There's no point in asking for an unreasonable/unrealistic amount because the dealership will just say no. $10K is (in my opinion) at the top end of being realistic, but the dealership probably won't accept it. @BeezalBub - you do realize 4 more zeroes means $100 Million. The total annual revenue for the average franchised new car dealer is about $60 million. If their gross profit on that was $10 million (net profit even less), they'd have to pay out their entire profit for over 10 years to get to $100 Million.

@@shawnmclaughlin7418 I had to do that too back in 2018. Bought a 2016 Ford Edge with 24,000 miles on it since someone hit and totalled my 2010 Equinox. Thank God, I hated that freaking vehicle. Took it to my uncle at the Firestone he worked at and found out the transmission was leaking. Called the dealership and said I'm bringing it back. They offered to "fix it", so I said with a rebuilt transmission? They said yes. I told them a vehicle with 24,000 miles should not have a rebuilt transmission, I want a new transmission or you're taking it back. Well they wouldn't do that so back it went. Ended up buying a 2017 Tuscon with 12,000 miles instead from somewhere else. And then someone hit it and totalled it 3 months later.

Years ago a similar but different thing happened to me. A Richmond, VA Subaru dealer sold me my 2001 Outback, and a day later called me asking me in because of a "paperwork error". Questioning them further, on the phone, they said they gave me the wrong interest rate. Funny thing was I already lined up financing thru my credit union, but the finance officer asked if I would do the loan through them if they could beat it. Of course, I said sure...lol...and they made an "error". The finance officer even played the 'he'll get fired' and the 'I have children'. Usually, when this happens, an unscrupulous finance manager offered an APR that he couldn't get approved. An honest one will already have an approval from the bank and the only thing that could ruin it is that the customer can't meet stipulations: proof of income, etc. but again, an honest dealership won't let the vehicle go until everything is verified.

In the UK a Subaru dealer sent my 90 year old mother a bill for the repair of her trade in. In law, dealers have to accept trade ins as is. They accused her of hiding damage to the bodywork, but we had a witness who had inspected it just before the hand-over. So they damaged the car, then illegally attempted to intimidate an old lady into paying for their error. Add to that the fact that they sold the trade in off the lot, but didn't pay off the hire purchase so my mother continued to be billed by the finance company. And they didn't transfer the title of the new car to my mother. And they ignored all communications for months. We had to threaten litigation, and they immediately gave in on all points. I think they thought they had found a soft touch because my mother was so elderly. This was a main dealer of a quality brand. What other trade operates like a gang of crooks?

Had they 'sold' the car to a RU-vidr, Ford would have garnered FAR MORE publicity for the vehicle than the car sitting in a lot 'somewhere'. Ford needs to be a bit more strategic in their marketing. I was accidentally sold a car. Seriously. Their demo was for sale and I was approved for the asking price which was $16,000. Once it was paid off I would have paid upwards of $24,000 with interest and all that stuff. Took the car home and the next day the dealership called me and told me that the financing company reneged on the deal. 6 months later the dealership found a bank that would take the loan. The bank negotiated it down to $12,000 with a $16,000 payoff. The reason: the odometer had more than 4,000 miles on it. Apparently 4,000 miles is the threshold for vehicles no longer being considered new by the bank. Compounded with the fact that a demo car is technically a new car until you buy it and then it is classified as a used car by the bank so you pay the higher interest rate of 5% to 8% instead of 0% to 2% that you would on a brand new car. So I got a honey of a deal that I will probably never see again in my lifetime. And that was my first brand new car.

A guy in our Corvette club had a similar issue when he bought the 1978 Corvette Pace Car. As soon as word was out on it, he placed his order, luckily it was on the dealer sheets, and he paid for it, just waiting for delivery. If you remember, the '78 Pace Car was the hottest selling item ever at that time, with prices doubling for them when they hit the dealer since there was only one per dealer. They tried to reneg on the sale and cancel it, but he had already paid his $14,000 so it was his car. He ended up with a lawyer for that AND as soon as it hit the showroom, they had installed the Pace Car decals on it, which was optional on the install, and he wanted his left off but in the car. The dealer ended up having to take them off, redo the finish on the entire car, and get a nearly impossible at the time second set of decals. Somewhere in all of this, he agreed to them displaying it for the entire month of May (or April and May) in exchange for some other things.

Many years ago, when you ordered a car with specific options, I was undecided about buying a Buick. It was the last day of the month, and the salesman was so anxious to make the sale he came to my house late in the day with all his books for options. The car agency didn't dispute the price.

