Allowed? MSRP stands for manufacturer's suggested retail price, and are made under the assumption that supply chains aren't fubar. Manufacturer sales would only result in manufacturers marking up prices or there being no supply. The latter results in people reselling at even more inflated prices, or as the economically illiterate call it, scalping.

@@mangotail6808 When you base your society around driving absurd distances to get to and from your home in the suburbs while pursuing a policy heavily dependant on getting gas into your car, then don't be surprised when living expenses skyrocket. It doesn't cost much to stick solar panels on your rooftop, make public transportation and bicycling safe for commuters, and rezone the suburbs so you can walk to your local grocery store instead of driving everywhere. I say let car prices go way up. Let the market decide.

Ironically theres evidence that scalping essential items can actual help in emergencies. Like after a hurricane a lot of people will buy generators and other items in areas far away and drive them to the affected areas to collect on the huge markup. They actually contribute to the relief effort. The problem these days is with online shopping. People will buy hot items in bulk, raise the price, and mail them to you with the same shipping service the manufacturer used to ship it to them. Providing no additional value to the economy.

It's basic supply and demand. I work for an auto group and we have a supply issue (as do all the dealers around us). If we sell all of our vehicles below MSRP, WAY below the market, we have empty lots and OEM's won't be able to resupply us. Not to mention our sales people who rely on their jobs to support families, or just live, won't have anything to sell. Maybe that means we should sell all of our new stuff at a low price, and just focus on used inventory. Well, in order to get used inventory, you either buy from auction (which has skyrocketed) or you buy from your customer base (or technically buy from other dealers, but you get the point). If I can't put them in something new because I priced too low and all my vehicles are gone, then I would just be 1-for-1 swapping all my used vehicles until I'm left with vehicles nobody wants to trade for. On top of that, half the customers won't want to sell their vehicles to us because for our prices to be low, we have to buy low. Other dealers will buy the same vehicle for a lot more, because they can sell it for a lot more. Because of competition in the market and basic supply and demand, our prices have to remain high. That is not to say, we haven't been super competitive. If undercutting the dealership down the road by a few grand is an option to get a sale, we take it. Where other dealers might charge you a few grand over sticker for a vehicle order, we'll order your vehicle for MSRP (unless it's something special, like a raptor, or corvette which you only get a certain number of allocations of).

The spread of prices is absolutely insane, I’ve seen a difference of MSRP to double it. Specifically, RAV4 Primes are MSRP in Portland (and most car brands still are there, god bless ‘em) while being over $80k in Oakland CA. The difference? Portland is back ordered for as much as 6+ months with no guarantees, Oakland has stock and you can drive off same day. I got a Lexus sedan in Portland because I needed something pretty fast and couldn’t handle a Highlander for parking in Seattle while still being MSRP.

I had to buy a car because i needed one asap to be able to work. In my country the price of cars went up 2-3 times in some cases. I paid around 3k $ for a used Ford focus 2008 which 3 years ago was worth around 1.5k$ ( even though it was younger and better condition obviously). Drove 100 km with it and started noticing engine noises which were made basically by a destroyed crankshaft that needed repair, so basically I need to swap the engine now... Sometimes I feel this world is designed to just fuck you out of every cent. And before you say that losing 3k$ is not horrible in my country if you make 1.5k $ you're are way above average earner but still inflation is so high that you cannot rent a flat for that wtf

Your frustration is completely justified and understandable, but here are a few examples of services a dealership provides: Just new vehicles specifically: 1. Inspection of transport - repair of potential transport damage (scratches, broken parts, dents, etc.) 2. Pre delivery inspection and mechanical checks - removing shipping material for mechanical components (suspension blocks, ship mode, fluid checks, safety equipment checks, etc. - just to name a few things) - I've seen cars some in with missing parts, completely broken mechanical components, no fluids (oil, etc.), and all kinds of horrors. 3. Cleanup - vehicles don't often arrive clean unless you're buying a very high end product. 4. Recalls. 5. Dealing with your trade-in - believe it or not, most people don't trade in vehicles that are in great condition and require little to no reconditioning. 6. Comparing financing with multiple lenders to get you the best rate possible - yes I'm aware there is often a markup for providing the service. 7. Making sure you are aware of all rebates available from the manufacturer. Etc. A lot of the inner working of a dealership aren't understood by most people, so I'm just trying to give a little insight as to what actually happens. Hopefully that doesn't come off the wrong way. Cheers.

