I was deeply involved in the game's development, and was even flown out to events to help present it. This video was like having all of my concerns during that time condensed into a single video. It elicited a ton of nostalgia, but also a somber melancholy; watching the team systematically get laid off was like watching a whole era of my life die. Thanks a ton for making this summary.
As a factory worker for 17 years I know the feeling of watching layoffs and being laid off all too well. It destroys your life if you're not prepared for it.
i don't really think so, the game will sell for 20 bucks and usually games like these require a LARGE fanbase to work, and people like when things are free, so i see another death unless marketing gets really good and attracts people to buy it
@hee_hee9964 they've got the support of gearbox abstraction games and Xbox. Xbox is keeping bleeding edge alive somehow, at least keeping the servers up. Gigantic isn't going anywhere this time. I'd pay hundreds of dollars to play this game again
@tigerfalco it is, some how. Thanks to gamepass. No updates, obviously. But I legit got into a match in avout 6 minutes last week. If Gigantic is coming to game pass we will be set!!!
sad i totally forgot about this game, just what was said in video wasn't this suppose to be out like 2015, either way it would of bombed anyways being on windows store and just xbox would still hurt it, PC players don't bother with window 10 store preferred choice is steam, and xbone might not had the audience
I think a cool fact that was left out was that at a certain point in the games development they ran out of money to actually pay their employees at all. Quite a few stayed and worked for free until they got the game to a point where they could actually have a wage again. Sucks to see the game go like this, and I can't even imagine how much this much suck for the devs that believed so much in their game.
LoL wasn't all that ambitious, was it? DotA was a simple mod to Warcraft and LoL was a simple game made in a similar way. They had to make original assets and all, but have you _seen_ orignal LoL? It didn't have nearly the polish or detail that Gigantic has. LoL is the story of a game with very satisfying gameplay that hooked people, and they used that success to polish it up later.
I really miss this game. The maps were enormous, and maybe the fighting felt a tiiiny bit flighty (I never played melee characters so I wouldn't know), but the movement! Gosh, the movement made you feel like an action movie hero.
This game is a masterpiece imo and the best thing hero shooters and MOBAs had to offer. When people talk about underrated games that never get the appreciation they deserve they never mention Gigantic.
Shit game? Toxic community? Are we even talking about gigantic anymore? Most dynamic combat system of any multiplayer game I've ever played. The discord and every pub game was full of shitposters and memelords it was an absolute blast and I'm sorry more people didnt enjoy it.
theres few games that really hurts because i feel that they didnt anything wrong, gigantic is one of them. I played 20 hours of it and to be fair, it was a very good game, its graphics were cool, the gameplay was fun , the sound design and music was also great. Its sad to see projects dying like this
HTY - I wish Overwatch never came out, or at least that it came out later. Seems like it contributed to the deaths of so many promising franchises we'll never see again.
slvrcobra1337 if it was,t overwatch, it would be something else dominating entirely. Problem with multiplayer games is that there is only room in the market for certain amount of them
NineTailedLiligant - One of the reasons I always facepalm at the whole "all games gotta be multiplayer now" boardroom and shareholder groupthink. There's only so many people in any niche who will play multiplayer constantly, only so much of the time. It's a comparatively small pool. Meanwhile, making singleplayer games almost ensures an audience, because someone somewhere will pick it up - provided the makers don't fail marketing.
i've seen the hawk dude making the rounds on pinterest, i've always thought it was just some random character an illustrator made, not a character in a fully fledged game shame, it looks like something i would play at least a couple of times
The death of Gigantic was pretty sad tbh. It had potential but was never given a chance to improve because of the costs involved. As you said, the money they made at launch was to replenish what was spent initially. They probably hardly made a profit and just did not have the funds/manpower to improve on the game. These guys basically signed a deal to two major publishers just so their game could see the light of day. The shutdown of Motiga and Gigantic is definitely a really sad story. Another good video!
These are so much better than those “didn’t just die, it was murdered” videos, which are often repetitive and boring. Good job making interesting videos on the same subject.
Tehfiddlers You're talking about Cleanprincegaming right? He makes good videos, but I agree, and the title is over dramatic. "Death of a game" is a lot more in depth and detailed but I enjoy them both.
