Hi folks! just wanted to add to this to say that on the Friday, locals did take in tourists into their homes and even trekked out to provide food & blankets on the Saturday, the locals did more than the government!

Gotta love how tragedy brings out the absolute worst in hotel and store owners in this story. There's times like these when you as a hotel or store owner can really make a difference in a horrible situation like this by giving families with babies or small children or elderly that don't have money free rooms or blankets or supplies, but sadly not all people care about their fellow man and would rather benefit financially from others suffering, very sad.

I was driving from Chicago to Nashville this past March and while driving through Kentucky, it began to snow, and I mean snow. It was shocking how fast it came on, just like described in the video. I was prepared for a long, slow night of driving, but there were absolute idiots passing me at insane speeds of 70+ mph and knew there was going to be an accident. I will never pull off to the side of a highway in conditions like this. You couldn't even see the lines, you are almost guaranteed to be run into by someone. I crawled to the nearest exit and got off, spent the night in my car. I was warm, had snacks and drinks from the 24 hr gas station and was safe.

Sad story, I live in Russia in Siberia, for me those conditions are usual, but for Pakistan it was an unexpected extreme situation, and "unexpected" is the main problem. In summer we have temperatures about 20-30 degrees Celsius and very rarely close to 35. In winter time it's often between minus 20 to minus 30 degrees Celsius, but sometimes close to minus 40. So, we are good in dealing with different weather conditions (not really good in extreme heat though). Firstly, we siberians are not who do not afraid of cold, but those who dresses appropriately to weather conditions, this is the most important rule. Secondly, you must be prepared, take some food and water, take a lighter with axe and rope, have simple spare parts for your car with you. It's simple and everybody knows it in Russia (but of course there are some people who think they don't need to follow these rules and every year a couple of those dies in Yakutia region, which is a little bit to the east from Siberia and it can be colder than minus 50 degrees Celsius there easily). I wrote a lot and it might be not clear for many, since I haven't been practicing English for years, but always be prepared guys! Take a couple of minutes to explore the region where you planning to go, explore the road in google maps or other app, have all the gear you need and might need. Learn on the mistakes of others and on such unfortunate tragedies, don't try to make a new tragedy just because you unprepared for weather. For thousands of years people were trying to study the laws of nature, don't disappoint our ancestors.

@@thepartysjustbegun5557 Well, we even have students from africa, they studying in university for 4-5 years and after first winter they are adapted to cold pretty good. You just getting tired of winter because all the time you have to wear multiple layers of dress with big jacket, big and heavy boot's, daytime in december is only like 5 hours. When the winter is over you even feel yourself lighter because of the clothes you are using. And one interesting thing, the higher the humidity and stronger the wind the faster you loose your warmth, so it's better to have lower temperature, but with no wind and low humidity than higher temperature with wind and higher humidity.
@spiritcrusher4506
@spiritcrusher4506 Год назад
@Justin Loveday no, but there is a law about not leaving people in dangerous situations, so, theoretically you can be punished for not helping people in need, but everyone is innocent until proven guilty. North regions of Russia are one of the less populated places on earth, people are strong and very helpful there, you can count on them, I live in Krasnoyarsk, the population of the city is over 1 million people, so we have bad, good and all other types of people, just like in all other places in the world, most of the time you rely on yourself, but if asked many people will help. By the way, almost all laws are the same in all regions of Russia, there might be only minor differences, but it's not having any effect on everyday life, I have like 4 thousand kilometers of Russia to the East and to the West from my city, I can go anywhere and all laws, law procedures will be completely usual and understandable for me because we can have different laws in different regions, but every law must be compliant with constitution and constitution is the same for all country.

People abandoned their cars at certain points because they ran out of gas to stay warm and certain parts of the interstate you could see cities and try to walk if you weren’t too far. The stores and hotels would’ve never had done something like this EVER here! If anything they gave things for free.

CO2 isn't the big danger, it's CO or Carbon Monoxide. Our lungs can easily exchange out CO2 when we get fresh air, but CO builds up in the bloodstream and can remain bound to your blood for days. This makes you think that you've gotten safe because you've opened the window for a bit and got some fresh air, But the amount keeps building up and up until you eventually become delirious and die.

I live in Colorado, USA, which is a state well known for snow and our ski resorts. But even here, where we all keep “winter packs” in our cars, bad things happen. We were hit with a “bomb cyclone” about 5 years ago. Within a couple of hours several feet of snow had fell but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was that it came with winds in excess of 100mph, way worse than a normal blizzard. Trees were snatched straight out of the ground and you could only see a foot in front of you. Cars were trapped on the interstate for hours and the winds were so high that 18-wheeler trucks were literally being blown over on their sides. Snow cats couldn’t even get to the ones trapped.