To anyone buying a new/used car, don't be afraid to get up and walk away at the dealership if you don't like the price. I used to sell new/used cars for a living, and recently my wife wanted a 2021 Rav4 Prime, which is a very hard car to get right now. The dealer tried to tack on an extra $5000 once we sat down and drew up the papers, and as soon as I saw the extra charge, we got up and started to walk out. The manager got butthurt that we didn't even try to negotiate, and I told him to knock off the 5g's or we were leaving, and he did. The point I'm trying to make, is they will try to gouge you, but it's up to you to get the price to where you want it. Don't be afraid to go elsewhere.

The funny thing is, the sales people at the dealerships are up on Facebook essentially trying to explain away why car prices are being marked up $10,000 plus over manufacture suggested price. What people don’t understand is, without customers… They make no money. If you’re going to buy something, buy something directly from a local seller and not a dealership. Even if it has a few issues that need fixed, you’re going to save money over what these dealers are charging. If you don’t want to do that, simply get the car you have fixed and wait till the market collapses. Just think what happens if the market just goes back to normal… that car you bought is now worth that less you paid over sticker value, even if it’s a one or two year old model. I’m surprised that banks are even giving the loans out knowing that these vehicles values are going to collapse as the market normalizes. I’d imagine at least some of them are requiring quite a bit more for down payment. As, you have to wonder how many people are going to default purposely. Just to get out from under the mountain of debt that I created by buying a car in this current market.

Part of this is manufacturers too. The dealer takes the car into inventory for a factory price and they provide an msrp. BUT the dealer can of course charge more to make a profit but you can talk them down to msrp, but any features they add or work completed on the car gets added to the price. If a used car comes in needing an oil change or new tires, that cost gets handed down to the customer even if they didn’t request it.

Yup, ran into this when I was purchasing my 2021 Harley Davidson Panamerica. The mark up the stealerships were charging was ridiculous. I went to the 3 dealers nearest me and walked out laughing each time. Their long term vision was just so completely short sighted, not realizing that the ill will they were generating from the public was reflecting badly on not only on their dealership, but on harley it self, not to mention snuffing much of the excitement around the new model. I lit all three of the dealerships up on social media and ended up getting a call from Harley's corporate customer service. They put me in contact with Hale's Harley Davidson in Mansfield who actually honor MSRP and even gave me a discount on all the accessories I wanted, needless to say I'm telling everyone I know to go to THAT dealer instead of the ones in Cincinnati. Now none of the bikers I ride with are going to do business with those dealers ever again, that's 100+ lost potential sales just so they could make a little extra on the one or two allotted PanAms they got. The mark up practices of dealerships are what killed the Focus RS for one, second the practice is gaining more than normal negative press with the general public. All it's going to take is a politician choosing this as their "Thing I'm Going To Save You From" and poof, all the protections to the dealership model are gone, people vote on things that don't actually impact them all the time. In the end, the dealerships will be to blame, but I'm sure all the "bUt BaSic EconOmiCs" plebs will end up saying something along the lines of "No, it's the youths that are wrong".

Manufacturers aren't scolding dealerships, there was a report in AutoTrader about 2 weeks ago talking about how manufacturers are rethinking their inventory practices. Meaning they most likely are not going to saturate the market with inventory like they were before. Instead of them investing so much capital to manufacture a ton of units, they're going to manufacture less vehicles so dealerships can continue to capitalize on gross profit as well as manufacturers not having to worry about thousands and thousands of unsold units sitting on dealership lots aging and then having to invest more capital in rebates and incentives to help dealerships sell their cars

I was originally looking for a higher trim Accord Hybrid and even those were going for $40k. It would take me less than 3 years to make up the difference from fuel cost alone.