Come on guys don't be mean with Cleanprincegaming... He has a template, is the same for every video, he just changes the content. While this is boring in the long run, is the only way he could keep making so many videos as fast as he can. Nothing is perfect.
They just now released a 2-day event where they booted the servers again for those days. Really hope its to gauge how well it would do if they would relaunch it. I hope they do.
I feel bad for Motiga because they made a fantastic, unique game and no one really got a chance to experience it. Now everyone is hopping onto the BR genre and games like IronSight and Halo Online are around, being praised for being almost literal carbon copies of other games. Just goes to show that the world doesn't need another MOBA.
Not sure why you put Halo Online into that, it's basically a fan-made PC release of Halo 3. It's not "almost a carbon copy", it's literally Halo 3 cobbled together by fans of the game.
slvrcobra1337 I put it in because everyone was freaking out about it when 0.6 dropped, same with Ironsight, which is essentially Black Ops 2. That combined with everyone now trying to milk the cash cow that is Battle Royale, if I was a former Motiga employee, I'd be so upset at the gaming community for being obsessed with unoriginal ideas that my product got left to die.
Optimus Prime - Dude it's Halo 3, it had a massive fan base that's been begging to have it on PC for over a decade, then they got it for free and with added content, what did you expect lol? I also doubt IronSight is taking away that many players, but again people are hype about it because it's closer to old school CoD than CoD itself. But I agree on the BR games, I think they're doing more damage to the industry than anything else on the market by a long shot.
I mean, its not as original as you think. Combine league of legends, overwatch and smite and you got this game. The only original thing they had was the art syle and how boring it was to play due to the long af fights (since your ability did like no damage).
It's so unfortunate, out of all the character based shooters, it easily had the best character design and animation. The twist on the game mode was great but imo the main issue was the lack of content support post launch necessary to keep players interested, it only had 3 maps and 1 game mode at launch!
I loved Gigantic SO MUCH, it was really special in a lot of way, I especially loved the character design and overall art style, and it was very fun to play.
The year is 2023 and I still hope and pray that this game comes back for whatever reason! It was so much fun, the art style, the combat, the movement, even the cosmetics were cool, the characters! 😮💨 man I miss Gigantic
As someone who got access to the game fall of 2014 and played it daily, streamed it, was a community coach and went to Gamescom, this video really sums up many of the things that I had been commenting on that eventually led to its death. I honestly believe that if they released the game at the end of 2015 on Steam and Windows 7, have founders packs, then make changes to the game (such as the power orb system), add an in-game store, more heroes, more levels and Windows 10 support it would have looked differently today. Gigantic is and will be my favourite multi-player game ever and will be VERY hard to beat. I truly hope that someone picks it up and gives it another chance when the time is right, if I could I would.
Truly the most tragic death of any game, it had so much potential and outshined all its competitors in just being outright fun on top of that absolutely gorgeous with so much creativity
i never got to play evolve online but i played it offline for a bit and even though i didn't really know what i was doing i really liked it. sad that the devs marketed it horribly and the monetization behind it was just pure laziness. Glad i didn't end up spending any money on it. i just hope the new predator game will be successful even if by a little
I loved this game more than the rest of the other games I've played. And it's really sad to see it go. It's just one of the games that I felt that really stood out for me.
Very sad it died. While I'm not a big moba guy anymore, i could tell this was a game with alot of love put into it, and its never a good thing to see passion fail like that.
Gigantic, Nosgoth, Evolve, games I loved, games that outshine most of the garbage offered to us nowadays, and all gone with no hope of ever seeing the light of day again. I still feel, years later, the strong desire to play all three of these games very frequently. It's actually depressing thinking about how I will never be able to do so.
@@Muchacho2DMax That's what I mean, 2 weeks ago it was dead, now we're back 💀 Hence the "aged like milk" it doesn't need to be revived, it IS being revived.
Such a cuuuute game. Loved every single one of the characters, the art... They all felt alive with their own personalities even while merely seeing them for brief 3 seconds. So sad. I cannot stand Mobas or such type of competitive games, as the communities push me away, however I'm sad to see the people's hard work go to waste. I'd love to play this if it was a normal MMO.. the art alone would make me buy it and pay a subscription.