Still be careful with that...Storing them in the car long-term is not necessarily a good idea, especially in warmer months/climates. Candles melt in high temp and can become just a puddle of wax or mess up your other emergency supplies. You also still need to crack a window to keep giving the candle oxygen and keep smoke from building up in the car, and you have to be sure to stay awake to watch the flame. It can get knocked over, you could turn and flip flammable material on it, and wake up to a car fire. Cars are also contain some materials that give off hazardous fumes if they do catch fire. It's not a terrible idea to have on hand, but it still comes with risk if you don't know what you're doing. Also keep it in a coffee can or similar non-flammable container when it's burning to decrease the risk of accidental fire.

On the theme of weather disasters getting a lot of people caught by surprise, maybe you could cover the floods in western Europe in 2021. While a lot of the places got the time to prepare once the threat was mostly reduced to a coming surge of water, there were a lot of places that got caught by surprise with a highway full of cars flooding, part of a town being erased from the earth in a landslide, and many many towns and villages getting caught in the surging waters. Not to mention a death toll unacceptable for a disaster that pretty much announced itself beforehand.

Keeping the engine running (heating) was no option as the car only had a 40 liter tank. A car on idle consumes 1 l/hr. Thankfully the german automobile club came along with motorcycles and distributed hot tea and blankets (for free). It took me 11 hours for a 300km ride to get home. No casualties. Small hint: keep a blanket and cookies in your car. And - eat snow if necessary. It is water…

I'm from the upper peninsula of Michigan and I can tell you, the cold is no joke. We've welcomed strangers into our homes during bad weather. I can remember being a kid in the 80s and more than once we had strangers sleeping in our living room for days sometimes during horrible snow storms. People freeze to death easily, or die in other ways during these storms and it's no joke. Then again, this is Michigan, not Pakistan.

During heavy snowstorms always keep your vehicle exhaust clear. Also keep any intake and exhaust pipes or vents for your home heating systems. Keeping some emergency candles, matches and a lighter, a few of the thin emergency space blankets and a pair of scissors in your vehicle can save your life. The heat from a candle can actually help to keep you warm, space blankets help you retain body heat. In a worst case scenario you can cut up portions of your vehicles interior with scissors to use seat padding and material to insulate yourself, make foot coverings, etc. A few items that will fit in your glove box or console storage could save you. Add some energy bars and a gallon of water and you up your odds of survival.

I am so glad you covered this! I might never have known about it otherwise. I do not know much about Pakistan and what weather is usually like there, but I will say I live in the far south of Canada (like if you went across on a map I'd only be about 3 hours north of Barcelona) in an area that has a lot of very diverse pockets of weather because of it's continental geography that causes a lot of storms that tend to concentrate over some areas and not others - creating pockets of relatively heavy snow and cold while the next town over might have no snow and be above freezing. And I do wonder if the mountains and continental climate cause a similar effect in Pakistan, perhaps even worse. So I totally get how people just wouldn't know there was that much snow and would get caught. It is very sad. And also very sad no one gave them somewhere to stay. I would like to think that perhaps they just did not know it would get that cold and that exhausts would end up covered...I would like to think they would have been hospitable and kinder if they thought there was a chance the storm was deadly,

This is why you should ALWAYS, ALWAYS, during the winter months, keep your cars stocked with extra blankets, pillows, water bottles, and protien bars, snacks, beef jerky, & MRE's...& even small packets of instant coffee and hot cocoa. I would also suggest having a cord of firewood and firestarter sticks. I also keep flares and I'm planning to get a solar powered charger station, so we can charge up our phones in case of emergency. Wow. I didn't know about this and promptly read the available reports and information. Weather warnings were essentially nonexistent, the roads should've been closed two days prior to the incident, parked snow removal equipment in ways that blocked more traffic and didn't staff them, no disaster planning or response meetings occurred even after officials were warned, there were still consistent tourism advertisements urging people to come up despite the ongoing storm, no traffic control whatsoever, the hotels in the area are owned almost entirely by people or corporations with little connection to the local community, all tied together with the fact that lower elevations in the areas rarely see more than dusting of snow, like Islamabad and Rawalpindi, so folks heading out may or may not have known the dangers of CO2 in cars. This was an utter and complete failure of estsblished warning systems. Looks like 15 people were removed from their government positions after the report came out and they changed some of the infrastructure and emergency response policies due to the disaster.

Walking anywhere in the thick of winter is difficult. Driving can be dangerous. (But also the drivers can be dangerous).
