and it was amazing we loved it. My buddy is a big dead space fan and he absolutely was enthralled he wanted to play basically everyday
I will say, having not played extraction, there might be other factors to consider. However, I did play umbrella chronicles with B to shoot, and i found using a zapper grip, either official or 3rd party, really helped with the jump up effect, or whatever you wanna call it. I know about maybe 3 other people still use their wii, but i thought it a solid tip.
I loved this game when it came out - they used the first person perspective on rails for some pretty cool scenes and from a gameplay perspective the game worked really well.
Dude, you totally missed out not using the Flamethrower! I know how ridiculous that sounds, but it's absolutely amazing in this game. It has a wide shot radius, allowing you to hit multiple enemies, or just hit weak points easier. It also has a lingering effect which continuously damages enemies, and this makes it perfect for knocking enemies out of their attack animations. It's also extremely ammo efficient, just needing you to feather the trigger to get nearly continuous streams with little cost. I platinumed this game, and a large part of that was thanks to the Flamethrower! Great video!
I remember an old friend and i played this years ago, i must have been like 10 years old at most, we never finished it because we were too scared of it
I'll never forget your quote when it came to why the RE Chronicles games were changed so drastically. "The didn't cater to the Wii's core audience, which would be sad... if it wasn't so true." I honestly thought this was a movie review since I didn't even know Dead Space even tried to be on the Wii.
It might just be a wii thing. Me and my cousin had a on rails starwars lightgun shooter on the Wii and it didn’t default to our 16:9 family living room TV
I really enjoyed this game, and feel like we had the same mind set. I LOVED seeing these events unfold- after only hearing and reading about them in logs. Extraction ties in so, so well with the first game, it really feels like you kick the events of the first game off yourself. That moment you're crawling through the pipes and the "twinkle twinkle" song starts softly playing- oh man. This was the ONLY game I played on the wii and I still think it was worth it. Edit: Screw that boss fight though at/around 19 minutes here. That was the only part I had problems with, it required a lot more precision aiming than the controllers could offer.
Extraction and 2 are my favourite games in the series. I was shocked how much I loved extraction. The story alone is my favourite in the series, but overall as a whole package DS2 is my fave.
So in all honesty Jared, This game was my personal gateway into Dead space. I played this during the Wii time, I believe it was after dark side chronicles that I decided to give this a go and boy was I in for a ride. Not only did I enjoy this a lot but it pretty much convinced me to try out the others. So soon after, I played dead space 1, then 2 and awaited 3 during that time. Glad to hear that you enjoyed this game too. So your gonna dive into the two films next eh? I only seen one of them, but I'll most certainly look forward to coming back to the dead space retrospective.
Also this kind of reminded me of the 2011 Thing movie, there where loads of cool moments leading up to the Kurt Russel classic and you're thinking Damn! So that's why the axe ended up stuck in the wall.
I was pleasantly surprised at how good this game ended up being. I played it all the way through in one sitting with a friend (although he fell asleep at end of the game, so I ended up finishing it myself). I remember being particularly caught off guard when you have to cut off your arm at one point in the game. McNeill was a bad-ass. Shame we never got to see more of him - he's not even mentioned in the Dead Space 2 DLC.
I was just attempting the platinum run on dead space 2 the other day and I noticed that Extraction was there to download. After finishing my run I immediately went and downloaded it to although it was a trial version. Turns out that you must have a ps3 controller to play this game and I have been using the ps4 controller for both ds1 and ds2 so far.
Not gonna lie. The jump scare on the tram platform where he turned around and the guy was right in his face got home a bit. Even with no audio. That’s some good quick tension building and payoff right there
Yeah the only thing I do to avoid sudden jittering is the candle trick. Makes that go away, but I wouldn’t recommend putting them below your tv unless you had a coffee table in front of it and some extra space.
I just finished watching Dead Space Downfall and Aftermath, really excited to see your reviews of them when they are ready! I didn't even know there was a wii game!
Thank you! We're slowly getting there. In the meantime though, I'm super happy with where the channel is. I love that it's growing, but I still have issues believing I've made this much progress.
I love it when games use the gears of war active reload. It’s an underrated mechanic that actually translates better to real life than any other I can think of. Every gun does reload a little differently, and if you’re hand-eye coordination is a little off while trying to go too fast you will fumble and end up taking longer, it’s about as realistic as a video game reload can get while still being fun and rewarding. You could even argue that the critical effect of getting a perfect reload is really just a confidence boost that makes you feel really good about that next shot lol.
Imagine if they made another game based on the events planet side. You'd get to know the colony like the back of your hand as you explore and come across worse and worse cases of murder until you got to stand your ground against the sudden explosion of monster invasion (in essence, a better mix of the motion comic and this game, except without the motion controls/ rail shooting and you don't go the planet cracker). Sure the farthest you'd go is when the colony gets destroyed by the planet chunk at the end of the first game, but I think they could pull off a long enough story to reach that sort of ending. It'd probably lean a bit more towards a madness leading to eldritch invasion like a Lovecraft story would, but it'd be interesting to get to know a city and see it degrade over time until it suddenly falls through from reanimated twisted corpses.
You’re getting into the movies next? Does that mean you’ll also be covering the comics and books? I’ve only read Salvage and Martyr, the former was okay with some genuinely creepy artwork from Christopher Sky but Martyr I absolutely LOVED. So happy to see someone grow to love the Dead Space universe more and more, I adore this universe.
I absolutely loved this game. One of the only few games that caught my attention for the wii platform. Probably the only game I enjoyed on the wii as well.
Just bought this game and dead space 1, excited as hell. I was never interested on on rail shooters until like a week ago now im in chapter 3 in dead space 1 waiting for extraction to come in. Cool series so far
That tech was so flaw that i created by Wii sensor bar with with LEDs and circuit and used 2 candles at the bottom corners of my tv and it worked wonders hahaha. When I played my Wii games
Fun fact remember the hidden message in dead space 1 if you realign the first letter of each chapters name it spells out “Nicole is dead” that it hints the fact Nicole was dead the entire time well in this game if you do the same thing that it spell “warren lies” which mean it was hinting at the fact that Warren was lying about being a unitology
i played this on the PS3 as a bonus game for pre-ordering the Dead Space 2 collectors edition. a fun addition to the game as well as adding context for the DLC that came later for DS2.