I never played MOBA and Liked them . Trust me this game is far greater then those LOL and DOta 2 You know everytime my my teams's guardian shouts 'Ready for impact' i got chills cause of that it felt too amazing.
Seeing gameplay and reliving moments from my hundreds of hours in this masterpiece brings me sadness. I’ll never forget not being able to get a pentakill and getting angry at Imani and Tripp or making new friends through seeing them in matches one after another. I’ll always cherish the memories of getting the level 10 weapon for Charnok and rolling around as Pakko, tossing cards around as Oru and just having a blast messing with all the new characters as they released. This is my favorite game of all time and nothing really comes close in terms of memorability and how much I just miss playing it.
You don't understand how sad I am about its shutdown, It was my Multiplayer GOTY by far. I also believe its possibly the most consumer friendly F2P game out there. Its such a shame to see a great game like this and its developers not being rewarded :c
Sucks to see such potential just go down the drain. Nobody will likely ever even be able to use those characters ever again, which is a shame, because they all look so creative and cool. Hopefully somehow, someone makes a game that's a spiritual successor.
Ark lmao you sound like a COD player. How many games are all variations of ‘people in military gear shoot eachother in a brown landscape’ but sure, THIS one is generic.
Oh man this game was a real gem. I got one of my friends to play it with me right before the game died and we had an absolute blast, after a few months we tried to play it again but nobody was on and I was heartbroken. I wanted more of my friends but what's the point now. It felt so epic running alongside my guardian as we attacked the other team's guardian as it became this huge brawl.
I loved this game the moment I jumped into my first match. Everything flowed so well. It mixed Paragon's strategic elements with the fluidity of a free roaming sandbox game, fast-paced action of a fighting game, and the ability system of a MOBA. I liked how attacks didn't absolutely gut you inside out. Kills had to be earned through resilience and long skirmishes. That made the game feel rewarding to win and feel immersive even when losing. Battles felt rigorous. In games like Overwatch where Doomfist can one-bang you from god knows which rooftop, it feels cheap and unsatisfying. I don't even need to explain why that's an issue in LoL. It's sad how Gigantic never got any recognition. It's a gaming masterpiece of this decade.
I blame Windows 10 primarily. Once that was mentioned it left my radar entirely because the impression was that Win10 was the ONLY available platform thanks to all the previous Win10 ports being exclusive to it.
M$ was a clear reason to why the game failed with how they push Win10 so hard. Yet when it comes to gaming as of late they're not thinking with profit in mind. You want a game anybody can play easily as long as they can run it should matter.
A lot of people saw the inherent issues with Win10 right out the gate and didn't upgrade. Windows 10 at the time had serious customization, compatibility and privacy concerns, had some abysmally optimized ports and a UI almost preferring touch screens. That's not something you want your games tied to.
@@angelknives2843 Yes, but god win10 back then was shit af. I got win10 in 2017 and it was incredibly horrible. All sorts of problems, blue screens, freezings, compability issues, you name it. It was not worth it to get all these problems just for one game, I really liked windows 10 despite the problems and sticked with it, however I know many people who simply couldnt stay cause of how shitty it was. Its like going on a flight 1st class and someone saying you got a ps1 console with a really meh game if you "upgrade" to sitting on your feet near a garbage bin. Not worth it at all
your channel and speaking skills in videos are improving quite a bit since your earlier days, keep up the good work! I enjoy your videos a lot now that you seem to have more confidence reading from your script.
Please please please! Do a video on Paragon. If you need any references, I've played the game for two years. I can definitely tell you what happened. Because whilst the majority of it is Fortnites fault, there are a lot of other factors that went into it's demise
Yeah, I'm interested in a video about this as well. I played the game for a month or so but there was some gameplay/balancing stuff that needed to be worked out so i was gonna check back in later. Then I heard they were shutting down.
Paragon would be a very short video. "Epic dumped money into a game, had no plan or direction, and told their player base repeatedly they wouldn't take feedback, so no one put money into the game.' There's really nothing more behind it; They just showed they have no idea how to be a developer anymore, and decided to go the Zinga route.
Everyone: So you died? Gigantic: Sadly, yes. But I lived! This game WAS my childhood. I get to play it again for the first time in 6 years oh my god I'm goingnto throw up
