I'm from Thailand and this tree is considered one of the nine sacred trees. The wood is used mainly for making house floors, musical instruments, amulets. The fruit is amazingly good. Never knew you could use the leaves as additives for aquariums or as fashion accessories. Great video.

I only know a few like teak, jackfruit, rosewood. Basically they are trees with an auspicious word in the name. We're very superstitious here hahaha. The old betta guys here in thailand also use banana leaves, pandan leaves, papaya leaves, other local leaves as "medicinal treatment" for their bettas. Anyway, your videos are very informative and you go deep into every topic. Love them all.

I grew some jackfruit from seeds from a fruit my mother was eating. They are saplings in an indoor pot and probably will have to live in pots forever as I live in a colder zone 6 climate, which means I’ll probably never get fruit off of these. I just that they look kind of cool still so I continued growing them. It’s great to know I have a use for them now as I can use the leaves in my aquariums even if I don’t get fruit!

Another very informative video Alex. I haven't tried any of the tropical leaves yet, but I have done some experimentation with oak, maple and elm leaves. The oak leaves take the longest to break down, then maple, with elm leaves breaking down the quickest. I have a red oak tree in my yard, and live close to the Wisconsin River, so I can gather other species of botanicals from safe sources.

I havent tried the silver maple leave but WOO HOO did myshrimps bust a move after the mulberry leaves. I dropped a couple in andbefore 5 mins passed one of my large shrimp was munching away and a column of 4 small/baby shrimp were marching straight to the leaf. I wished i had shot some video, it was that funny/ obvious.

I've been trying to figure out botanicals that I can get right here on our property. I have a mulberry tree right outside my bedroom window we have several oak trees and there are English walnut trees that hangover the fence. I read that their leaves should be picked green so next summer I can get those. One thing I can't find any research on is the almond trees on our property. We have three of them. They aren't the Indian almond trees. They would be the regular almond trees that California uses to produce all the almonds. I can't find anything to say if they would have any properties that would be useful in the aquarium. I also read that basically any fruit trees would be good and we have three apple trees that I'm going to collect leaves from.

I don't know much about the fruit trees but I've never found a seasonal tree leaf that was harmful other than walnut

General question…when using botanicals (Guava, Cattappa, Jack Fruit) do you recommend boiling before use- or do you just rinse them off and drop them in and let them eventually sink. Thank you!
@superaquatics
@superaquatics 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing such valuable advise in your videos. I have a jackfruit tree. Heidi you prep the leaves for the aquarium or do you just put the fresh leaves in the tank? Also are they suitable for goldfish?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 года назад
They are suitable for all fish if in the correct ph for their species. Goldfish like neutral to hard water and all tannins or leaves will increase acidity and softness, so more water changes may be needed if things swing at all. But in many cases the water is hard enough that a few leaves won't put a Dent in the chemistry negatively. I just toss the dried leaves in...they have the most nutrients that way, if you don't know the source or its not marked food grade, pesticide and fertilizer free , like the botanicals at aquaticarts.com (I have a 15% off code & free shipping if you want to try them SECRETHISTORY15). But I'd you aren't sure, you can rinse and or flash boil them for a moment.

@@Fishtory Thanks. I gather these are the leaves that have dried & fallen from the tree or do I pick fresh leaves directly from the tree?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 года назад
@@superaquatics I would pick the healthy ones, then let them dry in the sun or oven on lowest setting of broil ... if you get them off the ground, you may want to boil them for 30 seconds to a minute to kill Fungi or mites that will move onto the tasty leaves. Best of luck to you! I'm jealous of your "money tree" lol

great video, very interesting. do you have any idea where i can find the properties of chinese magnolia?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 года назад
So I would recommend finding the latin name and then go to Google and search "Google scholar"...and it opens only accredited and peer reviewed academic papers and research . So then search the Latin name and hunt for studies on health...if you can't find the exact species, perhaps looking into all magnolias will yield something helpful? I have heard many people mention that they love the magnolia Pods and dried leaves for tannins in aquaria...and I'm sure magnolia have some medicinal or nutritional value...but best of luck finding the jnfo!

Would you consider it best to use a mix of leaves, such as jackfruit, beech and oak since they all contain different sets of nutrients and other properties? Would you also consider it worth it to buy jackfruit leaves as compared to using what’s available locally?

Ive noticed you are keeping some malawa shrimp in acidic water. Arent you using any calcium source? I thought malawa shrimp would do better in alkalyne water. Best regards from Portugal
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 года назад
So they do fine in near neutral...and some have been moved to acidic over time. However they are from sulawesi lakes (but also found in streams that are all rainwater according to the man I got them from, whom had been over to Indonesia to collect them in the past. I don't know if there is any confusion over species over there (a lake variety and stream that are different enough to be 2 varieties? Which is Just conjecture about any reports of malawa that don't handle acidity well). Thus far mine are sturdy through all mild conditions.

@@Fishtory i ordered mine from a germany store called Garnelio, and they sent me the shrimps in a bag, I tested the water and it was alkaline hard water, i put them in my tank wich has around 6,3-6,5 pH. I added some limestone and cuttlebone to try to prevent my pH to go even lower because of the aquasoil I have in there . I hope they can handle those conditions xD they were also aclimated for 2 hours before getting to that tank.

After watching this video I ordered some jackfruit leaves, took months for the package to arrive. When I opened them I saw that many of them have an oil residue on them. I suspect the oil is naturally occurring but am hesitant to use them in my tanks. I did write the seller and they said that they would send more. Should we use a variety of different leaves or are you suggesting that using jackfruit leaves is good enough?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 2 года назад
I still thank a variety is ideal, but perhaps 50% jackfruit and then a few other types here and there. They Don't drop the ph as much as many species and have less tea color tannins for the water. So If you want real black water you probably would want some woods or cones/nuts/Pods also. Cheers