I got a call from the Sales Manager Supervisor while I was driving to another dealership, that had the car I eventually bought, after walking out. The salesman made a reasonable price offer which I signed but his boss wanted to hardball me for another grand or so. I told him right there you can try to hardball me but I made an reasonable offer and walked out. I had the same thing happen while making offers on a house. I had three of them come back begging to make the same offer later on. I made several offers over the 2 years of looking for a house, none sold for more than I offered. About half sold for less and the rest were under but by less than 1000 and three or four sold for the exact amount to the dollar. Both markets assume you are a dummy, many buyers are but they do not have the sense to know when you are not.

@@toriless When I bought my present car, I dealt with what I think was their senior salesman. (He had the big desk in front of the picture window.) He was a reasonable guy, and we settled on what I wanted for the model, accessory packages and color. Then he sent me to the "negotiator", who was like a parody of a car salesman - loud, and obnoxious - and he kept insisting on a low trade in and extra charges. I got fed up and walked out, and when I got home I called my salesman to explain why I left. He asked me what I thought was a reasonable deal, so I told him. Half an hour later he called and said, "Your car will be ready Friday." Sometimes reason does prevail if you stand your ground.

I worked for a big car dealer for twenty years and the end-of-year sales push makes a shark feeding frenzy look like a Koi pond. It's utter chaos. The money on the table for the dealership can be enormous, and stress levels go through the roof. Somewhere in that mess someone screwed up. Oops. So they can either own up to their mistake, explain what happened to the customer, hope they cooperate and tell all their friends on social media how awesome they we're treated by the people at the dealership, or they can blame the customer, make empty threats that their own lawyers would never put in front of a judge, and die a flaming death on-line. The first mistake was human error. Stuff happens. Live and learn. Move on. The decision to attack the customer was an irresponsible, immature and myopic management decision that may well cost them everything. Game over.

Ad buys during the news are top dollar. The local dealer made the news being a bully to a customer and became the butt of jokes nationwide. Had they handled it with class, it could have earned them publicly worth far more than the loss. They could have bought wall-to-wall ads around the news segment because they would have been contacted well ahead of air time for a response. Ads could show the customer accepting a gift from the dealer and all having a laugh. The owner or manager could say: "Hey, sometimes we screw up big time! This guy caught us too busy selling cars to pay attention. It happens. Well, it's still end of the year and we're still busy selling cars. Come in and catch us with our prices down." They should have made the buyer a local celebrity in a way that made the dealership look cool instead of looking like whiney @ssholes.

Hi Steve, let me tell you a story about a friend of mine and a brand new 1966 chevelle. At age 21 Quince ordered a new 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle from the dealer in our small town of 4000 people. He paid the down payment on the day he ordered it and was told he would get delivery in about 6 weeks here in Oregon. About 5 weeks and he got a call from the dealer stating his car had arrived, so that day after work he went to the dealership finished the paper work and drove the car home. In a few months as most young guys do, he broke the 4 speed transmission. So back to the dealership it went for warranty repair for the transmission. I a few day he was contacted by the dealer that no parts were available for that transmission and they were going to have to contact the factory for advice. About 4 days later Quince got a call to come down to the dealership to discuss the problem with the car. When he got there 2 men from Chevrolet and the dealership owner met him at the door. They informed him that they needed this car back and they were going to take. Well of course Quince stated 'Hell No' I want it fixed. They offered to pay him his down payment back and give him the pick of any car in the Chevrolet line, including the new 1967 Corvette. After a long time of arguing back and forth Chevrolet new they were not getting the car back and were going to have to repair it. Here is the rest of the story, The car was a very special order from corp. It had a high performance 327, 4 bbl holley, close ratio 4 speed, oversized clutch, pos 4:11, 12 bolt rear end, oversized brakes, chrome fan, radiator shroud, valve covers, master cylinder, aluminium intake, chrome dip stick and tube. Someone shipped a COPO and sold it to 21 year old Quince. He drove it for years and said his fuel bill was much more than his car payment and finally sold it after blowing up the motor drag racing it in 1969.

Short version is that they had 2 cars that were externally twins with sequential VIN's and sold both within 24-36 hours of each other. The salesman called me at home in a panic later that evening and asked me to confirm the VIN on mine by looking at it in person, not on the paperwork. They sold me a brand new 1995 nissan 200sx se (msrp $13,000) for $16K and an interest so high that the total payments came up to $25K. A month after owning the car, the dealer called me to tell me that all the finance companies had rejected the financing deal, and that I was lucky because they would have to re-do the paperwork at a lower sale price. I told them that I refused to do new paperwork, and their choice was to rip the contract up (return the car) or have the dealer eat the price of the car and I'd pay them in monthly instalments. Issue wasn't just the allotment, it is that FCTP cars are contractually obligated by Ford to remain in demo service for 4 months or 2k miles. The dealer gets them at a discount. They were in violation of their agreement with Ford was the whole reason they were freaking out

Love it - have had the video paused for a couple of minutes just trying to wrap my head around the stones on that manager who really thought he was going to solve the problem by telling the buyer he "had" to give it back knowing full well that he now legally owns that vehicle. Hope that general manager got swiftly replaced.

if they want it back, they could always offer a premium to him and he could have made money if they could get him to bite. Probably would have been worth it too because having that demo model on a new and hard to find car is a powerful tool to get people to bite on placing those orders.

Remember reading about the very 1st Ford Mustang in '64 that was sold accidentally. It was sold to an airline pilot who kept it for years. It had been on display & a salesman sold it. Ford had a hissy & supposedly demanded it back. They tried everything but the owner kept it for many years. Think it was a convertible. Never heard what happened to the salesman.

My dad worked in car sales forever, eventually having a dealership of his own. Those guys have to pay interest, etc. on every car on the lot and would never NOT sell a car!! I smell a rat!! Here’s my thought- they had someone come in and they offered more $. You’re right!
@stephen3164

Unless Ford advertising gave the dealer 4 months of interest holdback money to advertise the car on their showroom floor to drive up orders - under the condition they don’t sell it for 4 months. (The Bronco SPORT is a new vehicle, but I don’t think they’re selling for full sticker. It’s a facelifted Escape. Steve made the easy mistake of confusing it with the Bronco, which is not yet in production, and already pre-sold the entire first model year. If you order one today, you’ll have to wait until 2022.) When the Mini Cooper first (second?) came out in 2002 or so, I went to my local dealer. They had 3 cars they were using as demo vehicles, and would not sell them. In fact, all 3 were out on test drives, I had to wait to drive it. They were taking orders but not selling the demo ones. I’m sure eventually they sold them, with 2,000 miles on them from the daily test drives. And they made up the carrying cost by selling accessories. (They sold the car at sticker price but made you select 2 dealer options - stripes, driving lights, pin stripes, wheels, etc - additionally. Huge markup on those accessories.)

@@Ryarios That is the opposite of what the dealer is trying to project. Many dealers advertise their demo cars as being for sale, even including them in printed ads. It brings in buyers, who can then be convinced to buy a vehicle they can sell, or order one for future delivery, or at least be added to a confirmed-prospect list. I'm sure that many even sell their demo cars early, even when that is explicitly forbidden by their contract with the manufacturer. They just delay or obscure the paperwork, or claim that it was an error.
@dashcamandy2242
@dashcamandy2242 3 года назад
@@1djbecker Demo is one thing, that's a car they slap a dealer plate on -and use as their own personal vehicle- use for test-drives to show a customer what a particular model is like. A Floor Model can be sold right off the floor, but they usually won't unless they're getting top-dollar because it's a minor pain to move the cars out of the showroom. Sales Guys will usually try to steer you to a similarly-equipped model outside on the lot because, in ideal circumstances, they can get you out in a few hours rather than having to wait until closing, move the fake potted plants and signs and stuff away from the car, get the car out, find something snazzy to stick in its place, and put everything back where it belongs. "Common sense" (I know, I know...) dictates that a vehicle NOT currently available for sale should be marketed as such - and there are effective ways to hype a model not for sale yet. Tesla, Apple, and video game companies are particularly adept at marketing in this manner. A simple "Available In Such-and-Such 2021" would suffice. The demand for this model is so great that customers will hang onto their vehicles a little bit longer, and TV and Online ads could further build the hype and announce the official "release date."
@1djbecker
@1djbecker 3 года назад
@@dashcamandy2242 This car was very likely a FCTP "program" car. You can google the Ford-specific terms of that program. The terms are pretty strict, and the vehicles are audited. Typically a FCTP car must be kept around for at least three months. For the Bronco, which is in high demand with delayed availability, the they have to be a showroom, demo or loaner car for seven months. (For a Bronco not going to be service loaner, it will be in the showroom.) If they sell the vehicle, they lose a month of allocation, which could end up being first several months with a slow ramp-up.

Not the same thing, but I used to work in a bookstore. Usually as soon as books shows up in receiving we put them out on the floor, even if it was technically before the release date (usually a day or two) and that was fine. But for books that are high demand (like the newest YA fad or Joel Osteen, etc etc etc) the publishers would flag them as Strict on Sale. If you looked it up in the inventory it would show on the screen that we had it in stock, but it would have bright red writing saying strict on sale so we had to hold those back in the backroom until the actual date. On occasion they did get put out, and if we happened to sell one it was a big deal. Corporate would be called and we could guarantee sporadic shipments from that publisher for a few months and ordering backlist taking longer than it normally would.

This same thing happened to my father (without threats) in 1986 when Cadillac brought out the new Seville. It was a huge jump, and very few existed. The day after the sale, the dealer called and said it was a mistake, they received no cares from my dad... and actually tried to rent the car from him because it was over a month before they could get another.
